âAwesome Songs That Tickled My Fancy in March 2020â features Bright Eyes, Childish Gambino, Demi Lovato, Dixie Chicks & J Balvin.
Ah, itâs time to select the best songs of month: AWESOME SONGS THAT TICKLED MY FANCY IN MARCH 2020! All of the songs on Awesome Songs That Tickled My Fancy in March 2020 were released as singles or as an album track in March 2020, or whereabouts. Musicians that made our ears perk up in the month of March include Bright Eyes (âPersona Non Grataâ), Childish Gambino (â53.49â), Demi Lovato (âI Love Meâ), The Chicks (âGaslighterâ), and J Balvin (âBlancoâ) among others. Without further ado, here are Awesome Songs That Tickled My Fancy in March 2020.
1. Childish Gambino, â53.49â
3.15.20 âą mcDJ Recording / RCA âąÂ 2020Â
The jubilant â53.49â closes out 3.15.20, the adventurous fourth studio album by Grammy-winning musician Child Gambino (Donald Glover). â53.49â is one of many songs from 3.15.20 that totally tickled my fancy; itâs an absolute bullet! On this splendid joint, Glover is aggressive AF â turned up from the onset as he raps intensely on the verses (âIâm just tryna put the spirt in your Yeezy Boosts / Get your cup, it runneth over once I got the juiceâ).
Then, he contrasts, singing absolutely gorgeously on the chorus.
âThere is love in every moment Under the sun, boy I did what I wanted to There is love in every moment Under the sun, boy You do what you wanna do.â
On the first chorus he showcases restraint, while the second finds him digging in, flaunting that otherworldly grit and ripe falsetto. Ultimately, on â53.49,â Glovers speaks about how great his life is. â53.49â = Awesomeness exemplified.
2. Demi Lovato, âI Love Meâ
âI Love Meâ âą Island âąÂ 2020Â
On âI Love Meâ, Grammy-nominated pop artist Demi Lovato moves towards a much better place, committed to loving herself. âI Love Meâ is a strong pop single that features sleek, energetic production work, courtesy of Oak, Keith Sorrells, and Alex Nice. Stylistically, âI Love Meâ encompasses elements of both electronic music and R&B, while being idiomatic of pop. Lovato, who has the pipes to pull off any style, has been quite accomplished in the urban-pop lane. The vocals are the biggest selling point, with Lovato mixing playful, feisty, profane moments with moments where she shoots straight bullets with her piercing, upper register ad-libs.
The biggest takeaway, as aforementioned, is about empowerment â embracing self-love. ââCause Iâm a black belt when Iâm beating up on myself / But Iâm an expert at giving love to somebody else,â she sings on the pre-chorus, continuing, âI, me, myself, and I donât see eye to eye / Me, myself and I.â Thatâs such a potent, incredibly relatable point. On the chorus, she expounds further, as she works beyond being âmy own worst criticâ and towards ââŠWhen I love me is enough.â Ultimately, Lovato slays on âI Love Me,â keeping it 100, balancing a relatable message and an infectious pop gem. âI Love Meâ previously appeared on the playlist, 11 Empowering Songs About Loving Yourself.
3. J Balvin, âBlancoâ
Colores âą Universal Music âąÂ 2020
Latin music saw a substantial uptick in popularity in the United States beginning in the second half of the 2010s. J Balvin has become one of the most popular artists in Latin music. Heâs been quite ubiquitous, collaborating with fellow Latin artists (Bad Bunny, ROSALĂA, etc.) and non- Latin musicians (BeyoncĂ©, Cardi B, and Liam Payne) alike. His colorful sixth studio album, Colores, is all about him. With consistently positive results, it was hard to pick only one song to be tickled by, sigh. I landed on âBlancoâ (âWhiteâ). Â
âTo any net I score (goal) / Like Cristiano Ronaldo / Throw me the beat that I deliver (pew, pew) / Hands up, this is an assault / This is not mass, but I came in whiteâŠâ Thatâs definitely electrifying stuff right there! J Balvin concludes Colores with the fiery banger. âBlancoâ shines thanks to its hip-hop sensibilities (within the Urbano Latino umbrella). The production by Sky Rompiendo and Dee Mad is minimalist yet potent, while Balvin never has any shortage of swagger, let alone sex appeal. Exhibit A: âFor real, made in MedellĂn, eh / I give it to you without you having to ask for it.â
4. Bright Eyes, âPersona Non Grataâ
âPersona Non Grataâ âą Dead Oceans âąÂ 2020
âUnwelcome in the autumn / Persona non grata / Iâm the last of the best / Iâm your thoughts in the swamp.â âPersona Non Grataâ marks the first new Bright Eyes song since 201. Conor Oberst has remained active since then, but unassociated with the collective. The reference that graces the song title, persona non grata, is defined as âa person who is unacceptable or unwelcome.â Sigh, thatâs the perfect subject for an awesome song to tickle my fancy!
