BabyJake, "Blue Cellophane" [Photo Credit: SRV LabelCo, LLC]Rising South Floridian pop artist BabyJake shows tremendous potential and promise on his rock-infused pop bop, “Blue Cellophane.”

South Florida is in the house, and he’s a must-hear! Rising pop artist BabyJake (Jake Herring) was born in the Key West and raised in Ft. Myers, Florida.  After initially planning to be a college athlete, he ended up dropping out and began recording music.  Eventually, Jake Herring would become the aforementioned BabyJake who is signed with School Boy and Republic Records – not too shabby Jake! Enough backstory on this eclectic, genre-mixing artist.  The main attraction is the single at hand, “Blue Cellophane,” which is definitely worth hearing for a variety of reasons.

“Blue Cellophane” is best described as a pop record, but there is some rock influence that gives it a distinct sound.  The production is a definite selling point, additionally adding a retro element that’s certainly refreshing in 2019.  Also accentuating and headlining the distinctness of “Blue Cellophane” are colorful, nuanced vocals by BabyJake. The singer does a marvelous job of separating himself from a crowded field of pop artists given his beautiful, unique instrument.  Furthermore, during select moments of the record, he gets a lift from soulful, harmonized backing vocals, which further heighten the overall aesthetic.

“When I come down / I can’t feel a thing inside except my bones…” Those are some pretty honest lyrics right there.  Later, on the second verse, it begins similarly: “When I come down / I don’t ever feel okay, I feel afraid.” My, my, my. With the production and vocals serving as major pros of “Blue Cellophane,” the songwriting certainly can’t be left out of the mix. BabyJake is clearly experiencing pain, and this pain is legit. On the chorus, the centerpiece, he fully unleashes the extent of emotions. He searches for an escape, while the ‘blue cellophane’ provides temporary relief:

“If I’ll ever be painless
If I lessen my dose
Man, I wanna go places
That most people don’t go
Blue cellophane, my own escape, I’ll be fine till it’s gone
Will I ever be painless?
Or will I go on?”

Final Thoughts

All in all, BabyJake captivates with his honest, emotional single, “Blue Cellophane.” “Blue Cellophane” is a bop thanks to nuanced vocals, well-rounded production, and thoughtfully crafted songwriting.  Stylistically, the rock cues are superb, while the record is still clearly idiomatic of pop.
