1. Billie Eilish, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER”
HIT ME HARD AND SOFT // Darkroom / Interscope // 2024
“I want you to stay / ‘Til I’m in the grave / ‘Til I rot away, dead and buried / ‘Til I’m in the casket you carry.” The love that a hypnotic Billie Eilish sings about on “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” is special – once-in-a-lifetime. A more subdued vocalist, Eilish’s approach and style are mesmerizing. On the fourth track from her commercially successful and critically acclaimed third album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, Billie never forces things, delivering sweet, easygoing, and amorous vocals. As usual, her right-hand man, brother, and fellow Grammy and Academy Award winner, FINNEAS (Finneas O’Connell), co-wrote and produced “BIRDS OF A FEATHER.” Ear-catching, “BIRDS” is groovy from the onset and never lets up.
With her angelic lead vocals, Billie Eilish delivers tuneful melodies during the verses and chorus. Furthermore, she delivers memorable lyrics. “But you’re so full of shit, uh / Tell me it’s a bit,” she sings in the second verse, “Say you don’t see it, your mind’s polluted / Say you wanna quit, don’t be stupid.” The chorus is the section to beat, of course:
“Birds of a feather, we should stick together, I know (‘Til the day that I die)
I said I’d never think I wasn’t better alone (‘Til the light leaves my eyes)
Can’t change the weather, might not be forever (‘Til the day that I die)
But if it’s forever, it’s even better.”
Besides those refined lead vocals, the harmonized background vocals are sweet, too. A big-time hit for Eilish, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” peaked at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, among her highest-charting singles. “I don’t think I could love you more.” So, so sweet!

2. The Weeknd, “Baptized in Fear”
Hurry Up Tomorrow // The Weeknd XO Music ULC / Republic // 2025
“I fell asleep in the tub, I was met with paralysis / My foot hit the faucet, water started flowing in.” Uh-oh, The Weeknd – that sounds like a horrible situation. Paralysis occurs when you’re unable to make voluntary muscle movements, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Not good! He continues singing in the sole verse of “Baptized In Fear”, “Couldn’t scream for help, I just slowly felt the pressure hit / Moving one toe was the only form of motion left.” The picture that Abel Tesfaye paints in the sixth track from Hurry Up Tomorrow is life-threatening. Death, in some form or fashion, is possible (“Figure in the corner I can’t quite see / I just know the shadow’s staring at me”). Despite this shadow and his ‘slowing heartbeat’ in the pre-chorus, in the chorus, “Voices tell me that I should carry on.” Word. Who are the voices? Angels?
The Weeknd, Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never), and Nathan Salon composed “Baptized in Fear.” The Weeknd, Salon, Oneohtrix Point Never, and MIKE DEAN produced it. The musical backdrop is sensational – ear-catching to the nth degree. Even so, it is The Weeknd who ‘steals the show’ with his radiant vocals. Tesfaye sings authentically, putting his all into this introspective ballad. “I’ve been baptized in fear, my dear,” he sings in the bridge, adding, “Like Paul, I’m the chief of sin / Washing my soul within, oh.” The Paul he cites was the famous Apostle of Jesus and the author of many books of the Bible. The spiritual references make “Baptized In Fear” that much more special. Is this a religious song? No, but, The Weeknd is incredibly reflective as he thinks about life, his musical career, and the future. Marvelous vocals, love, rhythmic melodies, thoughtful songwriting, and superb production make “Baptized In Fear” a surefire winner from Hurry Up Tomorrow.

