Teen pop artist AJ Mitchell makes it clear that saying it “once is never enough” on his latest single released in 2019, “Say it Again.”
“Once you say that shit once, once is never enough.” Yes, yes, YES! Teen pop artist AJ Mitchell wants you to – wait for it – “Say it Again.” “Say it Again” arrives after Mitchell released numerous singles in 2019 and a four-song EP, Slow Dance. The theme centers around a most familiar topic – matters of the heart. Mitchell is 18 (as of publication), so he attempts to balance his younger audience and of course, a more mature one.
The Futuristics give AJ Mitchell a sleek backdrop to work with. The sound is firmly planted in modern pop, with urban and electronic touches thrown into the mix. It’s pretty sick when a totally danceable beat drops as the song progresses. Mitchell uses the production as fuel for his fire, exhibiting the swagger to carry this generally innocent (you did notice the use of “shit,” right), yet sufficiently grown-up pop joint. There is repetition throughout, making this a catchy cut. The chorus is a prime example:
“So, say it a, say it a, say it again Say you love me now Say it a, say it a, say it again Say you love me now Over and over come closer and closer and then, Say it a, say it again.”
Of course, the verses are onboard with saying things more than once, just as AJ said at the top of this review! “And just let it roll, let it roll, let it roll off your tongue.” That was three times. Later, “Let ‘em talk, let ‘em talk, let ‘em say we’re too young.” Two times, but that last part is still very closely associated, sigh.
Final Thoughts
So, the big takeaway that AJ Mitchell wants us to get from “Say It Again?” Don’t “say that shit [just] once – ‘SAY IT AGAIN!’” All in all, this is an enjoyable pop record. Mitchell doesn’t reinvent the wheel, nor say that much himself, but at the same time, it’s pretty clear what he’s going for.
