It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 48th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2025), we dive into “Angel”, the one-hit wonder by Amanda Perez.

“It’s been five months since you went away / You left without a word and nothing to say.”
Uh-oh! Those pesky matters of the heart are firmly in play 💔 😬. Heartbreak is universal to the nth degree, unfortunately. During her career, Mexican American R&B singer-songwriter Amanda Perez (b. 1980) only charted two songs on the pop charts. Both “Angel” (the song at hand) and “Never” hailed from the same album, Angel, released in 2023. Only “Angel,” the third track, was an impactful hit, peaking at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Perez penned the heartbroken “Angel” and produced it with Mikey Quinn and Harold Road.

“But there’s something I have to do,”
Amanda Perez sings in the second verse, and adds, “I have to tell the one that I once adored / That they can’t have my love no more.” Ooh-wee! The crowning achievement of “Angel” should come as no surprise – the chorus! “‘God, send me an angel from the heavens above / Send me an angel to heal my broken heart from being in love,” she and the background vocalists sing, emotionally, and continue, “‘Cause all I do is cry / God, send me an angel to wipe the tears from my eyes.” The chorus is incredibly tuneful – an earworm that sticks the first time you hear it.  Adding to the feels is the bridge, where Perez’s lover “Took my love for granted / Want my lovin’ now, but you can’t have it.”  Word. Beyond the lyrics, what about a note regarding those background vocals? What about the wavy sound created by some clever studio effects? It’s a surefire vibe that you won’t forget after listening! “Angel” is a terrific R&B ballad. If anything, Perez deserved far more attention for this touching one-hit wonder.
