Ah, the keyword of the playlist, 13 Entertaining, Egotistical Ego Songs is… EGO! DUH! Ego is defined by Merriam-Webster as the self especially as contrasted with another self or the world. Say what, now 🧐?! The dictionary adds:

[Ego] the one of the three divisions of the psyche in psychoanalytic theory that serves as the organized conscious mediator between the person and reality especially by functioning both in the perception of and adaptation to reality.

The point is that ego is a complicated word and concept.  This is personality psychology and psychoanalytic theory we’re exploring 🧠 🤓! Even so, many musicians have referenced ego in their songs.  The musicians on this list – Beyoncé, Doechii, FLETCHER, Jensen McRae, Lauren Daigle, Lucky Daye, and Saint Harison – explicitly use ego in their song titles, themes, and lyrics. No worries.  These musicians aren’t psychologists – they don’t get in too deep.  They keep the entertainment value high on 13 Entertaining, Egotistical Ego Songs. So, without further ado, let’s get into these entertaining, egotistical ego songs, shall we?!

1. Doechii & JT, “Alter Ego”

“Alter Ego” // Top Dawg Entertainment / Capitol // 2024

Doechii & JT, Alter Ego [📷: Top Dawg Entertainment / Capitol]“I stood on the corner and shook my shit / Now I’m finna give y’all another hit.” Word, Ayesha Erotica.  And, so begins “Alter Ego”, a collaboration between rappers Doechii and JT. Given the Ayesha Erotica sample in the intro (“Spread That Puss”), the nearly three-and-a-half-minute song is unapologetic from the beginning.  “Alter Ego” was written by Doechii, JT, Ayesha Erotica, and Zach Witness. Witness and Doechii produced the track incorporating dance, pop, and rap cues.

Strong, compelling flows by Doechii and JT in their respective verses. “Fuck that hoe, fuck that bitch / It’s fuck that hoe ‘til the condom slip,” Doechii spits, adding, “Who the fuck y’all hoes think run this shit? / Miss she/her/black vagina.” Woo! In the second verse, JT asserts she’s “Unfazed, unbothered / Unfuckwitable bitch, why bother? I’m that bitch, I’m that bitch / I’m that bitch and you bitches ain’t on shit.” Wow! Confidence is through the roof. The pitched chorus following both verses is a surefire vibe. It’s part of the charm of “Alter Ego.”

“Nah, nah, nah-nah, nah

These hoes ain’t phasin’ me, phasin’ me

Nah-nah, nah-nah-nah-boo-boo

Bitch, you dead to me, dead to me, rah.”

The bridge, also sung, is one of the surprises of “Alter Ego”.  It easily distinguishes itself from the verses and chorus (“That’s just my alternate, that’s just my alternate / That’s just my ego, that’s just my alternate”). Ultimately, Doechii and JT bring the heat.

2. Josh Levi, “EGO”

DISC TWO (SCRATCHED UP) (EP) // Raedio LLC / Atlantic // 2023

Josh Levi, Disc Two (Scratched Up) [📷: Raedio LLC / Atlantic]“Of course I want you, won’t hear it from me though / I’m not other people, messin’ with your ego, ego,” the handsome, sexy, and talented Josh Levi sings in the chorus of “EGO.” He continues singing “Now I got you hooked on that placebo / You can’t tell what’s real, messin’ with your ego, ego.” “EGO” is the 10th track from his 2023 EP, DISC TWO (SCRATCHED UP). The egotistical cut runs two-and-a-half minutes in duration. It was written by Levi, Anthony Jones (Tone Jones), and Trey Campbell.  Jones also produced the track. He supplied Josh with a lush, smooth, and modern instrumental.  Levi sings expressively with a gorgeous, sexy tone. “I want you wanderin’ / While I’m across the room / I want you guessin’ if / I even looked at you,” he sings, egotistically, in the first verse.  The melodies are tuneful in the verses and the centerpiece, the chorus which was excerpted at the top. “EGO” is bite-sized, but it’s a decadent and delicious musical bite.

3. FLETCHER, “Ego Talking”

In Search of the Antidote // Snapback Entertainment LLC / UMG Recordings, Inc. // 2024

FLETCHER, In Search of the Antidote [📷: Snapback Entertainment LLC / UMG Recordings, Inc.]“And it’s only half of a lie / When I say you’ll find someone better someday.” So, there is some truth there! “Ego Talking” is the third track on In Search of the Antidote, the 2024 studio LP by FLETCHER (Cari Fletcher). The LGBTQ pop musician penned “Ego Talking” alongside Julia Michaels, Madison Love, and producers Jennifer Decliveo and Pete Nappi. Matters of the heart are firmly in play. This post-breakup record thrives lyrically and thematically.