First and foremost, Conor Oberst is true to self throughout âPersona Non Grata.â What does that mean? Well, ultimately, listeners experience the vocal style and songwriting style theyâve been accustomed to and come to love throughout his lengthy career. Once you hear Oberst sing, you almost instantly know itâs him, considering his tone of voice and delivery. Thatâs the case on âPersonal Non Grataâ â heâs instantly recognizable. Furthermore, the lyricism is emotional, poetic, and quite engaging. Take the first verse: âGetting dressed for a date / Put on blue aftershave / Wore a kilt like a Celt / Hid the weight that I felt.â Worth noting about the Celt lyric is the use of bagpipes â Pretty cool âtone poemâ element in that regard.
Of course, the kilt/Celt lyric is only one lyrical excerpt. There are so many more gems on this brilliant, thoughtfully penned record, which references the disenfranchised, spirituality/hypocrisy, and of course, politics. President Donald Trump is never explicitly mentioned, but his presence is clearly perceptible throughout. Additionally, âPersona Non Grataâ is well produced, beyond the aforementioned bagpipes. Bright Eyes makes a strong comeback to say the least.
5. The Chicks, âGaslighterâ
Gaslighter âą Columbia âą 2020
Prior to their 2020 comeback, the last time weâd heard from The Chicks, as the leading artists, was back in 2006. Back then, Natalie Maines and company were Taking the Long Way, and âMad as hellâ because they werenât âNot Ready to Make Niceâ. Taking the Long Way would win the country collective four Grammy awards, including Album of the Year. After an extended hiatus, the ladies come back strong  âGaslighterâ, among the awesome songs that tickled my fancy in March 2020, sigh.
âGaslighter, denier / Doinâ anything to get your ass farther / Gaslighter, big timer / Repeating all the mistakes of your father.â âGaslighterâ is an electrifying country record, plain and simple â#LIT. Opening with powerful, piercing harmonized vocals, the tone is set early on by The Chicks. Set in a major key, producer Jack Antonoff constructs a potent, country/folk backdrop for the girls to âdo workâ on.
âGaslighterâ seems to be about a failing relationship that includes deception and most pertinent to Natalie Maines, divorce. âYou thought I wouldnât see it if you put it in my face / Give you all my money, youâll gladly walk away,â she sings on the second verse, continuing, âYou think itâs justifiable, I think itâs pretty cruel / And you know you lie best when you lie to you.â The rest of the chorus, excerpted earlier, goes something like this:
âGaslighter, you broke me Youâre sorry, but whereâs my apology? Gaslighter, you liar.â
Plain and simple, âGaslighterâ is the blueprint for executing a comeback. The Chicks have always been known for their attitude, and they exhibit plenty of attitude throughout this three-and-a-half-minute bop. Angry Natalie Maines is the best in all honesty. Fancy tickled!
6. John Legend, âActionsâ
âActionsâ âą Sony âąÂ 2020
âLa-da-da-da-da, here I go again / With another love song that I wasted / Just another love run out of patienceâŠâ John Legend simply oozes with soul, following up the incredible âConversations in the Darkâ (Awesome Songs That Tickled My Fancy: January 2020) with âActionsâ, which do truly speak louder than words ;). âActionsâ exemplifies and old-school, retro-soul sound without sounding, well, too old or a total anachronism if that makes sense.
