1. Nick Jonas, “Gut Punch”

Sunday Best » Republic » 2026

Nick Jonas, Sunday Best [📷: Republic]

“When the hell did I start trying to be perfect? / And people-pleasing, is it ever really worth it?”
Fair questions, Nick Jonas. Jonas unveiled “Gut Punch”, the first single and fifth track from his fifth studio album, Sunday Best. He penned “Gut Punch” with Josette Maskin, Blush, and producer Ryan Daly.

Nick Jonas is inquisitive, introspective, and self-critical throughout “Gut Punch.” In the first verse, after calling Phil, Jonas sings, “He said, ‘Go easy on yourself,’ but what does that even mean? / Sounds like good advice, but I just can’t hear it right now.” The second verse, excerpted earlier, reflects the same emotions and mindset. “Looked at myself and I can’t even recognize,” he sings, and concludes, “Who I am behind those eyes, one big disguise.” Throughout, Jonas sounds pleasant, singing with incredible expressiveness and sincerity.  The crème de la crème comes by way of the chorus, where Nick sings, “Hit me like a gut punch, I hurt my own feelings / How did I get so good at being mean to myself?” Relatable lyrics and feelings, by all means. On the bridge, the hurt Jonas imagines being nicer to himself, which is advice many of us need to heed.  Accompanied by a classy, refined adult contemporary pop backdrop (moody keys, rhythmic guitar, and the appropriate percussive hit on “gut”), Nick Jonas brings the heat on the thoughtful and enjoyable “Gut Punch”.

2. Boy Throb, “Finger”

“Finger” » Boy Throb » 2025

Boy Throb, Finger [📷: Boy Throb]

“This is, this is, this is / Boy Throb / Four boys, one bop!”
Woo-hoo! And thus begins “Finger”, the debut [original] single by Boy Throb. Is Boy Throb a legitimate boy band? According to the band, yes, they are. Others have been skeptical, but “Finger” shows the collective’s potential.  After all, bubblegum is a part of the equation, right? Right! Evan Papier, Anthony Key, Zachary Sobania, and Darshan Magdum, the members of the boy band, wrote “Finger.” Boy Throb collectively produced it.

There is a lot to like about “Finger.” It begins with that dramatic, layered vocal intro, establishing Boy Throb! It continues with an awesome groove and a cool, mellow backdrop.  For whatever criticism they’ve received, on “Finger,” Boy Throb sounds like a boy band through and through.  Evan Papier shines with most of the vocals on the first verse and pre-chorus.  He sounds sweet and incredibly relaxed.  He’s also confident, aspiring for big things: “Everyone’s got something to say / But, baby, they’re just jealous /… Honestly, I’m not even fazed / ‘Cause when I win the Grammy, I’ll make sure to say ‘thanks.’”  Papier’s pre-chorus is a vibe, too, where “It’s fire, I’m going higher and higher.” Zach Sobania brings vocal contrast during the second verse.  His voice is lower, contrasting Evan’s bright, boyish lead vocals from the first verse. “If you ever feel like you do not belong,” he sings, “Newsflash, baby, you are not right, you are wrong.” Word. The chorus, performed by Anthony Key, with Darshan Magdum entering the mix on the second go-round, is infectious – simply irresistible!

“Hey! (Hey!)

When you point your finger my way (Way!)

Just know that you’re pointing

One, two, three

Back at you, not me

And I’ll still be iconic and slay, oh.”

Slay, Boy Throb, slay! Adding to the brilliance of “Finger” is a memorable Indian music riff that precedes a timely modulation near the end.  This bubblegum pop record is a winner!

3. Lucy Dacus, “Ankles”

Forever Is A Feeling » Lucy Dacus / Geffen » 2025

Lucy Dacus, Forever Is A Feeling [📷: Lucy Dacus / Geffen]

“What if we don’t touch? / What if we only talk / About what we want and cannot have?”
Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Lucy Dacus establishes a high bar on “Ankles” early on. “And I’ll throw a fit / If it’s all I can do,” she continues singing in the love-oriented first verse. “Ankles” is a promo single and the third track from Dacus’ fourth studio album, Forever Is A Feeling. Dacus penned it, producing alongside Blake Mills.

