Bebe Rexha is a talented pop artist.  That said, she’s actually a bit underrated.  She’s worked incredibly hard to get where she is, yet still, looking back on her 2018 debut album, Expectations, she didn’t exactly ignite the charts on fire.  Still, “Meant to Be” was definitely a big deal – a song she should be very proud of.  Anyways, she’s back with a brand-new single, “Baby, I’m Jealous,” featuring Doja Cat.  Could this be her BIG moment?

Like many pop songs, “Baby, I’m Jealous” features multiple songwriters.  In addition to Rexha and Doja Cat, Jason Gill, Jussi Karvinen, Justin Tranter, and Pablo Bowman all earn writing credits.  Furthermore, Jussi and Gill handle production duties.  “Baby, I’m Jealous” is fitting set in a minor key, featuring some sweet rhythmic guitar and synths. Clocking in at just under three minutes, this is the perfect length for a pop record.

The first verse is performed by Bebe. Naturally, she highlights her jealousy: “All it takes is a girl above me / On your timeline to make me nothing.” Among my favorite lyrics appear on the pre-chorus, where she sings, “This is me, a woman in dichotomy / I love me, until I don’t.” Notably, following the second verse, it’s extended, as she asserts, “My apologies for looking on your history / I’m trying to let it go.” From there, we get the jealous chorus:

“Baby, I'm jealous
Of the pictures that you like
Baby, I'm jealous
Of the girls with lighter eyes
...The jealous kind.”

Rexha goes on to perform the second verse, in more of a hip-hop style.  As for Doja Cat, she performs the third and final verse, bringing more edge to the cut.  While she curses a bit, some of her best lines are clean, appearing at the end of her verse:

“I know you mad
But he ain’t even worth none of your time
It’s such a drag
I’m not being spiteful, but he’s trash
Won’t be the last
To let you know, but he gon’ show you.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Bebe Rexha, assisted by Doja Cat, deliver a fun, worthwhile pop track with “Baby, I’m Jealous.” Is this the second coming? No, but there’s ample potential for this to be a big-time hit.  Maybe, just maybe Rexha will gain the traction she deserves with a boost from this bop.