3. LISA, “Born Again” (Ft. Doja Cat & RAYE)
Alter Ego // RCA // 2025
“If you tried just a little more times / I would’ve made you a believer.” Amen… I think! Thai singer and rapper LISA (Lisa Manobal) has salvation on her mind on “Born Again”, a single from her debut album, ALTER EGO. This spiritual experience doesn’t come without friends – Grammy-winner Doja Cat (Amala Dlamini) and Grammy nominee RAYE (Rachel Keen). Doja Cat, RAYE, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wells penned “Born Again.” RAYE and Wells produced it.
“Born Again” commences enigmatically in a minor key. It features warm, colorful, sleek production: keys, pads, synths, bass line, and sickening groove. Following a slower tempo initially, “Born Again” grooves something fierce. After the intro, LISA brings mad attitude in the first verse: “I’m about to make it heard as I vroom-vroom / Ice-cold how I leave you ‘lone, but please / Tell your mother I’ma miss her so.” Damn! Doja Cat is true to self, rapping in the second verse: “Non-believer / You’ve bitten from the fruit but can’t give back / Nice to leave ya / But I would be a fool not to ask / Do your words seem gospel to ya now?” Those spiritual references eat, even if true salvation is not the modus operandi. The tuneful chorus is the section to beat, performed by RAYE and LISA. It is excerpted in the intro, that sets the tone.
“If you tried just a little more times
I would’ve made you a believer
Would’ve showed you what it’s like (Like)
Every single night (Night)
To be born again, baby, to be born again
If you stayed just another few nights
I could’ve made you pray to Jesus
Would’ve showed you to the light (To the light)
Every single night (Every night)
To be born again, baby, to be born again.”
Ooh-wee! The rhythmic bridge by RAYE is electrifying, particularly her soulful runs. Ultimately, “Born Again” has bop written all over it. LISA, Doja Cat, and RAYE eat this one up!

4. Yeat, “BË QUIET” (Ft. Kodak Black)
LYFESTYLE // Field Trip Recordings / Capitol // 2024
“Way too rich, LYFESTYLE / Off with what? Off with your head (Head, yeah),” Yeat raps in the chorus of “BË QUIET.” “BË QUIET” is the eighth track from his 2024 album, LYFESTYLE, which he referenced in the chorus’ opening lyrics. He continues rapping, “Diamond on me, blind ‘em like they seein’ black, huh, ha / Whole car matte black and the windows tinted, huh.” Yeat is rich, along with being unapologetic in the lengthy chorus. Featured guest Kodak Black is responsible for the sole verse. Does he say much? Nope: “I don’t want weed, I’m on a bean / I’m a roller, not a stoner / Even rehab gon’ hurt / You can’t even pay me to be sober.” Woo! Dream Awake, Chef9thegod, and Cloud produced the malicious-sounding, minor-key joint. “BË QUIET” is not deep, but it is a vibe. Oh, the powers that BE!

5. Latto, “Blick Sum” (Ft. Playboi Carti)
“Blick Sum” (Ft. Playboi Carti) // Streamcut / RCA // 2025
“I don’t trust no man without no blicky / ‘Cause when shit get sticky, where the fuck that blicky at?” If you need the intro from “Blick Sum” translated, Latto is NOT referencing the art supply company, BLICK®. A blick/blicky is slang for a gun. Tthe Grammy-nominated rapper informs us she doesn’t trust a man without a gun. The intro alone signals that “Blick Sum” is a hard-nosed rap banger. Latto taps rapper Playboi Carti for the assist. Kid Hazel, Ricci Riera, Evil Nani, and W$Kharri produced “Blick Sum.” Not only does Latto want him to “Throw up your set for me,” she also asserts, “That pistol get that pussy wet, now come have sex we me.” You can’t have gun talk without mentioning a different type of gun. “Hit somethin’ (Boop), if you love me (If you love me).” Latto raps over a malicious-sounding, minor-key instrumental. Non troppo, “Blick Sum” features a skeletal backdrop (drum programming and synth). Of course, Latto makes up for the lack of instrumentation with her unapologetic rhymes and compelling cadence and flow. Playboi Carti keeps in G like Latto in the second verse: “I got a smiley face on my tab, poppin’ on Tes’ / I told Latto, ‘Put ‘em in the hole, put ‘em in the casket.’” “Blick Sum” isn’t game-changing but enjoyable.