“Ankles” features ear-catching, driving, rhythmic strings from the onset. Besides the strings, plenty of excellent rhythmic lines contribute to the colorful vibes of the musical accompaniment. “Ankles” is anchored by a solid groove. The backdrop is perfect for Dacus, who delivers a cool, calm, and collected vocal performance. She never gets too high or too low. She never sounds like she even thinks of breaking a sweat. Expectedly, the songwriting is top-notch. “Agent of chaos, angel of death / One of three ancient fates,” she sings the poetic lyrics in the second verse, adding, “Playing with your scissors again.” Beyond radiant vocals and elite songwriting, the melodies are tuneful, particularly during the chorus:

“Pull me by the ankles to the edge of the bed

And take me like you do in your dreams

I’m not gonna stop you

I’m not gonna stop you this time, baby.”

The excellence of “Ankles” speaks for itself. Dacus remains one of the best songwriters of the 21st century.

4. Tyler, The Creator, “Sugar On My Tongue”

DON’T TAP THE GLASS » Columbia » 2025

Tyler, The Creator, Don't Tap The Glass [📷: Columbia]

“Like sugar on my tongue, tongue, tongue / Your body is so sweet, sweet, sweet,”
Tyler, The Creator (Tyler Okonma) sings in the first verse of “Sugar On My Tongue”. He continues, “Invite me if you come, come, come /… It’s all I want to eat, eat, eat.” Gah-day-um, T! “Sugar On My Tongue” is the second track from the rapper/singer/producer’s surprise 2025 album, DON’T TAP THE GLASS. “Sugar” is one of the most fun moments, filled with energy… and sex… The drum run sets the tone in the intro.  The beat is hard-hitting, while the backdrop is set in a minor key. Another pro regarding the musical accompaniment is the colorful, striking synths.

Tyler, The Creator infuses plenty of personality into his melodic rap performance. Case in point: “Tell the bitches that you know / What you heard about me?” “Sugar” thrives thanks to tuneful melodies and Tyler’s memorable, sexually charged bars. Among the naughtiest lyrics are the titillating, “I got a brush, give me your walls and I’ll paint, uh-huh / Don’t need no air, I stay down there ‘til I faint.” Also, the double entendre on the bridge shines: “You wanna get me up and never be locked in?” The chorus is infectious – sugary sweet:

“Like sugar on my tongue

Can I steal that from you?

Like sugar on my tongue

Can I steal before I go?”

Ultimately, “Sugar On My Tongue” is a naughty little bop from Tyler, The Creator, who never seems to have a shortage of creativity.

5. Ice Spice, “Phat Butt”

“Hatin’ bitches be angry, hatin’ bitches, they ain’t me.”
Does Grammy-nominated rapper Ice Spice ever mince words? No, at least, her music to this point suggests she doesn’t. Unapologetic and Isis Gaston are synonymous. “Phat Butt” marks the third single from the rapper’s debut album, Y2K! “Butt,” which features a badass, banging beat, is produced by go-to collaborator RIOTUSA. Like many Ice Spice songs, the duration is brief.  “Phat Butt” runs for two minutes and ¢hange. That is sufficient, allowing her to let the bitches, fucks, and shits fly.  Fierce, her flow is sick. Also, her confidence (and cockiness) are through the roof.  “How the fuck I’m still chewin’ bitches in gray shorts and a plain tee?” she asks, adding, “Rap a bitch on a pop chart, toastin’ bitches like Pop-Tarts.” I told you she says the word bitch a lot.  Of course, she references her butt: “Fat butt with a back tat, and I been bad like Mike Jack.” *Hee-hee! In the second verse, she drops a Pauly D / Jersey Shore reference, brags about money, rich sex, and of course, her ass: “Fat butt, pully my pants up, shakin’ ass, got my bands up.”  Ice Spice doesn’t rap about anything brand-new or notable on “Phat Butt”  but it’s (1) entertaining and (2) a vibe. She’s got the ASSets as an ascending star…

