1. Luther Vandross, โ€œNever Too Muchโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Never Too Much โ€ข ๐Ÿท Sony Music Entertainment โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 1981

Luther Vandross, Never Too Much [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony]โ€œToo much, never too much, never too much, never too much!โ€ AMEN! Yes, I realize that ๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Too Muchโ€ isnโ€™t a gospel record, but man does a classic, groovy record like this make you want to witness! Hallelujah!!! The late, great, ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winner ๐ŸŽ™ Luther Vandross recorded and released this staple, back in 1981. Hard to believe this timeless joint is four decades old! It commenced Vandrossโ€™ debut album, also titled ๐Ÿ’ฟ Never Too Much.  Notably, another beloved greatest hit of Vandrossโ€™ appears on the album: ๐ŸŽต โ€œA House is Not a Homeโ€ (also worth witnessing to).

So, why is โ€œNever Too Muchโ€ so awesome? First and foremost, Luther Vandross.  Few singers could match the smoothness, tone, phrasing, and overall ease with which Luther sang.  On this quick, groovy 80s soul cut, he never sounds as if he ever breaks a sweat while singing it โ€“ itโ€™s absolutely amazing.  Beyond the vocal performance, the songwriting and the production are utterly sublime, both of which are also handled by Vandross.  With talented instrumentalists behind him, as well as some background vocals, the sound is celestial.  The melody he composed and performs is elite, with the quick, rhythmic lines on the verses and longer, more connected passages on the chorus, capped off by โ€œToo much, never too much, never too much, never too muchโ€ that commenced this blurb.  Some songs just speak for themselves and โ€œNever Too Muchโ€ is a prime example.

โ€œOh, my love
A thousand kisses from you is never too much
I just donโ€™t wanna stop
Oh, my love
A million days in your arms is never too much
I just don't wanna stop.โ€

2. Katy Perry, โ€œNever Really Overโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Smile โ€ข ๐Ÿท Capitol โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Katy Perry, Smile [๐Ÿ“ท: Capitol]๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Really Overโ€ marks one of the best songs from ๐Ÿ’ฟ Smile, the 2020 studio album by ๐ŸŽ™ Katy Perry. โ€œNever Really Overโ€ sounds sleek from the onset, with its bright synths, pummeling drums, and its optimistic sound.  ๐ŸŽ› Zedd and ๐ŸŽ› Dreamlab get the credit for a superb backdrop for the pop star.  While it is a bright record set in a major key, Perry reminisces back on exes.  In the pre-chorus she sings, โ€œI tell myself, tell myself, tell myself, โ€˜Draw the lineโ€™ / And I do, I do / But once in a while, I trip up, and I cross the line / And I think of you.โ€

Fittingly, the incredibly catchy chorus finds Perry providing context to the song title โ€“ the relationship may be over, but you always remember it:

โ€œTwo years, and just like that
My head still takes me back
Thought it was done, but I
Guess itโ€™s never really over
Oh, we were such a mess
But wasnโ€™t it the best?
Thought it was done, but I
Guess itโ€™s never really over.โ€

It doesnโ€™t end there, as a pre-chorus further analyzes the situation, while in the second verse, Perry is trying to โ€œrewire this brainโ€ with no success.  Hey, itโ€™s โ€œNever Really Over.โ€ Ultimately, โ€œNever Really Overโ€ is a catchy, fun, well-rounded pop record through and through.

3. Camila Cabello, โ€œNever Be the Sameโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Camila โ€ข ๐Ÿท Epic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2018

Camila Cabello, Camila [๐Ÿ“ท: Epic]Hard drums anchor the well-produced (๐ŸŽ› Frank Dukes) ๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Be the Sameโ€, the opener from ๐Ÿ’ฟ Camila.  Camila marked the ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated debut studio album from former ๐ŸŽ™ Fifth Harmony standout, ๐ŸŽ™ Camila Cabello. In addition to Camilla herself, โ€œNever Be the Sameโ€ was penned by a team comprised of ๐ŸŽผโœ Adam Feeney, ๐ŸŽผโœ Jacob Ludwig Olofsson, ๐ŸŽผโœ Leon Rami Dawod, ๐ŸŽผโœ Noonie Bao and ๐ŸŽผโœ Sasha Yatchenko.

