1. ETHAN, “Single in the Club”
DIVINE INTERVENTION (EP) // ETHAN // 2024
“Loosen my body / Got me all choked up / Stressed out for what? / Now I’m off your drug.” Ooh-wee! I’d be remiss if I failed to mention how chiseled, handsome, and sexy ETHAN (Ethan Choryin Luo) is 😍. That fella right there – smoking hawt! The producer, singer, and songwriter from Auckland, New Zealand, based in Sydney, Australia, is also incredibly talented beyond those dashing good looks. “Single in the Club”, the second track from his 2024 EP, DIVINE INTERVENTION, is brief but ultra-sexy and filled with swagger.
“One at a time, they’re coming at me / Under disguise, brand-new city,” ETHAN sings, continuing, “Slowly defining what it means to be / Free.” Like the preceding “Rain Down,” “Single in the Club” is slickly produced courtesy of ETHAN, Zach Bahn, Adam Buckingham, and Benjamin DeSoto Mayor. The instrumental gives urban-dance-pop vibes, sounding like the club. His voice ‘kicks ass and takes names,’ sounding youthful and nuanced, flaunting a fabulous tone. His riffs and runs are fabulous too. There are pitch-shifted vocals and sickening vocal effects in play. The melodic lines are fast-paced and rhythmic, matching the clubby vibes. The songwriting (him and Isadora Soliman) feels liberated, loose, and ‘ready for some action’:
“Won’t recognize me I’m moving different
Got up my stacks, brand-new vision
Got a new boy call me masterpiece
Van Gogh, Monet, painted like Matisse.”
ETHAN not only are you a ‘masterpiece,’ but so is “Single in the Club”.

2. Selena Gomez, “Single Soon”
“Single Soon” // Interscope // 2023
“Should I do it on the phone? / Should I leave a little note / In the pocket of his coat? Yeah.” Woo! One thing is for sure, Selena Gomez is about to be “Single Soon”. The pop artist has had her fair share of success, particularly when the song is tailored to her modest voice (no shade). When it comes to “Single Soon,” Gomez writes alongside the likes of Ammar Malik, benny blanco, Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Lisa Scinta, Magnus August Hoiberg (Cashmere Cat), Phil Shaouy, and Ross Golan. In addition to writing, Blanco and Cashmere Cat work behind the boards. Gomez keeps things simple on “Single Soon.” Thematically, she’s ready to step out, unattached to a man. This theme is one of the pros of the songs. The production – the banging beat, lush, warm pads, and colorful synths – is a pro. The chorus, adds to selling points, coming off as relatively catchy. Less impressive are the vocals, which are okay – so-so – mostly during the verses. Regarding the tune, the melody in the verses is a bit odd. All told, “Single Soon” is enjoyable.

3. Morgan Wallen, “Single Than She Was”
One Thing At A Time // Big Loud // 2023
Per Morgan Wallen, “She’s a little more single than she was.” Um, okay… sure. “Single Than She Was” appears deep in the country musician’s multiplatinum, 2023 album, One Thing At A Time. The question is, why is she a little more single than she was? Well, when Mr. Wallen finds her, she’s alone at the bar, and while she claims she’s meeting someone she’s seeing, he never shows up. In the chorus, the twang-heavy, East Tennessean asserts:
“She let me buy her a drink
She even stole a sip of mine
She drug me front of the stage
Dance on my boots ‘til closin’ time
I got her number and her name
I ain’t sayin’ her and her mans got any plans on breakin’ up
But I’ll tell you what
She’s a little more single than she was.”
Makes sense, even if it is still a weird title and certainly isn’t grammatically correct. As far as the sound, producer Joey Moi serves up standard, contemporary country production. The melodies are respectable – tuneful enough – with the chorus being the best moment. The bridge provides some separation from the other sections, which is always a win. “Single Than She Was” won’t change your life, but worth a listen.