6. Beats By AI, “They Fingered My Stink”

“They Fingered My Stink” » Beats By Ai » 2025

Beats By AI, They Fingered My Stink [📷: Beats By Ai]

“Well, I went down to Georgia / Now my booty’s out of order / Cuz I found some good ole boys and boy / They put me in a corner.”
Oh, boy… What exactly transpired in that corner? After some moonshine, “They bent me over / Said that booty’s lookin’ tight / They fingered my stink…” Gah-day-um 😳! Beats By AI dropped an outlandish, NSFW country tune with “They Fingered My Stink”, which lasts just a minute and a half.  That is long enough for a man to be violated by multiple men… “They Fingered My Stink” is focused on a hole – a man’s ‘enticing’ tight, pink asshole. The nameless victim of drunken, finger-banging touts the opening in his tush: “Oh lord my stink is so damn pink / And fingers love to blast that thing.” He adds, “Georgia boys especially / Wanna watch me drink and make it wink.” He warns us, “Yeah, Georgia Boys love a tight-ass stinker / And when they smell one, they warm up the fingers,” adding “So, maybe next time I should spare my cheeks / And never let a Georgia boy near my stink.” In case you live under a rock and didn’t catch the drift, post-anal sexual experiences, soreness is to be expected. Our protagonist’s butt is sore since, “they blasted my cheeks / My knees were so weak / They fingered my stink for an hour at least / I was cutting the cheese, they were loving that thing.” “They Fingered My Stink” is one of the most outlandish and unhinged songs I have heard in some time.  Making this gay-ass (🤭) country record even wackier is the AI-generated cover art. The victim is frightened by those smiling Georgia Boys who are enjoying his stink far too much.  Oh, brother 😶!

7. Malcolm Todd, “Chest Pain (I Love)”

Malcolm Todd » Columbia » 2025

Malcolm Todd, Malcolm Todd (still) [📷: Columbia]

“My chest is hurting, my feet can’t fall out of bed / I don’t know where to go, so I’ll lay here instead / With my symptoms, symptoms of sorrow and dread.”
What in the world is going on with Malcolm Todd?  It’s those pesky matters of the heart, folks. “They all said it would fade, but again and again / I love, I love.” In “Chest Pain (I Love)”, the fourth track from his self-titled 2025 album, he’s in love, yet the object of his affection is not there with him. Major bummer. This ‘love’ thing is making the ascending alternative/indie artist sick emotionally and physically.  Todd penned “Chest Pain (I Love)” alongside Charlie Ziman and Jonah Cochran.

The chorus marvelously sums up his ailments and feelings.  Beyond the centerpiece is a verse in which Todd expresses his longing.  “I’ve been so busy / But now that I’m alone, where did you go?” He asks, adding, “Why can’t you live at home tonight and stay with me /… Please, I wanna see what we would be if you were by my side.” Straightforward lyrics: Todd sings beautifully and honestly, sounding relatable.  Beyond the singing, the musical accompaniment is sweet, blending alternative, pop, and a dash of R&B.  The bass line is robust, the guitars add spice, and the keys provide color.  Notably, strings amplify the drama and emotion near the end. Set in compound duple meter, “Chest Pain (I Love)” gets a nice lilting feel.  Ultimately, Todd’s unfortunate experiences with the loss of love are our pleasure to listen to.

