1. BROCKHAMPTON, “WINDOWS”

Ft. SoGone So Flexy

💿 ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE • 🏷 RCA • 📅 2021

BROCKHAMPTON, ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE [📷: Question Everything, Inc. / RCA]🎙 SoGone SoFlexy joins 🎙 BROCKHAMPTON for an epic, six-minute-plus gem from 💿 ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE, 🎵 “Windows.”  SoGone So Flexy performs the intro and the first verse before we get performances by numerous members and associates of BROCKHAMPTON.  🎙 Merlyn Wood appears on the second verse and shouts out the late great Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest.  🎙 Matt Champion asserts, “I can see through your bullshit, like your face was made of plexi” on the third verse, preceding the 🎙 Jabari Manwa chorus.

🎙 Dom McLennon and 🎙 Joba drop the fourth and fifth verses, preceding a bridge fit for a boy band by 🎙 Ryan Beatty, and an interlude by 🎙 Kevin Abstract.  Abstract returns for an outro but not before we get that sixth verse from 🎙 bearface. “Windows” runs long, but man oh man, is it a winner.

2. Erykah Badu, “Window Seat”

💿 New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh • 🏷 Universal Motown • 📅 2010

Erykah Badu, New Amerykah Part Two: Return Of The Ankh [📷: Motown]“So, presently I’m standing / Here right now, you’re so demanding / Tell me what you want from me.” Ah, 🎙 Erykah Badu is awesome – add a seven-letter swear word to awesome for emphasis if you wish (or ‘flipping’ if you’re trying to keep it clean)! In 2010, the 🏆 Grammy winner dropped an incredibly enjoyable, well rounded neo-soul album, 💿 New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh.  The highlight of the album, without question, is 🎵 “Window Seat.”  Here, Badu does what she does: sings in her distinct, one-of-a-kind soulful voice, backed by a calm, cool, and collected backdrop that is a total V-I-B-E. “Window Seat” was written and produced by Badu and 🎼✍ 🎛 James Poyser. Magic, folks, magic!

People had little issue with the song itself.  I mean, just listen to it for yourself – it’s Erykah ‘flipping’ Badu at her best!

“So, can I get a window seat?
Don’t want nobody, next to me
I just want a ticket outta town
A look around, and a safe touch down.”

The problem, however, was the controversial music video, which included a Badu stripping off her clothing (in public), until fully nude, and being shot, notably where JFK was assassinated. Art it is indeed, but in the process, Badu broke the law, facing both a fine and probation. The video, which is meant to promote ‘groupthink,’ is polarizing, but the song itself is definitely EPIC.

“But I, I need you to want me
I need you to miss me
I need yo’ attention, yes
I need you next to me,
Oh I, I need someone to clap for me
I need your direction.”

3. Big Sean, “Jump Out the Window”

💿 I Decided.• 🏷 GOOD / Def Jam • 📅 2017

Big Sean, I Decided. [📷: Def Jam]“I think I’m ready to jump out the window /And turn that nigga that you with right back into your friend, though.” Okay, 🎙 Big Sean, whatever you say. 🎵 “Jump Out the Window” appears on one of the rapper’s better, more mature projects, 💿 I Decided., released in 2017.  Typically, the connotation of ‘jumping out of a window’ is negative… Basically, jumping out of the window, more often than not leads to DEATH.  Of course, such a fatality could be via homicide, suicide, or possibly an accident, though most likely you’d fall out of a window rather than jump.  All of it is disturbing, so let’s move on, pronto!

The good news is that Big Sean isn’t focusing on death or self-harm on “Jump Out the Window.”  Rather, Sean Don is giving his full, undivided attention and dedication to a special lady.  That’s much more positive and less troublesome, fatal, or morbid!

“We already wasted too much time
And your time is the only thing I wish was mine
So yeah, oh yeah, I think I’m ready to jump out the window.”

