INSANO (NITRO MEGA) // Republic // 2024

Kid Cudi, INSANO (NITRO MEGA) [📷: Republic]“Insano, insano, insano boy-boy.” Word, Kid CudiINSANO is the name of the Grammy-winning rapper’s first album of 2024. However, “ILL WHAT I BLEED,” released as a single in October 2023, is the 14th track on his second album of 2024, INSANO (NITRO MEGA). Scott Mescudi – prolific in 2024! “ILL WHAT I BLEED” was produced by Mescudi, Karl Rubin, Ryan Buendia, and Jean Baptiste.  It features a banging, trap beat – the perfect accompaniment for the rapper.  As always, Kid Cudi is a vibe, with his melodic vocals and his big, confident personality.  He gasses himself up in the intro, beginning the first verse with a bang: “Here’s the picture, I’m that mister (hot, hot) / I do what I please, I keep it simple / Keep my circle with the real ones by my side.” Mic drop! In the second verse, he asserts, “Walk through fire, I’m unbreakable, legend, he’s deep / No wonder why them suckers hatin’, just ‘cause I’m me.” He puts a cap on it in the chorus:  “You don’t know / That the man that I am (Don’t know the), the ill that I bleed / That ill what I bleed.” Woo! “ILL WHAT I BLEED” = banger.

2. Andromedik, “Bleed The Same” (Ft. RANI)

“Bleed The Same” // UKF // 2024

Andromedik, Bleed the Same [📷: UKF]Belgium is in the house! DJ and producer Andromedik brings the heat and a heaping dose of unity on his single, “Bleed The Same.” The ascending drum ‘n’ bass musician doesn’t “Bleed The Same” by himself.  He enlists RANI for the assist.  RANI provides warm vocals, bringing the tuneful melodies to life.  Andromedik and RANI penned “Bleed The Same” alongside Jason Walker, Sarah Reeves, and Toby Jacob. Andromedik handles the production.  The sound is sleek to the nth degree.  The drop stands out particularly – I love the synths and programming he uses.  Focusing on the lyrics, RANI is “Done with all the fakeness / Filters on their faces / Pretty only goes so far.” WORD.  She adds, “Is it too much just to show love? / We all try our hardest / Ain’t nobody flawless / Honestly I’ve had enough.” MIC DROP! Thoughtfully penned, the lyrical section to beat is the catchy chorus:

“We could tear up the walls down

Turn this place to a ghost town

What you see is what you get now

Yeah we all bleed the same

All these voices are so loud

We can drown all the noise out

What you see is what you get now

Yeah we all bleed the same.”

“Bleed The Same” doesn’t require extensive analysis. Andromedik, assisted by RANI, drops a must-hear, dance banger.

3. Michael Jackson, “Blood on the Dance Floor”

Blood on the Dance Floor // MJJ Productions // 1997

Michael Jackson, Blood on the Dance Floor [📷: MJJ Productions]The 1990s were an interesting time for the late, great Michael Jackson.  The ‘King of Pop’ had continued success as well as controversy.  Between his ‘controversial’ 1995 album/compilation, HIStory – Past, Present and Future – Book I and his final album released during his lifetime, Invincible (2001), Jackson released the remix album, Blood on the Dance Floor (1997) led by the title track. “Blood on the Dance Floor” was a new song on the album.  “Blood” sounds like many other New Jack Swing-infused R&B joints from Jackson (it was originally set to appear on Dangerous in 1991).  Vocally, he sounds true to himself, with the usual whoops, gritty ad-libs, and ample personality.  The record is hella groovy. ‘Susie,’ whom Jackson mentions explicitly in the chorus, is something else – “Susie got your number and Susie ain’t your friend / Look who took you under with seven inches in.” Yikes!

4. CeCe Winans, “Oh The Blood of Jesus”

More Than This // Pure Springs Gospel // 2024

CeCe Winans, More Than This [📷: Pure Springs Gospel, Inc.]“Oh, the blood of Jesus! / Oh, the blood of Jesus! / Oh, the blood of Jesus! / It washes white as snow.” Amen 🙏! Hallelujah 👏 🙌! That is a big OH, CeCe Winans! Winans sings “Oh The Blood of Jesus” sublimely, backed by spiritual, choral voices. “Oh The Blood of Jesus” is the fourth track from Winans’ 2024 album, More Than This.  The traditional song is brief, clocking in under a minute and a half.  Despite the brevity, a couple of iterations of the simple lyrics are meaningful.  The message is transcendent and life changing.  Biblically, the power and significance of the blood of Jesus is mentioned in various scriptures.

