1. ETHAN, “Single in the Club”

DIVINE INTERVENTION (EP) // ETHAN // 2024

ETHAN, DIVINE INTERVENTION (EP) [📷: ETHAN]“Loosen my body / Got me all choked up / Stressed out for what? / Now I’m off your drug.” ETHAN (Ethan Choryin Luo) – what a beautiful man 😍! Beyond dashing good looks, the musician from Auckland, New Zealand, based in Sydney, Australia, is talented. “Single in the Club”, the second track from his 2024 EP, DIVINE INTERVENTION, is brief but ultra-sexy – filled with swagger. “One at a time, they’re coming at me / Under disguise, brand-new city,” he sings, continuing, “Slowly defining what it means to be / Free.” “Single” is slickly produced by Luo, Zach Bahn, Adam Buckingham, and Benjamin DeSoto Mayor. The instrumental gives urban-dance-pop vibes that sound clubby. His voice is youthful and nuanced, flaunting a fabulous tone.  The riffs and runs are fabulous too. There are pitch-shifted vocals and sickening vocal effects in play. The melodic lines are fast-paced and rhythmic. The songwriting (him and Isadora Soliman) feels liberated, loose, and ‘ready for some action’:

“Won’t recognize me I’m moving different

Got up my stacks, brand-new vision

Got a new boy call me Masterpiece

Van Gogh, Monet, painted like Matisse.”

ETHAN not only are you a ‘masterpiece,’ but so is “Single in the Club”.

2. Billie Eilish, “LUNCH”

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT // Darkroom / Interscope // 2024

Billie Eilish, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT [📷: Darkroom / Interscope]“I could eat that girl for lunch / Yeah, she dances on my tongue / Taste like she might be the one.” Academy and Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Billie Eilish is honest regarding attraction and sexuality in her song, “LUNCH”. “I’m interested in more than just bein’ your friend,” she adds in the bridge of the second track from HIT ME HARD AND SOFT.  An authentic, honest, and personal track, Eilish embraces her queerness. Early on, Eilish is transparent about having a relationship with a woman. She adds in the centerpiece, the chorus, “It’s a craving, not a crush.” The lyric legitimizes her desire – it’s no fluke.

In the verses, she ‘opens up’ about her feelings about this girl. All the while, she maintains the lunch metaphor.  “Baby, I think you were made for me / Somebody write down the recipe,” she sings in the first verse, adding, “Been tryin’ hard not to overeat / You’re just so sweet.” Things progress, with Eilish offering to help this girl ‘take off her clothes,’ desiring to “get her off.” In the second verse, she’s impressed with her beautiful looks, complimenting her skin.  She cleverly concludes the verse by singing, “She’s the headlights, I’m the deer.” Eilish allows herself to be vulnerable. Navigating sexuality is difficult. With her amazing, distinct voice, and the stellar production (FINNEAS), Eilish conveys her truth, masking nothing.

3. David Archuleta, “Hell Together”

“Hell Together” // Archie Music // 2024

David Archuleta, Hell Together [📷: Archie Music]“Bow your head, don’t be bold / You’ll survive by doin’ what you’re told.”  Thought-provoking lyrics that David Archuleta sings in the first verse of “Hell Together”. Archuleta experienced big life changes: coming out and leaving the Mormon church.  The opening lyrics are troubling signaling the infamous notion of praying the gay away.  The lyrics convey the attitude that some religions, religious institutions, and people of faith have toward non-heterosexuals. Archie continues singing beautifully and sincerely, “Said love is earned and we can’t choose / But the more you grow, you know the truth.” He penned this stirring, vulnerable ballad with Sam DeRosa, Ryan Nealon, and producer, Jordan Sherman. After David realizes how the myopic views of the church are, and the effect they’ve had on him, he’s concerned about disappointing his mom. That is where the most touching moment of occurs – the chorus:

“‘If I have to live without you

I don’t wanna live forever in someone else’s heaven

So let ‘em close the gates

Oh, if they don’t like the way you’re made, then they’re not any better

If Paradise is pressure, oh

We’ll go to hell together.”

🥹 The ultimate allyship – blood! The second verse expands on it: “You and me, that’s all we need / Blood is thicker than the pages that they read.” On the bridge, Archuleta regrets not breaking from the church before now. “Hell Together” brilliantly captures the struggles faced by many in the LGBTQ+ community.

4. Tinashe, “Nasty”

“Nasty” // Tinashe Music Inc. / Nice Life Recording Company // 2024

Tinashe, Nasty [📷: Tinashe Music Inc. / Nice Life Recording Company]“Is somebody gonna match my freak?” Now that IS the question, Tinashe.  She follows up with, “Is somebody gonna match my nasty?” The contemporary R&B singer has a knack for delivering sexy songs. Honestly, who doesn’t enjoy a good sex song? “Nasty” is Tinashe doing what she does best – S-E-X-Y! She says it best in the intro: “I’ve been a nasty girl, nasty.” Rick Reed and Zack Sekoff produced the record with sexy, top-notch results – a sleek, often minimalist instrumental. Besides asking who’s gonna match her freak in the first verse, she asserts, “Pillow talking got my throat raspy.” Oh, snap 🫰! She follows the verse with the refrain, where the quality of the sex is the draw.  “If you keep up with me / I’ll keep on coming back,” she sings, adding, “Cause it feels like heaven / When it hurts so bad.” She keeps the same energy in verse two. “Nasty” lacks depth but thrives on sex. Tinashe sings well, brings mad energy, and titillates the hell out of the listener.

    5. Chris Housman, “Guilty As Sin”

    Blueneck // Chris Housman // 2024

Chris Housman, Blueneck [📷: Chris Housman]“Tried to fight it / To deny it / But every single night it’s the same desire, same damn fire.” Chris Housman understands it simply CAN’T be prayed away.  “Knew it was you the moment I felt this, baby, I’m helpless.” Housman is talking about resisting a guy. The gay country musician shouldn’t have to resist. In the marvelous ballad, “Guilty As Sin”, the fifth track from Blueneck, he is living his truth. “I’m done pretending / Cut the tension / Ain’t no use in us acting like, this ain’t right.” Agreed, Chris. He’s on fire from start to finish. His vocals are stunning.  He sounds honest and sincere regarding his sexuality, adding in the second verse, “I need your body / Heavy on me / I’m always falling back to your gravity, it’s pulling me.”  Aww! The accompaniment is country to the nth degree, and it sounds natural and fitting.  Country music isn’t known as the most inclusive genre but more and more, artists are expanding and pushing the boundaries.  The centerpiece of this thoughtful song that EVERYBODY needs to hear is the chorus:

    “I gave it my best

    But this halo don’t fit

If I had to spend forever in heaven without you might as well be in hell

    My verdict is in

Cause baby if loving you is wrong

    Then I’m guilty as sin.”

Love is love 🏳️‍🌈, baby! “Guilty As Sin” is a heavenly and moving, must-hear country ballad from Chris Housman.