âActionsâ is short but incredibly sweet. Produced by Oak, he masterfully captures a classic sound, assisted by two awesome samples: âThe Edgeâ (David McCallum) and âThe Next Episodeâ (Dr. Dre featuring Kurupt, Nate Dogg, and Snoop Dogg). Sure, âThe Next Episodeâ can be characterized as âold-schoolâ hip-hop considering itâs 2020, but regardless, itâs refreshing to hear. The star of the show is John Legend, who, to reiterate, sings like an absolute champ. He never has to force things, sounding naturally compelling, nuanced, and potent. The focus is L-O-V-E, with Legend placing emphasis on showing as opposed to telling. This is best exhibited on the chorus which tweaks/transforms the old saying, actions speak louder than words:
âActions, speak louder than, speak louder than, speak louder than love songs The melodies they carry on Actions, speak louder than, speak louder than, speak louder than love songs Iâve been doing it all wrong.âÂ
Ultimately, once more, John Legend delivers a surefire winner. âActionsâ is well-rounded in every sense of the word. The vocals are elite, the production is classic yet refreshing, and the songwriting is entertaining with the chorus being catchy. Call it what it is, a bop. Totally tickled fancy!
7. Ellie Goulding, âWorry About Meâ
Ft. Blackbear
âWorry About Meâ âą Polydor âąÂ 2020
Grammy-nominated pop artist, Ellie Goulding, sounds terrific, as always on âWorry About Meâ, her first single of 2020, featuring blackbear. Despite the fact that she hasnât released an album since 2015 (Delirium), her voice sounds as unique as ever. Sheâs particularly potent on this urban-pop joint, set in a minor key, and filled with attitude, nuance, and ample personality. The production by Ilya is incredibly sleek, particularly the keyboard/synths, and the hip-hop sensible beat.
While Goulding is clearly the star, and needs no further support, blackbear brings a welcome contrast, with his distinct melodic/pop-rap and sung vocals.
âShe said, âWhy you gotta hit me on some I donât know shit? I am not your property; who led you to that notion? Action speakinâ louder than whatever you been smokinâ You donât gotta try and fix somebody that ainât broken.â
The songwriting is memorable and well-rounded. No, âWorry About Meâ is by no means the deepest song ever written, but itâs enjoyable and relatable. âI thought I need you to feel safe,â she sings on the first verse, âBut now that Iâve been through it, Iâm stuck in a good place.â The chorus, in all its repetitive simplicity, is terrific.
âYou can worry âbout this You can worry âbout that You can worry âbout sheâŠâÂ
All in all, worrisome or not, âWorry About Meâ is another bop for Ellie Goulding. It checks off boxes in regard to vocals, production, and songwriting as far as relatability and interesting subject matter. Furthermore, it fits the criteria for this playlist considering its use of the word and theme, worry. âWorry About Meâ previously appeared on the playlist, 11 Songs Filled with Overwhelming Worries.
8. Katy Perry, âNever Worn Whiteâ
âNever Worn Whiteâ âąÂ Capitol âąÂ 2020
Post-PRISM, things didnât go nearly as smoothly for Katy Perry as they once did â FACTS. Her final album of the 2010s, Witness, wasnât particularly well-received, with no gargantuan hits. Even post-Witness save for perhaps âNever Really Overâ, the new singles have been meh or so-so at best. Perry is back with spark with ballad, âNever Worn Whiteâ. Perhaps thatâs surprising considering the artist at hand but occasionally, Perry and a ballad make a respectable match (âBy the Grace of Godâ).
