14 Songs That Are Definitely Diamonds
features Dame Shirley Bassey, Father John Misty, Megan Thee Stallion, Sam Smith & Shivum Sharma.
Diamonds . There have been plenty of songs written about and/or featuring those gems in their respective title.
The Beatles served up
βLucy in the Sky with Diamondsβ on their 1967 masterpiece,
Sgt. Pepperβs Lonely Hearts Club Band (
Elton John would cover it on
Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy in 1974). Years later, in 1991,
Prince & The New Power Generation gave us some sweet
βDiamonds and Pearlsβ. The point is, look throughout music history, and diamonds are definitely a thing. Weβve even served up some previously, as far as lists are concerned:
11 Songs Focused on Diamonds and more recently,
Diamond
: 5ive Songs No. 10.
So, with we examine those diamonds once more with 14 Songs That Are Definitely Diamonds
. This list features select songs from 11 Songs Focused on Diamonds, all five songs from Diamond: 5ive Songs No. 10, and a couple of newbies that havenβt previously been featured. Among the artists contributing to these diamonds are

Father John Misty,
Megan Thee Stallion,
Sam Smith, and
Shivum Sharma among others. So, without further ado, get your diamonds on β bracelets, earrings, necklaces β and check out this gem of a list!
1. Sam Smith, βDiamondsβ
Love Goes β’
Capitol β’
2020
Academy Award and Grammy-winning musician
Sam Smith returned in 2020 with their third studio album,
Love Goes. Among the best songs from Love Goes was
βDiamondsβ. The listener is blessed with lovely vocals by Smith. Theyβre supported by sleek production work courtesy of
Shellback and
Oscar GΓΆrres. Matters of the heart dominate as Samβs ex- was more about material things where they favored the relationship. Even with lost love, βDiamondsβ is spirited, not downtrodden. Beginning with the first chorus, weβre treated to a danceable groove. On the second verse, we get more melodic variations, eliminating predictability. Where musicianship is concerned, I like how Smith begins singing in an undertone on the bridge, before rebuilding the intensity heading into the final chorus.
The chorus is quite catchy; it instantly gets stuck in your head:
βMy diamonds leave with you Youβre never gonna hear my heart break Never gonna move in dark ways Baby, youβre cruel My diamonds leave with you Material love wonβt fool me When youβre not here, I canβt breathe Think I always knew My diamonds leave with you.β

2.Megan Thee Stallion & Normani, βDiamondsβ
Birds of Prey: The Album β’
Atlantic β’
2020
βDiamonds are a girlβs best friend / β¦Southern girl like me, I ainβt afraid to catch a case/ VVβs on me and I flooded out the face.β In 2020,
Megan Thee Stallion and
Normani joined forces on
βDiamondsβ, the promo single from the soundtrack,
Birds of Prey: The Album. βDiamondsβ is filled with mad energy and attitude.
Louis Bell and
MD$ provide the ladies with a sick backdrop β in a minor key, hard-nosed, and tough. The beat anchors things down, while the synths are ripe, particularly the low, brassy one. Post-instrumental intro, Normani commences βDiamonds,β with the aforementioned chanted chorus.
Megan follows up with surefire toughness on the over the course of two verses. True to the script, sheβs a βSuper she-ro, bitch, donβt try me, ho / Bad like a villain, I pop it and then I reload.β On the second verse, she also keeps it 100 as she spits, βCome through with my girls, then beat your ass on ladiesβ night.β Woo! βDiamondsβ is an energetic and feisty cut with its fair share of moments.

3. Charli XCX, βpink diamondβ
how Iβm feeling now β’
Warner UK β’
2020
βpink diamondβ is the first indication that
how iβm feeling now β the βquarantineβ album by
Charli XCX β is quite a trip. The βrawβ nature of the LP begins here. The synths are wild β totally in your face. Furthermore, when there is a groove, itβs also quite aggressive and feels like itβs going to pummel the shit out of you.
At the same time Charli actually isnβt turned up to the same overt degree as her backdrop, yet manages to capture the same emotion β weird, but true. Here, her lines are fast-paced, rhythmic, and chanted/pop-rapped. If it does nothing else, βpink diamondβ sets the tone.