On the verses, Cabello never pushes her voice much. Her stunning falsetto shows up, in all its sexiness and sweetness, beginning on the pre-chorus. Cabello exhibits the most vocal oomph during the high-flying chorus.

โ€œItโ€™s you babe
And Iโ€™m a sucker for the way that you move, babe
And I could try to run, but it would be useless
Youโ€™re to blame
Just one hit of you, I knew Iโ€™ll never be the same.โ€

Although somewhat casual, โ€œNever Be the Sameโ€ is a solid start to Camila, and a fine addition to this never-driven playlist.

4. The Offspring, โ€œWe Never Have Sex Anymoreโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Let the Bad Times Roll โ€ข ๐Ÿท Wabi Sabi Worldwide LLC / Concord โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

The Offspring, Let the Bad Times Roll [๐Ÿ“ท: Wabi Sabi Worldwide LLC / Concord]โ€œWe never have sex anymore / We never roll around on the floor like we did so long ago.โ€ Hmm, intimacy issues, ๐ŸŽ™ The Offspring? Perhaps. The veteran bandโ€™s single, ๐ŸŽต โ€œWe Never Have Sex Anymoreโ€, appearing on their 2021 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Let the Bad Times Roll, continues with more things that have changed within the relationship beyond the matters of the bedroom: โ€œYou never yell at me anymore / You never want to even the score like you did so long ago / But youโ€™re still with me so I guess Iโ€™m not complaining / And you always leave my dinner on the stove.โ€

Basically, it sounds as if the singer (or his character) and his wife are in a rut.  Itโ€™s not that they donโ€™t love and care for each other, but even the good and bad times have sort of just become neutral.  I mean, ๐ŸŽ™ Dexter Holland go so far as to sing, โ€œBaby please! / If you wonโ€™t love me, will you hate me? / If you wonโ€™t violate me, well, will you just at least aggravate me?โ€ Heโ€™s not seeking out abuse but rather desires more oomph, life, and within the relationship, like they once had.  Of course, as couples get older, one of the first things that falls by the wayside is sex, hence why The Offspring key-in on this.

โ€œWe used to do it constantly
We used to have a ball
We use to do it everywhere
We never do it at all.โ€

Besides he fun, sexless lyrics, the sound of the record is pretty rad, with colorful sounds courtesy of horns and piano in addition to standard rock instrumentation.

5. Taylor Swift, โ€œWe are Never Ever Getting Back Togetherโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Red โ€ข ๐Ÿท Big Machine โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2012

Taylor Swift, Red [๐Ÿ“ท: Big Machine]Before ๐Ÿ† Grammy winner ๐ŸŽ™ Taylor Swift made it official that she was leaving country music in favor of pop (๐Ÿ’ฟ 1989), sheโ€™d already began the transition on her 2012 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Red. Yes, Red still had country music flowing through her veins, but the pop (or โ€˜country popโ€™ if you like) was much more pronounced here compared to previous albums.  One such pop record fits this togetherness embracing list, ๐ŸŽต โ€œWe are Never Ever Getting Back Together.โ€ If making the assertion โ€œwe are never getting back togetherโ€ wasnโ€™t enough, Swift makes it crystal clear that she and her ex are โ€œnever ever EVER getting back together.โ€

Piggybacking on the idea that Red is a transitional Taylor Swift album, โ€œWe Are Never Ever Getting Back Togetherโ€ was co-written by Swift with pop producers ๐ŸŽ› Max Martin and ๐ŸŽ› Shellback (they produce the track as well).  Naturally, the production encompasses โ€˜popโ€™ cues including a pounding beat, rhythm guitar.  It doesnโ€™t go as far to the left as โ€œI Knew You Were Trouble.โ€ from the same album โ€“ it eschews dubstep and whacky synths โ€“ but this is pop music.  Swiftโ€™s vocal performance is catchy, cutesy, and playful, while the chorus specifically was among the catchiest of 2012:

โ€œWe are never, ever, ever, ever, getting back together
...You go talk to you friends talk
To my friends talk to me
But we are never, ever, ever, getting back together.โ€

Pop has certainly worked out for Taylor Swift, hasnโ€™t it?

