1. Orville Peck, Kylie Minogue & Diplo, “Midnight Ride”

Stampede // Orville Peck, LLC / Warner // 2024

Orville Peck, Stampede [📷: Orville Peck, LLC / Warner]Did you ever expect Orville Peck, Kylie Minogue, and Diplo to collaborate? The answer is NO. However, those three talented musicians joined forces for “Midnight Ride” from Peck’s 2024 album, Stampede. Peck, Minogue, Marci, and Chris Stracey penned “Midnight Ride.” Diplo, Stracey, and Picard Brothers produced. “Midnight Ride” is set in a minor key – dark, but not too dark. The production is fantastic. It incorporates cues from pop, country, and dance. Country music fans may cry foul that it’s nontraditional, but non-country music fans will embrace the eclectic vibes. The smoking hot Peck is the first voice heard, singing with a beautiful tone. The warmth, depth, and masculine timbre of his voice are impressive. Following his verse and the pre-chorus, the listener gets the first taste of the irresistible chorus:

“Let me take you on a midnight ride

Baby, you and I

Ooh, so much we could explore

Pull me closer under moonlit skies

Fire in your eyes

Ooh, you got me burnin’.”

Minogue enters the mix in the second verse. She contrasts Peck’s singing with subtlety in an undertone.  She rises to the occasion duetting with him in the second chorus, showing more commanding, dynamic vocals. Besides the chorus, one of the most fun moments of the song is the bridge where both singers show off their personalities. Orville, Kylie, and Diplo kill it on “Midnight Ride”.

2. Doja Cat, “Ride”

Planet Her (Deluxe) // Kemosabe / RCA // 2021

Doja Cat, Planet Her [📷: Kemosabe / RCA]“Boy, I’m lookin’ at you, don’t walk away / Comin’ home at like two, then four, then eight.” Oh my! Doja Cat (Amala Dlamini), what is yo’ man doing? “I saw you sneakin’, tryna plant one on her / Oh, you mad all the sudden ‘cause your man got my number?” Oh, shit, he’s in big trouble! “Ride” is the 18th track on the deluxe version of the Grammy winner’s third album, Planet Her.  In the three-minute groovy song slickly produced by Yeti Beats, Dlamini has been played – U-S-E-D!  “Need somebody to love on me, baby, baby, oh / Low-key, I love it when you talk to me,” she raps in the second verse, concluding, “But I don’t wanna be your one-night thing / Oh, help me, can we? Oh.” In the chorus, the centerpiece, she questions his lack of sincerity. “Where is your jealousy? Why won’t you cry? / This is just telling me you took me for a ride.” Sad, but at least, Doja found out sooner than later.  In this context, the ride was sketchy AF.

3. Artemas, “ride me darling”

yustyna // Artemas // 2024

Artemas, yustyna [📷: Artemas]“Ride me, darling / Ride me, sweetheart, I can feel you.” Of course, you can, Artemas (Artemas Diamandis).  It doesn’t take rocket science to figure out what the English Cypriot singer, songwriter, and producer is encouraging her to DO 😈. “Fixing these scars / Fuck away the pain in your heart,” he continues singing in the intro and eventual chorus. “Ride me darling”, the eighth track from the mixtape, yustyna, keeps things brief, running about a minute and a half in duration. Diamandis penned and produced “ride” with Kevin White.

“Ride me darling” is a surefire vibe. Why? The sound of the record is a prime reason.  It is groovy.  Also, the instrumental backdrop is colorful – the beat, synths, and the bass synth. Diamandis’ vocals stand out.  They are playful and filled with effects.  Of course, what Artemas sings is enticing because it’s often sexually charged.  “You know, you got me tweaking every single night,” he sings in the verse, adding “You got this sickness in my mind last night.” He admits to “getting nervous in myself,” asking her to “Just put your arms around it.” It, huh? Hmm 🤔.  In the outro, the theme is similar – fucking the pain away:

“Look me in the face

I’m losin’ control, mm, put your legs, ooh

Fuck away the pain in your heart.”

Albeit brief, “ride me darling” marks another fabulous moment from yustyna. Artemas conveys his emotions and his horniness 😈.