4. Natasha Bedingfield, “Single”
Unwritten // Sony Music Entertainment UK Limited // 2024
English pop singer/songwriter Natasha Bedingfield broke through in the U.S. with her gold-certified album, Unwritten. “These Words” and “Unwritten” were the songs to beat, earning significant success on the Billboard Hot 100. In the UK, “Single” was the first single released from Unwritten 🤯. It was the third single released in the U.S., peaking modestly at no. 57. Even though it didn’t electrify the pop charts stateside, “Single” is another awesome Natasha Bedingfield song. The instrumental cooks, produced by Wayne Wilkins, Andrew Frampton, and Steve Kipner. The vocals by the talented, soulful vocalist are marvelous. Those ad-libs and runs are the sugar honey iced tea. The songwriting is also a selling point (Bedingfield, Wilkins, Frampton, and Kipner). In the first verse, Bedingfield declares, “I don’t need to be anyone’s baby /… No, I don’t need another half to make me… whole.” In the second, she adds, “I’m not saying I don’t wanna fall in love, ‘cause I would / I’m not gonna get hooked up just ‘cause you say I should.” Word. In the chorus, Natasha embraces singledom:
“This is my current single status
My declaration of independence
There’s no way I’m trading places
Right now a star’s in the ascendant
I’m single (Right now)
That’s how I wanna be.”
“Single” marks another bright spot from Unwritten, PERIOD.

5. Josh Ross, “Single Again”
Complicated // The Core Entertainment / Universal Music Canada Inc. // 2024
“I know I shouldn’t say ‘What’s up?’ / I heard you went and met someone / But I got a little cold beer buzz and he ain’t here right now.” Josh Ross, you were correct on the first line of the first verse of “Single Again” – you shouldn’t holla at her. Of course, with the drink in him, and his ability to charm, he believes he can make his old flame his again. The country musician gives his all on the opener from his 2024 album, Complicated. He penned “Single Again” with Brad Rempel and Joe Fox. Matt Geroux produced it.
The theme of “Single Again” is relatable: past love you’d like to reignite. It’s not that easy, however. Ross is reminiscent in the chorus, telling her, “You know I got that same old Tennessee / Six-one-five that you used to hit up,” and a “a king-sized bed / Just missin’ a queen.” His point? “Make me your first call / After your last call with him / And you won’t ever be single again.” Josh Ross gives it his best shot to rekindle his past relationship. Is it successful? Unlikely, but the song is highly successful.

6. Fousheé, “single af”
“single af” // 2020
“I can proudly say I’m, I’m / Say that I’m / Single as fuck.” Well, that’s blunt as fuck, Fousheé. We know exactly where the R&B singer stands on her 2020 single, “single af”. She co-wrote “Single af” with Jared Solomon aka Solomonophonic and Matthew Burnett. Solomon and Burnett produced the record. The f-bomb is naughty 😈 but the chorus is incredibly musical 💪. Melodically, it’s gimmicky, slick, and playful. She is single because her past love has been flawed and not worth it. Even so, she’s ready to try again. “Finally, ready to go out and get it,” she sings at the end of the first verse, continuing, “Never felt so sexy, feel bad for my exes / I’m living my life.” Here’s the deal though, she may be “single, ready to mingle” but she’s also “Not ready to settle but practice is helpful.” Her confidence is through the roof! Ultimately, “single af” is a fun, refreshing R&B joint.

