“I’ma keep it nice, nice, neat, neat, sugar, sugar, sweet, sweet.”
Iconic, Grammy-winning R&B/pop singer/songwriter Mariah Carey keeps things sugar and sweet on her single, “Sugar Sweet”. “Sugar Sweet” is the fourth track from Carey’s 2025 comeback album, Here For It All. The single was released near the end of July 2025. She tapped Grammy-nominated Jamaican 🇯🇲 singer Shenseea (Chinsea Lee) and Grammy-nominated R&B standout, Kehlani, for assistance on this sugary sweet R&B track. Featuring multiple songwriters, including Carey, she produced it with HARV.

“Sugar Sweet” features a sleek contemporary R&B backdrop with a hint of tropical flavor. Carey sounds smokier here, singing in her lower and middle registers. “Walk to the car and there you are / Can’t explain the rush that I feel,” Carey sings, and continues, “Open up the door, you pull me towards you / Then you put your lips on me.”  In the pre-chorus, Carey asserts, “Baby, I’m / Gonna use my expertise / I’ma keep it nice, I’m a keep it neat / I’ma keep it sugar, I’ma keep it sweet.” Word. Indeed, the memorable chorus, excerpted earlier, is sugary sweet. Kehlani sings the second verse, memorably referencing Carey’s 2005 The Emancipation of Mimi single, “It’s Like That” (“‘Cause I wanna take a ride / Let me blow your mind / Ride it from the passenger side (Side) / It’s like that y’all (That y’all)”). Shenseea sings the third and final verse, where she asserts, “And mi guarantee to love you proper (And mi guarantee) / So sweet, like a gizzada.” Ultimately, Mariah Carey, Shenseea, and Kehlani make a formidable trio that makes music that is indeed “Sugar Sweet”!

2. Tyler, The Creator, “Sugar On My Tongue”

DON’T TAP THE GLASS » Columbia » 2025

“Like sugar on my tongue, tongue, tongue / Your body is so sweet, sweet, sweet,”
Tyler, The Creator (Tyler Okonma) sings in the first verse of “Sugar On My Tongue”. He continues, “Invite me if you come, come, come /… It’s all I want to eat, eat, eat.” Gah-day-um, T! “Sugar On My Tongue” is the second track from the rapper/singer/producer’s surprise 2025 album, DON’T TAP THE GLASS. “Sugar” is one of the most fun moments, filled with energy… and sex… The drum run sets the tone in the intro.  The beat is hard-hitting, while the backdrop is set in a minor key. Another pro regarding the musical accompaniment is the colorful, striking synths.

Tyler, The Creator infuses plenty of personality into his melodic rap performance. Case in point: “Tell the bitches that you know / What you heard about me?” “Sugar” thrives thanks to tuneful melodies and Tyler’s memorable, sexually charged bars. Among the naughtiest lyrics are the titillating, “I got a brush, give me your walls and I’ll paint, uh-huh / Don’t need no air, I stay down there ‘til I faint.” Also, the double entendre on the bridge shines: “You wanna get me up and never be locked in?” The chorus is infectious – sugary sweet:

“Like sugar on my tongue

Can I steal that from you?

Like sugar on my tongue

Can I steal before I go?”

Ultimately, “Sugar On My Tongue” is a naughty little bop from Tyler, The Creator, who never seems to have a shortage of creativity.

3. Kali Uchis, “Sugar! Honey! Love!”

“Swear at this point, I’ve seen it all,”
Grammy-winning R&B/Latin singer/songwriter Kali Uchis sings in the first verse of “Sugar! Honey! Love!”.  She continues singing, honestly and sincerely, “So, nothing shocks me anymore / Sick and tired of betrayal, tell me, who can I trust?” Oh, snap! In the second track from her 2025 album, Sincerely, she recollects and reflects on life, love, and trauma. In the second verse, she acknowledges the past but also turns the page: “Every day was gray, you put color back to my world / Sugar honey, you gave me so much more to live for.”

Uchis penned “Sugar! Honey! Love!” and produced it with The Outfit. This is a song that floats along – it hypnotizes you. It begins with a silky smooth intro.  The musical backdrop is calm, chill, cool, and collected. The sound is incredibly sophisticated, featuring gorgeous guitars, keys, and strings, as well as prominent bass and a solid groove from the drums.  Uchis delivers lovely vocals. She sounds as cool as a cucumber for most of the song. Does she break a sweat? Barely, if at all! The chorus, the centerpiece, soars as Uchis acknowledges her come-up, which is authentic, meaningful, and thoughtful.