5. Jon Campbell, “Ukrainian Blood”

Still Life With Motion Sickness // 7lb // 2024

Jon Campbell, Still Life With Motion Sickness [📷: 7lb]“My father’s got Ukrainian blood / Should I, should I, should I, worry more / About America and Russia’s war?” Thought-provoking lyrics from American-born singer/songwriter and visual artist, Jon Campbell.  The opening lyrics from “Ukrainian Blood”, the ninth track from the Berlin-based artist’s album, Still Life With Motion Sickness, set the tone for this socially conscious song.  Campbell composed, arranged, and produced the indie-folk cut, which sounds distinct from the opening tip.  Besides serving up superb, authentic vocals, Campbell also performs body percussion, in addition to playing colander and tambourine.  The percussion plays a key part in the sound, establishing a driving rhythm.  Also bolstering the sound of “Ukrainian Blood” is trumpet (Robin Kahl), trombone (Jan Landowski), and bass (Rosie Salvucci). The musicianship is top-notch – impressive.

The sound is a vibe, but the biggest reason why “Ukrainian Blood” is successful is the theme and lyrics. Campbell reflects on the inhumane state of the world, specifically citing his connection to the devastating situation in Ukraine.  Of course, he is NOT in the warzone: “I watch them from the safety of my phone / Can’t understand a sibling’s blood in our hands.”  Seeing devastation from pictures on a phone isn’t the same as experiencing it firsthand.  When you are part of a situation live and in person, it ‘hits different.’ Far too often, even if we, as humans find something to be horrible, we aren’t truly as affected or as outraged as we should be. In the final section of the song, he asks, “Where the hell’s our humanity? / Should I cry more for my baby niece / Or one in Yemen or Somalia / How much blood should we share before we know peace? / How much blood shall be shed before we know peace?” “Ukrainian Blood” marks an epic, must-hear number from a talented individual.

6. Conan Gray, “The Cut That Always Bleeds”

Kid Krow // Republic // 2020

Conan Gray, Kid Krow [📷: Republic]In March 2020, pop artist Conan Gray released his highly anticipated debut album, Kid Krow. Kid Krow marked a big milestone for the California-born artist, who gained attention early on as a YouTube personality. Ultimately, he’s impressive throughout the LP, showing off compelling vocal and songwriting skills. He gives us a record that’s a ‘cut above the rest,’ rather, “The Cut That Always Bleeds.” Matters of the heart fuel “The Cut That Always Bleeds.” The lyrics are darkly poetic and thoughtfully penned.  A prime example occurs in the first verse when Gray sings, “‘Cause you keep me on a rope / And tied a noose around my throat / You’re gone then back at my door.” Gray contradicts himself at times, painting the perfect picture of the plight of love – liking someone, yet knowing it’s best to move on, yet not being able to move on. The Cut That Always Bleeds” cuts deep!

7. BUTCHERS HAREM, “EROTIC STORIES WRITTEN IN BLOOD”

EROTIC STORIES WRITTEN IN BLOOD // BUTCHERS HAREM PRODUCTIONS // 2017

BUTCHERS HAREM, EROTIC STORIES WRITTEN IN BLOOD [📷: BUTCHERS HAREM PRODUCTIONS]“Tears of crap mixed with morsels of semen from bleeding butt, their rear ends bashed to fuck dumb sluts left battered in fear struck.” Say what? “EROTIC STORIES WRITTEN IN BLOOD” – that’s a fierce, eyebrow-raising song title right there! “EROTIC STORIES WRITTEN IN BLOOD” lives up to its title as it’s unapologetic.  Appearing as the unlucky 13th track on – wait for it – EROTIC STORIES WRITTEN IN BLOOD, this joint isn’t the least bit safe for work. BUTCHERS HAREM is “Doing something unholy”! “We get aroused when we’re murdering and play with the guts / Take our display of disturbing shit like a blade raping ya cunts.” Wow 😬! It doesn’t get any more family-friendly for the Australian rap collective as they mention “Tourist bitches corpses dismantled, then left abandoned / Rottin’ bodies hidden in the bushes under piles of sandstone / Vaginal chasms full of warm juices from my testicular sanctum,” as well as asserting, “Nailing the mammaries upon adolescent fruition, vaginal splattering with the stench of attrition, make every victim, adsorb my fuck.” What more is there to say? These erotic stories are, pardon my French, totally fucked up.

