๐ŸŽง 13 Incredible Songs Driven by Faith [๐Ÿ“ท: Brent Faulkner, cottonbro, Ivan Samkov, MART PRODUCTION, Michael Burrows, The Musical Hype, Pexels, Ric Rodrigues, RODNAE Productions]๐ŸŽง 13 Incredible Songs Driven by Faith features ABBA, Bleachers, Carrie Underwood, G-Eazy & The Weeknd.

A

mong my favorite words in the English vocabulary is faith.  Why? Faith is meaningful, powerful, and transcends reason and things physically experienced.  Faith, hence, requires going deeper than many โ€“ even the most devout and โ€˜faithfulโ€™ โ€“ can.  One scripture stands out from The Bible, and it doesnโ€™t matter whether youโ€™re religious, spiritual, or atheist to the core, honestly โ€“ itโ€™s thought-provoking:  โ€œโ€ฆIf ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.โ€

No worries if youโ€™re not feeling the religion thing! ๐ŸŽง 13 Incredible Songs Driven by Faith has something for everybody, including the faithless.  In one case, ๐ŸŽ™ Slayer even encourages a ๐ŸŽต โ€œNew Faithโ€ โ€“ woo! In addition to the legendary metal band, ๐ŸŽง 13 Incredible Songs Driven by Faith features songs courtesy of ๐ŸŽ™ ABBA, ๐ŸŽ™ Bleachers, ๐ŸŽ™ Carrie Underwood, ๐ŸŽ™ G-Eazy, and ๐ŸŽ™ The Weeknd among others.  Again, Bibles arenโ€™t necessary for this 1st compendium of the year of our Lord, 2022, but you might want some headphones or speakers!

1. ABBA, โ€œI Still Have Faith in Youโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Voyage โ€ข ๐Ÿท Polar Music International AB / Universal Music Group โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

ABBA, Voyage [๐Ÿ“ท: Polar Music International AB / Universal Music Group]It only took 40 years but iconic, Swedish pop collective ๐ŸŽ™ ABBA finally returned!  Furthermore, they didnโ€™t merely drop a song or two, but dropped an entire album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Voyage.  The lead single from Voyage, ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Still Have Faith in You,โ€ commences the 10-track LP masterfully โ€“ itโ€™s a radiant opening and comeback record.  The Recording Academy mustโ€™ve thought so too, giving โ€œI Still Have Faith in Youโ€ a ๐Ÿ† Grammy nomination for Record of the Year.

โ€œI still have faith in you / I see it now / Through all these years, that faith live on somehow.โ€ What earns โ€œI Still Have Faith in Youโ€ a spot on this list? Basically, it has all the ingredients of a hit.  No, ABBA werenโ€™t going to reclaim the pop throne with โ€œI Still Have Faith in You,โ€ but, as a post-prime record by the iconic collective, it checks off all boxes. The vocal performance is strong.  The songwriting (๐ŸŽ™ ๐ŸŽผโœ Benny Andersson & ๐ŸŽ™ ๐ŸŽผโœ Bjรถrn Ulvaeus) is memorable, particularly on the chorus.  The arrangement and production (Andersson and Ulvaeus) are superb as well โ€“ warm, grand, and exuberant, particularly as the record progresses.  Hearing ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Still Have Faith in You,โ€ I still have great faith in ABBA.

2. Stevie Wonder & Ariana Grande, โ€œFaithโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Sing โ€ข ๐Ÿท Universal Studio / Republic Records โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2016

Sing (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) [๐Ÿ“ท: Universal Studios / Republic]โ€œI got faith in you, baby / I got faith in you now.โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Stevie Wonder and ๐ŸŽ™ Ariana Grande collaborating on the track? Yes, puh-leez! This blessed musical union occurred back in 2016, via the ๐Ÿ’ฟ Sing original motion picture soundtrack. These two, ๐Ÿ† award-winning musicians commence the soundtrack with ample ๐ŸŽต โ€œFaithโ€ (and high-flying vocals)!  This original was penned by a talented team: Wonder, ๐ŸŽผโœ ๐ŸŽ› Benny Blanco, ๐ŸŽผโœ Brent Kutzle, ๐ŸŽผโœ Francis Starlite, and ๐ŸŽผโœ ๐ŸŽ› Ryan Tedder.