4. Grant Brett, “Ride”

“Ride” // Dark Dance // 2024

Grant Brett, Ride [📷: Dark Dance]“I’m gonna give you the ride of your life.” By ride, Portland, Oregon pop singer/songwriter Grant Brett is NOT referencing a car. He titillates on the brief, naughty single, “Ride”: “I’m gonna make you cum, cum all night.” Sex positivity – it’s all the rage! When tweeting about his single, he asserts, ‘I’m ready to Ride 🍑,’ adding, ‘I hope you love my new power bottom anthem.’ Power bottom, huh 🍆 🍑 😈?  Lyrics and playful vocals by Brett make “Ride” a surefire vibe.  It begins with pleasure-filled, breathy vocals in the intro (“Yeah… you like that”).  That’s the perfect preface for musical and physical pleasure. From there, he gets sassy, supported by an energetic, electric backdrop with a rhythmic beat. “I’m gonna show you all that I can do / I’m gonna make all your dreams come true / I’m gonna give it to you / Gonna show you what this boy can do, do, do.” Brett is confident that the ‘S Meets E and then they X’ is potent – #GIVING! Eventually, it leads to the ride and the explosion 💦 😈. Brett keeps things freaky, with the gimmicky, “L-l-l-love me right / Go, go, go all night,” vowing to “Bounce, bounce, bounce, all night.” The “Ride” is a short one – sub-two minutes – but Grant Brett gets the job done 😉! It’s the booty anthem you didn’t know that you needed!

5. Ciara, “Ride” (Ft. Ludacris)

Instinct // LaFace //2010

Ciara, Basic Instinct [📷 : La Face]“He love the way I ride it, He love the way I ride the beat / Like a freak, freak, freak.” The ‘ride’ that Ciara references in “Ride” involves the joystick 🕹️ 😈! “Ride,” which appears on her 2010 album, Basic Instinct, is naughty, raunchy, and risqué. C enlists Ludacris for the assist, which seems to be a match made in heaven… or hell…  Luda should get down on his knees and pray, particularly when it comes to lines like, “She ride it like a roller coaster / As soon as I get her to the top, she screams.” Part of the raunchiness is because of the songwriting/production team: Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, Terius “The-Dream” Nash, and Kuk Harrell. The-Dream, specifically, has been known for his fair share of dirty songs, so, it’s not surprising his pen plays a role on this ‘hot and bothered’ cut. Ciara is lustful and gets the boys horny too. She claims to be a gymnast at one point, but the only gymnastics she’ll be competing in are in the bedroom, or, wherever she and her man enjoy ‘making love.’ The music video is as sexy as H-E- 🏒🏒. Ciara is a beautiful woman, and her dance moves are on point.  She rides a bull, which is symbolic of a well-endowed joystick. This slow jam, which runs north of four-and-a-half minutes, is quite a stimulating RIDE! Vroom, vroom 🏎️!

6. ur pretty, “Keep Riding Me”

“Keep Riding Me” // ur pretty // 2021

Ur pretty, “Keep Riding Me” [📷: ur pretty]Four words: “Just keep riding me.” How about six words: “Just keep on fucking me deep.” Now that is sexual AF, NO CAP! Ur pretty (Jake Hill) intended the lyrics to involve those private parts. Furthermore, “Keep Riding Me” doesn’t go straight – it’s G-A-Y.  “I can’t think straight when I look into your eyes,” Hill sings in the first verse, later adding, “Yeah, your mustache tickles my nut sack, baby.” Wow – TMI!  It doesn’t stop there, folks, on this sub-two-and-a-half-minute joint! “You got a way with your words and a big fat cock.”

“Flip me over, beat my meat up while you pound it.” Holy shit! The lyrics are ‘something else’ to say the least – UNDERSTATEMENT. In this case, they should be taken with a grain of salt. “Keep Riding Me” feels less an ode to male-on-male love than, say, pop-punk humor. Regardless, Hill serves up some compelling vocals.  His best moment comes by way of the risqué chorus, which is sexed-up to the nth degree but also, entertaining:

“He spreads my cheeks, and he makes me scream

He’s my number one daddy, gotta make him cream inside of me

Just keep riding me

When I’m slurping him down, it’s my favorite sound

You let out a little moan, what a beautiful tone

So softly, just keep riding me.”

