Ashanti, "235 (2:35 I Want You)" [๐Ÿ“ท: Written Entertainment]Years after releasing new music, Ashanti returns with an incredibly enjoyable, sexy, and sleek new single, โ€œ235 (2:35 I Want You).โ€

Arguably, the biggest headline surrounding Grammy-nominated R&B artist ๐ŸŽ™ Ashanti in recent times has been her Verzuz battle with Keyshia Cole.ย  Letโ€™s just say, this particular Verzuz wasnโ€™t as well received as others (not because of Ms. Douglas though). That said, perhaps what the fans and โ€˜stansโ€™ should focus more on new music, specifically the single, ๐ŸŽต โ€œ235 (2:35 I Want You)โ€.ย  Does the โ€œBabyโ€ singer still have it two years after her last single and nearly seven years after her last studio album? You bet she does!

Thereโ€™s plenty to like about โ€œ235 (2:35 I Want You)โ€ being honest. The nearly four-minute joint gets off to a great start with the lush, dramatic strings.ย  โ€œ235โ€ is set in minor key, which definitely gives it a killer mood โ€“ a vibe. Sure, vibe is big in contemporary R&B these days, but Ashanti comes from a time where vocals were far more important in the genre.ย  She serves up a solid vocal performance, which has an interesting side note to some degree. ย Back when she was in her prime, one of her characterizations and criticisms was the modesty of her voice โ€“ those Mary J. Blige comparisons were always off-base.ย  Modesty remains the case here to some extent, but ultimately, she sounds good and everything feels right.

Adding to the selling points is the personality that Ashanti showcases throughout.ย  This is definitely a sexy cut, so, it makes perfect sense that she plays it up.ย  She does so with great class.ย  Also adding to the pros are the rhythmic melodic line, specifically on the pre-chorus, the chorus, where Douglas powers more, packing a sizeable punch, and of course, sleek production work.ย  Getting incredibly specific, I love the intentional use of silence on the second verse. During this instance, it makes you think that itโ€™s a recording error.

Final Thoughts ๐Ÿ’ญ

Ashanti is past her lucrative prime. ย Honestly, only a select few R&B artists are truly experiencing that thing called โ€˜success.โ€™ That said, โ€œ235 (2:35 I Want You)โ€ is a strong comeback that reminds us why/what we loved about her in the first place.ย  This record plays to her strengths and definitely makes me yearn to hear more new music from her sooner than later.
