3.5 out of 5 stars

Alex Aiono, Question © InterscopeUp-and-coming pop artist and YouTube personality Alex Aiono returns with a second single, “Question,” from his forthcoming project.

The transition from YouTube to pop superstar isn’t an easy one.  Despite a solid debut single, “Work the Middle,” talented pop singer/songwriter Alex Aiono is still searching for his breakthrough.  The 21-year old artist seems like a can’t miss – he has the looks, the voice, and the musicianship to pull off a lucrative career.  Perhaps his second single, “Question,” can help in his pursuit of superstar status.

“Question” finds Aiono reminding his ex he doesn’t “mess with her no more.”  On the first verse, he describes the peak of the relationship and the ending.

“I used to hit you after midnight…/ Giving you the best times, best times / Never thought we’d hit a red light / Then you had to go switch sides, switch sides…”

On the pre-chorus, clearly his ex- regrets her decision to break up.  Alex, on the other hand, is over it and has moved on.  Here, the vocal line is incredibly rhythmic:

“And I tell you all the time / But you don’t get it, you don’t get it, no / So try to hit my guilty conscious with a text…”

It all leads up the chorus, as aforementioned, that Aiono has to remind her that they aren’t a couple anymore.

“I thought I told you / I don’t mess with you no more these days, oh / I thought I told you / I’ve been loving someone else these days…”

The remainder of the song offers more of the same.  Alex gave his all, while his girl bailed on him. Now that she’s bailed, she wants him back.  He’s not having it.

Final Thoughts

As far as the production, “Question” fits the modern pop vibe, which encompasses urban cues.  In addition to those urban cues, the drums also signal Latin rhythms, which is a nice touch. Will “Question” make Alex Aiono a star? Only time will tell, but first impressions suggest he may still need continual exposure and that right, pitch-perfect single to propel him over the hump.  “Question” is a good start regardless.
