1. The Kid LAROI & Quavo, โ€œSLOW IT DOWNโ€

โ€œSLOW IT DOWNโ€ // Columbia // 2024

The Kid LAROI & Quavo, SLOW IT DOWN [๐Ÿ“ท: Columbia]โ€œI met you on Monday / Fucked you on Tuesday / Wednesday, tellinโ€™ all your friends Iโ€™m your new baeโ€ฆโ€ It doesnโ€™t take long for The Kid LAROI (Charlton Howard) to set the tone on โ€œSLOW IT DOWNโ€. ย He brings ample โ€˜rizz,โ€™ smoothness, and swagger.ย  His point to this girl: โ€œYouโ€™re moving too fast, huh / Iโ€™m tryna make it last.โ€ Word.ย  Howard is joined by a fellow Grammy nominee, Quavo, as they interpolate a rap classic, โ€œSlow Motionโ€ by Juvenile. โ€œSLOW IT DOWNโ€ is anchored by a sick beat.ย  The production (Starrah, Waves, and Dopamine), is a big selling point. Still, it is the vocalists that make this a bop.ย  The melodies sung by The Kid LAROI are among his most tuneful. Despite being smooth, heโ€™s young and unapologetic. โ€œThursday, same thing we did on Tuesday,โ€ he continues naughtily in the first verse, adding, โ€œFriday, let me hit that motherfucker my way.โ€ Damn! He reappears in the third verse where theyโ€™ve been โ€œFuckinโ€™ all week / You wanna have a drink, have sex on the beach.โ€ Howard also performs much of the chorus, emphasizing that โ€œslow motion,โ€ while also getting the assist from Quavo (โ€œShe donโ€™t know how to act / Keep throwinโ€™ that back / Ass fat, waist snatchedโ€). Quavo brings a melodic flow in his guest verse: ย โ€œFuck the first class, Iโ€™m on a jet smokinโ€™ (Oh) / Let me hit it on the island, she got me wildinโ€™ (Who).โ€ All told, The Kid LAROI and Quavo make a formidable team on the fun and sexed-up โ€œSLOW IT DOWNโ€.

2. Tate McRae, โ€œItโ€™s ok Iโ€™m okโ€

So Close To What // RCA // 2025

Tate McRae, So Close To What [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]โ€œHe ainโ€™t just a pretty-faced talker /โ€ฆ Youโ€™re seeinโ€™ one-sided / You got him right now.โ€ Oh, snap, Tate McRae! The Gen-Z musician warns her exโ€™s new girlfriend to beware in โ€œItโ€™s ok Iโ€™m okโ€, a single from her 2025 album, So Close To What. In the pre-chorus, she makes it clear she doesnโ€™t miss him because heโ€™s no good! Her exact words: โ€œTake him, heโ€™s yours.โ€ McRae, Ilya, Ryan Tedder, and Savan Kotecha penned the single. Ilya produced it. โ€œItโ€™s ok Iโ€™m okโ€ is relatively brief.ย  With its quick pace and simple message, thatโ€™s enough time for Tate McRae to convey her points.ย  In the second verse, she drops an f-bomb (โ€œWas such a romantic (Romantic) / You got me like, โ€˜Fuck thatโ€™โ€). In the chorus, which is uncomplicated save for its rhythm, she asserts, โ€œItโ€™s okay, Iโ€™m okay, had him in the first place / itโ€™s okay, Iโ€™m okayโ€ฆโ€ The songwriting isnโ€™t game-changing but works sufficiently. Beyond the lyrics, the accompaniment thrives off a sweet percussive groove โ€“ the beat bangs.ย  Also, the minimalist vibes are successful, specifically tasty keyboard and synths.ย  The melodies are rhythmic, with the pre-chorus featuring an interesting jump between octaves.ย  McRae is feisty and playful with her vocal performance, which suits the theme of this enjoyable, mostly inoffensive song (looking at you, f-bomb ๐Ÿ˜‰).

