“Fuck a New Year’s resolution / I’m fresh out of bad excuses / And one day I’ll wish I had started now.” Killer way to start a song, alex (Alex Cooper), if I do say so myself.  The f-bomb sets the tone for “New Year’s Resolution”, a brief, one-and-a-half-minute song released at the tail end of 2023, prior to the new year. Alex is brutally honest about how he feels about those resolutions, showing off the sheer beauty of his voice. Additionally, as he sings, he sounds authentic and vulnerable, the mark of an artist with the ability to connect with their audience.

Of course, one of his biggest selling points is his self-deprecation, always a powerful tool in music.  Beyond those charming f-bombs and ample uncertainty, one of the best lyrical moments of “New Year’s Resolution” is certainly “Rage bait / Dopamine / I Don’t care / As long as you notice.” Ooh-wee! The new year may potentially be sus, but alex makes it thrilling.