“And I did all my time for a crime that wasn’t mine

Made it out alive, now I’m letting the sun

Shine on me and my sweet sugar honey love

Shine all your light to this world, sugar, honey, love.”

Ultimately, “Sugar! Honey! Love!” is a fabulous gem from Kali Uchis. Her expressive vocal performance, honest delivery, and vulnerable lyricism shine.

4. Keaton Savage, “Sugar is Sweet”

“Sugar is Sweet” » Wimpy » 2024

Keaton Savage, Sugar is Sweet [📷: Wimpy]“Your sugar’s always sweet / You’re still no good for me / But I keep you on repeat / Selfish little thing.” That is a meaningful and relatable statement. Perhaps the physical attributes are ‘on-point’ – the sex is giving – but that doesn’t mean the relationship is. Keaton Savage ‘eats’ on “Sugar is Sweet”, a sexy-sounding song that he characterizes as a song ‘about finally leaving a toxic relationship…’ Did Savage stay away from the sugar? No, hence why he ‘proceeded to give it fiftyleven more chances lol.’ It seems silly, but it’s not far-fetched (“I’m tracing back the stale crumbs / I scattered on the ground”). Savage, Prince Will, Tim K, and Alana D penned this reflective joint.  Tim K and Morris TV produced. The musical accompaniment is the sugar honey iced tea: colorful keys (Tim K), a robust bass line (Lucas/Heaven), and a slow but steady groove (Morris TV).

“Why’s it feel too sweet when it’s bad for you?” Because the pleasure, at least in given moments, seems to atone for the toxicity. Many times, bomb sex and intimacy feel too irresistible to give up, even if you’re subjecting yourself to emotional abuse that shouldn’t be worth the D.  Savage is self-aware – “I’ve fallen in too quickly / I need to be alone” – but even exiting any situation, including an uncomfortable one, can be arduous. Continuing in the chorus of this celestial, compound duple, R&B slow jam, Keaton musters up the courage to tell his ex, “I’ll leave you to your misery / I finally let you go / So, baby if you miss me / Then listen to this song.” Accompanied by a top-notch backdrop, Keaton sounds amazing.  His vocals are expressive, gorgeous, nuanced, and sensual. His ad-libs are incredible, and his vocal runs are impeccable.  Upping the ante are the warm background vocals that support his authentic and vulnerable lead. Alana D understood the assignment as the vocal engineer 💯! Ultimately, “Sugar is Sweet” gives off those sensual vibes but rightfully exits a bad situation: “And I’m sorry, but baby, this is how it ends.”

5. Julien Baker & TORRES, “Sugar in the Tank”

Julien Baker & TORRES, Sugar in the Tank [📷: Julien Baker & TORRES / Matador]

“I love you all the way to hell and back / I love you tied up on the train tracks.”
Julien Baker is an incredible singer/songwriter, period.  Once again, the Grammy winner works her magic with the single, “Sugar in the Tank”.  She collaborates with another talented singer/songwriter, TORRES (Mackenzie Scott).  They form the formidable duo Julien Baker & TORRES! Baker and Scott penned the epic highlight from their 2025 album, Send A Prayer My Way. Baker, Scott, and Sarah Tudzin produced it. Baker plays multiple instruments in the track (guitars, banjo, mandolin, and keys) while TORRES also plays guitars (both acoustic and electric).

“Sugar in the Tank” opens sensationally with rhythmic guitar and pedal steel that establish a country aesthetic. The Hammond organ, fiddle, and banjo craft the song’s rich sound. Baker sings clearly and beautifully in the first verse: “I love you deadly as a heart attack / I love you halfway in a paper sack.” Torres joins in the chorus:

“I love you swimming upstream in a flash flood

Wondering when I’m gonna drown

Picking up steam on the off-ramp

Getting the hell out of downtown

Let you be the chain that keeps me

Closer to the ground

I love you all of the ways

That I know how.”

The duo exhibits excellent vocal chemistry. Baker follows with a brief but potent second verse: “I love you all the way / Down to the last drag / I’ll love you strung out on the drying rack.” A lovely instrumental interlude follows the second chorus, led by a sweet guitar solo. The final chorus, a repeat of the second, follows the interlude, concluding the delightful “Sugar in the Tank”.  Julien Baker and TORRES deliver a strong debut single as a duo.

