Sigh, I’m still salty that Ariana Grande didn’t win one Grammy for her masterpiece, thank u, next – had to throw that out there.  Regardless, thank u, next was easily one of the best pop albums of the aughts, from one of its most gifted singers.  Grande is back in 2020 with “Stuck with U,” and she’s paired with another musical force, Justin Bieber.  While I wasn’t thrilled about his comeback album, Changes, I am a fan of his voice.  Is there any way that a Grande/Bieber duet can miss, especially considering that said duet is a fundraiser (First Responders Children’s Foundation)?

“I lock the door and throw out the key / Can’t fight this no more, it’s just you and me / And there’s nothin’ I, nothin’ I’d rather do / I’m stuck with you, stuck with you, stuck with you.” What strikes me about “Stuck with U” is the soulfulness.  This soulfulness makes sense considering Ariana Grande has always embraced the urban angle of pop – it suits her voice.  Likewise, Bieber, as he’s matured, has leaned R&B throughout his career, truly embracing it on his Changes albums.  The sound of “Stuck with U” is quite old-school, much older and more traditional than both artists.  Regardless, each has the pipes to sell it successfully.  The end in particular is quite high-flying – love the vocal chemistry.

Final Thoughts

So, as I asked earlier, is there any way that a Grande/Bieber duet can miss? No, it can’t miss nor does it miss in the least. The result is a sensual, but tasteful and romantic quarantine single, period.  Both artists are at the top of their game on this pleasant, throwback pop/R&B joint. Helping too craft that awesome musical sound are producers Gian Stone and Freddy Wexler.  I’d say, job well done everyone!