6. Eminem, โ€œNever Love Againโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Music to Be Murdered By โ€ข ๐Ÿท Interscope โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Eminem, Music to Be Murdered By [๐Ÿ“ท: Interscope]Iconic, ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning rapper ๐ŸŽ™ Eminem rediscovered some of his mojo on his surprise 2020 studio album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Music to Be Murdered By.  It wasnโ€™t perfect mind you, but definitely an improvement. On ๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Love Again,โ€ the listener is treated to some old-school production, produced by Eminem, ๐ŸŽ› Dr. Dre, Dem Jointz, ๐ŸŽ› Trevor Lawrence, Jr., and ๐ŸŽ› Dewaun Parker.  In addition to its classic sound in the context of the album, the rapper serves up rhymes referencing drug use โ€“ charming!

โ€œI can only take so much of you at one time
Because too much of youโ€™s just too much to swallow sometimes
Gotta take you in doses, but when youโ€™re not at my side
I shake in convulsions, separation anxiety โ€˜cause we may be the closest.โ€

If itโ€™s that sort of love that Eminem is referencing, then he certainly should NEVER LOVE AGAIN!

7. The Weeknd, โ€œI Was Never Thereโ€

Ft. Gesaffelstein

๐Ÿ’ฟ My Dear Melancholy, (EP) โ€ข ๐Ÿท Republic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2018

The Weeknd, My Dear Melancholy, (EP) [๐Ÿ“ท: Republic]๐ŸŽต โ€œI Was Never Thereโ€ appeared as the fourth track on the 2018 EP by ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning R&B artist, ๐ŸŽ™ The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye), ๐Ÿ’ฟ My Dear Melancholy, (EP).  The Canadian standout brings French DJ and producer ๐ŸŽ› Gesaffelstein into the fold.  Gesaffelstein produces alongside ๐ŸŽ› Frank Dukes. The sound of the record is incredible, retaining the dark tilt established from the start of the EP as a whole.

โ€œI Was Never Thereโ€ was written by Tesfaye, ๐ŸŽผโœ Adam Feeney and ๐ŸŽผโœ Mike Levy. Lyrically, on thereโ€™s ample repetition, with the heartbroken, melancholic singer emphasizing the pain.

โ€œWhen itโ€™s time, when itโ€™s time, when itโ€™s time (time, itโ€™s time, babe)
It wonโ€™t matter (it wonโ€™t matter, babe)
It wonโ€™t matter (ya)
It was like he was never there
(It was like he was never there)
It was like he was gone in thin air, oh.โ€

Despite lyrical limitations, โ€œI Was Never Thereโ€ is the lengthiest record on My Dear Melancholy, (EP).  Even so, thereโ€™s a well-executed, tasty production shift, and continual expressiveness courtesy of the distinctly voiced singer.

8. BLACKPINK, โ€œYou Never Knowโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ THE ALBUM โ€ข ๐Ÿท YG Entertainment / Interscope โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

BLACKPINK, The Album [๐Ÿ“ท : YG Entertainment / Interscope]On their short but utterly sweet debut ๐Ÿ’ฟ The Album, K-Pop girl group ๐ŸŽ™ BLACKPINK impress with their knack for making hits that wonโ€™t leave your head anytime soon.  The Album only had eight songs in total, but guess what? All eight are worthy of multiple spins.  Only one fits the โ€˜neverโ€™ criteria of this list โ€“ concluding number ๐ŸŽต โ€œYou Never Know.โ€

โ€œYou Never Knowโ€ concludes The Album strongly blending Korean and English.  Furthermore, this mid-tempo ballad incorporates some contemporary R&B sensibilities, in addition to the standard, hella slick K-pop script.  Thatโ€™s not far-fetched, considering the influence of R&B on the genre.  Here, it shines in magnificent fashion. The vocals are ripe and the artistry (personality) lit. Most of the chorus, the epic centerpiece is in English, which certainly โ€˜brings it on homeโ€™ for the fans and stans stateside.

