Ah, the keyword of the playlist, 13 Entertaining, Egotistical Ego Songs is⊠EGO! DUH! Ego is defined by Merriam-Webster as the self especially as contrasted with another self or the world. Say what, now đ§?! The dictionary adds:  Â
[Ego] the one of the three divisions of the psyche in psychoanalytic theory that serves as the organized conscious mediator between the person and reality especially by functioning both in the perception of and adaptation to reality.
The point is that ego is a complicated word and concept. This is personality psychology and psychoanalytic theory weâre exploring đ§ đ€! Even so, many musicians have referenced ego in their songs. The musicians on this list â BeyoncĂ©, Doechii, FLETCHER, Jensen McRae, Lauren Daigle, Lucky Daye, and Saint Harison â explicitly use ego in their song titles, themes, and lyrics. No worries. These musicians arenât psychologists â they donât get in too deep. They keep the entertainment value high on 13 Entertaining, Egotistical Ego Songs. So, without further ado, letâs get into these entertaining, egotistical ego songs, shall we?! Â

1. Doechii & JT, âAlter Egoâ Â
âAlter Egoâ // Top Dawg Entertainment / Capitol // 2024
âI stood on the corner and shook my shit / Now Iâm finna give yâall another hit.â Word, Ayesha Erotica. And, so begins âAlter Egoâ, a collaboration between rappers Doechii and JT. Given the Ayesha Erotica sample in the intro (âSpread That Pussâ), the nearly three-and-a-half-minute song is unapologetic from the beginning. âAlter Egoâ was written by Doechii, JT, Ayesha Erotica, and Zach Witness. Witness and Doechii produced the track incorporating dance, pop, and rap cues. Â
Strong, compelling flows by Doechii and JT in their respective verses. âFuck that hoe, fuck that bitch / Itâs fuck that hoe âtil the condom slip,â Doechii spits, adding, âWho the fuck yâall hoes think run this shit? / Miss she/her/black vagina.â Woo! In the second verse, JT asserts sheâs âUnfazed, unbothered / Unfuckwitable bitch, why bother? Iâm that bitch, Iâm that bitch / Iâm that bitch and you bitches ainât on shit.â Wow! Confidence is through the roof. The pitched chorus following both verses is a surefire vibe. Itâs part of the charm of âAlter Ego.â Â
âNah, nah, nah-nah, nahÂ
These hoes ainât phasinâ me, phasinâ meÂ
Nah-nah, nah-nah-nah-boo-booÂ
Bitch, you dead to me, dead to me, rah.â
The bridge, also sung, is one of the surprises of âAlter Egoâ. It easily distinguishes itself from the verses and chorus (âThatâs just my alternate, thatâs just my alternate / Thatâs just my ego, thatâs just my alternateâ). Ultimately, Doechii and JT bring the heat. Â

2. Josh Levi, âEGOâÂ
DISC TWO (SCRATCHED UP) (EP) // Raedio LLC / Atlantic // 2023Â
âOf course I want you, wonât hear it from me though / Iâm not other people, messinâ with your ego, ego,â the handsome, sexy, and talented Josh Levi sings in the chorus of âEGO.â He continues singing âNow I got you hooked on that placebo / You canât tell whatâs real, messinâ with your ego, ego.â âEGOâ is the 10th track from his 2023 EP, DISC TWO (SCRATCHED UP). The egotistical cut runs two-and-a-half minutes in duration. It was written by Levi, Anthony Jones (Tone Jones), and Trey Campbell. Jones also produced the track. He supplied Josh with a lush, smooth, and modern instrumental. Levi sings expressively with a gorgeous, sexy tone. âI want you wanderinâ / While Iâm across the room / I want you guessinâ if / I even looked at you,â he sings, egotistically, in the first verse. The melodies are tuneful in the verses and the centerpiece, the chorus which was excerpted at the top. âEGOâ is bite-sized, but itâs a decadent and delicious musical bite.

