Pop collective 5 Seconds of Summer releases a solid remixed version of “Lie to Me,” featuring by Julia Michaels, as their fourth single from Youngblood.
5 Seconds of Summer experienced their share of success with their third full-length studio album, Youngblood. While “Youngblood” was the big draw to the pop effort, Youngblood also had other notable moments, such as “Lie to Me.” Post-album, 5 Seconds of Summer releases “Lie to Me” as the fourth single from the album. Rather than stick with the original appearing on the LP, a remixed edition arrives featuring Grammy-nominated pop singer/songwriter, Julia Michaels (“Issues”).
“I saw you looking brand new overnight / And I caught you looking too, but you didn’t look twice.” On “Lie to Me,” Luke Hemmings and Calum Hood are saddened seeing an ex with a new guy, bringing back memories. This isn’t brand-new subject matter but suits 5 Seconds of Summer well overall. The verses set up the memorable chorus perfectly, ultimately ending with the request, “And I know that you don’t, but if I ask you if you love me / I hope you lie, lie, lie, lie to me.” As aforementioned, Julia Michaels appears on this remixed edition, arriving on the second verse. Beyond the brief verse, Michaels sings on the following pre-chorus, and contributes to the chorus alongside Hemmings.
Final Thoughts
All in all, the results are strong on the remixed version of “Lie to Me.” 5 Seconds of Summer have plenty of positives working for them, including great production work, and solid vocal performances. Julia Michaels also does a solid job, providing contrast to the original on the second verse. Nothing here is game changing, but ultimately, “Lie to Me (Remix)” is worthwhile.