4. Shivum Sharma, βDiamondβ
βDiamondβ β’
Shivum Sharma β’
2020
βWhen you see the ground again / My Diamond in the sky,β
Shivum Sharma sings radiantly on
βDiamond,β a must-hear, 2020 single from the southeast London artist. He continues, βWell, will you be found again / Blessed is your goodbye.β Oh, the poetry of the chorus, and thatβs a mere excerpt! Of βDiamond,β Sharma tells Daniel Megarry of Gay Times, βDiamond is a tribute to the soft golden 70s soul Iβve grown up with.β
βDiamondβ was written and produced by Sharma and
Alex Burey. The backdrop is dreamy and lush, a perfect match for Sharmaβs expressive, nuanced voice. The effect is one thatβs soulful, yet in a sweet, βcroonerβ sort of way. Sharma sounds particularly potent in his upper register β stunning (and sexy) to say the least. In addition to the aforementioned excerpts from the chorus, the second verse is pretty sweet:
βHe said, βBoy, you see my videos?β βOr we can leave our feelings at the doorβ So, taken at the given cost He gives me everything I need and more.β
In his feature in Gay Times, Sharma adds, βAlthough itβs a sad song, it carries a lot of sun with it.β Indeed Shivum β itβs definitely a diamond!
5. Father John Misty, βDisappointing Diamonds are the Rarest of Them Allβ
Godβs Favorite Customer β’
Sub Pop β’
2018
Father John Misty (Josh Tillman) keeps things short on
βDisappointing Diamonds are the Rarest of Them Allβ, the seventh track from
Godβs Favorite Customer. Despite the brevity, the production is alluring, including instrumentation including piano, guitars, bass, drums, and saxophone. Vocally, Tillman serves up a liberal amount of falsetto, which is compelling if uncharacteristic.
The lyrics exemplify typical, clever Father John Misty through and through. βLike a carcass left out in the heat / This love is bursting out of me.β Goodness gracious. The centerpiece is the chorus, where the titular lyric comes into play. βDisappointing diamonds are the rarest of them all / And a love that lasts forever really canβt be that specialβ¦β Yup, Godβs Favorite Customer. This particular record also appeared on the playlist

6. Rihanna, βDiamondsβ
Unapologetic β’
Def Jam β’
2012
βAt first sight I felt energy of sun rays / I saw the life inside your eyesβ¦β Wowβ¦ thatβs so beautiful! Despite being named
Unapologetic, not every song from the 2012
Rihanna album can be classified as being βunapologetic.β Case in point, the precious gem
βDiamonds,β which finds the
Grammy-winner asserting on the intro and outro, βShine bright like a diamond, Shine bright like a diamond.β
In the context of Unapologetic, the Barbadian pop/R&B singer contrasts the overt βPhresh Out the Runwayβ that precedes with the tame yet potent no. 1 hit. βDiamondsβ features excellent production work, as well as sound vocal production. The chorus is simply marvelous:
βSo, shine bright tonight, you and I Weβre beautiful like diamonds in the sky Eye to eye, so alive Weβre beautiful like diamonds in the sky...β

So Much Fun β’
300 Entertainment β’
2019
βDiamonds come up to her throat / I ainβt never fuck, Iβm the Popeβ¦β Okay β this is gonna be
So Much Fun! Of course, So Much Fun is 2019 album by
Grammy-nominated, idiosyncratic, melodic trap rapper,
Young Thug. He enlists fellow melodic rapper,
Gunna, for the assist on the opener,
βDiamonds.β
Piβerre Bourne stitches up the track.
Expectedly, βDiamondsβ isnβt um, the most profound joint ever recorded, but itβs heavy on confidence, drip, drugs and sex. βEvery day she tell me Iβm the G.O.A.T.,β Thugga asserts, continuing, βSheβd never lie to the G.O.A.T.β As for Gunna, well, βAdderall (βRall), mary jane keepinβ me geeked.β Woo!

8. benny blanco, βMore/Diamond Ringβ
Ft. Ty Dolla $ign & 6LACK
Friends Keep Secrets β’
Friends Keep Secrets / Interscope β’
2018
Near end of 2018, producer and songwriter
benny blanco released a seven-song, 21-minute album entitled
Friends Keep Secrets. The project is a star-studded affair, featuring a variety of collaborations. Blanco gives us the perfect song for this diamond-driven affair,
βMore / Diamond Ring,β featuring
Ty Dolla $ign and
6LACK. βMore/Diamond Ringβ commences with a moody intro, set in a minor key and establishing the vibe of the record.
Jesse Rutherford (of
The Neighbourhood) the sings the chorus, featuring some heavily processed vocals.
βYou are all I need but sometimes, baby, I need more than that, mhm Need more, mhm, said You were all I ever wanted but sometimes I just want more Give me more, more, it's more, I want you.β
Following the unique refrain, Ty Dolla $ign blesses the track with his signature robust, distinct pipes. Naturally, heβs a perfect match for this record. 6LACK enters the picture on the switch-up (βDiamond Ringβ) with his own one-of-a-kind vocals getting to work.

9. Lil Yachty, βLil Diamond Boyβ
Lil Boat 3.5 β’
Quality Control Music β’
2020
βIβm a lilβ diamond boy, mmm, I be shining boy, ah.β Sure,
Lil Yachty, sure. The brief, melodic
βLil Diamond Boyβ (assisted by autotune), commences the rapperβs 2020 LP,
Lil Boat 3.5. Give him credit for his confidence, even if thereβs nothing the least bit transcendent lyrically. I mean, unless the likes of βGoddamn, you be grinding, boy / Ballinβ on them niggas, I feel like Zion, boyβ is considered transcendent (I do heart the Zion
reference though).
Regarding the Jay Versace-helmed production, Iβm all in on that robust bass line. Itβs not deep but shouldnβt we all believe in ourselves? Of course β we should all be lilβ diamond boys and girls!

