Atreyu, In Our Wake [Photo Credit: Spinefarm]Orange County, Cali metalcore band Atreyu returns with “In Our Wake,” the promo single from their seventh studio album of the same name.

“Who will leave in our wake, in our wake, in our wake?” Orange County, California metalcore band (+ alternative metal, screamo, punk metal) band Atreyu is back. Formed 20 years ago (1998) and fronted by Alex Varkatzas, the metal heads drop their seventh studio album, In Our Wake October 12, 2018.  Fittingly, promo single “In Our Wake” serves as the opener for the new project.

Following a brief mysterious instrumental intro, Atreyu kicks things off with a vocal intro, excerpted from the end of the chorus.  Speaking of the chorus, it is memorable, powerful, and hard-hitting.

“We break like the ocean, we rise like the tide

We drown in emotion but reach for the sky

We’re moving the mountains, we’re making a change

Drink youth from the fountain before it’s too late

Who will we leave in our wake, in our wake, in our wake?”

The guitars are heavy, while the drums are incredibly rhythmic and pummeling. Do we expect any less from a metal joint?  Even as hard as “In Our Wake” goes, it has a melodic quality that stands out, particularly on the chorus, in addition to elements of screamo blended in on (the bridge and post-chorus). Following the brief bridge, there’s an instrumental section/solo, prior to the final chorus.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “In Our Wake” won’t necessarily change your life, but it’s a respectable, enjoyable metal record.  That’s about the size of it.
