“Too fuckin’ cocky, baby, I’m too fuckin’ cocky.” The first step is admitting that you have a problem, sigh. A$AP Rocky, Gucci Mane and 21 Savage join forces for “Cocky,” a banger that appears on the soundtrack for Uncle Drew. The crew is assisted by London on Da Track, who handles the minor key, looped production work. Gucci Mane gets things started with a catchy, if incredibly simplistic hook, excerpted above.  Simplistic is an understatement.

21 Savage takes the first verse, rapping in his normal dead-pan approach. Even so, he delivers agile rhymes, including the ‘cocky’ “I got so many M’s in my bank account, I can’t even count ‘em / Too many whips, way I switch my car, I can’t even mount ‘em.” A$AP Rocky takes the second verse, dropping some great one-liners:

“How you gone play D, you can’t even take D / Too many fake me’s / Way too many fake daps, way too many fake ‘$APs…”

An A$AP Rocky bridge follows the Gucci Mane hook, breaking up the monotony and any sense of predictability.

“Just pass me the rock and watch him go / Just run me the play and let me know / With a broken leg, I let it go / I ain’t gotta say it ‘cause they know.”

Gucci Mane takes the final verse.  He opens spitting, “Gucci is materialistic, he’s too fuckin’ flash / He smoke when he wanna smoke, think the world is his.”

Final Thoughts

How does “Cocky” stack up? Ultimately, it’s an okay banger, but nothing game changing.  Been there, done that.
