2018 has been kind to New York rapper 6ix9ine – at least in some respects.  He comes off the biggest commercial hit of his career with “FEFE” featuring Nicki Minaj.  “FEFE” was definitely out of character from what we’ve heard from the rapper in the past with the boisterous rhymes of “GUMMO”, “KEKE”,  and “KOODA” (Day 69). Once again, the rapper shocks the world by changing things up.  This time, he pairs up with Puerto Rican trap artist, Anuel AA for a Latin rap/pop cut, “BEBE.” Some will love it, others, not so much.

“Baby con ra-ta-ta-ta-ta / Baby, yo soy tu criminal.” True to its Latin identity, “BEBE” is sung/pop-rapped exclusively in Spanish.  Unless you are well-versed in Spanish, sometimes it’s difficult to understand what the premise of the record is.  In the case of “BEBE,” it’s a Spanish love/sex song, with some of the English translations being risqué. Is that surprising with either of the two artists? Nope. A perfect example of risqué is Anuel’s second verse:

“And she gets off with me on the record in the Ferrari…

And we f**k and we always, we came at the same time

I made love to you and in your skin I got tangled up…”

In regards to the sound, the production is bright, set in a major key.  The synths are lovely, while the beat is idiomatic of reggaetón. 6ix9ine is drenched in autotune, while Anuel AA also has plenty of effects on his own instrument.  After each performing separate verses successively, both perform the chorus – first Anuel, then 6ix9ine.

Final Thoughts

While 3:38 isn’t a lengthy duration, “BEBE” is so repetitive, based around a loop, that it feels longer than it really is; could use more variation. It is an interesting record, though pretty far-fetched for 6ix9ine, not Anuel AA of course. Not necessarily my cup of tea, despite the fact that I’m a Latin music fan, but not necessarily feeling this one for 6ix9ine.