8. Allie X, “Off With Her T*ts”

Girl With No Face » Twin Music Inc » 2024

Allie X, Girl With No Face [📷: Twin Music Inc]

“My body is a prison / But how can I escape?”
Haven’t we all asked that question regarding some part of our anatomy at some point? LGBTQ+ allies can deliver bops that make the listener beam with pride, too. Canadian singer/songwriter Allie X (Alexandra Hughes) is a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community, and in 2024, she delivered one of the year’s most thought-provoking songs: “Off With Her Tits”.  The title of the highlight from Girl With No Face is on the nose, but the theme and lyrics are deeper and more transcendent.  “Off With Her Tits” may not be intentionally written for those that identify as trans, for example, but you can see how the lyrics could relate to gender-affirming surgery:

“Then I called the doctor

Said, ‘Miss, what can you do?’

She told me she’d cut them off

I said, ‘Sign me up for June’

I went to the teller

Took out 10K in cash

She said, ‘Bitch, are you joking?

I wish I had that rack’.”

Even from other identities in the community, the body dysmorphia alluded to lyrically connects. Allie X penned and produced this provocative masterpiece.

From the beginning, the body issues plague Allie X, or the character portrayed.  Although her beauty is admired, she’s perturbed (“Stubborn Aphrodite”). In the chorus, she’s clear she desires/prefers being flat-chested (“I’m flat with a wit /… Off with her tits”).  In the second verse, she’s unhappy because her chest has grown larger than she’d like. However, ‘he’ likes the sight, speaking to unwanted objectification.  “He noticed in the show said he liked it, and I cried,” she sings, adding, “Take this flesh and suck it out / And stop the ridicule.” While the songwriting and her desire to “be parallel” is the crowning achievement of “Off With Her Tits,” musically, Allie X is the sugar honey iced tea too.  The dark, gothic-pop instrumental backdrop is fierce, providing ample fuel for her electrifying vocal performance (the groove, the synths, the minor key).  The melodies are ear-catching and tuneful from start to finish.  “Off With Her Tits” is a song that many can relate to for different reasons.

9. Lil Toe, “Suck My Nutz”

Essentials » Lil Toe » 2021

Lil Toe, Essentials [📷: Lil Toe]

“You don’t wanna suck my balls?”
Well, Lil Toe (John Durham), that is a bold question. Perhaps if you approached the person more gently… However, the gives-no-fucks rapper continues spitting in the intro of “Suck My Nutz”, “What the fuck do you mean / You don’t wanna suck my nuts.” Clearly, he’s offended that she, presumably, doesn’t want to participate in oral sex… “Suck My Nutz,” which appears on Toe’s 2021 album, Essentials, is spicy from the jump. He wrote “Suck My Nutz” while Wonton (formerly Wonton Jesus, also Durham) produced it.

Before the bars from the intro kick in, the music sets the tone.  The minimalist piano line is malicious.  The beat, which builds up gradually, is sick.  With the excerpted lyrics from the intro, as well as the instrumental, the build-up on “Suck My Nutz” is excellent. Where does it lead? A bad-ass, hard-nosed, distorted, rap banger with NSFW lyrics and utterly nasty-sounding production.  Lil Toe is loud and uncompromising regarding his pleasure.  Would we have it any other way? Hell no! His bold and unapologetic rhymes match the intensity of the backdrop.  The lyrics on the chorus are similar to the intro, where Lil Toe bites, “What the fuck do you mean / You don’t wanna suck my nuts / Ay, I don’t give a fuck / Bitch, I’m tryna bust a nut.” Gah-day-um! The verse on this brief banger adds to its carnal, horny, and raw nature.  “What the fuck do you mean / You don’t do it in the butt (what the) / I’m tryna bust a nut / So come make me cum,” he spits, without giving a shit (🤭).  Keeping it a buck, Lil Toe touts the problem-solving abilities of his balls and adds that he’s “Horny as a goat (bitch) / Bitch I’m a goat (goat) / If you can’t suck dick (bitch) / Bitch you gotta go (bitch).” Ooh-wee! He said what he said.  Do you know what else he says at the end of the verse? He likes it raw… “The condoms at the store / I don’t use those anymore.” 👀 Lil Toe is turned up to the nth degree on “Suck My Nutz”.  That BJ, and beyond, are clearly non-negotiables 😈!

