Oops, Sorry, and Other Mistakes SongsBritney Spears, Fall Out Boy, Lil Yachty, Manchester Orchestra, and Lil Yachty are just a few of the musicians who make an appearance on ‘13 Oops, Sorry, and Other Mistake Songs.’

Oops! My bad! I’m sorryI totally messed up. I made a mistake.  Sigh, we all make mistakes.  That is the subject of our latest, greatest contribution to the world, 13 Oops, Sorry, and Other Mistake Songs.  This playlist is all about being apologetic…some of it anyways.  There are many songs that features the aforementioned words in their song title, in some context.  Even though this list is somewhat focused on admission of mistakes, it’s not a deal breaker if a little sarcasm is thrown into the mix.  Some of the featured artists appearing on this star-studded tour de force includes Britney Spears, Fall Out Boy, Lil Yachty, and Manchester Orchestra.

1. Fall Out Boy, “Wilson (Expensive Mistakes)”

Writers: Andy Hurley, Joe Trohman, Patrick Stump & Pete Wentz | Producer: D. Sardy

M A N I A • Fueled by Ramen • 2018

“If I could get my shit together

I’m gonna run away and never see any of you again.”

Sigh, “Wilson (Expensive Mistakes)” is among the crème de la crème of the long-delayed, critically-mixed, Fall Out Boy album, M A N I A. Patrick Stump is invested, delivering solid, distorted, rhythmic vocals.  The pre-chorus is memorable, blending Stump’s smooth, soulful delivery with the coarseness of the distortion. the chorus is epic – boisterous, intense, and turned up to the nth degree.  By the final iteration, things are hella heavy.

“I hope the roof flies off and I get blown out into space

I always make such expensive mistakes

I know it’s just a number but you’re the eighth wonder

I’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker color.”

2. Lil Yachty, “Oops”

Ft. 2 Chainz & K$upreme

Writers: Damon Hendricks, Khalil Dalton, Miles Parks McCollum & Tauheed Epps | Producer: Polo Boy Shawty

Lil Boat 2 • Capitol / Motown • 2018

“Oops,” featuring 2 Chainz & K$upreme is chief among highlights on album Lil Boat 2 by Lil Yachty. Short and sweet, it benefits from its brevity.  After all, Yachty is best served in moderation.  In addition to its skeletal beat, K$upreme drops a stupid, yet absolutely infectious hook, assisted by Yachty.

“Oops, oops, ooh
F*ck a n*gga’s b*tch, I’m like, ‘Oops’ (oops)
Pass her to the gang, n*gga, that’s an alley-oop (oop)
Ridin’ ‘round town in an all-white coupe (yeah)
Gang of bad b*tches blow a n*gga like soup (yeah)
You was buyin’ Polos, I was buyin’ coupes
Oops, oops, oops, oops.”

3. Toni Braxton, “Sorry”

Writers: Frederik Ball, Kwame Ogoo, Royce Doherty & Toni Braxton | Producer: Fred Ball

Sex & Cigarettes • Def Jam • 2018

Ah Toni Braxton – a legend in the R&B game! In the context of her first solo album in eight years, Sex & Cigarettes, our highlighted track, “Sorry” moves away from the explicit into groovier and more soulful territory. NOTE: Braxton shows off some potty-mouth on the preceding record, “FOH.”  Still firmly planted in her adult contemporary R&B comfort zone, “Sorry” feels vintage, yet fresh all-in-one.  Among selling points are those low-register vocals and the strings. She brings it on home” on the chorus.

“I’m sorry that I let you

I just should’ve walked away

I’m sorry that I let you

In my life and made you stay

I should’ve never loved you

You just showed me who you are

If none of this affects you

You’re sorrier than me by far

You’re so sorry.”