6. SG Lewis, “Sugar” (Ft. Shygirl)

SG Lewis, “Sugar” (Ft. Shygirl) [📷: Jasmine Music Limited t/a PMR / Universal Music Operations Limited]

“I never needed much, but I know now / What I finally love is so raw.”
Noted. “Sugar on my lips like the rain again / Shadow of you touch got me feeling / Sugar…” In the fittingly titled “Sugar”, English singer, songwriter, and producer SG Lewis (Samuel George Lewis) collaborates with queer English singer/DJ Shygirl (Blane Muise). Muise serves as the vocalist on this electronic pop/dance record. Goodman, Muise, and TEED (Orlando Higginbottom) penned “Sugar,” while Lewis and TEED produced it.

“I’m the reason, if you are the sun / Please don’t give up on me / You’re the only one.” Oh, the feels! Besides sugary sweet lyrics and rich vocals by Shygirl, “Sugar” features sleek production. Making the musical backdrop incredibly striking are the usual suspects: colorful keys, bright, dizzying synths, and a thumping beat that anchors.  Beyond those memorable, sentimental lyrics – “I think all the little things you do are all about me / I know you want me, I want you too / Or so it seems” – the melodies Shygirl brings to life are tuneful. No over-analysis is necessary when it comes to “Sugar”. True to its title, the song sounds incredibly sweet – filled with glucose! Is it saccharine? Not in the least!

7. LANY, “Sugar & Cinnamon”

A beautiful blur » Sunset Garden » 2023

LANY, A beautiful blur [📷: Sunset Garden]

“Black Harley Davidsons, sugar and cinnamon / Pick up the pieces of my heart, fall in love again.”
In the context of the song, “Sugar & Cinnamon” by LANY (Paul Klein and Jack Goss), both sugar and cinnamon are key ingredients! Lyrically, however, neither is mentioned much in the third track from their 2023 LP, a beautiful blur.  Instead, Klein focuses on life and living, even when things are crummy.  In the second verse, he sings, “And when I lose the high, I know it’s okay to cry / Everybody does sometimes.” Facts, Paul, facts.

The chorus of “Sugar & Cinnamon” speaks to life’s ups and downs but embraces positivity:

“There will be days you can’t catch a break

The sun is stuck behind the clouds

There will be times when you lose your light (Times)

But don’t you let it get you down (No)

We’re here right now

We’re here right now.”

Again, facts! Things are imperfect, and some goals have yet to be achieved but don’t give in or give up – continue to live!  Don’t get in your head! Besides the uplifting lyrics and easygoing, respectable vocals from Paul, the sound of “Sugar & Cinnamon” is a win.  LANY and Mike Crossey produced this gem. It’s a smooth brand of pop/rock running north of three-and-a-half minutes. A key change toward the end also ups the ante – increases that sugar and cinnamon significantly.

8. St. Vincent, “Sugarboy”

Sugarboy, I’m in need / How I wish for somethin’ sweet.”
Oh yeah, St. Vincent (Annie Clark).  The Grammy-winning alternative musician continues singing, “Sugarboy, I am weak / Got a crush on tragedy.” “Sugarboy” ranks among the most fun songs from Masseduction, the 2017 album by Clark. While it’s fun, particularly with its chants of “boys” and “girls,” there’s also a bigger social, sexual message.  Notably, in the second verse, it’s sugargirl in place of sugarboy (“Sugargirl, dissolve in me / Got a crush from kicked-in teeth”). Arguably, Clark speaks on her own sexuality, taking on the role of boys liking girls, and/or she’s simply suggesting that stereotypical gender roles are archaic.  In the chorus, she sings:

“I am a lot like you (Boys)

I am alone like you (Girls)

I am a lot like you (Boys)

I am alone like you.”

Regardless of the specific message, Clark unleashed a surefire gem with its exciting, rhythmic musical backdrop and her assertive, playful vocal performance.

9. ElyOtto, “SugarCrash!”

“Sugar Crash” » Otto Dynamite Ltd. / RCA » 2020

ElyOtto, SugarCrash [📷: Otto Dynamite Ltd. / RCA]

“I’m on a sugar crash, I ain’t got no fuckin’ cash / Maybe I should take a bath, cut my fuckin’ brain in half.”
Oh, wow! Canadian transgender hyperpop musician ElyOtto (Elliott Platt) is assertive from the beginning of “SugarCrash!”.  He continues singing in the chorus of this fun and quirky self-penned and self-produced hyperpop record, “I’m not lonely, just a bit tired of this fuckin’ shit / Nothin’ that I write can make me feel good.” Oh, snap!

