Goth-rock vets AFI return with The Blood Album, their first LP since 2013. “Get Hurt” was the fourth and final advance single.

It’s hard to believe that AFI has been around since the 1990s.  Alas, it’s true. The Cali band returns after a four-year hiatus with The Blood Album.  AFI have experienced minor success over the years, earning two platinum-certified albums. Four singles were released ahead of The Blood Album.  “Get Hurt” the fourth and final pre-release single from The Blood Album.

“Get Hurt” features dark, rhythmic guitars.  Notably, exceptional guitar work characterizes the chorus and bridge sections in particular.  During the pre-chorus section, the band bestows the listener with harmonized vocals.  The pre-chorus itself changes with each verse. Even so, both pre-choruses are written similarly: “Follow me down the road / I’m promising I will be a good boy.” The chorus is simple – nothing too deep:

“I can’t let you see, I can’t let you see
I can’t let you see me sleeping
I can’t let you see, I may have to leave
I can’t let you see me sleeping.”

Like previous single “Snow Cats,” there are some isolated moments that feel like they need a bit more punch.  While there is no shame in frontman Davey Havok’s voice being the centerpiece, at times it does sound a bit too exposed.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Get Hurt” gives AFI another respectable, enjoyable single ahead of The Blood Album.
