Bring on the bold, fierce songs! Bangerz N Bopz 🔥 serves up background info and insight into songs of various styles, especially songs that raise eyebrows and/or stir the pot. Featured records can be classic or brand new. In the 84th edition of Bangerz N Bopz 🔥 (2025), we break down “Ordinary” performed by Alex Warren.
In case you didn’t know, “You’re takin’ me out of the ordinary / I want you layin’ me down ‘til we’re dead and buried.” Ooh-wee! Breakout pop singer/songwriter Alex Warren released a dominant hit in 2025 – an understatement. “Ordinary” was inescapable. Ubiquitous! The Warren, Adam Yaron, CAL, and Mags Duval-penned song spent 10 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Earning double-digit weeks on the pop charts is elite. As of June 2025, “Ordinary” proved its extraordinary nature, earning platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
So, what else makes “Ordinary” extraordinary? It’s an enjoyable, well-rounded pop song. There are more striking records, but “Ordinary” is respectable. The plucked ostinato at the beginning sets the tone. It recurs throughout the record. Alex Warren impresses with his warm vocals. He sings with a beautiful tone, bringing the tuneful melody to life. “So, if our time is runnin’ out,” Warren sings, “Day after day / We’ll make the mundane our masterpiece.” During the pre-chorus, there is the welcome addition of dramatic left-hand piano (“Oh, my, my / Oh, my, my love / I’ll take one look at you”). Of course, the section to beat is the gargantuan chorus. Mammoth drums, keys, and layered vocals fuel Warren’s fire.
“Somethin’ so out of the ordinary
I want you laying me down ‘til we’re dead and buried
On the edge of your knife, stayin’ drunk on your vine
The angels up in the clouds are jealous knowin’ we found
Somethin’ so out (Out) of the ordinary
You got me kissing the ground (Ground) of your sanctuary (Sanctuary)
Shatter me with your touch, oh, Lord, return me to dust
The angels up in the clouds are jealous knowin’ we found.”
During the second verse, Warren ascends the octave, upping the ante. Additionally, he digs in more during the second iteration of the chorus. Beyond the chorus, the bridge is big and picturesque: “Somethin’ so heavenly, higher than ecstasy.” Ooh-la-la! Warren brings things down during the final chorus before rising to the occasion one final time. Although I was less enthusiastic about “Ordinary” during its dominant run, I acknowledge it is more than an ordinary pop song. It is among 2025’s biggest pop bops, period.