6. Rema, “Baby (Is It a Crime)”
“Baby (Is it a Crime)” // Marvin Global Holdings Ltd / Jonzing World Entertainment // 2025
“Love is in the air, baby, breathe in.” Nigerian singer, songwriter, and rapper Rema (Divine Ikubor) brings the vibes on “Baby (Is it a Crime)”. “Baby” was produced by Nigerian producer, P. Priime (Peace Emmanuel Oredope). “Baby” is set in a minor key, which gives the track a darker sound. The track commences with an enigmatic intro with sampled vocals: “Is it a crime? / Is it a crime / That I still want you / And I want you to want me too?” Specifically, multiple elements of “Is It a Crime”, by Sade, from the band’s 1985 album, Promise, are sampled. That is great source material!
Rema delivers a chill, cool, swagger-laden performance. Fittingly, he performs in his native Nigerian dialect. Post-intro, Ikubor performs the centerpiece, the chorus: “Baby (Rema), baby sun mọ́ mí / You know say you match my steeze / You know I’m a G.” Rema also drops ear-catching verses, filled with sensual references. “Baby, go down low, nobody gats to know / Oya, I know I play around, but me no fit to let you go,” he sings in the first verse. In the second, he adds, “The way you move this your body na weapon, ah-ahn /Catch me off guard, me I hands up kparam.” In the third verse, he spoils her:
“Buy you a Birkin matching my AP color
Treat you like omo-mo
Pampering on a hunnid
Baby, you the one for me, ooh.”
The melodies are rhythmic. The production work is warm with accompaniment featuring keys, strings, and a sickening drum groove. “Baby (Is it a Crime)” is lit – an Afrobeats bop, PERIOD!

7. Halle, “Because I Love You”
“Because I Love You” // Parkwood Entertainment LLC / Columbia // 2024
“And it’s all because I love you, babe / Love you, babe, love you, babe.” Ooh wee, that is a lot of love, Halle (Halle Bailey)! Grammy-nominated R&B singer, songwriter, and actress Halle dropped a surefire bop in 2024. In “Because I Love You”, she sings angelically over warm, contemporary R&B production by Dem Jointz. In the chorus, the first major section of the song, Bailey’s voice is warm and lush. She does drop some profanity, intensifying the love (“I motherfucking love you, babe”). Even securing the parental advisory sticker with the ‘mf bomb,’ the chorus is infectious and memorable to the nth degree. Furthermore, it is the verses that have more attitude.
After that ‘kinder, gentler’ chorus, “Because I Love You” grows more assertive in sound. Halle is never ‘over aggressive,’ but she does bring attitude. See the end of the first verse, which drops another f-bomb: “You ain’t used to girls that can make it high fashion / Fuckin’ with a ten, amen.” Word! The love is still pronounced in the second verse sans profanity: “You put me in the car, and you always put me first / Even when I’m the worst, even when I make it hurt.” Great background vocals enhance the color. Notably, Grammy-nominated English musician RAYE packs a mean punch on the outro (“Love you, babe / Love you, babe / Love you, babe / It’s all because, all because”). “Because I Love You” is fantastic!

8. Jake Hole & DigBar, “Butt Destruction”
“Butt Destruction” // Creamville // 2024
“Knock a dude out his panties / Dick with a bush like it’s Cheney / Meat sticking up like antennae / Get balls deep in my butt, huh.” Jake Hole and DigBar join forces for the butt-loving, and destroying anthem, “Butt Destruction”. Jake Hole is responsible for the ultra-horny chorus. He wants to be the recipient of the ‘destruction.’ Well, at least in that instance. Hole also raps the first verse where he appears to be the aggressor of this ‘but destruction’ aka, the top: “Breaking his spin when I’m giving that bone / Kill the booty dead like a bullet to the dome.” Oh, snap! Also, Jake is proud of his endowment: “Weiner don’t fit on the ruler / When I pull out, his booty go ‘Pop’ like a Ruger.” Damn!
The NSFW “Butt Destruction” features metal-infused production. The rock edge ups the ante. There is a guitar solo towards the end (during an instrumental break/interlude). Jake Hole and DigBar, who ‘kills it’ in the second verse, unleash compelling cadences and flows. DigBar continues the anally-driven rhymes – they’re gay, gay, gay! “Kill a nigga butt then get away with it like OJ,” he spits, adding, “He asked if he could look inside my butt, so I said, ‘Okay.’” Is anyone shocked by his answer? Didn’t think so. Other highlights include “I’m beating his cheeks till the booty get sore,” “I’m busting a nut, now there’s kids on the floor,” “Got butt on my mind, I’m the gay rap Melly,” and “I’ma call that nigga ‘rope’ the way he giving me that neck.” Rope… wow! Anal sex songs only come every so often… “Butt Destruction” fits the billing – length, girth, and all!

