Badflower, Family | Track Review

L.A. alt-rock band Badflower return superbly on “Family,” the personal promo single from their sophomore LP, This is How the World Ends.

nderrated.  Los Angeles rock band Badflower fit that description perfectly, sadly.  The band’s 2019 debut album, OK, I’M SICK was well done.  The problem, however, was the fact that Josh Katz and company didn’t get the love they deserved commercially.  Hopefully, their sophomore album, This is How the World Ends (September 24, 2021), gets more attention.  The band has a compelling argument for attaining a bigger following given the epic promo single, “Family”.

“Family” is a complete, well-rounded alternative rock record.  There are several components that make it stellar.  For one, this a ‘musical’ track.  Early on, Badflower pulls back rather than showcasing the full deck of cards.  Josh Katz takes the time to sing with poise while still holding the audience’s attention.  He tells this authentic, personal story about family, that leads to things a huge climax.  On this magnificent peak, both Josh and band kick things up considerably.  Gone is all sense of poise and control in favor of aggressive, bad ass, hard rock.  Here, you get a sense of the emotions Katz is experiencing:

“‘Cause I let you down
And I lost my fucking mind
Then everything got messy
And everyone got angry
I cursed my blood tonight
It happens all the time
Is everyone against me?
Has everyone goddamned me?
What happened to this family?”

Woo – that hits right there! Katz ‘brings it down’ after that gargantuan burst of aggression, again showing awesome musicianship.

Final Thoughts

“Family” is epic to the nth degree.  This is a fabulous rock record in an age where rock isn’t as dominant or prevalent as it once was.  Besides great vocals and personal songwriting, I love the attention to detail from Badflower musically. Please, please, please, don’t sleep on this band – totally check out “Family” and This is How the World Ends!