โ€œFaithโ€ is lit, period! We get old-school, retro-soul/pop production (Blanco and Tedder produce), which suits both Wonder and Grande.  Stevie kicks off the singing, wowing with incredible falsetto and a superb tone.  Before explicitly professing his faith on the chorus, Wonder concludes the first verse asserting, โ€œSheโ€™s got her own elevation, holy motivation / So, I wrote some letters out in big bold type.โ€ Ariana isnโ€™t outdone in the least, arriving on the second verse and compelling with her own once-in-a-lifetime instrument.  โ€œSee the boy with the Stevie Wonder swag?โ€ she commences her verse, continuing, โ€œAinโ€™t got a clue all the magic that he has.โ€ I love how smooth she sings yet manages to pack a punch simultaneously.  Furthermore, her upper register โ€“ SICK! โ€œFaithโ€ is a must-hear collaboration that transcends the childrenโ€™s movie that it hails from.

3. Carrie Underwood, โ€œGreat is Thy Faithfulnessโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ My Savior โ€ข ๐Ÿท UMG Recordings, Inc. โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

Carrie Underwood, My Savior [๐Ÿ“ท: Capitol Nashville]Secular musicians who are religious and attribute their faith in God to their success often release at least one faith-based song or even an entire album.  For country musician ๐ŸŽ™ Carrie Underwood, she opted for an entire country-gospel album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ My Savior (2021).  For the most part, Underwood keeps things traditional, opting for familiar hymns as opposed to lesser-known or more CCM numbers.  This, of course, bodes well in her favor, particularly on the likes of the beloved hymn, ๐ŸŽต โ€œGreat is Thy Faithfulnessโ€.

โ€œGreat is Thy Faithfulnessโ€ arrives as the sixth track on My Savior.  Underwood is incredible on her own with her powerhouse vocals.  Honestly, theyโ€™ve only grown more powerful and ripe with age.  Even so, Carrie enlists a surprise collaborator: ๐ŸŽ™ CeCe Winans. Mic drop!  Honestly, not just anyone can sing with CeCe, who can both sing with restraint and โ€˜bring the house down.โ€™ On this collaborative take on โ€œGreat is Thy Faithfulness,โ€ both vocalists bring their โ€˜A gameโ€™ โ€“ understatement! In the first verse, Underwood sings with poise and control, but also incredibly expressively with great sincerity.  In the second, Winans brings more punch and oomph, evolving the performance to a higher, more spiritual level.  You can just sense where โ€œGreat is Thy Faithfulnessโ€ is going to end up.  Underwood goes on to โ€˜up the anteโ€™ on the third verse, with both artists trading chilling lines on the chorus:

โ€œGreat is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Lord, unto me.โ€

These two ๐Ÿ† Grammy winners shine, giving praise to The Most High.

4. Russ & Jadakiss, โ€œFaithโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ CHOMP 2 โ€ข ๐Ÿท Russ My Way Inc โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

Russ, CHOMP 2 [๐Ÿ“ท: Russ My Way]๐ŸŽ™ Russ is one confident mo-fo, thatโ€™s for sure! โ€œIโ€™ma always put my faith in me, yeah.โ€  Word! The rapper/producer kicks off his banger โ€œFaithโ€ showcasing an agile, and again, confident flow. Even putting faith in himself on this ๐Ÿ’ฟ CHOMP 2 joint he starts off by giving thanks to God: โ€œThank God that I never had to pop a pill / To have pop appeal, thatโ€™s just not real.โ€ Again, word!

Being the do-it-all dude that he is, he handles the production as well.  The result is a respectable backdrop.  I heart the use of that vocal patch within the production โ€“ SICK! One of my favorite lines from Russ adorns that backdrop: โ€œDeep pockets, deposits / Wrote a self-help book, Iโ€™m on my Deepak shit.โ€ Well, that โ€œDeepak shitโ€ is rad! A brief melodic chorus follows the lengthy verse by Russ. ๐ŸŽ™ Jadakiss arrives on the second verse, true to self, with his gruff-voiced, grimy flow.  What Iโ€™m saying is, have faith in this surefire banger!

5. The Weeknd, โ€œFaithโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ After Hours โ€ข ๐Ÿท Republic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

The Weeknd, After Hours [๐Ÿ“ท: Republic]โ€œI lost my faith / Iโ€™m losing my religion every dayโ€ฆโ€ Losing religion has been a prominent theme in pop music for years and years.  It occurs on ๐ŸŽต โ€œFaith,โ€ the eighth track from ๐Ÿ’ฟ After Hours, otherwise known as the totally badass album somehow snubbed by the ๐Ÿ† Grammys โ€“ ugh.  Anyways, on โ€œFaith,โ€ religion itself just might be the least of ๐ŸŽ™ The Weekndโ€™s issues.