7. Big Sean, “Single Again”
Detroit 2 (Deluxe) // Getting Out Our Dreams, Inc. / Def Jam / UMG Recordings, Inc. // 2022
“I’m single again (single again) / Told her we’ll be better off friends / Maybe I should just focus on me / And slow down, don’t rush romance.” Love, or the lack of love or the necessity for it currently, was on Big Sean’s mind in “Single Again”. Released as a single in 2019, “Single Again” resurfaced as the 23rd track on the 2022 deluxe edition of Detroit 2. Big Sean is in a mellow, reflective place. There is also greater maturity. He references one of his least mature career hits (“Got me feeling like ‘I Don’t Fuck with You’”) in the first verse, but follows up saying, “Oh nah, nah, that’s the old me.” Singing and melodically rapping, he reflects on himself and his issues with love.
“And you know I suck at lying, don’t go do it to me
Maybe ‘cause my mama never worked it out with my dad
Maybe ‘cause she had insecurities and she had ‘em bad
Maybe ‘cause single-parent love was all I ever had
Who knows.”
Notably, Sean gets assistance from Jhené Aiko and Ty Dolla $ign, both uncredited. One of the biggest assists comes from the instrumental, which samples the 2000 Carl Thomas hit, “I Wish”. The premise of “Single Again” is thoughtful. The epic Carl Thomas sample and reflective message go a long way.

8. Kuami Eugene, “Single”
LOVE AND CHAOS // Lynx Ghana Limited / EMPIRE // 2023
“Throw me out the window / And I go, come back to you like a boomerang / Not anymore, not anymore.” That’s right! The handsome and talented Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene (Eugene Kwame Marfo) is D-O-N-E, DONE ✅. He’s given all he can to the relationship on “Single” with nothing in return. On the highlight from his 2023 album, LOVE AND CHAOS, the Afrobeats/Afro-pop/highlife artist adds, “I’m done crying over you, I’m walking away / I’m walking away and I won’t come back anymore.” So, guess what he is after this unfortunate relationship? In the infectious chorus, he informs us, “I’m single, for now / Single, for now / Solo, for now.” Eugene penned and produced “Single.” He delivers delightful, pleasant vocals. The smoothness of his tone is breathtaking. The production is sensational. It’s anchored by rhythmic drum programming and smooth instrumental touches, led by keyboards. “Single” is a surefire vibe.

9. ALPHAS, “Single Mother”
Throwback // ALPHAS // 2019
“You dreamed of having a picture-perfect family / But the man, you chose for this, wasn’t for keeps…” Life is filled with arduous, unideal situations. Musicians have penned songs to assuage unbearable ails and tribulations for ages. Under-represented is the prevalent single mother. London-based, genre-bending duo ALPHAS (formerly Noble Gray) – Fabian Raad-McAndrew and Jarmane Raad-McAndrew – gave the single mother the powerful voice deserved on “Single Mother”, the third track from their 2019 LP, Throwback. It’s sublime lyrically and musically. The duo dips into R&B and pop, amplifying soulful, ‘throwback’ sensibilities, while embracing ‘now.’ The keys and programming create an awesome backdrop. Fabian sings dramatically and dynamically expressing the plight of the single mother. Continuing the lyrics excerpted from the first verse, he sings, “Before you knew, kids were born and was way too late / To finalize, plans for your escape.” Often, single mothers find themselves ‘in the thick of things,’ losing control of their anticipated life. Life ‘hits’ them and ‘that’s that.’ The second verse is similar, where a life has been forever changed. ALPHAS captures it best in the chorus, defending, “You didn’t choose it this way” and perhaps most moving, “You did the best you could / Single mother / When I’m alone, I’m okay ‘cause I learned from you.” ALPHAS paints single mothers as resilient, selfless, and strong.

10. Dei V, “Single”
“Single” // Under Water Music LLC // 2023
“To’ el mundo le tira / Y ella los tiene haciendo fila con ese culo / Ella tiene un novio / Y yo estoy velando la güira pa’ ver si me la robo.” Woo, Dei V! Now, for us non-Spanish speakers, how do the lyrics from the pre-chorus of “Single” translate? Roughly, “Everyone is after her / And she has them lining up with that ass / She has a boyfriend / And I’m watching closely to see if I can steal her.” Oh, snap 🫰! The Puerto Rican rapper and singer doesn’t care if she is single or taken – he wants her! She’s a bad bitch. He is also a bad boy: “Baby, fuck me when I fuck you too / That ass drives me crazy.” The peach 🍑 is influential. Even though he plans to ‘have fun’ (“Hey, my love, if your ex comes to mess with us, I have an AK pistol”), he isn’t allowing anyone to get in the way of his money (“After I give them dick, I go back to making money”). “Single” is entertaining – an engaging Latin trap, urbano latino banger. The suave Dei V has no shortage of swagger 💯.