9. Kylie Cantrall, “Boy For a Day”
“Boy For a Day” // Artist Partner Group, Inc. / Heroine Music, LLC // 2024
“Oh, if I could be a boy for a day / I would play hearts just like video games.” Kylie Cantrall has spoken! In the escapist pop joint “Boy For a Day,” she expresses what she’d do as the opposite sex if given a chance. Boys, we get away with a lot, after all! In the infectious chorus, the first major section of the song, she continues singing, “I would slide on all your friends / Like there ain’t no consequence, no / If I could be a boy for a day.” Cantrall penned “Boy” alongside Lisa Scinta and Jim Lavigne, Rodney Jerkins, Sermstyle, Will Grands, and House of Wolf produced it. The single is exciting beyond its boyish chorus! “I’d go around braggin’ about my body count,” Cantrall asserts in the first verse, adding, “Ghost you all day, then I come through / Isn’t that what being a boy is all about?” The second verse also criticizes the opposite sex’s ways: “I’d get an award for how many times I made you cry.” Noted, Kylie. Boys are something else, and “Boy For a Day” clearly proves the point that we need to do better. As for Kylie, she slays vocally while the production/sound of the record hearkens back to the glorious R&B of the 90s and early 00s. Boys take the L, but the song is a bop!

10. JORDY, “BREAKUP SEX”
SEX WITH MYSELF AND IT LASTS LONGER // JORDY / EMPIRE // 2024
“Felt so good until it burned / But I ain’t ever one to leave behind loose ends.” In some cases, the ‘burn’ isn’t a good feeling… at least sexually. But in the context of the first verse of “BREAKUP SEX” by JORDY, our handsome pop singer/songwriter isn’t referencing an STI… In this case, his relationship with his boyfriend has gone south. That said, a key component of his single isn’t about their demise but about what they do before their demise. “Darlin’, you want me, you got me / One last time.” Yes, before they call it quits, they ‘hit it.’ JORDY and producer POM POM penned this sexual happening. And who’s to judge, especially if the soon-to-be ex-boyfriend was good in bed?
“Breakup sex
You and me undressed
Only one night left
Do it like we’ll never do it again
Get wet, leave it all in the bed
Do what we do best
‘Cause you know we’re gonna do it again.”
Reading into the shallow chorus where sex is king, one has to ask, beyond the breakup sex, will they hook up down the line again? Also, analyzing the relationship, how much of a role did sex play in it? Emotionally, things aren’t sound (“All my tears only fed your flame”) but sexually… (“And always pleasure coming with the pain”). JORDY ‘brings the heat’ to his performance, singing beautifully and enticing us fiercely. Who doesn’t desire to be the recipient of that good sex? With a fabulous instrumental and a tuneful melody, “BREAKUP SEX” is the S-H-I-T!

11. Charli XCX, “B2b” (Ft. Tinashe)
Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat // Atlantic // 2024
“Back to back to back to back to back to back to back.” Ooh-wee, that’s seven backs! Charli XCX leaves no doubt what her song “B2b” stands for – back to back! It originally appeared on her iconic, Grammy-winning 2024 album, Brat. “B2b” reappears, in remixed form, as the 12th track on Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat. Charli enlists the services of another sickening artist, Tinashe. “B2b” benefits from its seek production (Finn Keane and LIOHN) with an ill groove and bright synths. The chorus, excerpted above, is simple but infectious.
Beyond the chorus, Charli XCX delivers confident yet easygoing vocals. “I travel ‘round the world to fifteen countries in four days,” she sings in the first verse, adding, “I’m fuckin’ tired, but I love it and I’m not complainin’ / Oh, shit, I kinda made it.” Indeed, Charli! In the second verse, she moves beyond pitch to chanted lines, gassing up Tinashe (“‘Cause we made ‘em ‘Boom Clap,’ made ‘em get ‘2 On’”). Expectedly, Tinashe provides a fabulous guest appearance, ‘bringing the heat’ as always in the third verse:
“Boutta run it back
The way my ass look in these jeans, I’m boutta throw it back (Back, back)
When they see us out here winning, they get so mad
Now I’m feeling on myself, I don’t know how to act (Act, act, act, act).”
Word! “B2b” is the sugar honey iced tea! Notably, the remix is shorter than the original by nearly 30 seconds. It doesn’t matter – Charli XCX and Tinashe ‘do the damn thing,’ back to back to back!