10. Lady Gaga, βDiamond Heartβ
Joanne β’
Interscope β’
2016
βSome asshole broke me in / Wrecked all my innocence,β
Lady Gaga sings on
βDiamond Heart,β continuing, βIβll just keep go-goβn / And this dance is on you.β βDiamond Heartβ commences the
Academy- and Grammy Award winning artistβs
Joanne in spirited fashion. Interestingly, βDiamond Heartβ is written by quite a talented, diverse team in addition to Gaga herself:
Mark Ronson and
Josh Homme. Furthermore, Gaga, Ronson and Homme join a production that includes
Bloodpop and
Jeff Bhasker. Wow!
A defining feature of βDiamond Heartβ is its driving groove. Lady Gaga shows more poise and restraint on the verses, while still being incredibly potent. That said, by the chorus, her level of passion and dynamics are amplified. Simply put, Gaga sings her face off. This powerful opener from Joanne is definitely a diamond!
βYoung, wild, American Cβmon baby, do you have a girlfriend? Rain on me a million Iβm not flawless, but I got a diamond heart.β
11. Dirty Heads, βDiamonds & Pearlsβ
SWIM TEAM β’
Five Seven Music β’
2017
βItβs a wonderful world, yeah / Fucking diamonds and pearls, yeah / They donβt understand what weβre living for / Make βem understand life is beautiful.β Alternative collective
Dirty Heads up the diamond count with
βDiamonds & Pearls.β
Dirty J raps the first verse with a sick flow exhibiting incredible agility. Safe to say, he has bars.
βLouis Armstrong in the lane Got a bad bitch give me brain better than Etta James Iβmma do my thing, man, singing in the rain I donβt make claims, you can put it on my name, ah.β
He goes on the sing the infectious, aforementioned chorus like a champ. Duddy B enters the picture on the second verse, adding to the collection of sick bars spit.
βCause I got a plan and a rendezvous And people, sometimes, they donβt understand And these are the fuckers with attitude And I ainβt got time for foolishness.β
In addition to the attitude and bars brought by Dirty J and Duddy B, the production work is sleek. A hard, swagger-laden beat, warm piano (on the chorus), and top-notch synth action.

What A Time to Be Alive β’
Cash Money β’
2015
So, just how exactly do βdiamonds dance?β Great question! Since every great question deserves a great answer, here it is β money, money, money! Basically,
Grammy winners
Drake and
Future are talking about material things, specifically things like diamonds that are bought with plenty of bread on
βDiamonds Dancing.β The song marks one of the best moments from their joint mixtape,
What a Time to Be Alive, released in 2015. One of the reasons βDiamonds Dancingβ does totally βshine bright like a diamondβ is sleek production courtesy of
Metro Boomin,
Adam Ritter, and
Frank Dukes. Yep β itβs totally a vibe!
Revisiting theme and lyrics, thereβs more to βDiamonds Dancingβ beyond just drip if you follow those brilliant annotators at Genius. What does βDiamond, diamond, diamond, diamonds on me dancingβ really mean β that is the question! Well, apparently, exotic βdancersβ if you catch the drift. Different diamonds than expected, right?
13. Jaheim, βDiamond in da Ruffβ
Still Ghetto β’
Warner β’
2002
βWe started out like Bobby and Whitney / Justin and Britney / Then it all got uglyβ¦β Apparently,
Jaheim, apparently! Among the gems from
Still Ghetto, the 2002 album by the
Grammy-nominated R&B singer is
βDiamond in Da Ruff.β βDiamond in Da Ruffβ serves up the perfect blends of contemporary soul (with ample throwback touches) and the streets, something that Jaheim has balanced brilliantly throughout the course of his career. The production is awesome (
No I.D and
X-Treme), while the vocals are a vibe in their own right. Of course, the best part of the song is the chorus, which is incredibly rousing.
βLike when I spot a rainbow Or see a fallinβ star A set of twins, or a classic car A four-leaf clover or a two dollar bill Itβs so rare that it's so unreal I donβt know how To get over her smile I wonder what sheβs doinβ now I think about her every once in awhile.β

Greatest Hits β’
Parlophone β’
1997
βDiamonds are forever / They are all I need to please me / They can stimulate and tease meβ¦.β Classic! Iconic! Those are all accurate, fitting ways to describe the
Dame Shirley Bassey, James Bond film gem,
βDiamonds Are Forever.β Of course, it is the aforementioned lyrics (as well as the forthcoming continuation) that instantly pop up/stick in oneβs head: ββ¦They wonβt leave in the night / Iβve no fear that they might desert me.β
Besides the memorable lyrics, led by the titular line, there are some many more pros regarding βDiamonds Are Forever.β Vocally, Bassey is commanding, sassy, and soulful simultaneously. She never under- nor over-sings, instinctually giving the performance exactly what it needs at exactly the right time. Besides those powerful pipes, the sound and production of this record totally stand out. When you hear βDiamonds Are Forever,β you totally hear James Bond given the vintage sounds including dramatic, soaring strings and biting, emotional brass. Indeed, this is a diamond cut that will live on forever and ever. Also, canβt fail to mention its role in the Kanye West gem,
βDiamonds from Sierra Leoneβ (
Late Registration, 2005).