11. Beyoncé, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
I Am… Sasha Fierce // Sony // 2008
“All the single ladies (All the single ladies) / All the single ladies / Now put your hands up.” WOO! Need an example of a truly ubiquitous song? Look no further than “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” one of the best songs in the illustrious musical catalog of Beyoncé. The song which deservingly won the Grammy for Song of the Year, appears on her 2008 double album, I Am… Sasha Fierce. “Single Ladies” is filled with fun. Produced by Queen Bey, The-Dream, and Tricky Stewart, “Single Ladies” remains fresh 15 years after its arrival. The beat! The synths! Most of all, the assertive, attitude-laden vocals of Queen Bey with catchy lyrics make “Single Ladies” a surefire winner. The minute you hear it, whether you’re a single lady, a married lady, or a fella, it makes you wanna dance – #INFECTIOUS. The chorus is golden, with Beyoncé telling these boys, if you like it (aka her) you better lock it (her) down!
“‘Cause if you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it
If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.”

12. Lil Wayne, “I’m Single”
I Am Not a Human Being // Cash Money // 2010
In 2010, Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne proclaimed, I Am Not a Human Being. Fair enough – he knows better than anybody else. On the double-platinum LP, he dropped a five-and-a-half-minute song, “I’m Single.” The downtempo “I’m Single” was produced by Noah “40” Shebib and Omen. The sound is chill and lush, packing more punch with the beat. Lil Wayne delivers his fair share of memorable lyrics, In the first verse, a frustrated Weezy raps, “Damn, she text me all day and night / So pissed off she ain’t even spelling shit right / I text her back and tell her it’s life / Now somebody tell them hoes, I’m single for the night.” Ooh-wee! After establishing the annoyance of his relationship, Lil Wayne has some adult fun. The chorus sums things up:
“And I’m single, yeah, I’m single
And I’m single, tonight I’m single
I ain’t tripping on nothing, I’m sipping on something
And my homeboy say he got a bad bitch for me tonight.”
The third verse is filled with sex and infidelity. He makes his ‘hoe’ “feel special like a placekicker,” so much so that she “say she wish she could cut my dick off and take it with her.” Whoa 😳! Notably, “she came hard, both times 😶.” Of course, neither Lil Wayne nor this nameless woman are being truthful about their situations. “We both say we single, and we both lying / We both wrong, but it feel right / Put your hands up if you single for the night.” “Single For The Night” is one the best songs from I Am Not A Human Being. It is a vibe.

13. Cameo, “Single Life”
Single Life // The Island Def Jam Music Group // 1985
“Every little thing you do / Makes me smile / And if I had my way, baby / I’d tie you up for a while.” Woo, Cameo! The funk collective delivers surefire funky vibes on “Single Life”. “Single Life” is the second track from their 1985 album, Single Life. Front man/lead singer Larry Blackmon is “living the single, single, single / Life / The single, single, single / Life.” Yessir! Although it failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, “Single Life” peaked at no. 2 on the R&B songs chart 👍.
The original from the album runs six-and-a-half minutes in duration. However, the single version runs four-and-a-half minutes. The sound is idiomatic of the 1980s with the big, boxy drums carrying a sick groove that you can’t resist tapping your foot to. Furthermore, that robust bass line helps to anchor things down. Larry Blackmon sounds terrific vocally. Vocal layering is another selling point of “Single Life.” Also, the playful lyrics shine.
“Just like a car I’ll drive you
Out of your mind
It’s always the first step
In us having a good time.”
Judging by “Single Life”, living the single life is lots of fun!