8. The Weeknd, “Until I Bleed Out”

After Hours // Republic // 2020

The Weeknd, After Hours [📷: Republic]“I wanna cut you outta my dreams / ‘Til I’m bleeding out / ‘Til I’m bleeding out.” Well, that’s disturbing, and morbid with the “bleeding out” part.  Of course, that’s Grammy-winning Canadian R&B superstar The Weeknd for you, sigh. He concludes his best album, After Hours, dramatically with “Until I Bleed Out.FYI, The deluxe version adds three more tracks.  The lyrics hail from the chorus, which sums up the song to a T.  The chorus continues: “I wanna cut you outta my mind / ‘Til I’m bleeding out / ‘Til I’m bleeding out.” Pessimistic, the pain of Abel Tesfaye is our pleasure.  Oh, the schadenfreude. On a positive note, he desires sobriety (“And I don’t even wanna get high no more / I just want it out of my life”).

9. The Kid LAROI, “Bleed”

THE FIRST TIME // Columbia // 2023

The Kid LAROI, The First Time [📷: Columbia]“How did your heart mend so easy? / Mine still bleeds.” Matters of the heart – so complicated, The Kid LAROI (Charlton Howard)! The Grammy-nominated Australian pop musician continues singing in the chorus of “Bleed,” “Hard to believe you don’t need me / All those memories we made are burnin’ in my brain.” Relatable to the nth degree.  “Bleed” is the second track from THE FIRST TIME, his debut album released in late 2023. Beyond the chorus, Howard shares the ultimate plight of love – the aftermath of a breakup.  In the first verse, he concludes, “I’m lost up in my head again, I’m caught inside myself / You promised that it wouldn’t end / But you let me, you let me down.” The sentiment is similar at the end of the second verse, where his ex-girl’s mom “tried to console [him] that love comes and goes.” Upon releasing THE FIRST TIME, he was still only 20 years old.  Despite his youth, he captures heartbreak superbly.  He sings beautifully, delivering one of the best vocal performances of his young career.  He balances tenderness, grittiness, and anguish. He penned “Bleed” with Billy Walsh and producers Omer Fedi and Blake Slatkin. “Bleed,” hence, is bloody good 😜.

10. Post Malone, “Hollywood’s Bleeding”

Hollywood’s Bleeding // Republic // 2019

Post Malone, Hollywood's Bleeding [📷: Republic]“Me and Kurt [Cobain] feel the same, too much pleasure is pain…” Grammy-nominated artist Post Malone delivered another enjoyable, crowd-pleasing affair with his third album, Hollywood’s Bleeding. Hollywood’s Bleeding is a dramatic album title. “I light a candle, some Palo Santo / For all these demons, which I could just go on…” “Hollywood’s Bleeding” is a fitting opening statement from the LP. In Post’s hands, the place where so many dreamers go to make it is a death trap. “Outside, the winter sky turnin’ grey / City up in smoke, it’s only ash when it rains,” he sings, continuing, “Howl at the moon and go to sleep in the day / Lover for everybody ‘til the drugs fade away…”  From his perspective, Hollywood is dark, disappointing, and troubling (nearly, if not fatal) despite the fact “We call it home,” or so he asserts in the chorus:

“I just keep on hopin’ that you call me

You say you wanna see me, but you can’t right now

You never took the time to get to know me

Was scared of losin’ somethin’ that we never found

We’re running out of reasons, but we can’t let go

Yeah, Hollywood is bleeding, but we call it home.”

Word, Post Malone. I felt that.