âNever Worn Whiteâ is beautifully executed overall. Johan Carlsson does a nice job setting up Katy Perry with lovely production â nothing to crazy. âNever Worn Whiteâ musically is anchored by piano and strings â gentler, more radiant sounds. Of course, Perry herself actually sounds more alluring and compelling than she has in some time. Perhaps sheâs never been the most technically gifted vocalist, but the way she uses her instrument here â the expressiveness and nuances â are pretty sweet. Listening to âNever Worn White,â I believe what she has to sell â the authenticity is clear and present. Particularly impressive is how she truly rises to the occasion towards the end of the record, âbringing it on home.â
Itâs easy to be more authentic when the subject matter is mature. âNever Worn Whiteâ is about a committed, dedicated relationship, with matrimony in mind. âThank God that you were man enough to come,â Perry sings on the pre-chorus, continuing, âAnswer my prayers / You asked the question, I said, âYesâ / But Iâm scared.â Of course, the centerpiece is the following chorus, where Perry wants to be the best version of herself to her future husband:
ââCause Iâve never worn white But I wanna get it right Yeah, I really wanna try with you No, Iâve never worn white But Iâm standinâ here tonight âCause I really wanna say, âI doâ I do.âÂ
After swinging and missing on singles like âSmall Talkâ and âHarleys in Hawaiiâ, Perry âcomes upâ on âNever Worn Whiteâ; I love the authenticity she exhibits.
9. Isaac Dunbar, âScortonâs Creekâ
âScortonâs Creekâ âąÂ RCA âą 2020
Young Isaac Dunbar has been quite impressive in 2020, releasing potent singles âIsaacâs Insectsâ and âMakeup Drawerâ. Both singles appeared on Awesome Songs That Tickled My Fancy: January 2020 and Awesome Songs That Tickled My Fancy: February 2020 respectively. That said, it shouldnât come as a surprise that Dunbar makes it three for three with the love-centric âScortonâs Creekâ earning a spot on Awesome Songs That Tickled My Fancy: March 2020.
âScortonâs Creekâ continues to showcase the genius of the wunderkind. Written by himself, he produces alongside Drew Pearson. The backdrop is alluring and well-rounded by all means, featuring a dreamy, lush sound matching the love-centric theme. âLetâs go to the tennis court / And take some pictures once more / Iâd love to sneak a peek of you while youâre posing.â Young Isaac seems to sing about falling in love, and all the reactions he has towards the person heâs in love with, or how he envisions the relationship. Unfortunately, he also seems to understand the plight of love, crushing, and such at the end clearly:
âI donât wanna say goodbye I fear you love somebody else But thereâs no way that you can control how you feel So, Iâll just have to learn between whatâs fake and real.â
With each and every Isaac Dunbar release, listeners hear a rising star. Furthermore, Dunbar continues to let us into his life, including an excellent coming of age song like âScortonâs Creek.â Short but potent, once more, Dunbar delivers vocally, emotionally, and thematically.
10. Bazzi, âYoung & Aliveâ
âYoung & Aliveâ âąÂ 2020
After releasing a mixtape in 2019 (Soul Searching), pop/R&B singer Bazzi returned with his first, brand-new single in 2020. Backtracking beyond Soul Searching, Bazzi is best known for a pair of singles from his 2018 debut studio album, Cosmic â âBeautifulâ and âMine.â Moving on to the present, here on this tickled fancy list, the 22-year old is feeling âYoung & Aliveâ.
Bazziâs approach is one that is drenched in swagger. His melodic lines tend to be rhythmic, influenced by hip-hop, incorporating a pop-rap sensibility. Furthermore, like many contemporary rappers and singers, thereâs no obligation to censor anything. Andrew casually throws in f-bombs, and they totally fit the chill, youthful vibe. The first utterance of fuck occurs on the chorus, which appears at the top of the track:
âRidinâ my bike like Iâm too young to drive Careless and free like itâs 2005 Had to chill the fuck out, take a trip outside To have fun with my friends like Iâm young and alive.â
The lyrics are reminiscent, further evidenced throughout the other sections of the song. On the first verse, in another instance of âfuckery,â Bazzi sings, innocently, âWe ainât gotta fuck or nothing / We could hold hands or somethinâ.â The same innocence turns into more on the pre-chorus, as he sings, âBut when the night gets late and weâre too fucked up / Please donât tell your mom, donât wanna mess this up.â Beyond the colorful lyrics and easy-going performance, the backdrop supporting Bazzi is pretty strong, further bringing out the best of him â in a mellow sort of way.
Relatively simple, Bazzi has a good thing going for him on âYoung & Alive.â He doesnât seem to take himself too seriously, and thatâs part of the charm. Adding to the charm are the reminiscent vibes, easy-going, swagger-laden vocals, and pleasant production work. âYoung & Aliveâ may not cease aging, but it will certainly take you back in the day.