3. FLETCHER, âEgo Talkingâ Â
In Search of the Antidote // Snapback Entertainment LLC / UMG Recordings, Inc. // 2024
âAnd itâs only half of a lie / When I say youâll find someone better someday.â So, there is some truth there! âEgo Talkingâ is the third track on In Search of the Antidote, the 2024 studio LP by FLETCHER (Cari Fletcher). The LGBTQ pop musician penned âEgo Talkingâ alongside Julia Michaels, Madison Love, and producers Jennifer Decliveo and Pete Nappi. Matters of the heart are firmly in play. This post-breakup record thrives lyrically and thematically. Â
On one hand, FLETCHER encourages her ex to have happiness with someone else. âSo, go, do it all, have the time of your life / And kiss every girl, let âem all stay the night.â Itâs the right thing to do, right? Right. The gender of her ex isnât specified. It doesnât matter either, as this sentiment is relatable to anybody regardless of sexual orientation. More compelling is FLETCHERâs ego, which leads her to believe her ex will NEVER do better than she did with her. Â Â
âOh-oh, youâll never fuck somebody hotter, right? Â
Oh-oh-oh-ohÂ
Hope my lips haunt you for lifeÂ
Hearinâ my name twists the knifeÂ
Hopinâ you stay brokenheartedÂ
But thatâs just my ego talkinâ.â
Oh, snap! FLETCHER brilliantly captures the complexity of breaking up on âEgo Talkingâ. She sings authentically and expressively.

4. Jack Murnin, âEgoâÂ
âEgoâ // Jack Murnin // 2024Â
âIt donât feel good / Knowing Iâm so much better than your boyfriend,â Jack Murnin asserts in his 2024 R&B song, âEgo.â He adds, âWhy you call me crazy / You tiptoe around our connection.â So, is the connection legit, or is Murninâs ego inflated? That is the question. Murnin sings expressively from the beginning. In the chorus, he impresses with his falsetto, singing, âIf I could hold you close / Iâd let my ego go / Falling into your love / Let the walls melt round us.â Word! Jack wrote and produced âEgo.â The instrumental is compelling, from the smooth electric piano to the picturesque synths. The compound duple meter amplifies the drama driven by matters of the heart⊠and ego. One of the best instrumental moments occurs between the choruses where the sounds are big and ear-catching. Jack Murnin has a big ego, and arguably, itâs hurt his relationship. That said, he should believe in this sick song.  Â

5. Lauren Daigle, âEgoâÂ
Lauren Daigle // Centricity Music / Atlantic // 2023
âStuck inside the game, all just tryna find a place / For the stories we share are picture-perfect in every frame.â Why does it have to be picture-perfect? Ask yourself that question. The pressure of perfection is enormous⊠ginormous! And that, friends, is a huge downside of social media, particularly the likes of Instagram. Grammy-winning Christian pop singer Lauren Daigle adds, âWe all wanna be known, but weâre afraid to be fully seen.â True. âEgoâ is the 9th track from her self-titled, 2023 LP. Daigle composed âEgoâ alongside Jason Ingram and renowned music producer, Mike Elizondo.
In this thought-provoking song, Daigle cries foul regarding the dangers of seeking attention and clout, validation from others, and E-G-O. In the chorus, she proclaims, âIâm done wrestlinâ with my ego / Lord knows it all feels so hollow / If you wanna go high, then you gotta bow low / If you wanna go deep, gotta rise above the shallow.â Not only is Daigle a fantastic vocalist, but sheâs also a prudent woman. She makes her point loud and clear, over a groovy, colorful instrumental comprised of organ, strings, and horns. âCan we change what weâve become? / Can we save our society,â she asks on the bridge, continuing, âIf thereâs a way, if thereâs a door / Itâs humility.â Amen! âEgoâ is a wise bop. Â

6. Ty Dolla $ign, âEgo Deathâ (Ft. Kanye West, FKA twigs & Skrillex)Â
Featuring Ty Dolla $ign // Atlantic // 2020Â
According to Ty Dolla $ign, âEgo death is where you find happiness / Thatâs the ONLY place you find happiness.â Being egotistical can be a bad character trait, so losing oneâs ego can be a learning, life-changing experience. âMurdered my ego when you walked away / It hurt my ego when you walked away,â Ty asserts in the chorus of âEgo Death,â the 25th track from his 2020 album, Featuring Ty Dolla $ign. He adds, âGave me your all, that wouldnât make me stay / Murdered my ego when you walked away.â On âEgo Death,â Ty collaborated with Kanye West, FKA twigs, and Skrillex. Ty, Skrillex, and BoogzDaBeast produced, incorporating multiple samples including âFreeâ by Ultra NatĂ© and a Kanye West IG rant. A vibe, âEgo Deathâ has an infectious, danceable beat, ear-catching synths, and other cool, colorful musical touches. Besides the sample from his IG rant, West performs the third verse, with no shortage of memorable lyrics like âShowinâ up to the Grammyâs mad / Tryna win someâ we already had,â and âAll these admirations, likes, and false validations / Feeding to our ego, talk for somethinâ, negro.â FKA twigs sings radiantly in the outro, âI let my ego down and then I rise back up / I let me ego down and then Iâll be stronger.â The big takeaway of âEgo Deathâ is⊠let that ego die! Youâll come out better!  Â