    6. Charlotte Day Wilson, “Canopy”

Cyan Blue // Stone Woman Music / XL Recordings Ltd // 2024

Charlotte Day Wilson, Cyan Blue [📷: Stone Woman Music / XL Recordings Ltd]“You pick a fight, I keep it light / No one stays friends with you.” That sounds sus, Charlotte Day Wilson! The Juno-nominated, Canadian R&B singer/songwriter unveiled “Canopy” in advance of her second studio album, Cyan Blue.  She penned “Canopy” alongside Amy Allen and produced it with Jack Ro with top-notch results. In the verse, she sings, “I’m done, my towel tossed / And I can’t be tapered off.” The songwriting is strong. Following the verse, the chorus arrives in its tuneful glory. “It’s like a canopy, all that hate / And I’m above it, can’t live that way,” Day Wilson asserts, continuing, “I know I’m covered and can’t be changed / You’re the only one in your way.” She possesses a marvelous instrument, with an utterly sublime tone. Furthermore, with vocal layers coming into the mix specifically during the chorus, “Canopy” reaches the highest of heights.  Before the chorus, the accompaniment was simple – rhythm guitar.  Post-chorus, in the bridge, the backdrop fills out anchored by a sick beat (“You get what you give into / It’s not the world verse you…”).  Notably, there is a change of pace during the outro, with guitar accompaniment supplanted with legato piano.  Reflective, she asks, “What does it say about me? / I keep on fallin’ for it / I’m under your canopy / What does it say about me?”  On this terrific “look through the unjaded eyes of my younger self”, Day Wilson delivers the goods.

    God Said No // Warner // 2024

Omar Apollo, God Said No [📷: Warner]“And I don’t see you anymore, but the words you left me are always in my ears / Always in my tears.” Those pesky matters of the heart have affected our dear, gifted, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Omar Apollo“Dispose of Me” is the second single from his deeply personal, sophomore album, God Said No. It was written by Apollo, Billy Walsh, Oscar Santander, and Blake Slatkin. It was produced by Santander, Slatkin, and Teo Halm. Like most Omar Apollo songs, “Dispose of Me” is giving sheer musical excellence. The production of “Dispose of Me” is subtle and tastefully executed. Furthermore, the accompanying instrumental is smooth and soulful. The guitars stand out, sounding awesome without being overt or forcing things.  The backdrop is the perfect fuel for Omar who shines with his gorgeous, nuanced vocals from the beginning. He’s authentic and honest in his performance. Thematically, he recalls a past love: “You’re a gentleness my body just won’t forget / You’re a handprint on my heart I just can’t possess.” Aww. He doesn’t want to let it go, commandingly singing in the second verse, “Can we try again? / You know we had potential.” The section to beat is the chorus which features a tuneful melody and memorable lyrics:

    “It doesn’t matter if it’s twenty-five years, twenty-five months

It doesn’t matter if it’s twenty-five days, it was real love

    We got too much history

So, don’t just dispose of me…”

Notably, Apollo’s falsetto during the chorus only ups the ante of this fabulous song.  “Dispose of Me” marks “another one,” aka, another hit, from the handsome, talented singer/songwriter.

Kim Petras, Slut Pop Miami [📷: Amigo / Republic]“G-g-g-gag on it / Sucky suck, eat it up / Get a rush, make ya bust.” It doesn’t require deep analysis to understand what Grammy-winning pop artist Kim Petras is getting at on “Gag on It”. The second track from her 2024 album, Slut Pop Miami, is fully invested in sex positivity. She adds, naughtily in the chorus of this brief, steamy, dance-pop number, “Take it deep, make it skeet / On your knees, make you weep.” Wow 😮! This ‘deep’ cut was penned by Petras alongside Aaron Joseph, Ryan OG, Rocco Did It Again!, lil aaron, and producer, Dr. Luke.  Dr. Luke puts in serious work behind the boards, giving her an energetic backdrop to fuel the lust. The chorus is the centerpiece, but there’s also a verse and pre-chorus that appears post-verse where Petras unleashes her naughtiness.  In the verse, she asserts, “I wanna hear that sound when you gag, OD / Push it through your lips, swallow it real deep…” In the pre-chorus, she keeps it 100, sexually: “Uh, bitch, gag on it / I’ma hit it raw, no bag on it.” On the bold “Gag on It”, Petras said what she said.

    9. Ben Platt, “Andrew”

    Honeymind // Interscope // 2024

Ben Platt, Honeymind [📷: Interscope]“His hair falls in cool careless waves without tryin’ / Goes days without cryin’ / But still treats me kind.” Oh, “Andrew”! The talented Ben Platt penned the single/third track from his third studio album, Honeymind, alongside Alex Hope. Hope produced the four-minute gem with Dave Cobb.  The sound is celestial, giving off folk-pop vibes with instrumentation comprised of guitar, keys, bass, drums, and layered vocals. Platt delivers gorgeous vocals. He sings expressively, with ease, never forcing things.  The inspiration is a boy he had a crush on.  The songwriting superbly captures Platt’s feelings for him.  In the second verse, he sings, “He floats through the air unaware of the damage / A hard right of passage for soft-hearted boys.” The pen game is awesome! See the pre-chorus for more excellence: “One look in his eyes and I’m gone / Helplessly dumb / My senses go numb / My brain is on fire / They say wanting someone is supposed to be fun / That’s because they never loved an Andrew.” The perspective will resonate with many in the LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 community, crushing on someone impossible to attain. See the EVERYTHING chorus for clarity:

“Honey, I know there’s no one to blame

    But honestly, damn you

It’s just a cruel joke that chemicals play

You don’t wanna kiss me, ‘cause I’m not at all

Like the girls in the posters that hang on your wall

What a time-wasting heartbreak to fall

    For an Andrew.”

Notably, the final chorus has a slight variation, but the effect is the same.  All told, “Andrew” is a distinct, singer/songwriter pop record by Platt. He deserves plenty of love for this authentic, superbly penned and performed number.

serpentwithfeet, GRIP [📷: Secretly Canadian]“I’m your shelter.” That’s what serpentwithfeet (Josiah Wise) proclaims on “Safe Word”, the second single from his 2024 album, GRIP. Wise is feeling frisky, surprising given the title of the song. Besides being the shelter for his partner, he is also “the safe word.” Wise penned this sub-three-minute, sensual joint, while I Like That produces.  I Like That gives the Baltimore musician a fine backdrop, characterized by the tasteful use of guitar and a sweet groove. Of course, it is serpentwithfeet that steals the show on “Safe Word.” Wise’s vocals are stunning; his falsetto is to die for.  The tone and approach on this contemporary /alternative R&B record is fitting.  Notably, the single cover art features Wise locking lips with his boyfriend.  Before even listening, it’s hinted that safeness hits a bit different.  “A penny saved might be a penny earned / But if you save that freaky shit for later, you’ll never learn,” Wise sings, serving up a slight variation in the next two lines.  “Safe Word” encompasses love, but also exhibits explicit passion: “Choke me now, fuck me now / Upload that dick into the cloud / I’m insatiable, make it conversational /… Oh, by the way, my nigga’s carryin’ a log.” Whoa! Ooh-la-la! “Safe Word” is not safe for work, but it’s safe to say that it is a vibe – a sexual vibe – from the onset.

ETHAN, DIVINE INTERVENTION (EP) [📷: ETHAN]“Pull an all-nighter / Ain’t ‘bout to save it for later / We on that puppy love time / Clean up then we back on site.” Oh, shit! It’s easy to like “Like It”.  ETHAN (Ethan Choryin Luo) adds in this sexy single from DIVINE INTERVENTION, “Drunk on that punch boy / Taste it on your tongue boy, hey.” He penned this naughty gem alongside Maribelle and Alex the Astronaut. Vetta Borne produced this sensational queer sex song. ETHAN sounds amazing – that tone, those sickening runs – as well as amazingly titillating, giving the listeners ‘something they can feel.’ “Make it rain, boy / The way you pour that strawberry chocolate, yuh / You know it fill me up,” he sings, naughtily.

In the bridge, the passion is elevated:

    “Ready now, lay me down

    Turn it around

Switch it up, me on top

    Boy turn me out

Just the right type of dangerous

    Don’t talk, savor it.”

