Introductions are in order! The Musical Hype – well, readers of the Musical Hype, technically – meet Barbarossa! Who? Well, let me fill you in! Barbarossa is British singer/songwriter and producer James Mathé.  He makes his first appearance here but trust me – it’s a totally worthwhile one with single, “Make it Through.” Recorded with electronic producer, Ghost Culture, “Make it Through” tackles the process of overcoming hurdles life throws at you.

“‘Make It Through’ is about dealing with failures or challenges you are confronted with in life. When you are feeling overwhelmed at the challenges life has dealt you but somehow the support system around you – whoever or whatever that may be – give you the courage to persevere. Sometimes you even find another gear or inner strength you didn’t know you had to overcome.” – Barbarossa

Barbarossa [Photo Credit: Barbarossa]There’s plenty to heart about “Make it Through.” It features a head-nodding, infectious groove established from the onset, always a pro. Furthermore, there are slick, smooth vocals that complement the rhythmic backdrop.  Barbarossa never over-sings; it feels as if he doesn’t even break a sweat. The groove becomes more ‘souped-up’ on the chorus, while the vocals are harmonized, yet retain cool vibes.  There are gorgeous production cues throughout, particularly during the chorus section, the centerpiece. The balance within the production truly stands out. There are driving rhythm and colorful synths, but “Make it Through” never sounds overdone, even with the additional instruments entering the picture during the chorus.  Besides the colorful instrumentation, what else makes the chorus the crowning achievement? Simply put, it’s catchy and quite memorable.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, if you weren’t familiar, you’ve at least been introduced you to Barbarossa.  The big takeaways with “Make it Through” is that the man sure can make your ears smile – if there is a such a thing.  “Make it Through” is successful thanks to great production, beautiful vocals, and memorable songwriting, specifically the chorus.