12._SANTI_ & Samjgarfield, “BUKAKKE”
DADDY (EP) // SANTI // 2024
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5 / Let’s make a group shoot / Do you got milk? /… To make my milkshake.” Oh, boy… or should I say, oh boys
! The fierce and handsome_SANTI_, collaborating with music producer, songwriter, and the very-easy-on-the-eyes Samjgarfield (SJG), doesn’t waste any time getting to what he desires in “BUKAKKE”, the NSFW third track from his late 2024 EP, DADDY. Just in case you didn’t catch what was implied lyrically, bukkake is a sexual practice in which several men ejaculate on the face of an individual. The group, shoot, and milk make sense within the context of the lyrics now, right? Oh, and as for the milkshake, we already know “it brings all the boys to the yard”. Anyways, if you do happen to Google search bukkake, some search results will yield p0rn – fair warning!
Sex-positivity is full throttle from our fearless and handsome pop artist. His attitude is through the roof, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. “Milkman got me waiting for a milky treat / I be the Dairy Queen / Blizzard,” he sings, lustily, adding, “Put it all on me.” Embracing his role of “Pumping daddies,” he encourages the men, “Come and dump you come and you go.” Come and dump are the keywords… then again, the ‘go’ should be noted too. _SANTI_ doesn’t stop there. Besides being “Vers like Hannah Montana,” and “Cockiana barbiana,” we get a killer verse in Spanish, signaled by a production switch. And by killer, there is a Jeffrey Dahmer reference: “Más freaky que Jeffrey Dahmer / Te la Saco como una prepago / Santi sabe que yo te lo hago” – “Freakier than Jeffrey Dahmer / I’ll take it from you like a hooker / Santi knows that I do it to you.” Holy fucking shit! Backed by badass music accompaniment (get it, SJG), _SANTI_ ‘does the damn thing’ on the risqué, utterly satisfying “BUKAKKE”.

13. ScHoolboy Q, “Blueslides”
BLUE LIPS // Interscope / Top Dawg Entertainment // 2024
“Blue slides, I’ve been slidin’ through your whole shit, yeah / Presidential Rollies, I took big risks.” Surprisingly, Grammy-nominated rapper ScHoolboy Q was not nominated for a Grammy for his sixth studio album, BLUE LIPS, released in 2024. I say that to say that some of the nominees for Best Rap album at the 2025 GRAMMY Awards were weak – look at you, J. Cole, Might Delete Later, and Eminem, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). Anyways, “Blueslides” is the intriguing fourth track from BLUE LIPS – a tribute of sorts to the late Mac Miller (“Lost a homeboy to the drugs, man, I ain’t tryna go backwards”). Produced by J.LBS, Jason Wool, Mario Luciano, and Tae Beast, “Blue Slides” features classy, jazzy-sounding production. I love the buttery smooth vocals, muted trumpet, piano, and string bass. Upping the ante are classy, ultra-lush strings. Q raps with ease over the ultra-refined backdrop. Don’t get it twisted, though – ScHoolboy Q still keeps it ‘all the way real!’ “Better climb out of that hole before you fuck your blessings,” Q raps in the first verse, continuing, “‘Fore you realize that it’s over with and start to get desperate.” He also references his house arrest, mental health, and giving back. There is an eyebrow-raising, memorable lyric related to former Vice President Kamala Harris in the second verse (“Got me a little money, now we best friends / If Kamala freed the homies we’d all be lit”). Notably, the democratic presidential candidate was criticized for her criminal justice policies as a prosecutor.