Damn! Is hooking up between them becoming more? It’s a concern, as he emphasizes, “I just need a weekend lover, had too many weak ass lovers,” and in the chorus, declares (1) “Don’t try to make it, make it something it’s not,” and (2) “Don’t wanna get together, if it won’t last forever.” Still, whatever this thing is between them, especially in one of the sexiest music videos you’ll ever see, it’s piping hot! The steamy “Like It” is the sugar honey iced tea.

The openly gay British synthpop artist composed “Dizzy” with producer Danny Harle.  Harle gives Olly a sleek backdrop – ample fuel for his fire! “Dizzy” represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

The song is simple thematically.  Boy likes boy and boy wants to spend time loving on said boy. “Beautiful gardens, eternal flowers,” Alexander sings in the first verse, continuing, “You know the way, so take me there.” In the second, he asserts, “Pulling me close, I feel a stillness in the air / Time has frozen, all memories lost.” Why? Love, that’s why! The chorus is the section to beat as he seeks a never-ending moment of L-O-V-E (“Will you take my hand and spin me / ‘Round and ‘round until the moment never ends?” Throughout, he sings angelically, matching the beauty of the love – those sweet, sweet kisses! A song best experienced rather than explained, “Dizzy” is a surefire, pop bop that easily makes you beam with pride 🏳️‍🌈.

The rapper is unapologetic in his 2024 single, “Cum Pirate”.  The name suggests the experience is an adult experience… Quartz isn’t subtle. He is bold and doesn’t hold back or suppress his sexuality.  “I give him good brain ‘til he going dumb,” he continues spitting on the chorus, adding, he’ll “gag on it if he is hung.” Size matters in this case 🍆! Bryce isn’t the only thing ‘rough around the edges’ on “Cum Pirate.” The production is noisy and unrefined, fitting for the X-rated experience. Quartz clarifies he wants “all of his cum.” In other words, he swallows! Why? He is a cum pirate who is on a cum diet… Yeah… Can you guess what else the bodily fluid does for him? It gets him excited… Also, Quartz mentions his role (top) and he’s “a young cub with a big prick.” Ooh-wee! Based upon forthcoming lyrics, Bryce is likely vers… Anyways, when it comes to sex, he’s not a quiet dude! “I like it loud, baby, give me that feedback / I want that cum, Daddy, take a seat and lean back.” Ooh, Bryce, you are so nasty! Lauv, Potential [📷: Lauv / AWAL Recordings America, Inc.]Lauv (Ari Leff) has experienced changes regarding his sexual orientation. sexually. “Potential” addresses his sexuality without explicitly stating it. To his friend, in the first verse, he admits, “Never told you why / Always held inside / No more tears to cry / I’m not afraid, I gotta say / Oh, damn, I think we got potential.” Leff penned “Potential” alongside Michael Pollack, Madison Love, Kii Kinsella, Castle, Tenroc (Jason Cornet), and producers Ojivolta (Mark Williams and Raul Cubina) and Twisco (Jarrod Morgan).  On “Potential,” Lauv no longer hides or masks who he is.  He embraces it and shares his feelings with someone of the same sex.  The second verse reveals genuine emotions regarding his revelations (“Had a heart attack / When I told you that / That I loved you back”). The chorus is the centerpiece: “Like damn, I know we could be special / I’ll sell you on the vision, but this heart is not for rental…”  The bridge shows more transparency from Leff without crossing any lines: “With a body like that, body like that / I just can’t keep my hands to myself.” Furthering this coming out narrative, and potential budding romance is a sweet music video, by far his queerest yet.  Vocally, he’s true to himself, soundly and convincingly selling the lyrics and feelings.  The melodies are sweet and the production sleek.  Hearing Leff embrace his truth is the song’s biggest triumph.

In the second verse, he sings, “I don’t know how we ended up here / But I wish we didn’t, I wish things were different.” In addition to top-notch vocals and thoughtful songwriting, the production is solid – a country backdrop fresh enough to win over some pop listeners. “Leave This All Behind” marks another instance where Hill isn’t shy about Dixon being gay. The chorus is the crème de la crème:

“I need a new boyfriend, that ain’t like you

One that treats me like a queen, no, that ain’t hard to do

Sick of the bullshit, you’re putting me through

But I don’t know how to leave, I don’t know what to do

So, I just, cry some more ‘til you walk in through the front door

The songwriting earns high marks, courtesy of Cork and Martin Luke Brown.  Driving the narrative is those pesky matters of the heart. “You were kind, and I was young, how was I supposed to know? / I thought I was a fool to let you go,” Benedict sings in the first verse, later adding, “You were cruel, manipulating, every move we made / And I took it for love, it’s such a shame / Now I feel like a fool over again.” Love will make you do some stuff.  Cork arrives at his senses, something captured superbly.  Beyond the lyrics, the melodies are tuneful in the verses and the chorus.  The instrumental also earns high marks, particularly the warmth of the keys – that organ is epic! Cork produces alongside HOOST, yielding top-notch results.  Cork ‘puts his foot’ into “Reasons I Loved You (I Can’t Think of One)”. Apologies for his love pain, but many thanks for turning such pain into music that makes me/us beam with pride!

    17. Tsatsamis, “Dive In”

    Our Shame (EP) // Tsatsamis // 2024

Tsatsamis, Our Shame [📷: Tsatsamis]“Don’t you wanna come and get a taste (dive into) / You won’t ever feel the same (dive into).” Hell yes! The temptation, Tsatsamis, is lit 🔥 – piping hot! The heart wants what it wants, as does the body 🤭 😮‍💨 😈. “Dive In”, the stellar opening track from the London-based musician’s 2024 album, Our Shame, proves it is hard to yield against who you are, how you feel, and what you desire.

“Won’t you come dive in deep

Take this shame and wash it clean

    It’s not what you think

    It’s everything

And I’m right here with you

Won’t you come dive in deep.”

Tsatsamis covers lots of ground on “Dive In.” The handsome, talented musician, who wrote, produced, and performed this track, embraces sexuality. He rids of shame, something that many queer individuals have experienced throughout their lives.  In the second verse, he’s convincing ‘him’ to lean in and dive in: “And by the way / Fuck what she says / You know how this makes you feel.” The question is, who is she? Thought-provoking, Tsatsamis. Is he with her but wants to be with him? Is a different ‘she,’ like mom, discouraging the ‘lifestyle’ as many heterosexual folks put it? Regardless, Tsatsamis puts all the hang-ups and shame behind him over a badass backdrop and dives TF in. “Take from me what you desire / All your fears won’t reach this high,” he sings in the bridge, continuing, “I’ll lose my mind / I’ll fuck my pride / I love my mind / I’ll lose my mind, oh.” “Dive In” by Tsatsamis = the sugar honey iced tea.

Binoy, Villain Arc [📷: Binoy Zachariah Music]“Got the bad taste of heartache in my mouth / Want to act out / I look so good, wow.” WOW, indeed! Binoy (Binoy Zachariah) makes sickening music, PERIOD. Born and raised in Kenya, and embracing his Indian roots, Zachariah’s brand of pop has no boundaries. On “Villain Arc” his ambition and innovative musical spirit shine bright as a beacon. What makes it special? The sound and production (Binoy) play a sizable role.  The synths sound mean, embracing an international flavor. The beat bangs. Beyond the instrumental, the vocals are unique too. Binoy gives us a mix of traditional and pitch-shifted vocals. A nonstandard pop track, its nonconformity is part of its charm! Binoy is aggressive throughout embracing a villainous arc. He flexes despite inopportune happenings, particularly concerning matters of the heart. He’s confident AF (“Bitch, I move like art, Rakakaka / In my villain arc / I am at one with my body”), profane, violent and evil.  “Bang, bang, bang / Three white twinks in a ditch / I am that bitch / Itching for violence,” he asserts during the production switch, later adding, “And I don’t give a / And I don’t give a fuck.” Ooh-wee! Those white twinks must have rubbed him the wrong way! Zachariah penned the fierce, spirited “Villain Arc” alongside Arthur Besna. This Kenyan, LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 standout slays!