7. Paige Fish, âEgoâÂ
âEgoâ // Harbour Artist & Music // 2024Â Â
âNo, I hope hearing this song really didnât boost his ego.â Hopefully not, Paige Fish! If anyone should be egotistical, it should be Fish. The 18-year-old singer/songwriter shines on the engaging, thoughtfully penned âEgo.â Early on, she paints a picture of a man whose ego is problematic: âYour good friends from high school / Told me you like your women a little silent.â Itâs a classic case of a man who wants a submissive woman. Fish plays the game, temporarily, singing in the chorus, âAnd Iâll stay quiet / But only âtil I overflow / Anything to boost your ego.â She wonât brag about herself in his presence, yet acknowledges her success and brilliantly states, âSo you can go and text your other honey / Cause they probably listened to my band / Buy tickets to my shows / And make me money, money, money.â Ooh-wee! Oh, snap! Fish penned this superb song that she sings sublimely with her distinct, nuanced pipes. Carson Ripley produced it. âEgoâ never sounded better in the hands of Paige Fish.

8. Saint Harison, âego talkinââ Â
Lost a friend (EP) // Tell Your Friends // 2023Â
âAdmittance is the key to start the healinâ right,â Saint Harison sings in the first verse of âego talkinâ,â admitting, âBut I didnât wanna eat that humble pie.â Give him credit for being self-aware. Similarly, in the second verse, he blames her instead of himself, taking no ownership. In the pre-chorus, the drink is the culprit, and he sings, âI swear that I donât care if you leave.â Hmm, sketchy! In reality, Saint Harison understands what he needs to do to improve, but he must stop his ego from talking! In the chorus, he asserts:Â Â Â
âThat ainât me though, thatâs just my ego talkinâÂ
Baby, donât roll your eyesÂ
Iâm still me, donât listen to my ego talkinâÂ
My e-e-e-e-ego Â
Owninâ it tonightÂ
My e-e-e-e-ego.âÂ
Saint Harison penned âego talkinââ with Boy Matthews and producer, Deputy. Without a doubt, this exquisitely sung, and sleekly produced R&B song is a highlight from his 2023 EP, lost a friend. Harisonâs voice is simply beautiful. Â

9. Jensen McRae, âMy Ego Dies at the EndâÂ
Are You Happy Now? // Human Re Sources // 2022Â
âI think I lost something in the water,â singer/songwriter Jensen McRae asserts, adding in the first verse of âMy Ego Dies at the End,â âdrowned in a dream that shouldâve made me stronger / I tried to swim through it / I could not swim through it.â Even more personally, in the second verse of the 2022 track from Are You Happy Now?, she sings, âI lost the girl I was over a winter.â So, whatâs going on with McRae in this ballad? What is this change sheâs experiencing? Itâs ego death. She experiences âthe dream againâ and you know what happens? âMy ego dies at the end, itâs ego death /⊠Who am I? Iâve lost the thread / My ego dies at the end.â In this alluring song, Jensen McRae delivers an honest vocal performance thatâs nuanced and thoughtful. There is no shortage of memorable lyrics, including my favorite, âTried baptism but it felt like burning.â McRae composed âMy Ego Dies at the Endâ with producer Rahki who constructs a marvelous, picturesque instrumental.  Â

10. Lucky Daye, âEgo Trip (Intro)âÂ
Table for Two // Keep Cool / RCA // 2021Â
Table for Two is a special project for R&B singer/songwriter Lucky Daye (David Brown). Why? It earned him his first Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album. The Table for Two experience begins with an egotistical intro: âEgo Trip (Intro).â âEgo Trip,â which runs a mere half-minute in duration, sets the tone for the brief album: âAh, right this way Your Litness / Please see our complementary ego check at the entrance / Your table will be moving in three, two, one.â âEgo Trip (Intro)â wouldnât be the final time Daye sang a song about ego. Â