10. Rhett and Link, “It’s My Belly Button”

“It’s My Belly Button” » Mythical Entertainment » 2014

Rhett and Link, It's My Belly Button [📷: Mythical Entertainment]According to Rhett and Link, “It’s time that we unwrapped this gift / Let’s bring back the male midriff.”  Amen! I agree! The male midriff is the sugar honey iced tea 😍! On the cover art for their 2014 single, “Belly Button,” both Rhett and Link serve up hot belly buttons. Fellas that also excel in the belly button department, how about Garrett Clayton, Lil Nas X, Michael Cimino, and Taylor Zakhar Perez, to name a few? Phew 😮‍💨! Anyways, in the chorus of their silly song, the Mythical duo sing: “It’s my belly button, my belly belly button / I won’t pretend like it’s nothing / ‘Cause my belly belly button’s really, really something / Something I want to show to you.” And guess what? We want to see it! I forgot to mention that ETHAN shines in the belly button department, too, and is sans shirt 🚫 👕. Admittedly, I “Like It”.  Okay, okay – I’m being silly 🤪, and thirsty🥤. But when a song is about the male belly button, it deserves a silly blurb! “Uh! You should call me a seal, ‘cause I’m going full naval / I bedazzled it, I made a nugget dip, taste it,” Rhett and Link rap in the second verse, adding, “Hold up! Fill the hole up with molten gold / Molten gold nugget for my charm bracelet.” Oh, for the love of male belly buttons!

11. Perfume Genius, “Put Your Back N2 It”

Put Your Back N 2 It » Perfume Genius / Matador » 2012

Perfume Genius, Put Your Back N 2 It [📷: Perfume Genius / Matador]

“Put your back into it / There is still grace in this.”
What is there still grace in Perfume Genius (Mike Hadreas)? Intimacy and sex… as a gay man. Hadreas keeps the lyrics minimal but meaningful on “Put Your Back N2 It”. “Put Your Back N2 It” is the 10th track from Perfume Genius’ 2012 album, also titled Put Your Back N 2 It. Of the album, Christina Lee penned in an article in The Fanzine in 2012:

Put Your Back insists that there’s grace in gay sex, and that his love, boiled down to its essence, is no different from anyone else’s love.

Eloquently stated.  The out-and-proud musician approaches this song therapeutically, asserting there should NOT be shame regarding sexuality. He’s damn right.

The song title might be misleading. Without hearing the song or examining the lyrics, it suggests an aggressive sexual experience.  Furthermore, when it comes to gay sex, it carries a negative connotation.  It’s considered dirty, filthy, unnatural, etc.  Perfume Genius paints a much different picture with his radiant pipes and the undeniable authenticity and sincerity of his performance.  In the second verse, Hadreas asserts, “There is love with no hiding / Nothing you show me –  I will never leave you.” Aww! The chorus, like the verses, is brief but potent: “Let me be the one to turn you on.” The musical accompaniment shimmers, led by the synthesizer of his partner, Alan Wyffels“Put Your Back N2 It” is one of the most refined and gorgeous songs about intimacy you’ll ever hear. Homophobes be damned!

12. Macklemore, “Penis Song”

The Language of My World » Ben Haggerty » 2005

Macklemore, The Language of My World [📷: Ben Haggerty]

“This is my penis song / I wish that I had a bigger shlong…”
😳 “One that was quite a bit more thick and way more long / One of those porno King Kong dongs.” Wow 😮, I’m speechless 😶! It takes some big cojones to record a song about your schlong. Apparently, Grammy-winning rapper Macklemore (Ben Haggerty, b. 1983) had ‘em when he recorded his “Penis Song”.  Let that peen sink in! “Penis Song” is the 12th track from his debut album, The Language of My World, released in 2005.  A spicy joint about the size of his nether, “Penis Song” is best taken with a grain of salt.