St. Vincent, All Born Screaming [📷: Total Pleasure]“On the street, I’m a king-sized killer / I can make you come.” From the jump, “Broken Man” is an alluring gem from St. Vincent (Annie Clark) – ear-catching to the nth degree! The song is the promo single from her seventh album, the self-produced All Born Screaming. St. Vincent ‘brings it’ on this high-energy, ear-catching tour de force. The instrumental is unique – distinct, intriguing, and minimal.  This minimalist sound is hypnotic, serving as the perfect accompaniment to her. Clark delivers colorful, distinct vocals atop the backdrop.  She brings ample attitude and personality to the table.  “Hey, what are you looking at? / Who the hell do you think I am?” she asks in the memorable chorus, adding, “Like you’ve never seen a broken man.” Woo! After establishing the minimalism in the opening verse, “Broken Man” gets fuller instrumentation in the second, led by the lyrics, “Lover, nail yourself right to me / If you go, I won’t be well…” That’s a moment in itself.  Notably, boisterous, distorted guitars (and synths) kick some serious ass… AND TAKE NAMES! By the conclusion of “Broken Man,” it has transformed into this epic, hard-rocking alternative cut bearing some industrial influence.  St. Vincent is distinct.  She flexes her uniqueness on “Broken Man”.

Is he diabetic since his sugar is low? He shouldn’t play around with low blood sugar, so I’m giving the pop singer/songwriter the side-eye with that fuck the diagnosis lyric… He adds some context though:  “It’s an emergency, the doctor’s calling me / He tells me that I need / To get some more, a taste of your…” wait for it – “Vitamin D”! Per the Mayo Clinic, ‘Vitamin D is a nutrient your body needs for building and maintaining healthy bones.’ The Vitamin D Markinson needs is phallic – he needs to get some! He sings in the chorus, “Vitamin D, come on and give it to me / I know what my body needs / I’ll get down on my knees and savor all your…”  Ooh-wee! Throughout this fun record, he excels in delivering naughty, innuendo-laden lyrics. The crown jewel is the chorus, where the listener gathers his needs are purely sexual.  During the verses, the production is ‘seedy sounding,’ matching the naughty nature of the lyrics. The backdrop grows robust with a pounding beat and sharp synths in the chorus. “Vitamin D” is F-U-N!

Self-pleasure! Woo! Lenfair is being honest about how this person makes him feel. He makes him feel… horny 🍆 💦.  Lenfair penned “Candyshop,” producing it with Elisio Freitas.  While the titillating lyrics are primarily responsible for the ear candy, the backdrop provides a lift too – the gooey synths sound like candy… The chorus is a surefire vibe, filled with innuendo.  “Take me to the candy shop / How many licks it takes? / Wanna taste your love / Come on and break me off,” Lenfair sings, adding, “You’re hitting it right on / Gimme all you got / ‘Cause I can’t get enough.” The horniness is through the roof.  And it doesn’t stop there, particularly when Erik encourages them to “Suck it like a Push Pop.” Or, is he the one participating in that act? Lenfair describes “Candyshop” as the ‘sweetest song I’ve ever written about sucking cock, fingerbangin and creampie :).’ Woo! His preferences are freaky: “I like it glazed up / I like it like a creampie.” Oh, snap 🫰! When tweeting about his single, he asserts, ‘I’m ready to Ride 🍑,’ adding, ‘I hope you love my new power bottom anthem.’ Power bottom, huh 🍆 🍑 😈?  Lyrics and playful vocals by Brett make “Ride” a surefire vibe.  It begins with pleasure-filled, breathy vocals in the intro (“Yeah… you like that”).  That’s the perfect preface for musical and physical pleasure. From there, he gets sassy, supported by an energetic, electric backdrop with a rhythmic beat. “I’m gonna show you all that I can do / I’m gonna make all your dreams come true / I’m gonna give it to you / Gonna show you what this boy can do, do, do.” Brett is confident that the ‘S Meets E and then they X’ is potent – #GIVING! Eventually, it leads to the ride and the explosion 💦 😈. Brett keeps things freaky, with the gimmicky, “L-l-l-love me right / Go, go, go all night,” vowing to “Bounce, bounce, bounce, all night.” The “Ride” is a short one – sub-two minutes – but Grant Brett gets the job done 😉! From the beginning, the listener is blessed with disco and dance-pop vibes.  The beat is sick. The bass line is fat, providing a mighty anchor.  The production is marvelous – the perfect fuel for a sex song. Darin keeps things classy. Still, ‘it’s going down’ beyond the dance floor! The tuneful chorus is one of the biggest selling points:

“I’m falling in love, got me feeling electric

Just can’t get enough, I will never forget this

‘Cause the way you got me now, my head is in the clouds

    I’m never coming down

Yeah, the way I’m falling in love got me feeling electric.”

Darin brings the heat vocally –  autopilot, baby! In the second verse, the ‘dancing’ becomes dirtier, with body synchronization (😮‍💨) and T-O-U-C-H (🥵).  On the bridge, with slight contrast, Zanyar encourages them to “Go until the morning.” Darin makes us all hot and bothered on “Electric” which is sexy to the nth degree.

The LGBTQ pop musician penned “Ego Talking” alongside Julia Michaels, Madison Love, and producers Jennifer Decliveo and Pete Nappi. Matters of the heart are firmly in play. This post-breakup record thrives lyrically and thematically. On one hand, FLETCHER encourages her ex to have happiness with someone else. “So, go, do it all, have the time of your life / And kiss every girl, let ‘em all stay the night.” It’s the right thing to do, right? Right. The gender of her ex isn’t specified. It doesn’t matter either, as this sentiment is relatable to anybody regardless of sexual orientation. More compelling is FLETCHER’s ego, which leads her to believe her ex will NEVER do better than she did with her.

“Oh-oh, you’ll never fuck somebody hotter, right?

    Oh-oh-oh-oh

Hope my lips haunt you for life

Hearin’ my name twists the knife

    Hopin’ you stay brokenhearted

Well, the first verse of “SECOND MINUTE HOUR”, the opener from SEX WITH MYSELF (😳) continues with Schulman leaning closer, touching his tattoos (😮‍💨), and despite leaving his shit, he says, “fuck it, oh well / I think you’re trouble but I’m hoping that you prove me RIGHT.” Oh, the temptation! Schulman penned “SECOND MINUTE HOUR” with Alex Borel, Colin Foote, and Perrin Xthona. He produced it with Foote and Borel. The dance-pop vibes are turned up. It sports a danceable beat, sick synths, and an electronic palette.  The production is sleek. As radiant as the clubby backdrop sounds, the star of the show is JORDY who compels with smooth, sexy vocals.  Those vocals include ripe falsetto as well as playful, spoken word lyrics.  It’s fitting that the sexiest lyrics of the song are spoken coolly despite the fact they make us sweat 😓!

“Want you to love me for a second

    For a minute, maybe hours

Touch my body like you mean it

Come and meet me in the shower

Got me rolling back my eyes

    Like it’s a superpower

You can have me if you wanna stay another

    Second minute hour.”

Phew 😮‍💨! The melodies are sweet in the verses while the lyrics are carefree, fun, and lustful.  A prime example: “Show me the parts of your body only your mama knows / I never do this, but I might let you take control.”  JORDY, you’re a naughty, naughty boy, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.  “SECOND MINUTE HOUR” is a perfect, arousing dance-pop cut.

