Alec Benjamin, "Demons" [Photo Credit: Alec Benjamin]Pop singer/songwriter Alec Benjamin addresses and gives gratitude to an unnamed person on his first new single of 2020, “Demons.”

“I got all these demons hiding underneath / Nobody can see them, nobody but me, and you’re the reason…” Wow, sounds pretty demonic there, AB. Alec Benjamin deserves ample credit for his work ethic.  The pop singer/songwriter has definitely been prolific throughout the course of the past couple of years, delivering some truly excellent material on his Narrated for You mixtape.  After closing 2019 with the ‘incarcerated’ single “Mind is a Prison”, Benjamin keeps things ‘dark’ with his first single of 2020, “Demons.” Or, does he?

Even though the aforementioned excerpt from the chorus suggests an incredibly depressed record, “Demons” isn’t particularly sad in sound.  The record features a quick tempo, subtle, yet potent vocals, and ultimately, very little ‘heaviness.’ I might even go so far as to call the backdrop lighthearted. The chorus continues, “The only thing that keeps me from diving off the deep end / Because I’ve got all these demons, demons, demons, mmm.”

On the verses, Alec Benjamin is thankful for the person who was there for him in each and every way.  “You were there to take away the pain that I felt,” he sings on the first verse, adding on the second, “You forgave me, and you gave me hope.”  The big mystery is WHO Alec is referencing as his savior of sorts.  From a spiritual perspective, it definitely falls in line with songs like “Jesus in LA,” even though this doesn’t necessarily feel like a conversation with the man upstairs.

Final Thoughts

Alec Benjamin has yet to record a bad song.  Maybe it happens, but the singles he’s been releasing have been high quality.  “Demons” is no different, though, I’m not as wowed by it as say “Mind is a Prison” or some of the gems from Narrated for You.  Still, I like the honesty he exhibits, and it’s neat that he leaves an angle of interpretation for the listener since he isn’t specific about who he actually addresses.