11. Pluko, âthe lovely oneâ
âthe lovely oneâ âąÂ Splendid Society âą 2020
âI really wanted to step outside of my comfort zone for this one. I wanted to challenge myself to create a huge burst of emotion that still kind of felt like a âdropâ too,â 19-year old pluko comments regarding âthe lovely oneâ. If you havenât checked out this talented musician, whoâs ascended from âbedroom producerâ to the âmain stage,â now is the time. Electronic music naturally allows for more progressive spirit, something pluko captures on âthe lovely oneâ more than many of his older colleagues. âThis track was a huge breakthrough for me and my journey as an artist. After I wrote it, I felt as if I had just broken down a massive wall.â Breakthrough âthe lovely oneâ is indeed!
âthe lovely oneâ is nothing short of epic. Pluko absolutely wows on this instrumental record with colorful, sparkling production work. Even being an instrumental cut, it follows a standard form thatâs nearly identical to any pop song. That said, this is definitely more of a multidimensional cut, particularly given the fact that the listener is treated to a variety of different, totally awe-inspiring sounds. Furthermore, pluko does a bang-up job with contrast.  The best moment of the record occurs during the chorus/drop section. Here, the rhythmic synths hit you right in the face, sounding as if they are going to pop right out and consume you. Honestly, it one of the best and most distinct production touches Iâve heard in electronic music in some time. All the while those synths attack, a hard-hitting beat anchors the record down.
When âthe lovely oneâ was premiered, it was premiered via This Song is Sick. Truthfully, the song is indeed sick. Furthermore, so is pluko. Honestly, no words were necessary considering the music of âthe lovely oneâ speaks volumes all by itself. Popping synths, banging drums, and a high level of musicianship makes âthe lovely oneâ a certified bop.
12. The Killers, âCautionâ
Imploding the Mirage âąÂ Island âą 2020
âIâm throwinâ caution, whatâs it gonna be? / Tonight, the winds of change are blowing wild and free.â Brandon Flowers and The Killers are back baby! On May 29, 2020, the alternative collective returns with Imploding the Mirage, the follow up their 2017 LP, Wonderful Wonderful. If âCautionâ is any indication what Imploding the Mirage might sound like, then weâre in for a treat my friends!
âCautionâ commences enigmatically, with pads and slow-moving, restrained vocals by Brandon Flowers on the intro. âAnd there is nothing / I want to do / There is nothing / I want to giveâŠâ This unexpected, atmospheric start definitely makes the ears tune in â seeing where the band is going with this one. Of course, they donât disappoint! Soon enough, âCautionâ embraces groove, a quick tempo, increased dynamics, and those signature expressive, powerful vocals by Flowers (This is the point of the song where the âradio editâ starts, FYI). You could say, The Killers are definitely true to self.
As always, Flowers sings with incredible confidence, showcasing his personality, and he has some great, narrative-driven lyrics to work with. âLet me introduce you to the featherweight queen,â he sings on the first verse, continuing, âShe got Hollywood eyes, but she canât shoot what she sees.â On the second verse, the lyrics continue to be descriptive â thoughtfully penned: âNever had a diamond on the sole of her shoes / Just blacktop white trash straight out of the news.â Wow. Of course, the centerpiece is the chorus, excerpted at the top, continues as follows:
âIf I donât get out, out of this town I just might be the one who finally burns it down Iâm throwinâ caution Iâm throwinâ caution.â
Where are Brandon Flowers and The Killers âthrowinâ cautionâ to on âCaution?â Why the wind, of course. Ultimately, itâs a fantastic preview to Imploding the Mirage. Why does it work so well? Great production (Jonathan Rado and Shawn Everett), top-notch vocals, and well-rounded, memorable songwriting. This is an alternative bop, period. Fancy T-I-C-K-L-E-D!