Unfortunately, love is often NOT that simple.  The Toronto musician delivers a relatable, well-rounded pop song with “Love Me Just a Little” penned with Suzie Buist. The talented Canadian produced it alongside Olle Romo. The sound is a huge selling point.  The groove sho’ nuff grooves early on, while those picturesque keys are everything. Conlin has a fantastic backdrop to sing over and sing he does! His vocals are strong, characterized by an authentic and expressive performance. “Love Me Just a Little” is relatable, thanks to not only Conlin’s vocal performance but also, the love-driven lyrics.  “Always telling me how I’m so fine, say anything to get that invite / Know you’re gonna waste my time,” he sings in the first verse, adding in the second, “Lonely nights, I wanna give in / Someone touching my skin / But I been there, and it doesn’t make sense, link up just to have it all end / Never hear from them again.” Nobody likes a ghost 👻! The melodies are tuneful throughout, especially in the chorus:

“Oh my god, I’m bleeding every single feeling out

    Love me just a little

No one wants to slow dance, what happened to romance?

Love me just a little, just a little right now.”

The ending of the record is particularly grand, given Conlin’s ad-libs and vocal riffs, as well as the level of energy. All told, John Conlin brings the heat on “Love Me Just a Little”.

     “His Car” // Future x MT13 // 2024

Matt Terry, His Car [📷: Future x MT13]“Told your family about me, I never did.” Uh-oh! Sounds like a case of fear, secrecy, and internalized homophobia from Matt Terry.  He admits, at the end of the first verse, “Now all I see in that mirror, a hypocrite.” Why? Throughout “His Car”, he expresses the mistakes he made in his first same-sex relationship.  Terry had a good man and he ‘did him wrong’ by not allowing himself to be true – live openly as a gay man without reservations. Matt got in his own way…  He expounds more in the second verse, asserting, “Out in the streets I wouldn’t hold your hand / Oh why, I was way too young to understand.” The experience Terry sings about is sad, but it also isn’t far-fetched for members of the LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 community. Shame is huge in the community.  Sadly, shame can derail something meaningful and promising. Same-sex relationships can be challenging for various reasons.  If you are fortunate enough to find that special someone, it can be devastating if you let the opportunity for something great pass. In the thoughtful, utterly sincere chorus, he apologizes, even though he knows it’s far too late:

“I used to kiss him in the back of his car

Hiding from the world who we are

I’m sorry for every single lie

I told him you should go and bury your heart

My parents won’t ever know about us

I keep wishing that I could go back in time

    To apologize

    To apologize.”

“His Car” is a gem.  Terry and producer Xoro composed an authentic three-minute ballad.  Terry sings beautifully with the utmost sincerity.  The theme is relatable and also heartbreaking.  Why can’t we be free to live our lives without complications?

UGLY CRIER (DELUXE) // Bentley Robles Music // 2024

Bentley Robles, UGLY CRIER (DELUXE) [📷: Bentley Robles Music]Matters of the heart can fuck you up, badly, particularly at the hands of a fuckboy. The term, albeit vulgar, elicits a worthwhile conversation regarding dating, however. In the case of fearless pop artist Bentley Robles (Bruno Pazzi Robles), an UGLY CRIER, love, or the illusion of love, has done a number on him, courtesy of fuckboys.  “My friends always say that I ruin new things cause of you,” he sings in the first verse of “GOD IS A FUCKBOY”, adding, “Spend all my time blaming myself / But I don’t really think it’s my fault / It’s just that I’m built like this / I’m clinically a romantic guy.” Fair enough. So, who’s to blame for you “cry-ing about boys that don’t deserve it?” The ultimate fuckboy – God, apparently 🫢. In the second track of UGLY CRIER (Deluxe), Robles has an epiphany – one considered blasphemous by some!

“I never thought much about him before this

But in this moment on one thing, I’m focused

If God led me straight to you

Then God must be a fuckboy too.”

Robles is boldly honest, which makes him captivating as a musical artist.  It doesn’t stop there. He adds, “I wish that someone could see / That the big guy is picking on me / Wish I could just send him a text like / ‘Daddy, just give it a rest’.” There’s also, “And they say, I can do all things in God but / He’s doing a really bad job, yeah / I don’t know why / He spends his time / Sending me so many bad guys.” Over the exuberant, synth-driven production (FLORIO), Robles states that He (aka God) “is a fuckboy” repeating it numerous times.  Associating God with fuckery take some stones. Robles, all told, delivers an ear-catching, PRIDE beaming, pop song.

Given the Ayesha Erotica sample in the intro (“Spread That Puss”), the nearly three-and-a-half-minute song is unapologetic from the beginning.  “Alter Ego” was written by Doechii, JT, Ayesha Erotica, and Zach Witness. Witness and Doechii produced the track incorporating dance, pop, and rap cues.  There are strong, compelling flows by Doechii and JT in their respective verses. “Fuck that hoe, fuck that bitch / It’s fuck that hoe ‘til the condom slip,” Doechii spits, adding, “Who the fuck y’all hoes think run this shit? / Miss she/her/black vagina.” In the second verse, JT asserts she’s “Unfazed, unbothered / Unfuckwitable bitch, why bother? I’m that bitch, I’m that bitch / I’m that bitch and you bitches ain’t on shit.” Wow! Confidence is through the roof. The pitched chorus following both verses is a surefire vibe – part of the charm of “Alter Ego.”

    “Nah, nah, nah-nah, nah

These hoes ain’t phasin’ me, phasin’ me

    Nah-nah, nah-nah-nah-boo-boo

Bitch, you dead to me, dead to me, rah.”

The bridge, also sung, is one of the surprises of “Alter Ego”.  It easily distinguishes itself from the verses and chorus (“That’s just my alternate, that’s just my alternate / That’s just my ego, that’s just my alternate”). Ultimately, Doechii and JT bring the heat.

Prior to that assertion, in his single, “SPRING BREAK”,  the handsome, talented pop artist makes it clear, “All roads are leading to me at the start.” What is clear from the start of “Spring Break” is that it is a surefire vibe that not only ushers in the spring – beachy, poolside vibe – but also hints at the possibilities for some sweet S meets E and then they X. AVERY wrote and produced this groovy, carefree spring gem. Dancing is highly encouraged! However, it’s more than dancing that’s encouraged! Bissell penned this sexy record and produced it alongside Moises Zulaica. The awesome sounds that grace “Good Boy” include rhythmic, scintillating synths, pummeling drums (including sweet drum runs), and electrifying guitars. EVERYTHING! If you had to pinpoint one overall thing, however, it is the innovative spirit. “b i g f e e l i n g s” is superbly written (Smith, Zach Tenorio, and Chris Greatti), the lyrics are honest (“I know I’m not fine / But yes, I say I’m fine”), and the vocal delivery is epic.  WILLOW sounds awesome singing alone, as well as when her vocals are harmonized.  Her performance is playful and, most impressively, highly skilled.  Jazz is not an easy genre to perform, yet she seems to do so with ease.  The chorus is superb as she expresses those ‘big feelings.’ Still, the bridge is the section to beat.  “I know I have, I know you have problems,” she sings, against badass, dissonant piano. The descending melodic line at the end of the bridge on the word problems is genius. “b i g f e e l i n g s” is a breath of fresh air – it goes against the grain and that is part of its charm. Furthermore, the musicianship is top-notch. WILLOW taps into something special.

He adds in his single, “TWINK”, “The burning tip resting on my lip as you suck in what you want.” Hmm, something tells me that Nethersole is thinking about a different sort of tip… “TWINK” is sexy, suggestive, and G-A-Y 🏳️‍🌈! Nethersole makes it steamy with his vocal delivery while the production (bloomz) screams S-E-X.  So, where does the twink come into play? The chorus, my dears!