14. Billie Eilish, “BLUE”
HIT ME HARD AND SOFT // Darkroom / Interscope // 2024
“I try to live in black and white, but I’m so blue.” Noted. “BLUE” is the 10th and final track from HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, the Grammy-nominated third album by Academy and Grammy-winning alternative pop singer/songwriter Billie Eilish. A two-part song, the concluding cut from HIT ME HARD AND SOFT runs nearly six minutes long. Eilish does what she does best: serve up cool, calm, and collected vocals. She sounds stunning. Eilish composed “BLUE” alongside her talented brother, FINNEAS, who also produced it.
“I thought we were the same / Birds of a feather, now I’m ashamed,” Eilish sings in the verse of part one of “BLUE,” ‘True Blue.’ ‘True Blue’ benefits from tuneful melodies, gorgeous background vocals, and ear-catching production cues. ‘Sound’ highlights include the groove, as well as the bass. A change of pace occurs before the two-minute mark, signaling part two, ‘Born Blue.’ “You were born bluer than a butterfly / Beautiful and so deprived of oxygen,” Billie sings in the first verse, continuing, “Colder than your father’s eyes / He never learned to sympathize with anyone.” During ‘Born Blue,’ the tempo is slower. Her performance is hypnotic as she paints a vivid portrait of the blueness of this nameless person, seemingly an ex. Around the three-and-a-half-minute mark, a thudding kick enters the mix, as well as distinct, low vocals. Just before the four-minute mark, the full-fledged drum groove reveals itself. The section to beat is the chorus:
“I don’t blame you
But I can’t change you
Don’t hate you (Don’t hate you)
But we can’t save you (But we can’t save you).”
The songwriting is on-point and marvelously incorporates blueness throughout, including the bridge (“Just a baby born blue now, now”). Another musical touch stands out: strings. Those dramatic, lush, and picturesque strings conclude “BLUE” which is one of the best songs from HIT ME HARD AND SOFT.

15. Queen, “Body Language”
Hot Space // Hollywood // 1982
“Give me, body / Give me your body.” Queen delivered a sex song with “Body Language”. It’s attributed to the legendary prog rock band, but this song has Freddie Mercury written all over it. Mercury did pen the fourth track from the band’s 1982 album, Hot Space. Queen and Reinhold Mack produced it. It sounds starkly different from the band’s earlier output. The departure in sound is part of the controversy.
I find “Body Language” to be an intriguing four-and-a-half-minute song. The guitar by Brian May is spare as keys and synths rule the roost. The drums are electronic. The iconic bass line isn’t a bass guitar but rather a bass synth. Stylistically, it leans more post-disco, dance-rock, and synth-pop. The lyrics are simple to the nth degree. Phrases Mercury sings include “Don’t talk” (repeated thrice), “Sexy body / Sexy, sexy body / I want your body,” and “Baby, you’re hot.” The chorus keeps it uncomplicated, too: “Body language / Body language / Body language.” The simplistic lyrics sufficiently evoke sex, but there is one moment, the bridge, where Mercury is even more attuned to sex:
“You got red lips
Snakes in your eyes
Long legs
Great thighs
You’ve got the cutest ass I’ve ever seen
Knock me down for a six anytime.”
May and Roger Taylor have commented many times that this song was far different from others. Also, it felt too gay for them. Even beyond Mercury bringing his bandmates into the LGBTQ+ world against their will, the ‘actual’ controversy behind “Body Language” was the music video. MTV banned it because it was considered incredibly risqué at the time – too sexual. Today, the video is quite tame – not nearly as spicy as the videos many artists release to shock. “Body Language” was a change of pace and departure for Queen. It is not the top of their catalog, but infectious, nonetheless. It also reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

16. Paco, “BODY SHOP.” (Ft. Tommy Richman)
Paco // “Body Shop” // 2024
“Tell me what you’re sippin’ on, baby / I take you to the body shop, crazy.” Early on, Paco is on some sensual shit on “BODY SHOP.”. In the chorus, the first section heard, he continues singing, “Lil mama, how you move it like that, uh / Tell your friend, if she like it, like that, uh.” Ah, he’s thinking with those pants, ain’t he? Paco enlists the services of Tommy Richman for the assist on this vibe-laden hip-hop joint. Paco and Richman penned it, while Jonah Roy, Kavi, and Maxwell Vossberg produced it. The sound palette is ear-catching and groovy to the nth degree. Following the chorus, Paco delivers the first verse. He’s confident and ready to ‘do something.’ “Damn, she got a body like that / Tell me if I got it, she can throw it right back,” he asserts, adding, “Her body lies, so I can’t save her, no, no.” Um, sure… Richman arrives in the second verse, with his fair share of f-bombs. “You’re the realest in the room, I’ve done it / But you’re never in the mood, I’ll fuck ya / I’ll fuck it all, but I wanna return yo lip balm…” The lyrics are, um, something else on “BODY SHOP.” but the vibe ‘vibes hard.’

