Up-and-coming R&B artist Arin Ray showcases potential on his 2nd single from 2017, “Stressin.” There’s nothing ‘stressful’ about the listening experience.
Ah, fresh blood! Arin Ray is an up-and-coming R&B artist, signed to Interscope. Ray got his ‘foot in the door’ into the business as a participant on the X Factor stateside. Now, he looks to be the next big thing. He has a tough road ahead, particularly in a cooling R&B genre, but single “Stressin” proves he’s quite special.
“Stressin” has plenty of pros working in its favor. Firstly, the production is superb, sporting a dusty, soulful beat, and an old-school sound. No, “Stressin’” doesn’t sound anachronistic – this isn’t vintage soul – but there’s clearly a soulful quality. Secondly, vocally, Ray exhibits excellent throughout. Adding to the vocal aptitude, he exhibits mad swagger. That swagger encompasses being cool, suave, and of course, dropping some profanity here and there.
His potty-mouth definitely separates Ray from the masters of soul. His bolder approach isn’t excessive – it makes him somewhat comparable to more soulful artists such as Jaheim. Adding to the goodness of “Stressin” is a catchy, memorable chorus. It’s perfect atop the soulful (for lack of a better word) backdrop. Perhaps “Stressin” isn’t a truly great song, but it’s a rock-solid record.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Arin Ray is off to a great start with “Stressin’.” It checks off boxes in regards to vocals, personality, and production. Perhaps there are better-rounded songs, but “Stressin’,” as aforementioned, is an enjoyable, well-rounded record. Lots of potential for Ray.