    “Breathe me in like nicotine

Tell me I’m all you need

I’m all yours on all fours

Show me what it means to be your perfect little twink

    Your perfect little twink.”

Those lyrics speak volumes.  Nethersole paints himself, or his character as submissive. He is emotional, but sexually, he wants to be dominated by his partner. Is he a bottom? It seems likely, particularly with the emphasis on little aka the size of a twink and little spoon.  There continues to be a mix of emotional and physical, as Tom wants him to think about him, but also wants them to grind and 69. “TWINK” plays superbly as part of the LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 soundtrack and as a sexy pop bop.

    34. Asbjørn, “He’s Dancing So Well (I’m Better)”

    He’s Dancing So Well (I’m Better)” // Body of Work // 2024

Asbjørn, He's Dancing So Well (I'm Better) [📷: Body of Work]“I’m keeping the secret that our bodies hold,” Danish pop singer/songwriter Asbjørn (Asbjørn Toftdahl Terkelsen) asserts on He’s Dancing So Well (I’m Better).  Ooh-la-la, so covert of you, Asbjørn!  It should be noted, however, that the handsome and talented musician is no longer in a relationship with this nameless man.  “I heard you found someone else, oh / Now you’re spinning around in a new pair of arms.” Yep, they are no longer an item.  What is Terkelsen’s response to his ex, who has a new beau? “And I will dance with myself forever / He never needs to know / He’s dancing so well but I’m better.” Word.

Asbjørn captures varying emotions.  He knows he is the better boyfriend – he offers more than the new partner.  To some extent, that gives him satisfaction.  By the end of the record, he sings, “Don’t you tell him / As long as we keep it between you and I / He’s so good / I’m better.” Absolutely! Naturally, Terkelsen is bothered by the demise of their union and struggles with letting go. His ex, on the other hand, is with someone else.  “His hand in the strobe, oh / Bodies get closer but painfully slow,” he sings, adding, “I’m spinning out of control, oh / Mirror his movement till I can go home.” Is there a resolution for him in this alluring LGBTQ+ pop joint? Not necessarily but his reaction is relatable.  Do you know what else makes us beam with Pride 🏳️‍🌈 regarding He’s Dancing So Well (I’m Better)? The musicianship! Asbjørn sings beautifully with a voice readymade for pop.  The melodies are tuneful, matched up with those emotional and relatable lyrics.  The production (Terkelsen and Steffen Lundtoft) is the sugar honey iced tea. Dance on, Asbjørn!

Lynks, ABOMINATION [📷: Heavenly Recordings / [PIAS]]“I’ve got a confession (Yeah) / And I don’t think it’s likely to land me a place in Heaven.” Uh-oh, Lynks (he/she/they pronouns). What sin could damn the pop artist to hell? “Since age eleven /… I’ve been told I’m a heathen / So you best believe I’m on the guest list for the Armageddon.” Um, can you be more specific on “ABOMINATION” Lynks? “Only lowkey gimp that could make Sean Cody look like a Disney movie.” Yep, it’s sexuality! In this highlight from his 2024 LP, ABOMINATION, church and religion are not his friends.  “I walk in the room with the cross and the pews / And my skin burns up like a ginger in June.” Damn.  Ultimately, he’s “a godless fool, yeah, it’s pretty old news.” What isn’t old news is how much ass Lynks kicks on “ABOMINATION.” He wrote and produced the track, which thrives because of its electrifying rhymes and sick instrumental.  Set in a minor key, the devilishness and sinfulness are alive and well! The big takeaway is about how the LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 community finds themselves eternally damned and shunned by churches and religion. Lynks is unhappy with faith-based things, asserting, “It makes me wanna be unsacred.” A ‘holy shit!’ moment occurs when he criticizes God, asserting, “Oh, God, don’t You think it’s a bit hypocritical / You get to love all men,” later adding, “Well, goddamn, my God don’t wanna guard me no more / He said love thy neighbor, but only if they got the opposite genitals.” The British musician also cries foul beyond “Drivin’ evangelicals crazy,” perturbed when:

“Think of a teenager tryna make a blood donation

Turned away based on his orientation

Now every time I see the British Heart Foundation

I’m reminded that I’m an abomination

And my gay blood’s not fit for circulation

    Headed face-first straight to damnation

It’s why I try and be sacred (Amen).”

Lynks kills it on “ABOMINATION” which speaks to those who have felt alienated and made to feel less because of their sexual orientation.

There is no doubt that seeing 👀 him, you’ll be “Overstimulated”.  Not only is the Argentinian based in Sydney, Australia an R&B/pop singer, but he’s also a model. DUH! Without being able to decipher all or any of the lyrics of “Overstimulated,” it radiates sexual vibes.  Exhibit A: the cover art.  Manúk in briefs and one white crew sock 😍. Kornisuk penned “Overstimulated” alongside David Yaakov Goldberg.  The track was produced by MIGGY. Even without deciphering the lyrics of “Overstimulated,” it radiates sexual vibes. The midnight heat is generated from an electrifying groove.  This minor-key pop gem features a fabulous instrumental palette comprised of keys, synths, and guitar. The backdrop provides the perfect fuel for the fire for Manúk.  He delivers a sexy, nuanced brand of vocals that STIMULATES! During the verses, he sings in his rich, mid-register.  Beginning in the pre-chorus, he titillates with his ripe falsetto, which continues in the chorus. In the chorus, his falsetto sounds righteous – AMEN!  Further making us perspire are decadent ad-libs which are never too much yet piping hawt! “Overstimulated” is a sexy ass BOP 😮‍💨!

    STAGES // Austin Marquez // 2024

Austin Marquez, Stages [📷: Austin Marquez]“Save me, I’ve been looking for some safety / And I don’t know you yet, but maybe / Your touch could bring me back to life.” New York-based singer/songwriter Austin Marquez has a vision of love on “The One”. Initially, he’s backed by a colorful and cool instrumental, supporting his love endeavors.  The handsome, talented musician sings radiantly, serving up a calm, cool, and collected vocal. Marquez penned the highlight from his debut album, STAGES, alongside Carson Rammelt. The crème de la crème is the chorus which features memorable lyrics and a tuneful melody. During this section, the vocal arrangement is marvelous.  The chorus signals a shift from the cooler beginnings of the track to a heavier sound incorporating a punchy, danceable groove.

“I think that you could be the one

To take me off this broken road

I think that you could be the one

The fix that I’ve been waiting for

Got you in my sight and now I see paradise

You could be the one, you could be the one.”

Thematically, “The One” encompasses falling in love and being open to love. I love the repetition of the chorus towards the end, keeping the passion turned up.  Repetition of the word, paradise, and big sounds cap off “The One”, a marvelous single by Marquez.

On her 2024 single,  “Safe Word”, the rapper/singer shocks with the opening lyrics that can be perceived as controversial or problematic. In “Safe Word,” Candy does not honor a safe word in the traditional sense. She penned the song with JBACH (Jonathan Bach) with Jordan Palmer handling production duties.  The backdrop is utterly lit 🔥! Candy serves up ample personality. While her intentions are sketchy with that safe word, she delivers an entertaining, naughty song. The sex is through the roof as she says, “Rope, leather / Keep your body tethered to the bed / Make you sweat / Let’s get into some kinky shit.” The sex is not vanilla, something that the song title and noncompliance with the safe word indicates.  In the same verse, she adds, “Put me under like fentanyl / Fuck me ‘til I’m hysterical.” In the second verse, she keeps pushing boundaries, singing, “We don’t need to get romantic, daddy / I just want to get a little dirty / Eat me out from night to bright and early.” Woo! She finishes out the wild verse, singing, “If you do it right, I’ll let you hurt me / Fuck me like I’m begging you for mercy.” “Safe Word” is an edgy, risqué, club-ready record.  Regardless of how you perceive some of Candy’s lyrics, she’s sex-positive to the nth degree.

