A R I Z O N A – “the band, not the state” – returns with two new singles, including the readymade summer jam, “Summer Days.”
Obviously, if you Google Arizona, the first search results that come up are the state. Perhaps that’s why the electro-rock band, stylized as A R I Z O N A proclaims they’re “the band, not the state.” Interestingly, all of the members – Nate (guitar), David (keys), and Zach (vocals) – are from New Jersey. So, why is the rising trio, who released their full-length album back in 2017 (Gallery), named after a state they’re not even from? According to their site, “This band was never going to be about what it’s called, it was always going to be about the music. Everything else is just superficial.” Alright then. Moving on, what’s a better listen for summer than “Summer Days.”
“To make the cold nights feel like summer days.” The sound of “Summer Days” is a big selling point. Early on, the production is clean and relatively uncomplicated. It proves to be incredibly slick, with a signature guitar line, hard-hitting rock/pop beat, and of course, keyboards/synths. As the record progresses, the complexity, intensity, and layers grow. Frontman Zach delivers clear, commanding vocals, also exhibiting a coolness throughout the verses and the catchy, if simple and repetitive chorus (aforementioned). The focus of his lyrics is what she does, which includes parties, fancy dates, holidays, and posting pics. At the end of both verses, “She’s downtown…and she’s dancing…”
Final Thoughts
All in all, A R I Z O N A delivers an appealing single with “Summer Days.” As stated previously, this is a great summer song, likely what the trio had in mind when releasing it in July. It’s well-rounded, even if the lyrics aren’t the most deep or complex. The vocals and the production are superb.
