Alec Benjamin, 1994 [Photo Credit: Alec Benjamin]Rising Arizona pop singer/songwriter Alec Benjamin continues to make a compelling case for himself on his birth-year single, “1994.”

“This is where I broke my wrist, where I thought I could fly / Thinking I was Superman, so you know you can’t cry.” Throughout the course of his single “1994,” rising pop singer/songwriter Alec Benjamin reflects upon his childhood.  Naturally, 1994 is the year that the Arizona musician was born, hence why he named the song after that particular year.  Later, the brief chorus confirms this: “I was born in 1994.” Simple enough. In addition to the aforementioned excerpt from the first verse, Benjamin references Campbell’s soup, MTV, and Cholla Street, his residence as a kid.  On the second verse, Benjamin offers a similar script, including Santa Claus, Batman, as well as heavier memories such as September 11, 2001.

The bridge is a change of pace, lifting off the patriotic gem “America.” Benjamin sings:

“My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty

My country tis of thee, be who you wanna be

My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty

My country, my country, my country, my…”

In addition to the lyrical content, Alec Benjamin continues to impress vocally.  He has such a smooth, youthful tone that is incredibly charming and distinct.  The production is relatively low-key, but effective nonetheless.  The backdrop is rhythmic and balanced, never inhibiting Benjamin’s sweet alluring lead.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “1994” gives Alec Benjamin another well-rounded, enjoyable single. He doesn’t reinvent the wheel, nor does he necessarily supplant gems like “If We Only Have Each Other” or “Death of a Hero”.  That said, “1994” continues to find the sensitive, incredibly likable singer/songwriter make a compelling case for himself.