In the verses, she provides insight into her dark place.  “I was feeling so inadequate / Never been so out of it,” she sings in the first verse.  In the second, admittedly, “I know I have a tendency, melancholic tragedy / Always seems to follow me ‘round.” Bummer, bummer! Furthermore, “Sometimes I get bit by the dark / It spread into my heart, takes over me.” Despite it all, she adds, “I believe there’s hope for me / I’m back /… Yeah, I’m back.” In the third and final verse, she concludes wisely, “I wouldn’t go without it, the ups and downs and what-ifs / It’s all a part of being alive.” Life is a mixed bag, but even the worst parts are “a part of being alive.” Girl in red speaks sheer truth on “I’m Back” and shows she’s ready to embrace life head-on.

    40. Bright Light Bright Light, “You Want My…”

Bright Light Bright Light, Enjoy Youth [📷: YSKWN! / Megaforce]“You want my (sex), You want my (sex) / I’m never gonna let you see that part again.” Anytime that sex comes is uttered, the ears perk up. Bright Light Bright Light (Rod Thomas) mentions the universal, three-letter word many times in his spirited, minor-key, LGBTQ+ bop, “You Want My…” Fill in the ellipsis yourself  (it’s sex). But, as Thomas assertively sings in the tuneful chorus, “I’m never gonna let you see that part again.” Hmm, wonder why that’s the case? “You Want My…” appears as the opening track from Thomas’ 2024 LP, Enjoy Youth. “You Want My…” shines from the beginning. It’s the busy, dizzying synths, the danceable beat, and a confident and fierce Bright Light Bright Light.  The sex is introduced seconds in without context. It sets the tone.  Thomas sings superbly, killing the vocals.  Lyrically, “You Want My…” is equally intriguing, beyond explicit mention of the three-letter word.  “First time tonight you see the little light in my eyes,” Thomas sings in the first verse, adding, “I’ve been soft-spoken in words I don’t even think you heard me.” Uh-oh… Perhaps this is the reason why the sex isn’t happening: “Oh, you’re sorry that you let me go? You’re sorry that you couldn’t read in-between / What I have been and have yet to be? / And now? / You want my (sex).” Thomas provides additional context in the second verse, where it’s clear this guy ‘didn’t really see him’ and now, he wants him back, but Thomas can read right through the BS. “You Want My…” is a lit, gay pop banger.  Hold that a$$hole accountable that just wants your sex but doesn’t really see you!

Billy Porter & Luke Evans, Always Be My Man [📷: Island / Republic / Universal Music Operations Limited]The incredibly talented Billy Porter collaborates with Luke Evans – fellow actor, singer, and member of the LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 community – on  “Always Be My Man”. This touching duet appears in the motion picture, Our Son, starring both actors. The first voice heard on “Always Be My Man” is Porter, with his distinct, raspy instrument. Evans contrasts, with his smoother instrument. After Evans’ turn, Porter initiates the vocal power-up section, unsurprising given the robustness and gospel-influence of his pipes.  Evans, likewise, rises to the occasion, matching his on-screen hubby’s power.  Grammy winner Robert Glasper produces this heartwarming, romantic, and thoughtful record, written by Porter, Connor Reeves, and Joseph Peter Michael Killington. Besides the standard rhythm section (keys, guitar, bass, and drums), strings add elegance to the mix, arranged beautifully by Derrick Hodge. All told, “Always Be My Man” is sweet. Furthermore, it’s rare to hear two men sing a duet about mutual love, even in 2024 with as much as the LGBTQ+  catalog has expanded. This song is a winner in my book. Kudos Mr. Porter and Mr. Evans!

On “Time Waits for No One” he taps producer Boy Sim who puts in serious work behind the boards.  What makes the sound pop? It’s the keys, menacing synths, and some mean-sounding drums. Boy Sim plays a key role accompanying Jxckson – the music is sweet despite its dark nature.  Set in a minor key, Jxckson describes the song as a ‘dark-synthpop saga featuring operatic background vocals,’ adding that it’s ‘a blend of 90s industrial and electronic with a big production style and heft about it.’ The music shines, but we all know the star of the show is Jxckson.  Further describing this gem, he asserts:

‘I wrote “Time Waits for No One” as an exploration of my frequent (and sometimes contradictory) reflections on time, getting older, and the ticking clock that lives in all of us. It’s also about accepting that I wouldn’t change anything about my past.’

The sensational lyrics support this, particularly the chorus: “Count the hours / Feel every second / Cause we could go at / Any minute / (Tick tick tick tick tick).” Vocally, he brings a mysteriousness – a cinematic, dark approach. Not only does he ‘sing,’ he also serves up his fair share of playful, un-pitched vocals that showcase his personality. Jxckson is the man on “Time Waits for No One”.

This three-minute and change joint was penned by Williams, Cyrus, and Michael Pollack. Pharrell hands the work behind the boards, kicking things off with his signature, four count.  From there, over a minimal but potent instrumental, following the tone-setting, introductory bar, Miley gets to work! “I could be your doctor / And I could be your nurse / I think I see the problem / It’s only gon’ get worse,” Cyrus sings, in all her ‘medical’ glory in the tuneful chorus. She continues, “A midnight medication / Just show me where it hurts / I need to rock you, baby / Before your body bursts.” Ooh-wee! In the post-chorus, for good measure, she asserts, “Let lil mama work you out.” Gah-day-um! The record only features a sole verse, but Miley makes it worthwhile whenever and whatever she sings.  Her lead vocals are expressive and playful, while the background vocals add to the fun and allure with their tongue-in-cheek vibes. The songwriting isn’t deep, nor is it intended to be – “Are you on the fence? / Still playing on the side / Are you on the fence? / Don’t waste my damn time” – but ultimately, “Doctor (Work It Out)” is entertaining… also, groovy.

Omar Apollo, God Said No [📷: Warner]“Why you gotta ruin every night? / Fifty K, I spend it out of spite / Every time. I see you on my phone / Hate that I still need you in my life.” Handsome, talented, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Omar Apollo channels his anger into magnificent pop.  He penned “Spite” (God Said No) while Blake Slatkin and Teo Halm produced the record. The groove catches the ear from the onset, setting the tone of “Spite.” The pummeling beat, prominent bass line, and rhythmic guitar stand out. Early on, a soulful, pop/rock vibe is established.  There’s an alternative/indie vibe that Omar excels at.  He sounds terrific in the verses, expressing his feelings. “I’m too far, I’m across the boat now / Ain’t been the same since I left my hometown,” he sings in the first verse, continuing, “I’ve been thinking ‘bout moving by you / It’s been nice having somewhere to fly to.” Ah, matters of the heart, specifically, a long-distance relationship.  By the second verse, however, things are more tenuous: “Why you going out your way to hide me? / Every night that you spent beside me / It don’t matter, in my head, it’s working / Ain’t been picturing another person…” The pre-chorus is a fantastic build-up to the chorus, the crème de la crème, that is grander in sound.  Omar’s vocals are especially expressive during the chorus – he ups the ante. Additionally, some synths amplify the sound.  The post-chorus (“oohs”) shines as well. Ask yourself this question: does Omar Apollo ever make a bad song? The answer is a resounding, HELL NO.