17. Megan Thee Stallion, “Broke His Heart”
MEGAN // Hot Girl Productions LLC // 2024
“That pussy broke a nigga heart, broke his heart, uh.” Ooh-wee, Megan The Stallion
! Comin’ in hot, gurl! “This pussy got grip (yeah), pussy made him trick (ah) / This pussy here turn a real nigga to a bitch.” In “Broke His Heart”, the fifth track from Megan, the third studio album by the Grammy-winning rapper, she says pussy nine times in the chorus alone
. For the most part, she brags about how good ‘it’ is. At the end of the chorus, keeping things sexual, she implores him to “Dick me down, slut me out, put it in my ribs, ayy / Grab my throat and up my wrists.” Holy shit
! Tay Keith produced the NSFW joint which samples “I Luv It” by Jeezy.
The chorus is a lot. However, that’s not the extent of Megan Thee Stallion kicking ass and taking names with her bars. She’s bold, confident, unapologetic, and sexed-up throughout the sole verse. “What I’m doin’ on the ‘Gram, I can do on the dick,” she asserts, adding, “Do a split on it (yeah), suck and spit on it.” Damn! Also, a prerequisite for sexing: “Hope you could handle all this shape, ‘cause I ain’t fuckin’ with no squares.” She’s picky, y’all ! Even being sex-positive, Megan informs us, “That’s my dick and I don’t share.” Megan ends the verse with a ‘bang’
: “Booty so nice, bitches think my shit fake… / I like girls and I like niggas (yeah), both of ‘em gettin’ ate (ah) / And when he slip it in, that pussy feel great.” Did you catch that bisexual reference? “Broke His Heart” is somethin’ else! It is NOT SAFE FOR WORK, PERIOD! EXCLAMATION POINT!

“Buttcheeks” // Mad Love / Interscope // 2018
“Eyes wide open / Drowning, I’m choking / Worry ‘bout a butt cheek / Bitch, you can miss me.” Sadly, 6 Dogs (Ronald Chase Amick) died at just 21 years old in 2021. His major-label debut single, “Buttcheeks”, released in 2018, showcases his immense potential. At the time, the Atlanta rapper was still a teenager. The interestingly titled “Buttcheeks” was written by Amick, benny blanco, Cashmere Cat, and Romy (Romy Madley Croft). Blanco and Cashmere Cat produced it.
“Buttcheeks” commences with enigmatic instrumental sounds. As the song develops, it adds marvelous drum programming. The beat is ‘non troppo’ but provides a terrific anchor. 6 Dogs delivers clear, easygoing melodic vocals in the chorus. Notably, Amick sounds as if he ‘floats’ as he raps, embracing cloud rap to the nth degree. The first verse is simple, mellow, melodic, and features few words. One of the cool references is to the short-lived television show Freaks and Geeks: “Monte Carlo creaking / Loud pack reeking / Yeah, I feel like I’m Bill, whoa / ‘Cause they way that I’m geeking.” Woo! The second verse is patterned similarly to the first. “Teardrops on a keyboard / Non-stop to the top floor,” he raps, adding, “Crocodile drop top / Wipe your eyes, yeah, you’ll see more.” The bridge features some cool vocal effects and some of the most intriguing lyrics: “‘Cause I think it was laced /… Fuck, it was laced / Hit the ground with my face / At least it’s Persian”). On “Buttcheeks”, 6 Dogs perfectly captures his emotions and highness. Furthermore, he gets a killer Cole Bennett-directed music video, intact with, you guessed it, butt cheeks. They are censored, though. R.I.P. Ronald.