Fittingly, “Penis Song” begins with a penile introduction (sorry, couldn’t resist).  This occurs before the chorus, excerpted earlier. “Ladies and gentlemen, introducing / The ‘Penis Song’.” Oh, dick, shit! Here, Macklemore is accompanied by a dusty, hard-hitting groove, a big string bass line, keys, and guitar.  There are some old-school rap, jazz-rap vibes that make this bold song incredibly musical.  Regarding the rapping, Macklemore delivers a compelling cadence and flow throughout.  He is brutally honest, asserting, “I wish my dick was bigger, yep, I can admit it / I’m above average on inches, but I wanted damn double digits.” Woo! He continues, “If I had a big ol’ cock, what would I do? / I’d probably go to Florida and show it to Trina and screw.” Lawd have mercy! He concludes the first verse with a bang: “I know that God made us all different and special / But shit, did he really have to invent lopsided testicles?” One of the most entertaining moments is an interlude when he asks the ladies about average-sized dicks: “Ayo, ladies? Yeah? Ladies? Yeah? Do you want a guy with an average dick? Hell no.” In the second verse, Macklemore offers more penile goodness, or lack thereof: “I promise, I’m so self-conscious / That’s why you never see me skinny dippin’ in August.” Later, he proclaims, “If I was really hung I’d make a whole album called Me and My Dick / With interludes of all the girls that I’d been with / And talk about my package and multiple orgasms / ‘Cause all that I see is that size does matter.” Word.  He understands, however, “I’m not a porno star, I just gotta face it.” On “Penis Song”, Macklemore brings ample big dick energy, size deficit aside! Nothing more needs to be said!

13. Rick James & Smokey Robinson, “Ebony Eyes”

Cold Blooded  » Motown » 1983

Rick James, Cold Blooded [📷: Motown]

“I really love you, woman, I love you / Ebony eyes, oh, my.”
Sadly, Rick James (1948 – 2004) had his fair share of demons. But the Grammy-winning musician oozed with talent.  He showcases his music gifts to the fullest on “Ebony Eyes”,  the third track from his 1983 gold-certified album, Cold Blooded.  He wrote and produced the track himself.  On the love-centric gem, he duets with a fellow Motown legend, the one-and-only Smokey Robinson (b. 1940). “Ebony Eyes” respectably impacted the pop charts, reaching number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It performed better on the R&B charts, peaking at number 22.

“Ebony Eyes” commences with a great drum groove, setting up the awesome balladry.  The production is characteristic of the 1980s, with ample lush, electronic, and synthesizer-dominated sounds.  Also, upping the ante from a musical underpinnings standpoint is the harmonic progression.  However, it is the duet that you came for. Smokey Robinson draws first blood, singing the first half of the first verse. Ultra-refined, Smokey’s tone is buttery smooth and pure (“Wind in your hair, sun on your skin / You’re looking good, girl, all over again”). Rick James sings the second half of the verse. After beginning similarly to Smokey, he delivers more overt, powerful pipes (“Ooh, we, baby, girl, you’re such a score / And I want you to know that”). James brings it on home in the song’s centerpiece, the chorus:

“I love you

I bet you didn’t know that, girl

You didn’t know that

I need you

Right now, baby, right now, baby

And I bet you didn’t know that ebony eyes.”

Following an interlude between the chorus and the second verse, Robinson takes on the first half of the second verse, with a similar approach to the first. James returns for the second half, beginning poised, before gradually upping the ante, once more (“You’re such a queen, woman, you’re such a prize”).  Expectedly, he’s even more powerful in the second chorus. James flexes in the extended chorus, giving his all with his soaring pipes.  The inspiration remains the same: L-O-V-E! Robinson also gets into the mix, singing passionately and romantically with his cool, calm, collected, and celestial ad-libs. All told, Rick James and Smokey Robinson make a formidable duo on “Ebony Eyes”.  They complement and contrast each other superbly.  Beyond the amorous vocals and songwriting, the musical accompaniment incites love, too 😍!