When “SugarCrash!” arrived, ElyOtto was a teenager.  This sub-one-and-a-half-minute track is Gen-Z music.  The production sounds exuberant – who doesn’t love bright, vibrant synths?! Beyond the synths, the banging, pummeling drums excel.  Also, equally important to the sound and vibe are the pitched-up vocals by ElyOtto.  They sound even more potent as he drops profane, f-bomb-fueled lyrics. In the verse, he asserts, “Feelin’ shitty in my bed, didn’t take my fuckin’ meds / Hyperpop up in my ears, everything just disappears.” The angst! At least, he acknowledges, “Got the rest of my life to fuck around / Got the rest of my life to make sound.”

Notably, in 2021, a remix featuring Grammy-winning pop singer/songwriter Kim Petras and Curtis Waters (Abhinav Bastakoti) was released.  In the remix, like ElyOtto, Petras asserts, “Feel fuckin’ crazy, I just wanna / Feel good.” As for Curtis Waters, he made himself the victim, is dealing with addiction (“Got me on these meds, they sayin’ I’m really sick”), and makes it clear, “I ain’t comin’ home.” As for ElyOtto, he adds in the outro, “I’m like a little kid in a sweet shop / Pretty packages, I can never make it stop / It’s like a nightmare, I can never live it down / So, all I really know how to do is make sound.” “SugarCrash!” in all versions is better heard than explained, honestly!

10. Sheena Easton, “Sugar Walls”

A Private Heaven » RT Industries » 1984

Sheena Easton, A Private Heaven [📷: RT Industries]

“Blood races to your private parts / Lets me know there’s a fire.”
Ooh-wee, Sheena Easton! “You can’t fight passion when passion is hot / Temperatures rise inside my sugar walls.” Wow! “Sugar Walls” ended up being one of seven top 10 hits for Easton, peaking at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. “Sugar Walls,” which appears on her 1984 album, A Private Heaven, reached its peak position in 1985.  As the lyrics suggest, “Sugar Walls” is a sexual song, specifically referencing the vagina. It should not shock you that Prince penned this risqué pop record, where Easton asserts, “Come spend the night inside my sugar walls” (chorus) and “It’s raining tonight / Heaven on Earth inside my sugar walls” (verse three).

These days, songs about/referencing female private parts are far less taboo. Back then, a song referencing the vagina was utterly shocking.  No, the song never gets specific about anatomy, but clearly, female pleasure is the modus operandi.  Naturally, “Sugar Walls” experienced its bans due to sexual content, including landing a spot on the infamous  Filthy 15, songs targeted by the PMRC or Parents Music Resource Center.  Given the fact that Prince wrote the song, his reward was appearing twice on the list.  C’mon, we all know it was “Darling Nikki” that made Tipper Gore feel some type of way! Regardless, as stated earlier, “Sugar Walls” gave Easton another top-10 hit, and no controversy ultimately inhibited her career.

11. Def Leppard, “Pour Some Sugar on Me”

Hysteria » Bludgeon Riffola Limited / Mercury » 1987

“Step inside / Walk this way / You and me, babe / Hey, hey!”
Hey, hey, indeed! English rock band Def Leppard dropped a surefire rock juggernaut with “Pour Some Sugar On Me”. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” is the fifth track from the band’s massively popular, diamond-certified, fourth studio album, Hysteria, released in 1987. “Sugar,” of course, ranks among Def Leppard’s most beloved and renowned songs. It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. That’s not kind of a big deal, that IS a big deal! In 2025, the single was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Hell yeah, rock on 🤘! Def Leppard (Joe Elliott, Phil Collen, Steve Clark, Richard Savage, and Rick Allen) penned “Sugar” alongside producer Robert John Lange.

“Pour Some Sugar on Me” features a distinct, personality-laden spoken introduction, excerpted earlier. The tone is set! Beyond the stirring intro, Joe Elliott delivers plenty of assertive, playful lead vocals. “Love is like a bomb, baby, come, get it on,” he sings in the first verse, adding the likes of, “Livin’ like a lover with a radar phone,” “Demolition woman, can I be your man?”, and “Sometime, anytime, sugar me sweet / Little miss innocent sugar me, yeah.” Oh, snap! The vibes are similar in the second verse are sweet, too! “Sweet dream, saccharine, loosen up.” Word.  Of course, the centerpiece is the big, anthemic, stadium chorus:

“Pour some sugar on me

Ooh, in the name of love

Pour some sugar on me

Come on, fire me up

Pour your sugar on me

Oh, I can’t get enough.”

