AJR remain polarizing to some degree, but “Way Less Sad” is well-produced, relative enjoyable, and ultimately, inoffensive.
“Ishould move ‘cause New York is gettin’ muddy out / There’s L.A. but it’s always kinda sunny out / And I don’t wanna hurt no more / So, I set my bar real low.” Woo! That, ladies and gentlemen, is the work of 🎙 AJR. The three bros return in 2021 with a brand-new album, 💿 OK ORCHESTRA (March 26, 2021). The song at hand, 🎵 “Way Less Sad,” marks the fourth advance single from the new LP.
“Way Less Sad” runs just shy of three-and-a-half minutes in duration, which is respectable by all means. One of the pros of the record is the rhythmic identity that’s established at the onset via the instrumental intro (specifically via left hand piano). As always, the production itself is colorful and quite ornate. Some have characterized the AJR sound as ‘overblown,’ but from my perspective, at least “Way Less Sad” itself is pretty ear catching. The instrumental riffs work well. Worth noting, “Way Less Sad” samples 🎵 “My Little Town” by 🎙 Simon & Garfunkel. Beyond the production, we get nice lead vocals by Jack Met. His tone is great, and ultimately, he’s easy on the ears.
Thematically, AJR don’t shy away from their comfort zone. This is part of the reason why some music critics ‘shit on them,’ you might say. Honestly, from my critical perspective, it’s a matter of personal preference if you dig those millennial vibes or totally hate them. It gets old, but, it’s totally bearable here.
Final Thoughts 💭
Yes, at times, I’ve been mixed on AJR. Am I still mixed? Yes. That said, “Way Less Sad,” as a pop record doesn’t irk me. Others may have a different perspective, but personally, it checks off pop boxes: standard, easily accessible form, catchy songwriting (specifically in regard to the chorus), a respectable vocal, and sleek production work. It doesn’t change my life personally, but it’s enjoyable enough.