On one hand, FLETCHER encourages her ex to have happiness with someone else. “So, go, do it all, have the time of your life / And kiss every girl, let ‘em all stay the night.” It’s the right thing to do, right? Right. The gender of her ex isn’t specified. It doesn’t matter either, as this sentiment is relatable to anybody regardless of sexual orientation. More compelling is FLETCHER’s ego, which leads her to believe her ex will NEVER do better than she did with her.

“Oh-oh, you’ll never fuck somebody hotter, right?

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Hope my lips haunt you for life

Hearin’ my name twists the knife

Hopin’ you stay brokenhearted

But that’s just my ego talkin’.”

Oh, snap! FLETCHER brilliantly captures the complexity of breaking up on “Ego Talking”.  She sings authentically and expressively.

4. Jack Murnin, “Ego”

“Ego” // Jack Murnin // 2024

Jack Murnin, Ego [📷: Jack Murnin]“It don’t feel good / Knowing I’m so much better than your boyfriend,” Jack Murnin asserts in his 2024 R&B song, “Ego.” He adds, “Why you call me crazy / You tiptoe around our connection.” So, is the connection legit, or is Murnin’s ego inflated? That is the question.  Murnin sings expressively from the beginning. In the chorus, he impresses with his falsetto, singing, “If I could hold you close / I’d let my ego go / Falling into your love / Let the walls melt round us.” Word! Jack wrote and produced “Ego.” The instrumental is compelling, from the smooth electric piano to the picturesque synths.  The compound duple meter amplifies the drama driven by matters of the heart… and ego.  One of the best instrumental moments occurs between the choruses where the sounds are big and ear-catching. Jack Murnin has a big ego, and arguably, it’s hurt his relationship.  That said, he should believe in this sick song.

5. Lauren Daigle, “Ego”

Lauren Daigle // Centricity Music / Atlantic // 2023

Lauren Daigle, Lauren Daigle [📷: Centricity Music / Atlantic]“Stuck inside the game, all just tryna find a place / For the stories we share are picture-perfect in every frame.” Why does it have to be picture-perfect? Ask yourself that question. The pressure of perfection is enormous… ginormous! And that, friends, is a huge downside of social media, particularly the likes of Instagram. Grammy-winning Christian pop singer Lauren Daigle adds, “We all wanna be known, but we’re afraid to be fully seen.” True.  “Ego” is the 9th track from her self-titled, 2023 LP. Daigle composed “Ego” alongside Jason Ingram and renowned music producer, Mike Elizondo.

In this thought-provoking song, Daigle cries foul regarding the dangers of seeking attention and clout, validation from others, and E-G-O.  In the chorus, she proclaims, “I’m done wrestlin’ with my ego / Lord knows it all feels so hollow / If you wanna go high, then you gotta bow low / If you wanna go deep, gotta rise above the shallow.” Not only is Daigle a fantastic vocalist, but she’s also a prudent woman.  She makes her point loud and clear, over a groovy, colorful instrumental comprised of organ, strings, and horns.  “Can we change what we’ve become? / Can we save our society,” she asks on the bridge, continuing, “If there’s a way, if there’s a door / It’s humility.” Amen! “Ego” is a wise bop.

6. Ty Dolla $ign, “Ego Death” (Ft. Kanye West, FKA twigs & Skrillex)

Featuring Ty Dolla $ign // Atlantic // 2020

Ty Dolla $ign, Featuring Ty Dolla $ign [📷: Atlantic]According to Ty Dolla $ign, “Ego death is where you find happiness / That’s the ONLY place you find happiness.” Being egotistical can be a bad character trait, so losing one’s ego can be a learning, life-changing experience. “Murdered my ego when you walked away / It hurt my ego when you walked away,” Ty asserts in the chorus of “Ego Death,” the 25th track from his 2020 album, Featuring Ty Dolla $ign.  He adds, “Gave me your all, that wouldn’t make me stay / Murdered my ego when you walked away.” On “Ego Death,” Ty collaborated with Kanye West, FKA twigs, and Skrillex. Ty, Skrillex, and BoogzDaBeast produced, incorporating multiple samples including “Free” by Ultra Naté and a Kanye West IG rant. A vibe, “Ego Death” has an infectious, danceable beat, ear-catching synths, and other cool, colorful musical touches. Besides the sample from his IG rant, West performs the third verse, with no shortage of memorable lyrics like “Showin’ up to the Grammy’s mad / Tryna win some’ we already had,” and “All these admirations, likes, and false validations / Feeding to our ego, talk for somethin’, negro.” FKA twigs sings radiantly in the outro, “I let my ego down and then I rise back up / I let me ego down and then I’ll be stronger.” The big takeaway of “Ego Death” is… let that ego die! You’ll come out better!