3. Snoop Dogg, โ€œDrop It Like Itโ€™s Hotโ€ (Ft. Pharrell Williams)

R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece // Geffen // 2004ย

Snoop Dogg, R&G: Rhythm & Gangsta (The Masterpiece) [๐Ÿ“ท: Geffen]โ€œSnoop / Snoop!โ€ ย Ooh wee! Snoop Dogg (Calvin Broadus) earned his first no. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with โ€œDrop It Like Itโ€™s Hotโ€. The 16-time Grammy-nominated rapper (who should have won at least one) got a huge lift from the production of The Neptunes. ย Beyond the distinct, minimalist accompaniment crafted by the duo, Pharrell Williams serves as a featured guest. 20 years old, โ€œDrop It Like Itโ€™s Hotโ€ remains fresh, and well deserving of the title of a rap classic.ย  With innovative production and two big personalities collaborating (Snoop and Pharrell), magic was inevitable.

The chorus, first and foremost, is the section to beat regarding lyrics:

โ€œWhen the pimpโ€™s in the crib, ma

(Drop it like itโ€™s hot, drop it like itโ€™s hot, drop it like itโ€™s hot)

When the pigs try to get at you

(Park it like itโ€™s hot, park it like itโ€™s hot, park it like itโ€™s hot)

And if a nigga get a attitude

(Pop it like itโ€™s hot, pop it like itโ€™s hot, pop it like itโ€™s hot)

I got the Rollie on my arm and Iโ€™m pourinโ€™ Chandon

And I roll the best weed, ’cause I got it goinโ€™ on.โ€

Gah-day-um! One of the best, most infectious hooks, hands down.ย  Beyond the hook, which ignited the popularity of the phrase โ€˜drop it like itโ€™s hot,โ€™ Snoop says his fair share of memorable lines. โ€œI keep a blue flag hanginโ€™ out my backside / But only on the left side, yeah, thatโ€™s the Crip side,โ€ he raps in the second verse, referencing his gang affiliation. In the third verse, the former pimp asserts, โ€œIโ€™m a bad boy with a lotta hoes / Drive my own cars and wear my own clothes.โ€ Translation: heโ€™s rich, bi-otch! Pharrell also deserves his flowers for the first verse, confidently and raunchily rapping, โ€œEligible bachelor, million dollar beat / Thatโ€™s whiter than whatโ€™s slippinโ€™ down your throat.โ€ Oh, snap! No deep analysis is necessary for โ€œDrop It Like Itโ€™s Hotโ€, one of the best rap songs to come out of the 2000s. SNOOP!

4. Cissy Houston, โ€œThink It Overโ€

Think It Over // Private Stock // 1978

Cissy Houston, Think It Over [๐Ÿ“ท: Private Stock]โ€œSome people say youโ€™ve been messing around.โ€ Uh-ohโ€ฆ โ€œIโ€™m not too sure, but youโ€™re just not the same / We got to find us a way.โ€ Oh, snap! Cissy Houston (1933 โ€“ 2024) was not only the mother of a late icon (Whitney Houston) but was also a gifted vocalist. In 1978, she commenced her album, Think It Over, with the scintillating disco bop โ€œThink It Overโ€.ย  โ€œThink It Overโ€ was written by Houston, Alvin Fields, and Michael Zager.ย  While โ€œThink It Overโ€ didnโ€™t earn her pop success, it impacted the R&B and dance charts. โ€œThink It Overโ€ features a funky instrumental that is idiomatic of the disco-infused sound of the late 1970s. The accompaniment is groovy, while the horn riffs are exuberant and punchy. Cissy delivers commanding, dynamic, and energetic lead vocals.ย  Further providing a lift are infectious, tuneful melodies. โ€œThink It Overโ€ is catchy. Additionally, the background vocals singing the titular lyric up the ante.ย  What is it that Cissy wants him to think over? Per the chorus:

โ€œThink it over

Before you do something to tear us apart

Think it over

All this talk is breaking my heart

Think it over

Before you go out and do it again

Think it over

Just get together before it all ends

Think it over, think it over.โ€

So, he better remember how good the love shared is before he goes and messes up a good thing! Cissy showcases a forgiving spirit: โ€œIโ€™m not too proud to forgive and forget / But baby, what about you?โ€ Word.ย  โ€œThink It Overโ€ didnโ€™t get its just due as a soul classic but it deserved far more recognition.ย  Well-sung, well-produced, and well-written, this disco joint is the sugar honey iced tea.