Basically, The Weeknd has been consumed by his demons: love, sex, and drugs.  All three totally have the potential to mess you up. There are a number of revealing lines on this vulnerable record, including โ€œIโ€™ve been sober for a year, now it timeโ€™s for me / To go back to my old waysโ€ฆโ€ Not Good.  Thereโ€™s also an even more dramatic lyric:

โ€œBut if I OD, I want you to OD right beside me

I want you to follow right behind meโ€ฆโ€

Wow!

6. Bon Iver, โ€œFaithโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ i,i โ€ข ๐Ÿท Jagjaguwar โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2019

Bon Iver, i, i [๐Ÿ“ท: Jagjaguwar]๐ŸŽ™ Justin Vernon explores spirituality constantly throughout his music. His views have evolved throughout his career, with the gorgeous, high-flying ๐ŸŽต โ€œFaithโ€, a highlight from the ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ i, i, characterizing the ๐ŸŽ™ Bon Iver frontman much more agnostic than the past: โ€œFold your hands into mine / I did my believing / Seeing every time.โ€ While Vernon exhibits faith, heโ€™s doesnโ€™t seem to be a proponent of the Christian concept of Faith is Seeing the Unseen, captured by the scripture 2 Corinthians 5:7: โ€œ7For we walk by faith, not by sight.โ€

On โ€œFaithโ€ The nods to religion, rather anti-religion, run rampant.  On the second verse, Justin Vernon asserts, โ€œI shouldโ€™ve known / That I shouldnโ€™t hide / To comprise and to covet,โ€ continuing later, โ€œThere is no design / Youโ€™ll have to decide / If youโ€™ll come to know, Iโ€™m the faithful kind.โ€ The fourth verse is arguably the crowning achievement, where Vernon flat out denounces faith in God:

โ€œThis is for my sister

That for my maple

Itโ€™s not going the road Iโ€™d known as a child of God

Nor to become stable

(So, what if I lose? Iโ€™m satisfied).โ€

Beyond its deep meaning, โ€œFaithโ€ has everything you expect from a Bon Iver record.  The production by Vernon, ๐ŸŽ› Brad Cook and ๐ŸŽ› Chris Messina is marvelous.  The sound naturally embraces indie-folk, constructed by layered acoustic guitars, as well as piano.  Of course, itโ€™s not only indie-folk, with the signature alternative-electronic piece remaining in play, with unique vocal effects, synths, and pads.

7. Rev. James Cleveland, โ€œWhere is Your Faith in Godโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Sings with the Worldโ€™s Greatest Choirs โ€ข ๐Ÿท Savoy โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 1985

Rev. James Cleveland, Sings with the World's Greatest Choirs [๐Ÿ“ท: Savoy]Question: โ€œWhere is your faith? Where is your faith in God?โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Rev. James Cleveland touts the power of believing in God and having faith on ๐ŸŽต โ€œWhere is Your Faith in Godโ€.  This is one of many beloved gospel classics by one of gospel musicโ€™s most innovative and pivotal figures.  โ€œFaithโ€ can be found on an album released near the end of Clevelandโ€™s life, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Sings with the Worldโ€™s Greatest Choirs, from 1985.

On this slow, stirring black gospel masterwork, the role of the choir is big, singing the main melody while Cleveland ministers, ad-libs, and comes in strong on the key lyrics.  Throughout, various scenarios are presented, all of which require leaning on those everlasting arms (aka God).

โ€œSay youโ€™ve been sick

Tell me about it

And you think you canโ€™t get well

Where is your faith?

Where is your faith in God?โ€

Whatever problem presents itself, Clevelandโ€™s point is loud and clear: trust and believe in God.  Itโ€™s crucial to have faith.  The prescription offered, hence, is the most powerful, omniscient, merciful, and all-knowing.

8. Bleachers, โ€œWhatโ€™d I Do with All This Faith?โ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night โ€ข ๐Ÿท RCA โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

Bleachers, Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]โ€œI donโ€™t know what to do with this faith / Hey, what do I do with all of this faith?โ€  Now that is a legitimate, deep question, ๐ŸŽ™ Jack Antonoff.  The musician/producerโ€™s band, ๐ŸŽ™ Bleachers released its third studio album in 2021, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night.  The excerpted lyrics appear on the 10th and final track, ๐ŸŽต โ€œWhatโ€™d I Do with All This Faith?โ€ I love the folksy approach to this record, with Antonoffโ€™s vocals leading the charge.

