The Hamilton Mixtape [📷: Atlantic]Ashanti and Ja Rule reunite on “Helpless,” a cover appearing on the highly anticipated, star-studded ‘The Hamilton Mixtape.’

Hamilton is “kind of a big deal.” After earning numerous accolades, a mixtape featuring various artists covering songs from the musical, arrives (The Hamilton Mixtape). An urban power-duo reunites for the mixtape: Ashanti and Ja Rule.  The results of the reunion are favorable on “Helpless,” which was originally performed by Phillipa Soo.

“Helpless” opens with an intro by Ja Rule. The question lurking on everyone’s mind – where’s he been? Ashanti enters into the picture, delivering clear, no frills vocals.  Generally, her voice has been described in this manner throughout her peak, for better or worse.  In this context, she sounds great, sporting a respectable amount of swag.  She matches Phillipa Soo from the original cast, which is a pro.

Overall, the production sounds bright sound and enthusiastic. This is perfectly suited for Ashanti. Furthermore, the sound is a solid recreation by the producers. Ja Rule gets a verse, rapping with his signature, gruff set of pipes.  After his brief turn, he goes on to back her up. Again, it feels like 00s déjà vu.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Helpless” is better than expected. Sure, Ashanti and Ja Rule were previously “kind of a big deal,” but it’s been years since either has been truly relevant.  Regardless, the reunion is a success and their cover works.