5. Ruel, โ€œMade It Awkwardโ€

โ€œMade it Awkwardโ€ // Recess / Giant Music // 2024

Ruel, Made It Awkward [๐Ÿ“ท: Recess / Giant Music]According to the handsome and talented Ruel (Ruel van Dijk), โ€œNothing good ever comes after midnight / When youโ€™re drunk, and you pick up the phone.โ€ He sings these memorable, prudent lyrics on โ€œMade it Awkwardโ€. Van Dijk, M-Phazes, and Nick Long penned โ€œMade It Awkward.โ€ M-Phazes, Elias Danielson and Theodore Lee produced. Although awkwardness rears its ugly head,ย  there is nothing awkward regarding the enjoyability of this three-minute pop song.

โ€œMade It Awkwardโ€ features colorful musical accompaniment with its signature โ€˜pop/rockโ€™ drums, synths, and guitar. ย Ruel serves up warm, nuanced vocals. His ad-libs are fabulous, yielding soulfulness.ย  Both his middle and upper register (falsetto) are impressive. Likewise, the vocal production is warm.ย  The awkward lyrics are presented via tuneful melodies during the verse and chorus. Thematically, it encompasses matters of the heart, with van Dijk embarrassing himself: โ€œKeep my head down when I see her at Old Mates / And I sit at the bar alone / Just pretending I donโ€™t even notice sheโ€™s there / But sheโ€™s the only reason I go.โ€ There is a great contrast in the second verse, where the drum groove drops out, yet the rhythmic identity of the song is retained as he imparts his lonely, longing bar experience.ย  The centerpiece, however, is the chorus:

โ€œWhy did I call her, why did I bother?

I guess she didnโ€™t wanna hear that I want her

I painted a picture of us at the altar

Thought I could have made her mine

But I just made it awkward.โ€

Sadly, it works out that way sometimes, Ruel. โ€œMade It Awkwardโ€ is another welcome addition to the Gen-Z Australian singer/songwriterโ€™s music catalog.

6. Melanie Fiona, โ€œIt Kills Meโ€

The Bridge // UMG Recordings, Inc. // 2009

Melanie Fiona, The Bridge [๐Ÿ“ท: UMG Recordings, Inc.]According to Grammy-winning Canadian R&B singer Melanie Fiona, โ€œ[I have] problems when you donโ€™t come home at night / But when you do, you always start a fight.โ€ Oh, the plight of love is at work on Fionaโ€™s breakthrough song, โ€œIt Kills Me.โ€ The Grammy-nominated song for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance is the penultimate track from Fionaโ€™s debut album, The Bridge. Jay Fenix and Andrea Martin produced the neo-soul ballad. It samples โ€œHey There Lonely Girlโ€ by The Softones. ย In the first verse, the dynamic, soulful singer adds, โ€œBut I canโ€™t be alone / I need you to come on home / I know youโ€™re messinโ€™ around / But who the hell else is gonna hold me down.โ€ That is a situation! In the second verse, Fiona struggles with how to handle her cheating man โ€“ โ€œShould I grab his cell, call this chick up / Start some shh, then hang up / Or should I be a lady / Ooh, maybe, โ€˜cause I wanna have his babies.โ€ The verses are sensational, and Melanie sounds delightful as she decides how to navigate this mess.ย  The best moment, the crรจme de la crรจme, is the chorus.ย  Not only does her angelic voice continue its shine, but sheโ€™s supported by gorgeous, harmonized background vocals.

