1. Parsa Sleighter, “Bedroom Superstar”
“Bedroom Superstar” » Parsa Sleighter » 2025
If you haven’t peeped Parsa Sleighter via social media, you are missing a treat. The eyes don’t lie… he is a beautiful specimen. And yes, he often refrains from wearing a shirt. No complaint here. Beyond being a beautiful man, Sleighter possesses a beautiful instrument. The last time I covered the self-described alternative princess was in 2024: “A Playboy’s Blues”. Once again, Sleighter provides sweet music to my ears with the four-minute ballad, “Bedroom Superstar”. Ooh-la-la, Parsa! He wrote and produced this impressive track.
“Bedroom Superstar” is a vibe from the beginning. Parsa Sleighter is unafraid to lean into experimental, alternative, and psychedelic cues and sounds. The musical backdrop is celestial, with the detuned keyboard, organ, and synths. The drum groove is solid but non troppo, anchoring the ballad moving along. In no rush, Parsa sumptuously captures an ambient, dream-like aesthetic. When the song is titled “Bedroom Superstar,” that is the expectation, right? Bedroom pop. With its sleepy, somnambulant aesthetic, the track makes me want to float… and of course, sleep and cuddle with someone fine. Vocally, Sleighter delivers enigmatic, indulgent, and warm vocals. His tone is gorgeous as he brings the melodies and lyrics to life. Is he a male Lana Del Rey? He sort of sounds like it here, riding the lush backdrop with ease. I could continue to expound upon my analysis, but Parsa Sleighter and “Bedroom Superstar” are best enjoyed by experiencing them – seeing, listening, and straight-up vibing.

2. Saweetie & TWICE, “superstars”
“superstars” » ICY / Warner Records Inc. » 2025
“Superstars” begins with various members of TWICE singing the chorus (“I got friends that wanna party and they look like superstars”). The sound of the record is bright and warm, set in a major key. Following the memorable chorus, Saweetie brings a respectable cadence and flow in the first verse. “Passenger princess whippin’ the coupe (Coupe) / I’m finna pull up on you,” she raps, and adds, “Ride or die, I be there ‘til the wheels off / Take me home, got you taking my heels off.” Oh, snap! Before the chorus, Saweetie introduces a pre-chorus that expresses her desires. Following the chorus, there is a brief bridge, where she asks, “Do you like it when I drive fast?” and, “If I switch gears, can you last?” Damn! Sweetie takes the reins in the second verse as well, revving up the innuendo: “Top down, ass out / Grab that wheel, don’t crash out / Spoiled lil brat, I’ma do me / Got that boy so stressed out.” Indeed! Although “superstars” is short, it is a fun listen.

5. Rainbow Kitten Surprise, “Superstar”
Love Hate Music Box » RSK Recording / Elektra Entertainment » 2024
“Superstar” is a superstar track for many reasons. The ripe guitars shine, while a strong groove provides a mighty anchor. Again, Ela sings superbly, delivering the rhythmic melodies like a champ. “Telling me we’re meant to be, it’s like we cracked the code,” Melo sings in the second verse, and adds, “I lost the key and, baby, I bought everything you sold me.” Word. Relatable to the nth degree. The chorus is big, serving as one of the brightest spots.
“Well, you told me you loved me, baby
I’m your superstar again
I was always gonna win
I was so above the rest
In your eyes, in your mind
In your heart, in your head
I’m your superstar
I’m your superstar
I can’t be nothing less.”
The tuneful melody and memorable lyrics make the chorus shine. Beyond the centerpiece, the bridge marks another bright spot. “Someday when it counts / I’m gonna beat the buzzer, babe,” she sings, and continues, “The scream is because of me / Do you remember when you told me.” “Superstar” is a winner from Rainbow Kitten Surprise.

8. Crown The Empire, “Superstar” (Ft. Remington Leith)
DOGMA » Rise » 2023
Fitting for a superstar, “Superstar” begins with an enigmatic, striking intro, set in a minor key. The melodies are beautiful, starting with the tuneful first verse (excerpted above). Andy Leo gives a compelling vocal performance. He continues to wow in the refrain and pre-chorus. I love his powerful, whiny vocals in the chorus. Expectedly, the chorus is memorable, yielding more tuneful melodies.
“I just want the diamonds
I just want the fame
Probably die alone but I can’t complain
Imma be a star, star
I can be your monster
I can be your slave
Probably burn in hell
But I’ll swing from the chains
Imma be a star
I’ll show you.”
Remington Leith enters the picture in the second verse. Once more, the listener is blessed with beautiful vocals. Upping the ante are dramatic, striking lyrics. The lyrics are more dark and damning than blessed: “Wake up with bloodshot eyes / Didn’t know heaven would be this bright / Worth more dead than I am alive / Ain’t no angel but I stay this high, high.” Word. Leith also delivers his own pre-chorus, with some morbid, suicidal references. The 27 club, baby 😳! Despite the dark, hellish vibes, “Superstar” in the hands of Crown The Empire and Remington Leith is, dare I say, pretty sweet!