4. Jazmine Sullivan, “Bust Your Windows”

💿 Fearless • 🏷 J • 📅 2008

Jazmine Sullivan, Fearless [📷: J Records]“I bust the windows out your car / After I saw you laying next to her.” Sigh, there’s nothing worse than a woman scorned! That said, I can’t blame 🎙 Jazmine Sullivan in the least for retaliating against her man on her classic, 🎵 “Bust Your Windows” from her 2008 debut LP, 💿 Fearless.  She continues the first verse, singing, “I didn’t wanna, but I took my turn / I’m glad I did it cause you had to learn.”  She goes on to say busting his windows was therapeutic.

Of course, Sullivan’s anger doesn’t cease after one verse – Oh HELL NO! “I bust the windows out your car / You should be lucky that was all I did,” she sings on the second half of the second verse.  She continues with one of the best lines of the entire song: “After five whole years of this bullshit / Gave you all of me and you played with it.”  What a snake.  Well, at least we got one of the best R&B songs of the aughts out of it, right?

5. Anderson .Paak, “Tints”

Ft. Kendrick Lamar

💿 Oxnard • 🏷 Aftermath Entertainment / 12Tone Music • 📅 2018

Anderson .Paak, Oxnard [📷: Aftermath / 12Tone Music]One of the best moments from 💿 Oxnard, the third studio album by 🏆 Grammy-winner 🎙 Anderson .Paak, is the hella groovy, soulful single, 🎵 “Tints”.  Paak enlists fellow 🏆 Grammy (and Pulitzer Prize) winner, 🎙 Kendrick Lamar, for the assist. On “Tints,” which references tinted windows, Paak sings the first verse, asserting he’s “been feelin’ kinda cooped up,” by the effects of fame.  Within the same verse, he ties everything into his feelings, referencing California weather, the dangers of the Paparazzi, and the socially charged lyric, “Niggas dyin’ for less, I hear.” Paak goes on to talk about his blessings on the pre-chorus, before emphasizing the necessity of “tints” given his fame and various activities.

Lamar shines on the second verse, continuing the fame sentiment captured by Paak.  He continues to reference the need for tints, including “…So I can look at the snakes and posers.”  Paak drops a third verse, referencing “presidential” status and cleverly, “Niggas never see me comin’.” All in all, “Tints” is well-produced, well-written, and well-performed.

6. Still Woozy, “Window”

🎵 “Window” • 🏷 Still Woozy Productions • 📅 2020

Still Woozy, "Window" [📷: Still Woozy Productions Inc. / Interscope]In 2020, 🎙 Sven Gamsky, better known as 🎙 Still Woozy, dropped a short but sweet bop with 🎵 “Window”, a cool, chill single filled with sexy vibes. “Window” provides listeners with some decadent ear candy; it exemplifies combining electronic and acoustic elements.  The guitars are rhythmic and chocked-full of soul, the bass robust, with keyboards amplifying the colorful backdrop.  Those keyboards include electric patches, organ, and of course, synths.  “Window” gets a lift from a 🎙 Marvin Gaye sample, 🎵 “I Heard it Through the Grapevine.” “Window” already had an urban-pop vibe but adding the soul icon to the mix further amplifies it.

Still Woozy does wonders instrumentally, as well as vocally.  He delivers a cool, chill performance that definitely gives off vibes.  He never breaks a sweat, yet the performance is alluring; quite compelling.  Lyrically and thematically, he focuses on matters of the heart, endearingly singing on the first verse :

“I know you like my goofy ass; how could you hate that?
I see what’s underneath and I love you more.”

Of course, the centerpiece of the record is the sensual chorus: “Pull me closer please (longer) / I don’t even need you to explain / How much longer will you (Longer would you) / Keep me on your chain.”

7. The Black Dahlia Murder, “The Window”

💿 Ritual • 🏷 Metal Blade • 📅 2011

The Black Dahlia Murder, Ritual [📷: Metal Blade]“Bless all Earth’s most precious children with my blackened love insane.” Now that’s definitely perverted.  It’s perverted for good reason of course, as metal collective 🎙 The Black Dahlia Murder depict the dishonorable Gilles de Rais.  Who was Gilles de Rais? De Rais (c. 1405 – 1440) is notable in history for fighting alongside Joan of Arc.  Unfortunately, he is also infamous because he was a convicted PEDOPHILIC SERIAL KILLER! Yeah, totally cue up that 🎦 Friday “damn” GIF/meme. Not only did de Rais kill innocent children, but he also sodomized them 🤮 🤮 🤮.