Joe doesn’t stop there, either.  In the post-chorus, he’s “hot, stick sweet,” while in the bridge, he naughtily states, “You got the peaches, I got the cream,” later asking, “Do you take sugar? / One lump or two.” Woo!

Interestingly, the verses are based on the key of C#, which is the relative minor key of E, on which the chorus is based.  However, something that makes “Pour Some Sugar On Me” distinct is the fact that Def Leppard plays with C# major, which makes the switch to E major in the chorus feel unexpected.  Beyond the powerful singing, unforgettable lyrics, and thought-provoking harmonic scheme/music theory 🤓,  “Pour Some Sugar On Me” shines instrumentally. Rick Allen serves up mammoth-like drums that hit you right in the chest.  Phil Collen and Steve Clark bring it with their mean-sounding, souped-up guitars. The riffs kick ass and take names. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” is a classic through and through.  It’s a crowd-pleasing rock joint that never grows old or stale.  Hard to believe that a band as iconic as Def Leppard has never received a Grammy nomination 👀. Let that sink in…

12. The Archies, “Sugar, Sugar”

Everything’s Archie » Calendar » 1969

The Archies, Everything's Archie [📷: Calendar]

“Sugar / Ah, honey, honey / You are my candy girl / And I’ve been wanting you.”
Bubblegum pop music at its finest, folks, courtesy of The Archies! The Archies were an American fictional rock band associated with the Archies Comics 👀.  Even being fictional, “Sugar, Sugar”, the ninth track from the band’s 1969 album, Everything’s Archie, was a big-time hit. “Sugar, Sugar” not only topped the pop charts in the US, but worldwide.  The single was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1969.

“Sugar, Sugar” features smooth, easy-going vocals. Adding to the sweetness are selective vocal harmonies. The sound is groovy, exemplifying quintessential late 1960s vibes.  Also sugary sweet are the melodies, which are tuneful to the nth degree. Going back to the bubblegum vibes, the lyrics are innocent and inoffensive. In the first verse, The Archies sing, “I just can’t believe the loveliness of loving you / (I just can’t believe it’s true).” In the second verse, they add, “When I kissed you, girl, I knew how sweet a kiss could be.” The chorus, excerpted earlier and appearing at the beginning of the song, is infectious; you won’t be able to get it unstuck from your head. Later in the track, the vocals have a bit more edge, as The Archies urge us to “pour a little sugar on it, honey.” D-d-d-damn.  I know, I know, The Archies would’ve never said damn.  All in all, “Sugar, Sugar” is an unforgettable late ‘60s pop classic.  Is it too sweet? Probably, but, ultimately, it’s enjoyable and inoffensive.

13. Bessie Smith, “Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl”

The Best of Bessie Smith » Sony Music Entertainment » 2015

Bessie Smith, The Best of Bessie Smith [📷: Sony Music Entertainment]

“Tired of bein’ lonely, tired of bein’ blue / I wished I had some good man, to tell my troubles to.”
That’s understandable, Bessie Smith (1894? – 1937). Those lyrics aren’t scandalous from her 1931 song, “Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl”.  Originally recorded by Smith, this blues classic was written by Tim Brymn, Dally Small, and Clarence Williams. Smith is accompanied by piano. She ‘brings her A Game,’ performing with her beloved, commanding, and robust vocals. Her performance is playful in this flirty sex song. So, where is the sex, you ask? Yes, early on, Smith states she desires a man to cure her loneliness, but she doesn’t get graphic about it.  That, my friends, is only the ‘tip’ of the iceberg 🤭.  Even though the singer seeks emotional fulfillment from a partner,  “Sugar” still has its fair share of naughty moments.  The desire for physical fulfillment is evident, and the sexual innuendo is lit. “I need a little sugar in my bowl / I need a little hot dog between my rolls,” Smith sings, continuing, “You gettin’ different, I’ve been told / Move your finger, drop something in my bowl.”  The bowl 🥣 that Smith is talking about is not found in the kitchen… it’s anatomical 😈.  Furthermore, that “little hot dog” 🌭 isn’t stored in the refrigerator 😈 🍆.  She wants it, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what it is!

“I need a little steam-heat on my floor

Maybe I can fix things up, so they’ll go

Get off your knees, I can’t see what you’re drivin’ at

It’s dark down there looks like a snake!”

Da-yum! “Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl” is double entendre at its finest.  Dirty blues exemplified!
