Fueled by a bad ex-, 22-year rising pop artist Alex Aiono shines on his high-energy, regretful, yet therapeutic single, “Big Mistake.”
“Woke up in a daze got me feeling so strange / We’re so damn far from that honeymoon phase.” Uh oh – trouble in paradise! When it comes to possessing the ‘total package’ in pop music, Alex Aiono is definitely a rising artist that has it. Most importantly, he has an awesome singing voice, but let’s not kid ourselves – he’s a total heartthrob. He’s continued to maintain his YouTube presence, producing and mashing up popular hits like a champ. Finally, he blessed the world with another original solo single, “Big Mistake,” released on Friday, August 24, 2018.
Going back to the aforementioned lyrical excerpt from the first verse, it’s clear that ‘love is no more’ with this particularly person for Alex Aiono. Go on and cue up Lauryn Hill. On the pre-chorus, he revisits the once meaningful things his ex- told him, only to come to the ultimate conclusion, “‘Cause you are just all talk / The truth is you’re so lost / If we had it all then you’ve got nothing left.” On the chorus, he places even more blame on the one who caused him great pain:
“I’ve forgotten how to love because of you
I know that I’ll be ok
Oh, you were my big mistake
I-I-I got stuck in limbo ‘cause of you
I know that I’ll be ok
Oh, you were my big mistake, my big mistake.”
On the second verse, like the first, Aiono continues to sort through things, describing what ended up being his “big mistake.” Later, on the bridge, he addresses her, making it clear, “One day you gon’ wake up / Missing something you can’t replace…”
Final Thoughts
All in all, Alex Aiono delivers a compelling, enjoyable pop single with everybody’s favorite theme – love (in this case, heartbreak). Even though Aiono is upset, the production is bright and energetic. It’s as if expressing his regrets is therapeutic – atonement for wasting his time and the pain inflicted on his heart. He sounds terrific, and the chorus/post-chorus are super catchy.
