“I been broker way longer than I been rich so until it levels out / I’mma take your mama to the Marriot and wear it out.” Grammy-nominated rapper/singer Anderson .Paak is back! After dropping “‘Till It’s Over” earlier in 2018, the West Coast standout returns with his second single, “Bubblin.”

Examining the aforementioned lyrical excerpt, Anderson .Paak speaks about his financial status back when. Basically, he asserts that most of his life, he’s been broke, but now, he’s ‘come up.’  The rest of the excerpt reads as follows:

“Took me so long to get it, gonna spread it out

Let ‘em know all about me when I’m dead and gone.”

The script of “Bubblin’” is clear – it’s a come-up anthem.

Backtracking a bit, “Bubblin’” opens with a dramatic, enigmatic, and energetic introduction. This sound sets the tone for the record.  The emotional upper register strings serves up some major ear candy that recurs throughout the course of the record.  After the compelling intro, “Bubblin’” settles in, fiery to the nth degree, anchored by a hard-nosed beat.  Naturally, Anderson .Paak ‘eats it up.’ Continuing to sound compelling as an artist, he raps like a fire’s been lit under him, dropping sick bars and flaunting his distinct vocal timbre.  The centerpiece of the record is the hook, which is simple, but catchy and highly effective.

“One in the hand, one in the bag, bubblin’ (look at you go)
One in the hand, one in the bag, bubblin’ (look at you go)
Look at the cash, look at the cash bubblin’ (okay you bubblin’)
Look at the cash (look)
Bubblin’ (go).”

Final Thoughts

Simply put, Anderson .Paak kills it on “Bubblin’.” Indeed, his career is “bubblin’,” clearly on an upward trajectory.
