Andrew Jannakos may not be a familiar name, yet, but with a viral hit on his hands (“Gone Too Soon”), that likely won’t be the case for long. Jannakos was a contestant on the 16th season of The Voice. Of course, the Georgia country artist who comes from a big Greek/Italian family, didn’t win.  Does it matter, with “Gone Too Soon” shooting to the top of the iTunes sales charts? Nope, sure doesn’t!

“Gone Too Soon” was written by Jannakos alongside Jason Afable and Joshua Clements Bricker. Per The Country Note, Jannakos states: “‘Gone Too Soon,’ is about a long-distance relationship I had with my girlfriend (now fiancé). It’s about how we just never wanted the time we spent together to end….” Perhaps that’s the reason why “Gone Too Soon” has caught on – relatability.  Furthermore, the record has a nice, contemporary country sound without ‘compromising the style’ you might say.  Warm guitars – acoustic and electric – go a long way.  What goes even further are warm vocals and a beautiful tone by Jannakos.  He never over sings or overindulges, maintaining balance.  Furthermore, while Jannakos clearly sounds country, he doesn’t exaggerate twang or force it down our throats.  Adding to the pros is accessibility; the form of the record is quite straightforward and easy to follow.


Final Thoughts

All in all, “Gone Too Soon” is enjoyable and certainly relatable.  Is the viral hit game changing? I’d said no, but it’s definitely worth spinning.  It’s pretty straightforward, which is part of its