โ€œIโ€™ve gotta be out my mind

To think itโ€™s gonna work this time

A part of me wants to leave

But the other side still believes

And it kills me (Oh), to know how much I really love you (So much)

So much, I wanna ooh-ooh-ooh

To you-hoo-hoo.โ€

It wasnโ€™t a good situation between Melanie Fiona and her man, but this songโ€ฆ EPIC.

7. ian, โ€œFigure It Outโ€

Valedictorian // Dogdog // 2024

ian, Valedictorian [๐Ÿ“ท: Dogdog]โ€œThe way that Iโ€™m drivinโ€™ this Wraith, they โ€˜bout to put me on suicide watch (Put me on suicide watch) / Canโ€™t choose what color Iโ€™m feelinโ€™ today, thank God itโ€™s a two-tone watch (Two-tone watch).โ€ Barsโ€ฆ or notโ€ฆ Anyways, โ€œFigure It Outโ€ is the 11th track on Valedictorian, the debut mixtape by Gen-Z rapper, ian. Formerly a college rugby player before dropping out to focus on his rap career, ian doesnโ€™t say much in the brief โ€œFigure It Out.โ€ Backed by trap production by sxprano, he raps about superficial things โ€“ nothing transcendent. Case in point: โ€œThese Japanese garments is handmade, whole body covered in shit I canโ€™t say.โ€ Also, I have my doubts that he โ€œMake the whole trap jump right now like a motherfuckinโ€™ parlay hit, yeah.โ€ One of the ear-catching lyrics appears at the end of the chorus: โ€œMy big brother like Marshawn Lynch, heโ€™ll run through somebody.โ€ Of course, Marshawn Lynch makes a cameo in the Lyrical Lemonade music video.ย  Ian has been accused of cultural appropriation and being an industry plant. Is it fair? You be the judge.ย

8. 21 Savage & Summer Walker, โ€œprove itโ€

American dream // Slaughter Gang, LLC / Epic // 2024ย

21 Savage, American dream [๐Ÿ“ท: Slaughter Gang, LLC / Epic]โ€œIโ€™m pourinโ€™ up Wocky in Greece / I came a long way from the east / She leavinโ€™ her cream on the sheets / My brother say he want a niece.โ€ Damn! โ€œProve itโ€ is the 11th track from American dream, the third studio album by Grammy-winning rapper, 21 Savage. Produced by Coupe, Tye Beats, and Isaiah Brown, a rich R&B sample fuels the production โ€“ โ€œYou Are My Joy (Interlude)โ€ by Faith Evans.ย  Besides the sample, โ€œprove itโ€ is anchored by a tight beat.ย  Notably, it has a romantic vibe โ€“ as romantic as a rap sex song can be. 21 Savage is smoother in his delivery but not โ€˜softโ€™ โ€“ heโ€™s still โ€˜rough around the edgesโ€™: โ€œFuck what you bring to the table / โ€˜Cause bae you the table, Iโ€™m eatinโ€™, letโ€™s dine.โ€ย  Yum, yum ๐Ÿ˜‹ ๐Ÿคค! He gets a lift from Summer Walker, who provides sweet vocals in the chorus and outro.ย  โ€œYou know you my baby, you know you my twin,โ€ she sings, โ€œIf they disrespect me, then itโ€™s cominโ€™ to an end / If them niggas play with me, we know that you gonโ€™ sin.โ€ The final line of the chorus is a surefire highlight: โ€œI pray these hoes donโ€™t make me have to prove it.โ€ Word.

9. The Weeknd, โ€œEarned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)โ€

The Weeknd Beauty Behind the Madnessย // Republic //ย 2015

The Weeknd, Beauty Behind the Madness [๐Ÿ“ท: Republic]โ€œIโ€™ma care for you, you, you, you.โ€ Woo! One of the sexiest, steamiest, and sultriest songs of 2015 came by way of โ€œEarned It (Shades of Grey)โ€ by The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye). โ€œEarned Itโ€ was featured on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack and reprised on his Grammy-winning album,ย Beauty Behind the Madness. The compound-duple slow jam was inescapable and simply irresistible in 2015 and still feels awesome approaching a decade later.