โ€œWhatโ€™d I Do with All This Faith?โ€ features lovely, lush production. I love the use of the horns, specifically, saxophone. The extended, instrumental introduction is one of the biggest selling points.  Bigger still, of course, is the songwriting, which references 60s politics. Specifically, Jack Antonoff focuses on Robert F. Kennedy, a liberal torchbearer who was sadly assassinated in 1968.  Essentially, Antonoff speaks of how titanic Kennedy was and thereโ€™s few figures like him to make change happen. โ€œSo long, Bobby, weโ€™re still scared to start / Now itโ€™s just college kids and me playing in the park,โ€ Jack sings in the first verse, adding in the second, โ€œOr cry hats off to the last Kennedys who even dare to try?โ€ At the end, Antonoff asserts, โ€œโ€˜Cause ainโ€™t no faith could take your place.โ€

9. Ghost, โ€œFaithโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Prequelle โ€ข ๐Ÿท Loma Vista โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2018

Ghost, Prequelle [๐Ÿ“ท: Loma Vista]โ€œI am all eyes / I am all ears / I am the wall / And Iโ€™m watching you fall / Because faith is mine!โ€ ๐ŸŽต โ€œFaithโ€ continues the sheer excellence of ๐Ÿ’ฟ Prequelle, the ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated album by ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning Swedish band, ๐ŸŽ™ Ghost. Kicking off with a bang, itโ€™s easy to believe in the harmonized guitars, as well as the jagged, beefy bass line. Can I get an amen?

๐ŸŽ™ Cardinal Copia (Tobias Forge) sings with conviction throughout, particularly on the chorus (excerpted above). Expectedly, the lyrics match the disturbed, hellish nature of the instrumental, embracing the plague-oriented concept, particularly on the second verse:

โ€œThe Luddites shun the diabolical

A fecal trail across the land

Although itโ€ฆ

Stinks, feels and look identical

A pack of fools can take the stand.โ€

Notably, โ€œFaithโ€ features pipe organ and choral sounds during the final 30 seconds or so, fittingly segueing into the next track on Prequelle, ๐ŸŽต โ€œSee the Light.โ€

10. Richard Thompson, โ€œLove in a Faithless Countryโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Faithless โ€ข Beeswing โ€ข 2004

Richard Thompson, Faithless [๐Ÿ“ท: Beeswing]โ€œAlways move in pairs and travel light / A loose friend is an enemy, keep it tight / Always leave a job the way you found it / Look for trouble coming and move around it.โ€ Sometimes, the darkest songs can be the most beautiful.  That is the case with ๐ŸŽต โ€œLove in a Faithless Country,โ€ one of the most radiant, yet blackest songs ever.  This song originally appeared on the 1985 LP by veteran British singer/songwriter ๐ŸŽ™ Richard Thompson, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Across a Crowded Room. In the United States, however, the only available version appears on Thompsonโ€™s 2004 effort, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Faithless.

โ€œLove in a Faithless Countryโ€ โ€œdeals with a mass murderer and his wife roaming across Britain,โ€ even though, Moors Murderers  Ian Brady (1938 โ€“ 2017) and Myra Hindley (1942 โ€“ 2002) arenโ€™t explicitly mentioned in the song.  Nonetheless, as beautiful as โ€œLove in a Faithless Countryโ€ is, itโ€™s also unsettling, as are the lyrics.  However, Thatโ€™s the way we make love.

โ€œAlways make your best moves late at night

Always keep your tools well out of sight

It never pays to work the same town twice

It never hurts to be a little nice.โ€

11. G-Eazy, โ€œFaithfulโ€

Ft. Marc E. Bassy

๐Ÿ’ฟ These Things Happen Too โ€ข ๐Ÿท RCAโ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

G-Eazy, These Things Happen Too [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]โ€œI donโ€™t wanna get myself in trouble / Out there fuckinโ€™ โ€˜round with these hoes again.โ€ ๐ŸŽต โ€œFaithfulโ€ commences with an intro by pop singer ๐ŸŽ™ Marc E. Bassy, who aspires to become a better, more mature man.  Bassy follows with the chorus, admitting his wrongs.  He does so because he doesnโ€™t want to lose her: โ€œBut if you walked out right now, it would be painful / Girl, youโ€™re so bad, you make me faithful.โ€ Bassy sings beautifully, riding the backdrop with ease.

