Question, did you hear “Do you remember me?”, a stellar record released by Libyan singer/songwriter, Bahjat in September 2018? In case you missed it, “What We Were” is another opportunity to get acquainted with this rising, 23-year-old, independent Libyan musician.  It’s not been an easy road for young star, but despite the adversity, he’s even more determined to become ‘the next big thing.’ Listening to “What We Were,” it’s safe to say this rising star is well on his way.

Once again, Bahjat comes through big. First and foremost, he sounds superb vocally, delivering a beautiful, well-rounded, nuanced performance overall. His instrument is angelic – youthful and bright, exhibiting an awesome vocal tone.  Adding to the completeness of his performance and overall execution are strong ad-libs that appear towards the end of “What We Were.” Bahjat doesn’t over-sing, giving the record just the right amount of oomph.

Beyond the star and main attraction, there are so many other reasons that solidify why “What We Were” is another winning record from the rising Libyan musician. Sleek production work certainly goes a long way, and “What We Were” feels equal parts idiomatic of pop, electronic, and urban music in certain respects.  Can you say crossover? That production is comprised of a great sound palette incorporating colorful synths, rhythmic, hard-hitting drums, and lush backing vocals.  Of course, every good song needs catchy, memorable songwriting, and “What We Were” doesn’t lack that in the least, particularly the chorus that is ready-made for pop radio.  Even a dash of gimmickry keeps “What We Were” fresh to death.

Final Thoughts

Once again, Bahjat impresses on “What We Were,” much like he did on “Do you remember me?” As great as the music is, the common denominator is Bahjat himself, who has so much charisma and that desire to absolutely excel. “What We Were” checks off all the boxes, again, most importantly this must-hear Libyan standout.
