“Positions” doesn’t eclipse some of the biggest hits by Ariana Grande, but it gives her another enjoyable, totally sexy, vibe-laden joint.
Are you ready for 💿 Positions? Positions marks the sixth studio album by Grammy-winning pop superstar, 🎙 Ariana Grande. Throughout the back half of the 2010s, Grande has been a dominant force in pop, releasing one of the very best albums to come out of the decade, 💿 thank u, next. At this point, anytime there is a new project, it’s definitely a big deal. In advance of Positions, fittingly, Grande released the title track as the promo single.
🎵 “Positions” checks off many of the expected boxes with an Ariana Grande song. First and foremost, the vocals are on-point. If this weren’t the case, it would be an epic fail, period. Furthermore, with production by Tommy Brown, Mr. Franks, and London on da Track, “Positions” has a R&B sound, while still remaining idiomatic of pop. This is pretty common for Grande, who has the pipes and artistic sensibilities to fit perfectly in R&B. Ultimately respectably produced, while the sound of “Positions” doesn’t necessarily wow me per se, it’s sound and in line with what we’ve heard from Ari over the years.
With vocals being a selling point and production solid, what about the songwriting? Well, sex dominates thematically, which is always ‘stimulating’ (pun intended). That said, “Positions” itself sounds more like a vibe than a songwriting tour de force. The chorus is the catchiest, most recognizable section of the song, as it should be. The verses are relatively short and certainly aren’t transcendent. That said, they’re a vibe, with the pre-chorus and that standout chorus coming to save the day.
Final Thoughts 💭
So, how good is “Positions?” All in all, this is another good song by Ariana Grande that should undoubtedly be a hit. That said, it lacks the magic of say 🎵 “No Tears Left to Cry” or 🎵 “thank u, next” all said and done. Still, she sings well, the vibe is killer, and the sexiness goes a long way.