11. Cannibal Corpse, “I Cum Blood”

Tomb of the Mutilated // Metal Blade // 1992

Cannibal Corpse, Tomb of the Mutilated [📷: Metal Blade]There is nothing family-friendly about Tomb of the Mutilated, the 1992 album by metal band Cannibal Corpse. Focusing on “I Cum Blood”, it’s brutal and rough around the edges. “Swollen with liquid / Ready to burst,” frontman Chris Barnes sings in the first verse, continuing, “Load of my nymph / Will quench this dead body’s thirst.” Well, damn. Barnes is referencing a particular white bodily fluid: “Fucking the rotting / My semen is bleeding / Smell of decay / Seeps from her genital cavity.” DISGUSTING! I have questions regarding the ‘bleeding’ part. Those excerpts, of course, cum merely from the first verse.  Barnes is NOT done.  Before the second verse, we get the titular line, in all its ‘blood lust’: “I cum blood from my erection / I feel it run / Down her throat, swallow.” The necrophilia only grows more twisted: “I need a live woman / To fill with my fluid / A delicate girl to mutilate, fuck and kill…” In the disturbing third verse, Barnes at least admits to his crimes 🤷

“Greatest thrill of my life

Slit my own cock with a knife

Violent climax

Surging serum

On my skin.”

Cannibal Corpse has always lived on the edge and this hellish tune is a prime example.

12. Kanye West, “Blood on the Leaves”

Yeezus // Def Jam // 2013

Kanye West, Yeezus [📷: Def Jam]Most critics loved Yeezus, the 2013 album by Kanye West (it scored an 84 via Metacritic). Still, it wasn’t the Grammy winner’s most successful from a commercial standpoint.  Nonetheless, there were some awesome moments including the thrilling, Nina Simone sampling “Blood On The Leaves” (“Strange fruit hangin’ from the poplar trees / Blood on the leaves”). “Blood On The Leaves” is one of the best songs of the rapper’s career.  Those biting, malicious synths within the production – WOO! Honest and emotional, West delivers superb rhymes. Such rhymes include a reference to a truism that money can’t buy everything.  Specifically, Mr. West asserts, “And all I want is what I can’t buy now.” Of course, there’s also colorful references to Jay-Z and Beyoncé that we couldn’t possibly omit:

“I don’t give a damn if you used to talk to JAY-Z

He ain’t with you, he with Beyoncé, you need to stop actin’ lazy.”

13. Mandisa, TobyMac & Kirk Franklin, “Bleed The Same”

Out Of The Dark // Sparrow // 2017

Mandisa, Out of the Dark [📷: Sparrow]“We all bleed the same / We’re more beautiful when we come together.” Unity is a beautiful thing, and the world needs more of it! The late, great, Grammy-winning Christian singer/songwriter Mandisa (Mandisa Hundley) continues singing on “Bleed The Same”, “We all bleed the same / So, tell me why, tell me why / We’re divided.” That is a good question. The answer, sadly,  is complicated and has been for ages, unfortunately. “Bleed The Same” is the sixth track on her 2017 album, Out Of The Dark. She collaborates with Grammy-winning Christian music superstars TobyMac (Kevin Michael McKeehan) and Kirk Franklin. Hundley, TobyMac, Bryan Fowler, and Christopher Stevens penned the track.  Likewise, Fowler and Stevens produced.

Mandisa delivers dynamic, powerful vocals throughout “Bleed The Same.”  That begins with her vocals in the intro, the eventual chorus. TobyMac performs the first verse, singing easily but sharing thought-provoking lyrics (“Woke up today / Another headline / Another innocent life is taken / In the name of hatred”).  Mandisa takes over in the pre-chorus, leading into the crème de la crème, the chorus.  Extending upon the intro, she asserts, “If we’re gonna fight, let’s fight for each other / If we’re gonna shout, let love be the cry.” Amen! She also sings the second verse, preaching equality. TobyMac performs the related but contrasting bridge section with Mandisa joining in the second half.  As for Kirk Franklin, he ministers at the end of the record, a role he excels in (“So, Father God, I pray / That our families will come together right now… ”). Enthusiastic production supports this powerful trio in this thoughtful contemporary Christian gem.  Rest in peace, Mandisa.