🍆 💦

            7. BRONZE AVERY, “CHAOTIC RIDE”

            HEATWAVE // BRONZE AVERY // 2024

BRONZE AVERY, HEATWAVE [📷: BRONZE AVERY]“Here you are / Brand new to the city / I know you’re lost, but you’re safe if you’re with me.” Aww, BRONZE AVERY 🥰, you amorous, handsome fella you! The pop musician delivers a surefire bop with “CHAOTIC RIDE,” the seventh track from his 2024 LP, HEATWAVE. AVERY penned and produced the shimmering two-and-a-half-minute cut. “CHAOTIC RIDE” features exuberant, summery vocals. Vocal effects enhance his pipes. Matters of the heart (and bedroom) drive the narrative; they never grow stale. “In between all the beauty of trust / And the mystery of a dirty lust / Come over / Come on,” he sings in the second verse. In the pre-chorus, he informs his boo, “I can’t speak cause your cause your love makes me dizzy / And you feel brand new for the millionth time.” Again, I say, aww 🥰. The chorus is the crème de la crème – the centerpiece:

            “I’ll be your guide
            Chaotic ride
            I can’t say lies
            You should take control
            Hard as you can go
Just take me there with you, you, you, you.”

“CHAOTIC RIDE” thrives thanks to love, a danceable groove, hypnotic, sleek synths, and those sickening summery vibes.

            8. Lana Del Rey, “Ride”

Born To Die: The Paradise Edition // Lana Del Rey / Interscope // 2012

Lana Del Rey, Born to Die: The Paradise Edition [📷: Interscope]“Ride” begins Paradise, the 2012 EP by Grammy-nominated pop singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey. The EP is affixed to Del Rey’s debut album, Born to Die as Born to Die: The Paradise Edition. “Ride” is a vibe – enigmatic like many a Del Rey song.  Del Rey is in her lower register which is undoubtedly both rich and unique. Del Rey does manage to ascend into her upper register, where she is much more decipherable and precise as a vocalist.  Produced by the legendary Rick Rubin, “Ride” has a standard pop/rock groove, but still possesses an alternative-pop sensibility. Strings reside here like Born to Die.  The songwriting is solid, particularly the chorus: “I hear the birds on the summer breeze, I drive fast/ I am alone in the night / Been trying hard not to get into trouble, but I / I’ve got a war in my mind…”  Del Rey grows more pointed in the bridge, singing, “I’m tired of feeling like I’m fucking crazy/ I’m tired of driving ‘til I see stars in my eyes…”  Ooh-wee, Lana! Overall, “Ride” is an enjoyable and well-rounded musical trip.

            9. Russ, “Ride Slow”

            There’s Really a Wolf // Columbia // 2017

Russ, Theres Really a Wolf [📷: Columbia]“I’m pullin’ up at 3 / This car just ain’t the same without you here next to me / All I wanna do is ride slow / Ride slow, like a ghost.” There’s Really a Wolf marked the debut album by do-it-yourself, rapper, singer, and producer Russ, who carved his success in the industry slowly but steadily. He showed that ‘the wolf’ possessed plenty of potential.  “Ride Slow,” the album’s sixth track, focuses on romancing a particular woman. He describes her as a tough one for sure, as she has commitment issues, which he tackles on both verses of the record. “We been goin’ back and forth, you think I only want sex,” he asserts in the first verse, continuing, “Of course I want it, look at you, but that ain’t my intentions.” He builds her up in the second: “I saw you at your worst, still think you’re the best / I’ma scoop you tonight.” Ice cream – well, something like that!

            10. Nicholas Dante, “Hellrider”

            Inferno // Clouded Diamonds // 2013

Nicholas Dante, Inferno [📷: Clouded Diamonds]“You wanna be hooked on me / Looking for a little taste…” Yes, Nicholas Dante! The handsome musician 😍 damns us all to hell (the second circle of hell specifically) listening to his titillating single, “Hellrider”.  It commences enigmatically before Nicholas sings one naughty note.  Early on, the backdrop signals hellishness is on the horizon! Adding fuel to the fire is the minor key, fitting for a dark, infernal, and lustful experience. The main source of the hellishness is Dante, the tease that he is! His delivery is drenched in naughtiness, serving up playful vocals.  He sounds breathy, singing in an undertone in the verses, which is… S-E-X-Y 😈.  Even so, the songwriting thrives off of sexual innuendo rather than explicitly crossing any lines.  This use of suggestiveness makes“Hellrider” hella potent. The centerpiece is the catchy, tuneful chorus. Here, the edgy artist is more dynamic:

“I can tell you want me, baby

From the way that you look at me

            I drive you crazy

There’s no way to explain it

            So, let’s ride

Down the rings of hell tonight.”