13. Kiana LedĂ©, âForfeit.â
Ft. Lucky Daye
Kiki âą Republic âą 2020
âIâm givinâ you one, two, three / To back the fuck off of meâŠâ Wow, aggressive Kiana LedĂ© â aggressive! If you havenât had the opportunity to check out the rising R&B artist, well, itâs your loss. On the marvelous slow jam âForfeit.â, the second single from Kiki (April 3, 2020), LedĂ© shows that she possesses the total package â sheâs a star. Furthermore, sheâs assisted by another standout, Lucky Daye.
Why is âForfeit.â such a gem? First and foremost, she has a terrific instrument to work with â her voice is gorgeous. Besides being able to sing well technically, she also infuses ample personality into her performance on âForfeit.â âForfeit.â is a record that naturally lends itself to personality, given the angry sentiment of the lyrics, exemplified by the aforementioned excerpt from the chorus. The chorus itself continues:
ââŠDonât front when you canât back it up Itâs about time we wrap this shit up, mmm Say something now Say something now, yeah.â
Of course, that doesnât even tackle the anger Kiana LedĂ© serves up on the verses. Sheâs definitely explicit about things. âYou better forfeit,â she sings on the first verse, adding, âKeep fuckinâ with my vibes / And I can assure you it wonât end how you like.â Day-um! On the second verse, she goes on to sing, âYou must be some kinda fucked up / To be talkinâ to me crazy.â Again, day-um, and it doesnât stop there. And hey, we even failed to mention the guest spot by Grammy-nominated R&B sensation, Lucky Daye.
All things seem to be working for Kiana LedĂ©. Again, you are looking at, rather listening to, a star, particularly on âForfeit.â In addition to the award-winning aggressive lyricism and top-notch vocal performance, LedĂ© has a lush backdrop (Boston, Mike Woods, Patrick McManus, and Roark Bailey) to work with, led by the soulful guitars. Furthermore, that slow tempo further amplifies the aggressiveness. All in all, this is a superb R&B record.
14. Adam Lambert, âRosesâ
Ft. Nile Rodgers
Velvet âą More is More âąÂ 2020
On âRosesâ, a highlight from his electrifying, âfunked-out,â gem-of-a fourth studio album, Velvet, Adam Lambert collaborates with musical royalty â Nile Rodgers of Chic notoriety. The resulting âRosesâ is among the grooviest, most LIT records appearing on Velvet. I love the restraint that Lambert shows on the verses and pre-chorus, bringing more punch on yet another spot-on chorus.
Lambert is a bit upset on âRosesâ though. Why? Well, he received ROSES but sans emotion âmatters of the heart!
âAnd all that I got was roses Donât mean a thing without emotions Baby, just do it right, focus âCause I just needed your love tonight, tonight, tonight.â
Basically, Lambert wants more of an emotional connection, so much so that on the second verse he asks, âIs it love or are we just fuckinâ? / Tell me, baby, you canât keep me waiting.â
15. Bad Bunny, âSi Veo a Tu MamĂĄâ
YHLQMDLG âą Rimas Entertainment âą 2020
Puerto Rican Latin trap artist Bad Bunny (Benito Antonio MartĂnez Ocasio) proved that he was a star on his Grammy-nominated debut album, X 100PRE. Even if youâre no Latin music enthusiast, Ocasio makes the style quite compelling. After impressing with standouts âVeteâ and âIgnorantesâ (with Panamanian singer Sech), Ocasio dropped his second studio album, YHLQMDLG â Yo Hago Lo Que Me De La Gana (âI do what I wantâ) â in 2020. As awesome as the aforementioned singles are, the song at hand, âSi Veo a Tu MamĂĄ,â is pretty sweet.
âI donât know why the hell I fool myself / Saying I forgot you, when I miss youâŠâ âSi Veo a Tu MamĂĄâ commences YHLQMDLG brightly and energetically in a major key. On this sleekly produced number (Subelo NEO and Elikai), itâs the classic scenario of âIâm not over my ex.â As to be expected, Bad Bunny references missing the sex early on, as well as letting lots of things in life fall by the wayside because of his depression essentially.
âI still love you But I know itâs a mistake Because you donât love me anymore And without you, I do better And if I see your mom I ask her about you To see if you have someone Someone that makes you happy.â
âSi Veo a Tu MamĂĄâ previously appeared on the playlist, 15 S Songs Selected with No Rhyme or Reason.