4. Demi Lovato, “Sorry Not Sorry”

Writers: Demi Lovato, Sean Douglas, Trevor Brown, Warren Felder & William Zaire Simmons | Producer: Warren “Oak” Felder

Tell Me You Love Me • Hollywood / Island • 2017

“Payback is a bad b*tch.” Clearly, Demi Lovato drops a sarcastic oops regarding her unapologetic feelings on the feisty, soulful “Sorry Not Sorry.” This was one of the best songs of 2017, hands down.  Her 2017 album, Tell Me You Love Me, definitely deserved more love than it received.

“Baby, I’m sorry (I’m not sorry)
Baby, I’m sorry (I’m not sorry)
Bein’ so bad got me feelin’ so good
Showin’ you up like I knew that I would
Baby, I’m sorry (I’m not sorry)
Baby, I’m sorry (I’m not sorry)
Feelin’ inspired ‘cause the tables have turned
Yeah, I’m on fire and I know that it burns.”

5. Halsey, “Sorry”

Writers: Greg Kurstin & Halsey | Producer: Greg Kurstin

Hopeless Fountain Kingdom • Astralwerks • 2017

“Sorry” gives Halsey an absolutely stunning ballad – among the most sincere and authentic songs of her career.  She offers an apology for her unbelief in herself as well as her inadequacies in the course of a relationship:

“So, I’m sorry to my unknown lover

Sorry that I can’t believe

That anybody ever really

Starts to fall in love with me

Sorry to my unknown lover

Sorry I could be so blind

Didn’t mean to leave you

All of the things that we had behind.”

She later urges her unknown lover, “Someone will love you.”

6. Lil Mix, “Oops”

Ft. Charlie Puth

Writers: Charlie Puth, Jacob Luttrell & Michael Caren | Producer: Charlie Puth

Glory Days • Sony • 2017

Yes, it’s corny.  Yes, it’s schmaltzy. Yes, it’s incredibly tongue in cheek“Oops” by Lil Mix, featuring, co-written, and produced by Charlie Puth is all of the aforementioned.  Most of all, however, it’s infectious and incredibly fun.  This is fitting for a girl group, and Charlie Puth delivers the goods with the vintage sound of the production.  Nothing to be the last bit sorry about here.

“Oops, my baby, you woke up in my bed
Oops, we broke up, we’re better off as friends
Now I accidentally need you, I don’t know what to do
Oops, baby, I love you.”

7. Manchester Orchestra, “The Mistake”

Writer: Andy Hull | Producers: Andy Hull, Catherin Marks & Robert McDowell

A Black Mile to the Surface • Loma Vista • 2017

“Everybody I know makes the same mistakes

Packaged up in different boxes, masking shame.”

“The Mistake” marks the third appearance of Manchester Orchestra on one of our playlists.  Furthermore, “The Mistake” is the third song from the band to grace a playlist from their 2017 album, A Black Mile to the Surface.  A conceptual effort, the songs are naturally related to one another, something that’s tough to execute.  “The Mistake” is impressive, with Andy Hull in full-on, reflective mode. Interestingly, the second verse of this song features lyrics that relate to the song that precedes it, “The Wolf” (which appeared on 13 Songs That Reference Wolves) regarding pregnancy.

“Laying on the carpet spilt

You told me you were fairly sure that you’d marry him

Embryonic accidents, a native knife, you gotta finally bury it.”

8. Musiq Soulchild, “My Bad”

Ft. Willie Hyn

Feel the Real • eOne • 2017

It’s pretty simple when it comes to “My Bad,” one of 24 songs on the double album, Feel the Real.  Musiq Soulchild knows he totally messed up with this girl.   On the chorus he admits, “my bad,” Ebonics for “my mistake.”

“My bad, yeah it was my bad all along
All this time I ain’t really realize what I had
Yeah, I admit, I had it all wrong
Every time you tried to tell me, I would get so mad
And you was so unhappy ’cause
I wasn’t getting’ everything you needed
Prolly thought I wasn’t changin’ and you peeped it
So when you dipped out
That’s when I figured out it was my bad.”