“Bless those putrid beasts— their innocence, my blade’s eager to meet / May my song of hatred lead them forever downward.” The Black Dahlia Murder do a fine, if hellish job of capturing his perverseness exceptionally on 🎵 “The Window.” “The Window” appears on their 2011 album, 💿 Ritual.  Honestly, the lyrics – as blunt and disturbing as they are – perfectly capture one of the true deviants of society.  Shame on you Gilles de Rais!

“I sodomize the young and dying
Sick hunger is my vice — my lust
To drip my rotten seed upon their cooling flesh, so fare
Of their gurgled screams, I could never hear enough.”

8. Ghost, “Helvetesfönster”

💿 Prequelle • 🏷 Loma Vista • 📅 2018

Ghost, Prequelle [📷: Loma Vista]Somehow, 🎙 Ghost didn’t win the Grammy for Best Rock Album for 💿 Prequelle.  That’s a shame, sigh.  Not only was Prequelle the best rock (metal technically, but whatever) of 2018, it was also one of the best albums of the year. Nonetheless, the 🎙 Tobias Forge-masterminded collective has been victorious once before, so don’t feel too badly.  Ghost manages to earn an unlikely spot on this window-fueled list with a song that technically doesn’t even have window in its title: 🎵 “Helvetesfönster.” I know what you’re thinking (‘what the hell’) but there is honestly a good explanation.

The title “Helvetesfönster” actually translates as “hell window.” Elaborating, this refers to medieval dresses that were definitely risqué for the time.  Travis Alexandra Boatright does a fine job describing the surcote, a side-less gown, in his article, Bringing Sexy Back Medieval Style:

A sideless gown, the surcote had deep cut-outs for the arms to go through, gaining it the fabulous title “the windows of hell.”

Basically, men catch a glimpse of women’s breasts in these particular garments.  Hell window/window to hell indeed!  Anyways, actually focusing on “Helvetesfönster” itself, it marks the second instrumental of Prequelle and ends up being quite compelling.  The keyboard and synthesizer programming are amazing. Add the soaring guitars, anchored by bass, and this a breathtaking instrumental… I’m speechless. Nothing hellish or sinful listening to this six-minute cut!

9. ZAYN, “Windowsill”

Ft. Devlin

💿 Nobody is Listening • 🏷 RCA • 📅 2021

ZAYN, Nobody is Listening [📷: RCA]🎙 ZAYN is bold, risqué, and unapologetic on 🎵 “Windowsill,” which appears on his third studio album, 💿 Nobody is Listening. Here, there’s no shortage of “fucking,” literally. He opens up by “Fuckin’ on the countertop, window to the floor,” definitely raising eyebrows and making it crystal clear how things ‘go down.’

The chorus is not only profane, but quite catchy:

“Cigarettes and fuckin’ on the windowsill
In my bed, yeah, tell me when you’re getting’ here
Only thing I wanna know
Is how far away you are.”

Serving up a change of pace, UK rapper 🎙 Devlin supports the electrifying experience, asserting at the end of the third verse, “I’m sure she’d tempt Satan if she ain’t the devil herself.” Amen, I think…

10. Fiona Apple, “Window”

💿 Extraordinary Machine • 🏷 Epic • 📅 2005

Fiona Apple, Extraordinary Machine [📷: Epic]If you weren’t already aware, 🎙 Fiona Apple is a gift to music.  The 🏆 Grammy winner only releases new music every so often, but when she does, it’s always EPIC.  Her 2005 album, 💿 Extraordinary Machine was easily among the best of the year.  Perhaps alternative, art pop hits don’t count the same way as readymade radio bops, but Apple certainly released an album sans miscues.  Among the best songs from Extraordinary Machine was 🎵 “Window.”

“I was staring out the window / The whole time he was talking to me,” Apple sings on the first verse, continuing, “And as he went on and on / It wasn’t the outside world I could see / Just the filthy pane that I was looking through.” Wow, those are such poetic, thoughtful, and emotional lyrics. Clearly, not into this guy, Fiona has to totally break away, which is exactly what she does on the chorus with the brilliant metaphor she’s established.