9. Luke Combs, โ€œBeer Never Broke My Heartโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ What You See is What You Get โ€ข ๐Ÿท River House Artists / Sony โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Luke Combs, What You See is What You Get [๐Ÿ“ท: Columbia]โ€œLongneck ice-cold beer never broke my heart / Likinโ€™ diamond rings and football teams have torn this boy apartโ€ฆ / And longneck ice-cold beer never broke my heart.โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Luke Combs indulges in BEER ๐Ÿบ as his drink of choice โ€“ at least when it comes to ๐ŸŽต โ€œBeer Never Broke My Heartโ€, which appears on his 2019 sophomore album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ What You See is What You Get. Love, politicians, and sports teams have all messed him up, but never that glorious substance known as beer.  It shouldnโ€™t come as a surprise โ€“ country musicians have notorious love for beer.

Luke Combs keeps it relatively tight on โ€œBeer Never Broke My Heart,โ€ just inching past three minutes in duration.  Besides a respectable length, he does a fabulous job of maintaining the country music script.  He delivers robust vocals, heavy on twang, and unapologetically country.  Here, Combs is all โ€˜old-schoolโ€™ on this straightforward, turned-up, guitar-heavy joint. Perhaps he doesnโ€™t revolutionize country music with this alcoholic joint, but it is rock-solid, period.

10. Lady Gaga, โ€œIโ€™ll Never Love Againโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ A Star is Born Soundtrack โ€ข ๐Ÿท Interscope โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2018

Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born Soundtrack [๐Ÿ“ท: Interscope]โ€œI wouldโ€™ve broke my heart in two / Tryinโ€™ to save a part of you.โ€ Prepare for a sad one folks, sigh. ๐ŸŽต โ€œIโ€™ll Never Love Againโ€ appears as the final song on the ๐Ÿ’ฟ A Star is Born Soundtrack โ€“ itโ€™s some kind of closer.  Furthermore, in the film, itโ€™s the final song performed by ๐ŸŽ™ Lady Gaga (Allie).  On this gorgeous ballad, Allie remembers Jack (๐ŸŽ™ Brandley Cooper), who committed suicide.  Even though A Star is Born is film as opposed to real life, this is an unfortunate, tragic ending โ€“ get the tissues ready.

โ€œIโ€™ll Never Love Againโ€ allows Lady Gaga to show her impressive vocal skills.  At times she opts for more poise.  At other times, she delivers more powered, robust vocals.  Throughout, the memories and the extent of her love for late hubby are front and center.  The chorus says it best:

โ€œDonโ€™t want to feel another touch
Donโ€™t wanna start another fire
Donโ€™t wanna know another kiss
No other name falling off my lips
Donโ€™t wanna to give my heart away
To another stranger
Or let another day begin
Wonโ€™t even let the sunlight in
No, Iโ€™ll never love again
Iโ€™ll never love again.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Pony โ€ข ๐Ÿท Rex Orange County / Sony โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2019

Rex Orange County, Pony [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony]โ€œBut I never got the chance to tell you / I never had the balls to tell you / No, I never had the balls to tell you.โ€ After being ๐ŸŽต โ€œStressed Outโ€ on his third studio album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Pony, ๐ŸŽ™ Rex Orange County (Alex Oโ€™Connor) follows up with โ€˜balls,โ€™ or a lack thereofโ€ฆ  On ๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Had the Balls,โ€ Oโ€™Connor depicts his lack of confidence to tell her how he feels.  One of the best moments on this driving, sparkling, major-key number is the bridge that appears between the second and third verses.

โ€œโ€˜This could be the best decision that you ever make
Please, donโ€™t be afraid,โ€™ she reassures me
I know itโ€™s hard to play pretend
I promise you itโ€™s due to end
And winners never quit, you know, so quitters never win
(Itโ€™s only getting better now for you).โ€

The uplifting sensibility is awesome.  So are the strings, and the production in its totality.  The chorus may be โ€˜rough around the edgesโ€™ using โ€˜ballsโ€™ as its central lyric, but itโ€™s also highly effective โ€“ quite potent.