โ€œSo, I love when you call unexpected / โ€˜Cause I hate when the momentโ€™s expectedโ€ฆโ€ The Canadian R&B singerโ€™s sweet tenor rises above a retro-soul backdrop, produced by Stephen Moccioย and Jason โ€œDaHealaโ€ Quenneville. ย Among the bright spots of the production are the moody, dynamic strings โ€“ quite the vibe.ย  โ€œEarned Itโ€ definitely plays to The Weekndโ€™s strengths: a ripe falsetto and a heaping dose of passion. ย The centerpiece of this steamy joint is the chorus:

โ€œโ€˜Cause girl, you’re perfect (Girl, youโ€™re perfect)

Youโ€™re always worth it (Always worth it)

And you deserve it (And you deserve it)

The way you work it (The way you work it)

โ€˜Cause girl, you earned it, yeah (Earned it)

Girl, you earned it, yeah.โ€

With awesome production, top-notch vocals, and dedicated, sexy lyrics making โ€œEarned It (Shades of Grey)โ€ an epic, surefire vibe, you canโ€™t fail to mention the NSFW music video. is a surefire vibe. The Weeknd is at his best when the carnal is involved.

10. 2 Chainz, โ€œItโ€™s a Vibeโ€ (Ft. Ty Dolla $ign, Trey Songz & Jhenรฉ Aiko)

Pretty Girls Like Trap Music ย // Def Jam // 2017

2 Chainz, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music [๐Ÿ“ท: Def Jam]โ€œThatโ€™s a vibeโ€ฆ / She wanna vibe, yeahโ€ฆโ€ 2 Chainz strikes gold on โ€œItโ€™s a Vibeโ€, the crowning achievement of his 2017 album, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music.ย  Yes, it would be safe to say that โ€œItโ€™s a Vibeโ€ is indeed a vibe, even if 2 Chainz and company eschew depth and substance ultimately. Ty Dolla $ign and Trey Songz perfectly amplify the sexual intent of the number.ย  2 Chainz spends his verse rapping about money ๐Ÿ’ธ, sex ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ‘Œ, and hustling. Adding the feminine touch is Jhenรฉ Aiko, who sounds as sensual as ever in her sweetest, โ€˜cool-as-a-cucumberโ€™ voice.

11. Portugal. The Man, โ€œFeel It Stillโ€

Woodstock // Atlantic // 2017ย

Portugal. The Man, Woodstock [๐Ÿ“ท: Atlantic]โ€œCanโ€™t keep my hands to myself / Think Iโ€™ll dust โ€˜em off, put โ€˜em back up on the shelf.โ€ Okay, sure! Alternative bands can rarely tout scoring a top five pop hit on the Billboard Hot 100.โ€ฏ Portland, Oregon standouts Portugal. The Man earned those bragging rights with โ€œFeel It Stillโ€.ย  The standout from their 2017 album, Woodstock, peaked at no. 4 on the pop charts.ย  Easily one of the grooviest, most infectious, and best songs of 2017, it also earned the band the one-hit wonder label.ย  The facts, or lack of other charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100 donโ€™t lie.ย  Still, if youโ€™re going to only earn one charting single on the pop charts, wouldnโ€™t you want it to be a Grammy-winning, multiplatinum single like โ€œFeel It Stillโ€? Of course, you would!

The chorus is a huge reason for the success of โ€œFeel It Stillโ€:

โ€œOoh woo, Iโ€™m a rebel just for kicks, nowโ€ฏย

I been feeling it since 1966, nowโ€ฏย

Might be over now, but I feel it stillโ€ฏย

Ooh woo, Iโ€™m a rebel just for kicks, nowโ€ฏย

Let me kick it like itโ€™s 1986, nowโ€ฏย

Might be over now, but I feel it still.โ€โ€ฏย

Ooh, woo, indeed! The production (John Hill & Asa Taccone) is crisp and clear ๐Ÿ’ช.โ€ฏ Frontman John Gourley delivers sensational, light, airy, and agile high-pitched vocals.โ€ฏ Reminiscing rarely comes off as excellent as it does on โ€œFeel It Stillโ€. Notably, Gourley makes various references throughout the song including politics, rebelliousness, and his daughter (โ€œGot another mouth to feed / Leave it to the babysitter, mama, call the gravediggerโ€).ย  One-hit wonder it may be, but itโ€™s an epic one, PERIOD. โ€ฏย