9. Dominic Fike, “Superstar Sh*t”
What Could Possibly Go Wrong » Sandy Boys, LLC / Columbia » 2020
“Superstar Sh*t” keeps things brief, running just over two minutes long. A lovely pad accompanies the initial vocals. Fike’s singing is strong during the chorus. In the verses, there are vocal effects. The dying relationship – those pesky matters of the heart – drives the narrative and songwriting. “Forgot how good it feels to be alone, you dig?” Fike sings in the first verse. Hmm, so, he’s okay with being single, we presume? Well, in the second verse, his tune changes: “Windin’ down a long day / Forgot how hard it was to sleep alone in here /… I can’t believe it’s over still.” Fike seems to have a hard time wrapping his head around the relationship. Lyrics like, “It wouldn’t break your back to stand beside me / Forever and a mile was tantalizin’” raise eyebrows. Despite the brevity, “Superstar Sh*t” is intriguing and thought-provoking.

10. Usher, “Superstar”
Confessions » LaFace » 2004
Usher goes on to proclaim, in the memorable chorus, “I’ll be your groupie baby / ‘Cause you are my superstar / I’m your number one fan, give me your autograph / Sign it right here on my heart…” Again, it is clear that he is digging on her something fierce! Furthermore, he “drove twelve hours, girl, just to see / Your pretty face one more time.” My, my, MY! Ultimately, “Superstar” is consistent compared to the rest of this 5-star LP, easily ranking among the top tier of Confessions. The slickly produced “Superstar,” which was produced by Dre & Vidal (Andre Harris and Vidal Davis), samples a lush 1973 Willie Hutch song, “Mack’s Stroll (The Getaway)”. Usher penned this

11. Pras, “Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)” (Ft. Ol’ Dirty Bastard & Mýa)
Ghetto Supastar » Ruffhouse Records LP » 1998
“Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)” is well-produced (Wyclef Jean and Jerry Duplessis). The bass, guitar, keys, and drum groove stand out. Notably, “Ghetto Supastar” sampled three songs: “Islands in the Stream” by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, “Under the Influence of Love” by Love Unlimited, and “Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved” by James Brown. With those classics sampled, the list of songwriters grows lengthy: Pras, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Wyclef Jean, Bobby Byrd, James Brown, Ron Lenhoff, and the Bee Gees (Robin Gibb, Maurice Gibb, and Barry Gibb). The crowning achievement of “Ghetto Supastar” is the unforgettable chorus, excerpted above. Mýa does the heavy lifting, singing superbly with an angelic tone. “Run away with me to another place,” she sings, and adds, “We can rely on each other, uh-huh / From one corner to another, uh-huh.” Pras takes the reins in the first verse, showcasing a fabulous cadence and flow. He rides the beat like a champ. “Black Caesar, dating top divas / Diplomatic legalese; no time for a Visa,” he raps, and adds, “Got five sides to me, something like a pentagon / Strike with the forces of King Solomon.” Word. ODB raps the second verse, bringing his signature sound, rapping from a political perspective (“My eyes is sore, being a senator” and “So, I became hardcore, couldn’t take it no more / I’m a reveal everything, change the law”). Pras raps the third verse, asserting, “Kick your balls like Pelé ⚽️, pick ‘em doing ballet / Peak like Dante, broader than Broadway.” Both rappers also drop another verse, with Pras memorably spitting, “Two-faced, getting defaced, out like Scarface,” and ODB stating, “But it’s all good as long as it’s understood / It’s all together now in the hood.” Pras’s solo career didn’t excel like Lauryn Hill or Wyclef Jean, but the memorable “Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)” is a big-time bright spot.

12. Marilyn Manson, “Antichrist Superstar”
Antichrist Superstar » Interscope » 1996
“Repent, that’s what I’m talking about / I shed the skin to feed the fake…” Naturally, “Antichrist Superstar” is chocked-full of religious references, though clearly, none pay ode to The Most High himself. Manson focuses on himself, likening himself to the mythological Hydra at one point.
“Cut the head off
Grows back hard
I am the Hydra
Now you’ll see the star.”
In Manson’s ‘satanic’ eyes, “The time has come, it is quite clear / Our Antichrist is almost here.”

13. Luther Vandross, “Superstar”
Busy Body » Sony Music Entertainment » 1983
There are few singers who could sing as smoothly as Luther Vandross. Vandross was the exemplification of cool energy and finesse. His vocal performances can be characterized by being refined. One of Vandross’ best, most iconic performances was his cover of “Superstar,” popularized by The Carpenters, who covered the songs themselves. Appearing as the seventh track on his 1983 album, Busy Body, the original nine-minute-long song is fused with the soul gem, “Until You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)”. On various greatest hits compilations, it’s released as a standalone, five-and-a-half-minute-long number.
Listening to Luther sing “Superstar” is a heavenly experience – it’s almost spiritual! His tone is silky smooth, riding lush production work with incredible ease. He sings with utmost expression yet never forces things. Furthermore, that backdrop, intact with keys, strings, and backing vocals, never crowds or inhibits Vandross – he’s always in command. Speaking of background vocals, I love it when we get those sweet ‘Lutheran’ (not religious) harmonies. The Carpenters performed this Bonnie Bramlett / Leon Russell classic sensationally, but Vandross makes it his own, gorgeous adult contemporary R&B masterpiece.