12. Hayley Kiyoko, โ€œHeโ€™ll Never Love You (HNLY)โ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Expectations โ€ข ๐Ÿท Atlantic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2018

Hayley Kiyoko, Expectations [๐Ÿ“ท: EMPIRE / Atlantic]โ€œI left a mark on your neck / I know that you wonโ€™t forget / Yeah, I know, yeah, I know, Iโ€™m the best youโ€™ve ever had.โ€ Da-yum โ€“ thatโ€™s confidence right there! If you werenโ€™t aware, there is a โ€œLesbian Jesus.โ€ No, Iโ€™m not intentionally trying to offend anyone or blasphemy (I repent).  Furthermore, I didnโ€™t personally coin the nickname, though it actually seems fitting (contradicting my repentance?). Regardless, โ€œLesbian Jesusโ€ is how ๐ŸŽ™ Hayley Kiyoko has been referred to.  She definitely came out roaring on her debut album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Expectations, where sheโ€™s unafraid to speak from a queer perspective.

On ๐ŸŽต โ€œHeโ€™ll Never Love You (HNLY),โ€ which she produces with ๐ŸŽ› Jono Dorr, she encourages her ex-girlfriend to come back to her.  That, of course, means her ex- must ditch her boyfriend.  Yeah โ€“ complicated situation to say the least!

โ€œI know every day youโ€™re thinking of me (thinking of me)
I make it better when youโ€™re feeling lonely (feeling lonely)
You say no one will understand
You wish you could, but you just canโ€™t, so
How many days, how many nights?
โ€˜Til you realize, heโ€™ll never love you like me?
Heโ€™ll never love you like me.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™ll Never Love Youโ€ sheds light on a relevant bisexual / โ€œhetero-curiousโ€ situation.

13. Lyyke Li, โ€œNever Gonna Love Againโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ I Never Learn โ€ข ๐Ÿท RCA โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2014

Lykke Li, I Never Learn [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]โ€œBaby, can you hear the raian fall on me? Never gonna love again / Baby, can you hear my heart cry tonight?โ€ On the beautiful, ๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Gonna Love Againโ€, Swedish alternative-pop singer ๐ŸŽ™ Lyyke Li vows that sheโ€™s, well, โ€œnever gonna love again.โ€ Why? Because she only wants him and nobody else.  If she canโ€™t have him, sheโ€™ll never love anybody else.  Itโ€™s passion, hence that makes this gem from her 2014 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ I Never Learn, sound incredibly enthusiastic.

The major key and the gargantuan scope of the refrain also amplify her dedication and resolve to make things work. You can tell Lyyke Li โ€˜feels some type of way,โ€™ willing to find a solution to what ailed her previous relationship.

โ€œEvery time the rain falls, think of me
On a lonely highway
How can we turn around the heartache?
Oh, I, Iโ€™m alone tonight, babe
And Iโ€™m never gonna love again.โ€

Lykke Li seems to accept her lot in love, but should she? Even as sheโ€™s experiencing some trying times, thereโ€™s nothing trying about this gem.

Death from Above 1979, Outrage! Is Now [๐Ÿ“ท: Warner Bros]Canadian punk-rock duo ๐ŸŽ™ Death from Above 1979 โ€“ ๐ŸŽ™ Jesse F. Keeler and ๐ŸŽ™ Sebastien Grainger โ€“ returned in 2017 with its third studio album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Outrage! Is Now. The duo keeps things short and sweet on standout, ๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Swim Aloneโ€. The title alone is intriguing, wouldnโ€™t you say?  Furthermore, an aggressive, energetic sound is a major selling point.

Chocked-full of energy, there are gritty, distorted, whiny vocals.  Fittingly, we get a characteristic f-bomb:

โ€œBackseat conceive, so unclean
Plug it in like USB
18 years, fuck being free...โ€

Yeah โ€“ โ€œFuck being freeโ€ indeed Sebastien! Also, worth mentioning, is sick guitar work. Ultimately, โ€œNever Swim Aloneโ€ is simply delicious, especially the catchy, โ€˜discouragingโ€™ chorus that tell us to, โ€œNEVER. SWIM. ALONE!โ€

15. Halsey, โ€œNow or Neverโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Hopeless Fountain Kingdom โ€ข ๐Ÿท Astralwerks โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2017

Halsey, hopeless fountain kingdom [๐Ÿ“ท: Astralwerks]โ€œNever pick up, never call me / You know weโ€™re runninโ€™ out of time / Never pick up when you want me / Now I gotta draw a lineโ€ฆโ€ On ๐ŸŽต โ€œNow or Neverโ€, ๐ŸŽ™ Halsey is firmly planted in pop (thereโ€™s always been a debate on the degree of her alternativeness). The production on this gem from her 2017 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, is handled by a star-studded team: ๐ŸŽ™ Benny Blanco, ๐ŸŽ™ Cashmere Cat and ๐ŸŽ™ Happy Perez.