11. Lucky Daye, âEgoâÂ
CANDYDRIP // Keep Cool / RCA // 2022
âNo one can save me / No one can change me / Youâre my ego.â Interesting, Lucky Daye. The Grammy winner has been âputting in workâ on his âEgo.â For example, he asserts, âI learned to love myself less.â Selflessness is awesome! âEgoâ concludes his 2022 album, CANDYDRIP. In no rush, running nearly six minutes, Daye expresses his commitment and love to her. âYou know I want you for mine / Lord knows I gotta fly / Where to draw the line? / Iâm workinâ on my ego (ego, ego ego).â Ooh-wee! He doesnât stop there in the chorus, adding, âGirl, I want you all the time / I been lovinâ on you blind / And that ainât a free throw / Workinâ on my ego.â The concept of the song is interesting because the ego is complicated. He tries to prove himself, yet, he seems confident sheâll be his. He wrote âEgoâ alongside Mike Hunnid and producers Pierre-Luc Rioux, xSDTRK, and DâMile, who constructed an awesome instrumental.

12. Logic, âPardon My Egoâ Â
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind // Def Jam // 2019Â
âFive hundred thousand for a one-off / Hit the stage, I rage, and then I run off (Uh) / It donât matter where we at, itâs poppinâ like a gun off (Uh) / Bumping N.W.A. on the 101-uh (Uh).â WOO! HELL YEAH! Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was an average album by Grammy-nominated rapper, Logic. Before the 2019 album, he released better projects (Under Pressure). Since the 2019 album, heâs released better projects (No Pressure). On âPardon My Ego,â he benefits from the strong production skills of 6ix and CuBeatz. As the title suggests, Logic captures his egotistical nature. âI canât fuck a ho, Iâd rather self-love instead,â he spits in the first verse, adding, âCanât save a ho, no S on my chest, or gun to the head.â Logic also references other successful rappers like Kid Cudi (âA little crazy, but tell me, what genius ainât a little nutty?â) and Kanye West (âI ainât bipolar, Kanye make me wish I was / âCause that level of genius the meanest / Nobody fuckin’ around with that flow / When I spit it, you know itâs the cleanest, uhâ). His flow is ripe and while his rhymes are âemptyâ to an extent, it perfectly fits the aesthetic and overall vibe.⯠Fitting the size of his ego is the size of his⊠(âAll my haters can suck my penisâ).âŻÂ

13. BeyoncĂ©, âEgoâ Â
I Am⊠Sasha Fierce // Sony Music Entertainment // 2008
âSome women were made, but me, myself? / I like to think that I was created for a special purpose.â Word, BeyoncĂ©. The Grammy-winning superstar is confident in âEgoâ, the 14th track from her 2008 double album, I Am⊠Sasha Fierce. âEgoâ earned her another top-40 hit, peaking at no. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. Even with its modest performance, the highlight from the Sasha Fierce side of the LP was certified platinum. Her ego is firmly intact đ.  Â
The concept of ego in Beyâs hands is fascinating. In the first verse, she considers herself lucky because heâs âgot the key to my heart.â Aww đ„°. However, she adds, âBut you ainât gonna need it, Iâd rather you open up my bodyâŠâ Heâs the egotistical one, here, something that she expands on in the chorus:
âItâs too big (big), itâs too wide (wide)Â
Itâs too strong (strong), it wonât fitÂ
âŠHe talk like this âcause he can back it upÂ
He got a big egoÂ
Such a big egoâŠâ
Hmm, the ego doesnât seem like the only thing big đ. The sexual innuendo is ripe. In the second verse, it is BeyoncĂ© with a big ego. Not only does she give him an ultimatum (âYou can leave with me, or you could have the bluesâ), but she also touts her banging body and looks (âDamn, I know, Iâm killing you with them legs / Better yet, them thighs, matter of fact, itâs my smileâ). Accordingly, in the second chorus, the pronouns shift to âIâ since sheâs got a big ego now! Beyond the lyrics, as always, BeyoncĂ© âslaysâ in the vocal department. Furthermore, the production (Bey, Blac Elvis, and Harold Lilly) is some of the finest on I Am⊠Sasha Fierce. âEgoâ blends contemporary R&B with neo-soul, thanks to those exuberant horns, organ, and keys, The remixed version, featuring Kanye West, was nominated for the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. That same ceremony saw Bey win six Grammys, five tied to I Am⊠Sasha Fierce. âI got every reason to feel like I’m that bitch.â Truer words were never spoken, BeyoncĂ©! Â
