In the 45th edition of Wacky Wednesday (2025), we break down the unique “Homo-Sexual,” performed by Angry Samoans.
Do you know what day it is? It is Wednesday, folks! Do you know what that means? Why, it is Wacky Wednesday! In the spirited column Wacky Wednesday, we analyze, break down, and explore songs from various musicians of various genres that can be considered unique, unusual, or ‘wacky.’ These songs can be new or old; the only requirement is that they ‘catch the ears’ because of their distinctiveness. With the background established, in the 45th edition of Wacky Wednesday (2025), we break down the unique “Homo-Sexual”, performed by Angry Samoans. Wacky Wednesday vibes commence!
“Homosexual!” And thus begins “Homo-Sexual” by the satirical Los Angeles punk band, Angry Samoans. “Homo-Sexual” appears on the band’s 1982 album, Back from Samoa. Naturally, the titular lyric is repeated numerous times throughout this brief cut, which runs under a minute long. The song is up-tempo, characterized by its aggressive, distorted, driving, jagged, and rhythmic guitar riffs, as well as the pummeling drums that hit you right in the chest 🤘. Metal Mike Saunders (b. 1952) has ample fuel for his vocal fire.
Saunders’ vocals are chanted, rhythmic, and filled with personality. The lyrics are bold, blunt, and unapologetic. Very gay! Like many punk bands, Angry Samoans don’t give a flying fizzuck. “Screw your wife in the behind / Tell your kids you’re doing fine,” he sings in the first verse, and continues, “Goddamn no-good stupid liar / Suckin’ dick, your pants on fire.” Oh, shit, Mike reads him for filth! He captures a closeted homosexual man. “Living in your faggot world,” he sings, and adds, “Talking shop with lawyer’s wives / Sneaking out to meet the guys.” Particularly in the 1980s, this wouldn’t be far-fetched. The f-slur remains controversial, though many members of the gay community have reclaimed the word. In various instances, Metal Mike incorporates homosexual happenings, in the most rough around the edge, unnuanced way possible:
“(Homosexual) Up the ass…
(Homosexual) Jerk me off…
(Homosexual) Kill Dan White…
(Homosexual) I’m ashamed.”
The references to disgraced politician Dan White (1946 – 1985), responsible for the assassination of Harvey Milk (1930 – 1978), a politician and iconic gay rights activist, as well as homosexual shame, are notable. Although a bite-sized song, “Homo-Sexual” is jam-packed and worth listening to and analyzing.