On โ€œNow or Never,โ€ the modus operandi is love versus non-love. She keeps it real, yet simple. From her perspective, her lover is โ€œhot n coldโ€ exemplified by the pre-chorus above. On the chorus, she confirms her desire for love right now or never.

โ€œ...Said you know I wanna keep you around
โ€˜Round forever, hey, hey, hey
I want you to love me now, now, now, now, now, now
Now or never.โ€

Pretty cut and dry right? Right. The second verse offers much of the same.  Halsey wants him, yet thereโ€™s still clearly dysfunction within the relationship: โ€œTryna talk to a wall / But you could never tear it down for me.โ€ By the bridge, she sends the final ultimatum:

โ€œYeah, draw the line up
Donโ€™t take no more time up, yeah
Make your mind up
I need you to make your mind up, yeah...
Baby you gotta decide something
Let me know.โ€

โ€œNow or Neverโ€ isnโ€™t particularly innovative in subject matter, production, vocal performance or otherwise, but itโ€™s ultimately enjoyable.

16. Anthony Hamilton, โ€œNever Love Againโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Ainโ€™t Nobody Worryinโ€™ โ€ข ๐Ÿท Arista โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2005

Anthony Hamilton, Ain't Nobody Worryin' [๐Ÿ“ท: Arista]๐ŸŽ™ Anthony Hamilton is a ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning R&B artist whoโ€™s had to fight for every ounce of success heโ€™s achieved. Finally, back in 2003, he โ€˜came upโ€™ with a platinum-certified album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Cominโ€™ From Where Iโ€™m From, propelled by soulful hit, ๐ŸŽต โ€œCharleneโ€.  His follow-up album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Ainโ€™t Nobody Worryinโ€™, would give him a gold-certified album. It also provides us with a brilliant, โ€˜love againโ€™ song, โ€œNever Love Again.โ€

โ€œNever Love Againโ€ is something of an โ€˜uncharacteristicโ€™ performance by Hamilton.  How so? Well, it finds the gritty soul singer tapping into his falsetto for the majority of the song.  Sure, we get that robust middle register on the chorus, but the verses are dominated the head โ€“ โ€˜head voiceโ€™ that is! When I first heard this song years back, Iโ€™ll never forget being so impressed hearing how potent he was going outside the box.  As far as the theme, Hamilton questions if he can get back to point of loving again following a devastating break-up. On the centerpiece, the chorus, he sings:

โ€œHow could I ever love again
How could I start to love again
After you broke me down, itโ€™s hard
To trust that feeling, to fall in love again.โ€

17. Flume, โ€œNever Be Like Youโ€

Ft. Kai

๐Ÿ’ฟ Skin โ€ข ๐Ÿท Mom+Pop โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2016

Flume, Skin [๐Ÿ“ท: Mom+Pop]โ€œIโ€™m only human, canโ€™t you see? I made, I made a mistake / Please just look me in my face, tell me everythingโ€™s okay / โ€˜Cause I got it, ooh, heโ€™ll never be like you.โ€ ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning EDM artist ๐ŸŽ™ Flume (Harley Streten), wants his music to reach further and transcend โ€œcommercial EDMโ€. Thatโ€™s awesome! He definitely delivered โ€˜the goodsโ€™ on his 2016 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Skin.  The crowning achievement of skin was ๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Be Like You,โ€ featuring ๐ŸŽ™ Kai.

โ€œNever Be Like Youโ€ mixes urban, pop, and electronic elements. Flume masterfully synthesizes it all. As for Kai, she paints over Stretenโ€™s production radiantly. She flexes with f-bombs and flaunts her glorious upper register.

โ€œI would give anything to change this fickle-minded heart
That loves fake shiny things
Now Iโ€™m fucked up and Iโ€™m missing you
He'll never be like you.โ€

18. Katy Perry, โ€œNever Worn Whiteโ€

๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Worn Whiteโ€ โ€ข ๐Ÿท Capitol โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Katy Perry, "Never Worn White" [๐Ÿ“ท: Capitol]๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Worn Whiteโ€ marks the second ๐ŸŽ™ Katy Perry to grace this never-driven list following ๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Really Overโ€.  While โ€œNever Really Overโ€ made the final cut on her 2020 studio album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Smile, โ€œNever Worn Whiteโ€ was totally M.I.A.  Despite its absence, the standalone single was quite respectable, finding Perry dropping the rare ballad.

