Anthony Russo, a rising pop artist bred in the Midwest but based in California, continues to build a case for himself on his latest single, “It’s a Risk.”
Rising Midwest-bred, Cali-based pop artist Anthony Russo is back with fresh new music. In case you are unfamiliar with him, I highly recommend checking out his sweet, urban-pop ballad, “2:AM.” “2:AM” marked by first experience with Russo, and he’s definitely remained on the radar since, whether it’s a slick-talking, swagger-laden guest spot on the G-Eazy single “Rewind”, or merely earning a spot on the 11 Songs That Give Off California Vibes with his 2017 gem, “California.” Enough ‘rewinding’ already, as November 20, 2018 saw Russo release two new singles – “It’s a Risk” and “Kings and Queens.”
“A risk, a risk, a risk, a risk, a risk / Yeah maybe it’s a risk, but ignorance is bliss.” True dat! “It’s a Risk” continues to find Anthony Russo serving up a heaping dose of swagger. From the start, Russo exudes confidence, showcasing ample personality.
“Sometimes I wonder how I got here
I had to grow up, but I’m better off than last year
Sometimes I might look like an asshole
When there’s a cure for insecure, I’ll take my mask off.”
Was that an intentional Future reference? Anyways, like the multitude of pop these days, the melodic lines are rhythmic, embracing hip-hop sensibilities through and through. Russo takes things a step farther with his overall approach, which is youthful and carefree – he’s totally living it up. Can you blame him for taking risks? YOLO, right? A prime example: “I just wanna go dumb, lemme talk my shit / I got all my friends backed up.”
Final Thoughts
All in all, “It’s a Risk” plays out well, if pretty straightforward. This isn’t a record you’d characterize as transcendent. That said, that was never the M.O. Anthony Russo doesn’t try to ‘hide his cards’ – he’s young, ‘living the life,’ and having fun. The fun is well reflected and appreciated on “It’s a Risk,” which is a fine, non-risky addition to any music collection.