Benson continues singing, enthusiastically, “And I flash back to every soundtrack / That played like a film scene / When I knew my feeling for you dear…” The love is potent in this Benson and Allen Miller-penned pop joint.  Benson also produces this major-key record, impressing with an authentic and sweet vocal performance. Benson’s bread is buttered in the best section of the song, the chorus. He asserts, “I knew it on the way home / Knew it in the night time runner’s high / I knew it in your bedroom (😈) / I’m in love, I’m in love.” He has a point. When you love someone, it feels and ‘hits different.’  “I’m in love, I’m in love” feels like the perfect, summer love song.  He reflects on his experiences and feelings with this person in the verse, noting a missing piece in the second verse: “Crash down, I broke your heart / When I moved to the city / Couldn’t find myself / But knew something was missing / I couldn’t keep feeling empty there / You’re taking all those feelings when you’re near.” Love confirmed! Benson concocts a beautiful, relatable love song in “I’m in love, I’m in love”.

Those lyrics are only a snippet of the sheer excellence of the song. Cardigan put his foot in this one! “Used to Care” thrives for a variety of reasons.  First and foremost, it’s Chaz Cardigan! C.C. serves up a mean brand of vocals – clear, commanding, and expressive.  Besides putting in work on tuneful melodies, his riffs and ad-libs are fabulous to the nth degree.  As already mentioned, the songwriting – the lyrics – are a sight to behold. Well, a sight to hear… ear-catching! There’s never a dull moment between “Tasted it all on my tongue blood and cum and caffeine / Everybody’s a TV show,” and of course the chorus: “Now I can’t think / So I just stopped trying / And when I can’t sleep / At least, baby / You’re not on my mind.” The final piece of the pie that makes “Used to Care” a surefire vibe? The production! It’s busy, but the rhythmic, dynamic nature of the instrumental provides fuel for Cardigan’s fire.  While Cardigan may not care so deeply, we care a lot about you, Chaz, and the fabulous “Used to Care”!

Speaking of MADness, Mad highlights his name in the bridge: “M! (a mess but I’m obsessed) / A! (always have to be perfect) / D! (don’t know what is my purpose).” “All-American Bitch” is NOT a cover of the Olivia Rodrigo song from her sophomore album GUTS – it’s a brand-new song. As always, the handsome, bisexual pop musician is fierce AF.  He penned “All-American Bitch!” alongside Nick Lopez and producer, Jason Suwito. What makes “All-American Bitch!” bitchin’– the sugar honey iced tea? The sound and production are a selling point.  Set in a minor key, there’s a celestial darkness.  The songwriting also shapes the excellence.  The lyrics are memorable and honest.  Mad Tsai emphasizes chasing and being “raised on the American Dream.” “I want blonde hair and a new address,” he asserts in the memorable pre-chorus, continuing, “I want a body that’ll make ‘em wish / That their boyfriends didn’t exist / I’m just an allAmerican bitch.” Ooh-wee! Not only is the pre-chorus great, but so is the chorus.  Mad Tsai brings awesome vocals and a big personality to the table on “All-American Bitch!”.

    48. Orville Peck & Willie Nelson, “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other”

    Stampede: Vol. 1 // Orville Peck, LLC / Warner // 2024

Orville Peck & Willie Nelson, Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other [📷: Orville Peck, LLC / Warner]Queer country music is awesome. Willie Nelson famously covered “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other” in 2006. This gay cowboy song, far ahead of its time, was penned by Ned Sublette in 1981.  In 2024, beloved, fringe-masked, gay country artist, Orville Peck, duets with Nelson on a brand-new cover of this queer country gem that appears on his album, Stampede: Vol. 1.  This 2024 rendition of “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other” was produced by Beau Bedford. The instrumental is subtle, which is perfect for allowing Peck and Nelson’s voices to shine. Peck starts things off, with his expressive, masculine baritone.  His tone is EVERYTHING. Gay men are often pigeonholed and stereotyped as being effeminate. Just hearing a ‘manly’ voice, from an openly gay musician, singing lyrics about male/male relationships is intriguing (“No, a small town don’t like it when a cowboy has feelings for men”). Following Peck’s verse, Nelson performs the second, delivering one of the best lyrics of the song: “But the ones [cowboys] who brag loudest are the ones that are most likely queer.” There is truth to the lyrics too, and it doesn’t simply limit itself to cowboys. Peck and Nelson join forces in the choruses, bringing out the cowboy love in, well, all its queerness. Following an instrumental break, Peck takes over the reins in the third verse, once more wowing with his awesome pipes.  He manages to drop in the most colorful verse – the one sporting an f-bomb!

“So, when you talk to a cowboy, don’t treat him like he was a sister

You can’t fuck with a lady that’s sleepin’ in each cowboy’s head.”

When Peck and Nelson join forces together on the queer country classic that is “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other”, it’s nothing short of magic!

The Power of the Heart: A Tribute to Lou Reed [📷: Rock and Roll Credit Card, Inc. / Light in the Attic]“Just a perfect day, drink Sangria in the park / And then later, when it gets dark, we go home.” In the 2024, Lou Reed tribute album, The Power of the Heart: A Tribute to Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright earned the extraordinary honor to cover one of the late, great musician’s best songs, “Perfect Day”. In the hands of the talented Wainwright, “Perfect Day” receives a minimalist, stripped take. Accompanying him is the guitar (Madison Cunningham) which is sufficient and fitting.

The fact that “Perfect Day” is stripped makes the listener lean into every lyric and every note that Wainwright sings. That’s part of the magic of Reed’s original given his modest vocals – we embrace the lyrics. Wainwright delivers an expressive vocal performance.  It’s more dynamic than the original yet, Wainwright never over-sings.  In the first verse, Rufus seems to emulate Reed’s delivery. In the chorus, he welcomes vocal harmonies, performing alongside Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Madison Cunningham.  The chemistry between the two vocalists is utterly sublime.  Perhaps their best moment is during the famous outro: “You’re going to reap just what you sow… ” Ultimately, Wainwright delivers a magical cover of “Perfect Day”. Nothing is perfect but this cover comes close!

Jon Campbell, Still Life With Motion Sickness [📷: 7lb]“My father’s got Ukrainian blood / Should I, should I, should I, worry more / About America and Russia’s war?” Thought-provoking lyrics from American-born singer/songwriter and visual artist, Jon Campbell.  The opening lyrics from “Ukrainian Blood”, the ninth track from the Berlin-based artist’s album, Still Life With Motion Sickness, set the tone for this socially conscious song.  Campbell composed, arranged, and produced the indie-folk cut, which sounds distinct from the opening tip.  Besides serving up superb, authentic vocals, Campbell also performs body percussion, in addition to playing colander and tambourine.  The percussion plays a key part in the sound, establishing a driving rhythm.  Also bolstering the sound of “Ukrainian Blood” is trumpet (Robin Kahl), trombone (Jan Landowski), and bass (Rosie Salvucci). The musicianship is top-notch – impressive.

The sound is a vibe, but the biggest reason why “Ukrainian Blood” is successful is the theme and lyrics. Campbell reflects on the inhumane state of the world, specifically citing his connection to the devastating situation in Ukraine.  Of course, he is NOT in the warzone: “I watch them from the safety of my phone / Can’t understand a sibling’s blood in our hands.”  Seeing devastation from pictures on a phone isn’t the same as experiencing it firsthand.  When you are part of a situation live and in person, it ‘hits different.’ Far too often, even if we, as humans find something to be horrible, we aren’t truly as affected or as outraged as we should be. In the final section of the song, he asks, “Where the hell’s our humanity? / Should I cry more for my baby niece / Or one in Yemen or Somalia / How much blood should we share before we know peace? / How much blood shall be shed before we know peace?” “Ukrainian Blood” marks an epic, must-hear number from a talented individual.