โ€œNever Worn Whiteโ€ is beautifully executed overall.  ๐ŸŽ› Johan Carlsson does a nice job setting up Perry with lovely production.  Musically, itโ€™s anchored by piano and strings โ€“ gentler, more radiant sounds.  Perry herself sounds more alluring and compelling than she has in some time.  Sheโ€™s never been the most technically gifted vocalist, but the way she uses her instrument here โ€“ the expressiveness and nuances โ€“ are pretty sweet.  Listening to โ€œNever Worn White,โ€ I believe what she has to sell โ€“ the authenticity is clear and present.  Particularly impressive is how she truly rises to the occasion towards the end of the record, โ€˜bringing it on home.โ€™

Itโ€™s easy to be more authentic when the subject matter is mature.  โ€œNever Worn Whiteโ€ is about a committed, dedicated relationship, with matrimony in mind.  โ€œThank God that you were man enough to come,โ€ Perry sings on the pre-chorus, continuing, โ€œAnswer my prayers / You asked the question, I said, โ€˜Yesโ€™ / But Iโ€™m scared.โ€ Of course, the centerpiece is the following chorus, where Perry wants to be the best version of herself to her future husband:

โ€œโ€˜Cause Iโ€™ve never worn white
But I wanna get it right
Yeah, I really wanna try with you
No, Iโ€™ve never worn white
But Iโ€™m standinโ€™ here tonight
โ€˜Cause I really wanna say, โ€œI doโ€

19. Rick Astley, โ€œNever Gonna Give You Upโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Whenever You Need Someone โ€ข ๐Ÿท Sony โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 1987

Rick Astley, Whenever You Need Somebody [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony UK]One of the โ€˜most 80sโ€™ hits of all time arrived courtesy of ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated British singer, songwriter, and personality, ๐ŸŽ™ Rick Astley. Cutting straight to the chase, his iconic, former no. 1 hit ๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Gonna Give You Upโ€ was more than enough to secure his musical legacy.  Of course, Astley had other hits off his 1987 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Whenever You Need Someone, including another no. 1, ๐ŸŽต โ€œTogether Foreverโ€.  Still his ace in the hole is the hella groovy, hella infectious โ€œNever Gonna Give You Up.โ€

Take one listen to โ€œNever Gonna Give You Upโ€ and you know that youโ€™re listening to a certified bop.  Even more than 30 years after it first arrived, Astleyโ€™s most important single of his career is still potent to the nth degree.  The production is absolute fire, the vocals are expressive, and the chorus is golden to the nth degree.  I could sit here and pick apart every aspect of this timeless record but thereโ€™s no need โ€“ it speaks for itself.

โ€œNever gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.โ€

20. Marvin Sapp, โ€œNever Would Have Made Itโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Thirsty โ€ข ๐Ÿท Sony โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2007

Marvin Sapp, Thirsty [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]โ€œNever would have made it / Never could have made it without you / I would have lost it all / But now I see how you were there for me.โ€ Itโ€™s a rarity when a contemporary gospel song impacts the pop charts.  The inspirational, spiritually charged ๐ŸŽ™ Marvin Sapp gem ๐ŸŽต โ€œNever Would Have Made Itโ€ (๐Ÿ’ฟ Thirsty) is one of the rare songs that simply couldnโ€™t be contained to gospel charts.

โ€œNever Would Have Made Itโ€ landed on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at no. 82, an amazing feat for a gospel record. โ€œNever Would Have Made Itโ€ ended up being certified platinum, while Thirsty went on to attain gold certification.  More important than the commercial success is the message โ€“ why โ€œNever Would Have Made Itโ€ was so successful. Itโ€™s a song about faith, resolve, and strength, giving thanks to God for his mercy (โ€œI am stronger / I am wiser / And now I am better / so much betterโ€).  Even the most faithless person is hard pressed to deny the power of the song, regardless of belief in a deity or not.
