AJ Mitchell, Girls [Photo Credit: Epic]On his fun, up-tempo single “Girls,” rising teen-pop artist AJ Mitchell simply can’t get the opposite sex off his mind.  That’s to be expected – he’s only 17.

“I’ve got me a problem / I wanna get with all of them / Oh, when I get too close / Like the bad ones most / I can’t say no.” AJ Mitchell highlights a problem that the male species has had for a minute – infatuation with girls.  Perhaps it’s worse when you’re as young as Mitchell is – all of 17 – but, sometimes it extends way into adulthood. Fittingly, the title of the rising teen-pop artist’s single is “Girls.”

As the aforementioned pre-chorus illustrates, the script of “Girls” is familiar and predictable.  On the first verse, young AJ asserts he’s trying to remain focused, but the girls keep getting at him (“They keep on hittin’ my phone up, oh / Say, come and get it”).  The case is the same on the second verse, where “they putting pictures in my mind.” On the chorus, he makes the big reveal that so many red-blooded teens, twenty-somethings and even beyond experience.

“Keep thinking ‘bout ‘em (girls!) / If they get in my way / Got myself thinking about ‘em all day (girls!) …/ I wanna get to know these girls.”

To reiterate, everything the kids sings is tried-and-true. But, he has an appealing tenor, not to mention a sleek, electro-pop backdrop that fuels the fire.

Final Thoughts

AJ Mitchell is definitely worth checking out.  The best thing about “Girls” the song is Mitchell whose range is incredibly impressive.  At just 17, he can only get better and better with time.  The production is modern and slick, if a bit on the busy side.  Even so, it doesn’t take away from the excellence of the young, rising star who is, as expected at his age, obsessed with girls.