The thing is, this isnโ€™t even Bassyโ€™s song! โ€œFaithfulโ€ appears as the 13th track on ๐Ÿ’ฟ These Things Happen Too, the 2021 album by rapper ๐ŸŽ™ G-Eazy. Eazy penned โ€œFaithfulโ€ alongside Bassy, ๐ŸŽผโœ ๐ŸŽ› Jake Torrey, ๐ŸŽผโœ Jakob Kasher, and ๐ŸŽผโœ ๐ŸŽ› Nick Sarazen.  Torrey and Sarazen also serve as producers, constructing a backdrop with a soulful vibe. As for the man of the hour,

Gerald enters the picture in the first verse, speaking of his wrongdoing:

โ€œI know I made some mistakes that you canโ€™t just excuse

I know I did you no favors far as your trust issues.โ€

In the second verse, he further expounds on the matters of the heart and the hurt heโ€™s caused her, spitting, โ€œYou get upset when Iโ€™m on the road and these hoes are around / But itโ€™s a job, I canโ€™t just stay home and be broke in townโ€ฆโ€ Basically, he wants her to know heโ€™s faithful to her and wants her to trust him, acknowledging his mistakes in the process.

12. Slayer, โ€œNew Faithโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ God Hates Us All โ€ข ๐Ÿท Mercury / American Recordings โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2001

Slayer, God Hates Us All [๐Ÿ“ท: American Recordings]โ€œHoly man, open up your eyes / To the ways of the world youโ€™ve been so blind.โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Slayer and apologetic DONโ€™T go together unless you add the prefix un- in front of the word.  The unapologetic death metal collective is known for songs dabbling in serial killers, atheism, and of course, Satanism.  On ๐ŸŽต โ€œNew Faithโ€ (๐Ÿ’ฟ God Hates Us All, 2001), you can be certain that this new faith isnโ€™t evangelical at all.

โ€œTell me how it feels knowing chaos will never end

Tell me what itโ€™s like when the celebration begins.โ€

On โ€œNew Faith,โ€ the tempo is quick.  The production is dark (understatement), comprised of jagged, ferocious guitars.  Furthermore, there are aggressive, biting vocals to match the hellish backdrop. The record sounds atheistic through and through, beyond the lyrics that arenโ€™t the least bit flattering to Christianity (โ€œI keep the Bible in a pool of bloodโ€).  The chorus, with variations, sums up the โ€œnew faithโ€:

โ€œWelcome to the horror of the revelation

Tell me what you think of your savior now

I reject all the biblical views of the truth

Dismiss it as the folklore of the times

โ€ฆ Join the new faith for the celebration

Cult of new faith fuels the devastation.โ€

Self-explanatory, right?

13. George Michael, โ€œFaithโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Faith โ€ข ๐Ÿท Sony โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 1987

George Michael, Faith [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony]โ€œWell, I guess it would be nice if I could touch your body / I know not everybody has got a body like you.โ€ Ooh, wee, ๐ŸŽ™ George Michael! Cโ€™mon! There can be no faith compendium without the beloved Michael classic! ๐ŸŽต โ€œFaithโ€ commences ๐Ÿ’ฟ Faith, the debut studio album by iconic, ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning pop singer/songwriter.  What makes us have so much faith in โ€œFaithโ€™? Itโ€™s that once-in-a-lifetime, flawless pop song, period!

First and foremost, George Michael sounds incredible โ€“ the man could always โ€˜sang!โ€™ Also, he was never too bad on the eyes either ๐Ÿ˜.  Next, the sound of this major record is exuberant.  The production (Michael), particularly for 1987, is ear-catching, slick, and soundly executed. Finally, the songwriting (also, Michael) would make a believer in the staunchest atheist!  Basically, George lacks faith in his lover, who is stunning but untrustworthy โ€“ ultimately, not a keeper.

โ€œBefore this river becomes an ocean

Before you throw my heart back on the floor

Oh, baby, I reconsider my foolish notion

Well, I need someone to hold me

But Iโ€™ll wait for somethinโ€™ more.โ€

Michael may be unable to trust a nameless lover, but weโ€™ll put ample faith in this surefire, pop classic!
