Andy Black – aka Andy Biersack, frontman of Black Veil Brides – returns with his first solo single since his debut album, ‘The Shadow Side,’ “My Way.”
Andy Black (aka Andy Biersack) announced the release of his second solo album, set to arrive in 2019. In 2016, Black quietly released his debut solo album, The Shadow Side, which debuted at no. 22 on the Billboard 200. Honestly, the project deserved more success than it achieved, if for nothing more than standouts such as “Homecoming King” and personal favorite, “We Don’t Have to Dance.” Biersack gave us the first sampling of album number two with single, “My Way.”
First and foremost, “My Way” is definitely a surprise. This is no original, but rather a cover of a cover – yes you read right. “My Way” was popularized by the late, great Frank Sinatra, notably co-written by Paul Anka. Covered by many, Sid Vicious (Sex Pistols) have a unique, punk-oriented version. Essentially, Andy Black combines both versions.
At the beginning, Black plays it straight, favoring the original by Sinatra. It’s a bit off-putting, particularly if you go into “My Way” blindly, without realizing he’s covering as opposed to being original. Soon enough, the rock edge kicks in, transforming the standard into a punk-fueled, angst-filled affair a la Sid Vicious and the gang. Naturally Andy Biersack has the pipes to sing just about anything – he’s extremely gifted. He certainly delivers this classic with more technique than Vicious, while embracing the same spirit and energy.
Final Thoughts
Will an Andy Black/Andy Biersack cover of “My Way” change your life? Maybe for some super fans, but in the big scheme of things, the answer is no. That said, it’s a respectable performance through and through. The voice and the energy stand that tallest here.