9. Neck Deep, “Critical Mistake”

Writers: Ben Barlow, Dani Washington, Matthew West, Phil Thorpe-Evans & Sam Bowden

The Peace and the Panic • Hopeless • 2017

“I made a critical mistake in a momentary lapse of judgement

Now you’ve called me up again to remind me of the ways I’ve fucked up

So, then I’ll just take all the blame

It all just feels the same.”

Neck Deep frontman Ben Barlow makes it clear that he’s messed up the relationship royally, well, sort of.  While he paints a picture of “sinner and saint” on “Critical Mistakes,” he also seems to point out the wrongs of his latest ex. On the chorus, he sings:

“I could be everything you need
If you could learn to be someone else
I keep trying to bridge the distance
You’ve been thinking about yourself
It’s the way you want the world to be
It’s the way you want the world to be.”

10. Tame Impala, “New Person, Same Old Mistakes”

Writer & Producer: Kevin Parker

Currents • Modular • 2015

“Feel like a brand-new person
(But you’ll make the same old mistakes)
I don’t care, I’m in love
(Stop before it’s too late).”

Kevin Parker – what a talented person.  The Tame Impala brainchild certainly makes no mistakes in regards to the quality of “New Person, Same Old Mistakes.”  The closing record from the band’s 2015 album Currents says it all – “Two sides of me can’t agree.”  While Parker has “changed” for the better, he still admits his flaws, which are the same old pitfalls.  Notably, Rihanna covered this record (as “Same Ol’ Mistakes) on her 2016, Grammy-nominated album, Anti.

11. Ariana Grande, “Best Mistake”

Ft. Big Sean

Writers: Ariana Grande, Denisia Andrews, Dwane Weir II & Sean Anderson | Producers: Key Wane & Sauce

My Everything • Republic • 2014

“Break up, make up

Total waste of time

Can we please make up our minds and stop acting like we’re blind?

‘Cause if the water dries up and the moon stops shining

Stars fall, and the world goes blind

Boy, you know I’ll be savin’ my love for you, for you.”

What exactly is the “Best Mistake” that Ariana Grande makes exactly? According to the single from My Everything, it was then current relationship, which happened to be with rapper and featured guest, Big Sean. Of course, those who follow pop culture know that the relationship between the two did not last.

“‘Cause you’re the best mistake I’ve ever made

But we hold on, hold on

There’s no pot of gold in the rainbows we chase

But we hold on, hold on, yeah.”

12. Tweet, “Oops (Oh My)”

Ft. Missy Elliott

Writers: Charlene Keys, Melissa Elliott & Timothy Mosley | Producer: Timbaland

Southern Hummingbird • Elektra • 2002

“From his body, so buttery brown and tantalizing

You woulda thought I needed help

From this feeling that I felt

So shook I had to catch my breath.”

Ah, we travel back to 2002, to the days when Tweet had a breakout hit with “Oops (Oh My).” The Timbaland produced joint is one of the best urban contemporary records of the new millennium, thanks to its catchy lyrics and stellar production. Speaking of the lyrics, to many, it seems like Tweet dabbles in female masturbation… According to Bustle, that’s not what she was getting at. You be the judge.

“Oops, there goes my shirt up over my head, Oh my
Oops, there goes my skirt droppin’ to my feet, Oh my
Ooh, some kinda touch caressing my legs, Oh my
Ooh, I’m turning red
Who could this be?”

13. Britney Spears, “Oops!… I Did It Again”

Writers & Producers: Max Martin & Rami Yacoub

Oops!… I Did It Again • Zomba • 2000

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!” Here’s the one that everybody’s been waiting for! As classic as Tweet’s “Oops (Oh My)” is, nothing tops Britney Spears’ beloved, iconic “Oops!… I Did It Again.”  The production is on-point, the lyrics are catchy, and even Spears who isn’t a powerhouse vocalist by any means, sounds great here. Interestingly, veteran British folk singer-songwriter Richard Thompson covered the pop classic on his 2003 album, 1000 Years of Popular Music.  How cool is that?

“Oops, I did it again

I played with your heart

Got lost in the game

Oh, baby, baby

Oops, you think I’m in love

That I’m sent from above

I’m not that innocent.”