12. The Weather Girls, โ€œItโ€™s Raining Menโ€

Success // CBS // 1982

The Weather Girls, Success [๐Ÿ“ท: CBS]โ€œItโ€™s raining men! Hallelujah! / Itโ€™s raining men! Amen!โ€ HALLELUJAH ๐Ÿ‘!!! Imagine that chiseled, hunky men are falling from the skies โ€“ a gift from heavenโ€“ just ready to be โ€œBooโ€™d Upโ€ with various โ€œProspectsโ€. Oh, the joystick ๐Ÿ•น๏ธ action! The Weather Girlsโ€™ โ€œItโ€™s Raining Menโ€ is an iconic, joyful gay anthem based on its infectious, lustful chorus! Long before Todrick Hall informed us โ€œItโ€™s raining fellas, itโ€™s raining fellasโ€, those Weather Girls (Izora Armstead and Martha Wash) gave us a legendary forecast in 1982. A Success? Well, surprisingly, only moderately to the tune of no. 46 on the Billboard Hot 100, but hey, the charts had to be hating on this surefire post-disco bop, penned by Paul Jabara and Paul Shaffer back then!

โ€œGod bless Mother Nature, sheโ€™s a single woman too

She took off to heaven and she did what she had to do

She taught every angel

She rearranged the sky

So that each and every woman could find her perfect guy.โ€

Perhaps Mother Nature is a single woman, but she could be anybody these days, and with how beloved โ€œItโ€™s Raining Menโ€ is within the gay community, Iโ€™m not so sure Mother Nature isnโ€™t a member of the LGBTQ+ community! Regardless, with โ€œHumidityโ€ฆ risingโ€ and โ€œbarometerโ€™s getting low,โ€ โ€œFor the first time in history / Itโ€™s gonna start raining men.โ€ To that, again I say, HALLELUJAH ๐Ÿ‘!!!

13. Tavares, โ€œCheck It Outโ€

Check It Out // Capitol // 1974ย

Tavares, Check It Out [๐Ÿ“ท: Capitol]โ€œIf you want someone who understands / Then things canโ€™t get uptight,โ€ Antone โ€œChubbyโ€ Tavares sings in the first verse of โ€œCheck It Outโ€.ย  The Tavares vocalist adds, โ€œIf it means anything to you / To know that I care for you / Check it out.โ€ โ€œCheck It Outโ€ is the fourth track on the Boston-based R&B collectiveโ€™s 1974 album, also titled, Check It Out.ย  Billy Osborne and Floyd Butler penned the soulful ballad. Robert Bowles produced, overseeing the ear-catching, luscious backdrop.ย  โ€œCheck It Outโ€ marked a breakthrough single for Tavares.ย  Theyโ€™d chart higher with future singles. It peaked at no. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1973 marking the beginning of their career success.

The theme and lyrics of โ€œCheck It Outโ€ are simple.ย  If you need somebody, Iโ€™m the one, the Tavares brothers sing throughout the song.ย  โ€œOhโ€ฆ surely you must know / My love will always growโ€ sums up the vibe perfectly.ย  Adding to the allure beyond compelling lead and background vocals, love-oriented lyrics, and lush production are the melodies.ย  The tuneful melodies are a perfect match for the dedicated, love-driven lyrics. โ€œThere may not be a dreary day / For you to suffer through,โ€ Tavares sings together, continuing, โ€œIf you would let me lead the way / Iโ€™d give the world to you.โ€ Girl, the thing for you to do is โ€œCheck It Outโ€, period.