19. Lil Peep & Nedarb, “beamer boy”
CALIFORNIA GIRLS (EP) // Death Note Music, LLC / AWAL Recordings America, Inc. // 2016
“Ain’t nobody, nobody was talkin’ to me like a few months ago / And now everybody hittin’ my phone up and shit.” No doubt, Lil Peep (Gustav Åhr)! As a member of Schemaposse, the emo rapper experienced a massive come-up. Sadly, the once ascending rapper and singer saw his career and life cut short in 2017 when he died of an accidental overdose at 21 years old. “Beamer boy” arrived in 2016 as the fourth track from the deceased rapper’s CALIFORNIA GIRLS (EP). Nedarb produced the highlight, which commences with a scream, followed by rhythmic guitar accompanying the spoken word by the rapper (excerpted above). Soon enough, a synth brightens the backdrop. With the entrance of the sole verse (or however you’d like to name it), repeated twice, “beamer boy” is anchored by a badass beat. Lil Peep radiates with energy, amped up by sickening vocal production. In the hella energetic verse, he proclaims, “I’m a motherfuckin’ Schema’ boy, I’m a dreamer boy / I love a girl that don’t even fuckin’ need a boy / Baby I’m a beamer boy, I need a beamer, boy / I want a Z3, that’s a two-seater, boy.” Woo! It doesn’t stop there, of course as Lil Peep drops his fair share of dope bars like “I got death notes, where my list at?” and “You see me doin’ shows now, I’m a pro now / I got hoes now and I got some dough now / But they don’t wanna hear that, they want that real shit / They want that ‘drug talk,’ that ‘I can’t feel shit’.” Lil Peep may be dead, but his fierce bangers like the multiplatinum “Beamer boy” endure.

20. Patti Smith Group, “Because the Night”
Easter // Arista // 1978
“Love is an angel disguised as lust / Here in our bed until the morning comes.” Ooh-wee! Patti Smith, ‘the high priestess of punk-poetry,’ was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. That is a big deal. Surprisingly, by pop standards, Smith has one hit to her name. That one hit wonder, “Because the Night”, is attributed to the Patti Smith Group. It is the third track from the group’s 1978 album, Easter. “Night” peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Notably, Smith penned the song with a fellow rock legend, Bruce Springsteen. Springsteen had begun writing it initially. Smith finished the song. Jimmy Iovine is responsible for getting Springsteen to give Smith the song. He also produced it.
“Because the Night” commences with piano accompaniment. Smith sings quietly and reservedly initially. “Take me now, baby, here as I am / Pull me close, try and understand,” she sings in the first verse, continuing, “Desire is hunger, it’s the fire I breathe / Love is a banquet on which we feed.” Soon, “Because of You” becomes bigger, and Smith belts. It features dramatic, hard-rocking musical accompaniment. The punk energy is prevalent in this non-punk-rock song. I love the heaviness of the sound of the drums. Later, there is also an electrifying electric guitar solo. Rock on! The melodies are tuneful, while the overall songwriting instrumentally and lyrically are strong. The chorus is the section to beat:
“Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us.”
Great contrast is provided in the bridge. The songwriting continues to be ‘on point’ as Smith asserts, “With love we sleep / With doubt the vicious circle turns and burns / Without you, I cannot live.” Smith may have only notched one hit, but “Because the Night” is a rad one. Patti Smith ate this track up !

21. The O’Jays, “Brandy”
So Full of Love // Sony Music Entertainment // 1978
“But how could it be, she ran away from me / My best friend’s gone, I’m so alone.” “Brandy” is the fifth track on So Full of Love, the 1978 album by the iconic soul collective, The O’Jays. “Brandy” was penned by Charles Simmons and Joseph Jefferson. The Philly soul vibes they’re renowned for are in full effect: strings, primarily, and a tight rhythm section. Thom Bell, one of the great Philly soul proponents, produced the gem. “Brandy” impacted the pop charts modestly, peaking at no. 79 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“I thought I’d get up and take a look around, but my feet got in the way,” lead vocalist Walter Williams sings in the first verse, adding, “Stumbled to the floor, she was right in the door, I could see her face.” She is a dog. Never underestimate the effect of ‘man’s best friend.’ Throughout, Williams sings with incredible nuance and soul. He gets the assistance of the rest of The O’Jays (Eddie Levert and Sammy Strain) in the chorus.
“I really miss you, Brandy, I’m so all alone
When are you coming back home?
I really miss you, Brandy, missing you every day
Are you coming home to stay?”
The chorus is stellar – one for the ages. The melodies are lovely throughout “Brandy”. The lyrics are also clever (“But I was in love when they put it down / Oh, my doorstep in the rain / I could feel it coming to my heart, through my window pane”). The O’Jays excelled at making hits. “Brandy” wasn’t another top 40 hit, but, it is one of their best songs. Williams eats those lead vocals up!