“So, I had to break the window
It just had to be
Better that I break the window
Than him or her or me.”

The narrative, of course, continues as Apple continues to sing about concentration and view on the second verse, and expands the chorus the second time.  The third verse is a favorite as Apple asserts, “But even when the window was cleaned / I still can’t see for the fact / That when it’s clean / It’s so clear I can’t tell what I’m looking through.” Well, it seems that the struggle is real for Fiona, even with the filth on that windowpane removed. 🎵 “Oh Well”.

11. Travis Scott, “5% TINT”

💿 ASTROWORLD • 🏷 Epic • 📅 2018

Travis Scott, ASTROWORLD [📷: Epic]“Who’s that creeping through my window? (my window) / ‘Fore you come outside, I got the M4 (M4) / Took her to the endzone from the Enzo…” 💿 ASTROWORLD was certainly one of the most highly anticipated albums of 2018.  It marked the third studio album by Texas rapper, 🎙 Travis Scott.  The colorful and enjoyable ASTROWORLD does a superb job capturing his left field, experimental spirit.  A song that slides perfectly into this window-centric list is 🎵 “5% TINT.”

“She like, iced out wrists, iced out-iced out wrists / Fuck don’t kiss, fuck, she fuck don’t kiss…” In the context of ASTROWORLD, “5% TINT” marks the rare Travis Scott solo moment. “5% TINT” features awesome production from the jump (🎛 FKi 1st), led by the beat as well as the piano.  Regarding the subject of window tinting, Generally, 5% tinting is an illegal tint – incredibly dark.  Worth noting, Michigan allows any degree of window tinting, though the next darkest state is New Mexico… 20%. Anyways, focusing on “5% TINT” the song, Scott is explicit and tough while also successfully exhibiting his eccentricity and left-field sensibilities.

12. Zack de la Roche, “Digging for Windows”

🎵 “digging for windows” • 🏷 sombra sounds • 📅 2016

Zack de la rocha, "digging for windows" [📷: sombra sounds]“Fuck that bright shit / The spots or the flashlights / We in L.A. ducking both / In the shadows with lead pipes.” Wow – those are some intriguing lyrics right there. 🎙 Zack de la Rocha was a member of 🎙 Rage Against the Machine. The poet/MC returned in 2016 with his single, 🎵 “digging for windows”.

“Digging for windows” opens with intense opening production.  The thudding sound hits you right in the chest. Ultimately, this foreshadows an aggressive, gives no fucks type of sound. Throughout the course of the song, the production work is superb – insane! De la Rocha is aggressive AF, never backing down as he raps. Numerous lyrics stand out including, “The city’s a trap, my partner / Under the lights of they choppers / Bodies tools for they coffers / Not worth the cost of our coffins.” His wordplay is savvy as he interchanges capital and capitols:

“I put these caps in capitals
Leave minds blazed in they capitols
I step with a fury so actual fact
That my offense could be capital.”

De La Rocha’s return ended up being nothing short of alluring. His rhymes are sharp and thought provoking, while the supporting production is lit. Sadly, a full LP never materialized post-“digging for windows.”

13. Melissa Etheridge, “Come to My Window”

💿 Yes I Am • 🏷 Island Def Jam • 📅 1993

Melissa Etheridge, Yes I Am [📷: Island Def Jam]“Come to my window / Crawl inside / Wait by the light of the moon / Come to my window / I’ll be home soon.”  Sometimes, lovers are forced to sneak around – their bond or relationship can’t be out in the open at that given time.  This happens with affairs obviously, but it can also occur with different types of relationships specifically same-sex relationships.

The phrase, “Come to my window” is obviously the key phrase from the 🎙 Melissa Etheridge classic, 🎵 “Come to my Window” from her 1993 album, 💿 Yes I Am.  The title, Yes I Am, served as affirmation of Etheridge’s sexuality. The song itself is about a same-sex relationship, but keeps things simple without explicit details.  Honestly, it’s an awesome rock record that doesn’t need additional details.  On the bridge of this 🏆 Grammy-winning record, Etheridge sings, “I don’t care what they think / I don’t care what they say / What do they know about this love / Anyway.” Damn right Melissa!