Nicholas Dante, Hellrider [📷: Clouded Diamonds]Yaasss, king – “Come and fuel my fire,” you addicting, fella you! Getting a bit nerdy, how about the use of that raised sixth during the bridge section? A dose of Dorian mode is just what the doctor ordered in a pop cut, right? Right! All told, Nicholas Dante proves himself to be fierce AF on “Hellrider”.

            11. Joji, “NIGHT RIDER”

            SMITHEREENS // 88rising / Warner // 2015

Joji, SMITHEREENS [📷: 88rising / Warner]“Baby, can you say something? Wanna feel sensation / Promise you I’ll never get numb, I’m too precious.” Side B of SMITHEREENS, the brief, 24-minute, 2022 album by Joji, features just four tracks, all of which clock in under two-and-a-half minutes.  The album’s sixth track, “NIGHT RIDER”, is sleek and rhythmic. Joji asserts in one of the track’s most memorable lines, “I’m too precious” in a refrain that follows the sole verse. It precedes and proceeds the chorus (“Burning forever and ever, fully blazing / I don’t remember no better days / You know I’m waiting just whenever shit’s whatever”).  Joji reflects on protecting his feelings and not allowing himself to be hurt again.  The longing for a past relationship lingers on.  Think of “Night Rider” as being a bite-sized bop – it’s here one minute and gone the next.

            12. Bob Dylan, “Black Rider”

Rough and Rowdy Ways // Columbia // 2020

Bob Dylan, Rough and Rowdy Ways [📷: Columbia]“Black rider, black rider, all dressed in black / I’m walking away, you try to make me look back…” The chilling, dark, enigmatic, minor-keyed “Black Rider” has a strong argument for the best song from Rough and Rowdy Ways, the 39th studio album by the iconic singer/songwriter, Bob Dylan.  “Black Rider” ranked among the best songs of 2020.  Even if the lyrics weren’t potent and Dylan had ‘fallen off’ his storytelling game, the music alone would earn this record accolades. The production is spare, allowing Bob to be the focal point, yet the harmonic progression – the chords – are gorgeous. Of course, it’s Dylan, a lyrical master, so it only requires one lyric to confirm the elite nature: “Black rider, black rider, hold it right there,” he sings on the fifth and final verse, “The size of your cock will get you nowhere.” How awesome is that? “Black Rider” is subject to interpretation, including references to mortality – perhaps Dylan’s own – and possibly, more subtly, politics.

“Maybe I’ll take the high moral ground

Some enchanted evening I’ll sing you a song

Black rider, black rider, you’ve been on the job too long.”

            13. Mary J. Blige, “We Ride (I See the Future)”

            Reflections – A Retrospective // Geffen // 2006

Mary J. Blige, Reflections - A Retrospective [📷: Geffen]“Just can’t help it, I love my hun / All that I need and all that I want.” Back in 2006, when “We Ride (I See The Future)” arrived, Mary J. Blige was happily married. The single, from her greatest hits compilation, Reflections – A Retrospective, speaks about looking forward to growing stronger as a couple. In the chorus, Blige asserts, “From the day to the night / We ride, we ride, we ride /… I see the future, baby / You and I, better with time.” Sadly, her future with husband Kendu Isaacs ended in 2018 after 15 years of marriage, but it doesn’t take away from the bright, uplifting nature of the song. MJB penned “We Ride” alongside Bryan-Michael Cox, Johnta Austin, and Kendrick Dean. Cox and Dean produced it.  The smooth piano and sophisticated contemporary R&B vibes catch the ear.

The star of the show is Mary J. Blige.  She is authentic, dynamic, expressive, and heartfelt in her performance.  She captures a happiness she didn’t believe she would ever find. “Now ladies if you got a man and he treat you real good / Ain’t you gon’ flex every chance that you get,” she sings in the first verse, adding, “Now ain’t you gonna love him just like you should? / Especially when you never thought you would.” In the second verse, she addresses the men: “Now fellas if you got a girl and she treat you right / Ain’t you gonna spend every dollar, every cent? /… Especially when she’s reppin’ you for life.” Aww! Blige amplifies the feels in the bridge when she asserts, “Love is a mountain and we’re at the top.” Sadly, not everybody experiences the love that Blige sings about in “We Ride (I See The Future)”.  Some experience it for a while but the ‘honeymoon’ ends. Regardless, just hearing about a love like this makes you want it. It drives you to search and fight for something so substantial.