7. Paige Fish, “Ego”

“Ego” // Harbour Artist & Music // 2024

Paige Fish, Ego [📷: Harbour Artist & Music]“No, I hope hearing this song really didn’t boost his ego.” Hopefully not, Paige Fish! If anyone should be egotistical, it should be Fish.  The 18-year-old singer/songwriter shines on the engaging, thoughtfully penned “Ego.” Early on, she paints a picture of a man whose ego is problematic: “Your good friends from high school / Told me you like your women a little silent.” It’s a classic case of a man who wants a submissive woman. Fish plays the game, temporarily, singing in the chorus, “And I’ll stay quiet / But only ‘til I overflow / Anything to boost your ego.” She won’t brag about herself in his presence, yet acknowledges her success and brilliantly states, “So you can go and text your other honey / Cause they probably listened to my band / Buy tickets to my shows / And make me money, money, money.” Ooh-wee! Oh, snap! Fish penned this superb song that she sings sublimely with her distinct, nuanced pipes. Carson Ripley produced it. “Ego” never sounded better in the hands of Paige Fish.

8. Saint Harison, “ego talkin’”

Lost a friend (EP) // Tell Your Friends // 2023

Saint Harison, Lost a Friend (EP) [📷: Tell Your Friends]“Admittance is the key to start the healin’ right,” Saint Harison sings in the first verse of “ego talkin’,” admitting, “But I didn’t wanna eat that humble pie.” Give him credit for being self-aware. Similarly, in the second verse, he blames her instead of himself, taking no ownership. In the pre-chorus, the drink is the culprit, and he sings, “I swear that I don’t care if you leave.” Hmm, sketchy! In reality, Saint Harison understands what he needs to do to improve, but he must stop his ego from talking! In the chorus, he asserts:

“That ain’t me though, that’s just my ego talkin’

Baby, don’t roll your eyes

I’m still me, don’t listen to my ego talkin’

My e-e-e-e-ego

Ownin’ it tonight

My e-e-e-e-ego.”

Saint Harison penned “ego talkin’” with Boy Matthews and producer, Deputy.  Without a doubt, this exquisitely sung, and sleekly produced R&B song is a highlight from his 2023 EP, lost a friend. Harison’s voice is simply beautiful.

9. Jensen McRae, “My Ego Dies at the End”

Are You Happy Now? // Human Re Sources // 2022

Jensen McRae, Are You Happy Now? [📷: Human Re Sources]“I think I lost something in the water,” singer/songwriter Jensen McRae asserts, adding in the first verse of “My Ego Dies at the End,” “drowned in a dream that should’ve made me stronger / I tried to swim through it / I could not swim through it.” Even more personally, in the second verse of the 2022 track from Are You Happy Now?, she sings, “I lost the girl I was over a winter.” So, what’s going on with McRae in this ballad? What is this change she’s experiencing? It’s ego death. She experiences “the dream again” and you know what happens? “My ego dies at the end, it’s ego death /… Who am I? I’ve lost the thread / My ego dies at the end.” In this alluring song, Jensen McRae delivers an honest vocal performance that’s nuanced and thoughtful.  There is no shortage of memorable lyrics, including my favorite, “Tried baptism but it felt like burning.” McRae composed “My Ego Dies at the End” with producer Rahki who constructs a marvelous, picturesque instrumental.

10. Lucky Daye, “Ego Trip (Intro)”

Table for Two // Keep Cool / RCA // 2021

Lucky Daye, Table for Two [📷: Keep Cool / RCA]Table for Two is a special project for R&B singer/songwriter Lucky Daye (David Brown). Why? It earned him his first Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album.  The Table for Two experience begins with an egotistical intro: “Ego Trip (Intro).” “Ego Trip,” which runs a mere half-minute in duration, sets the tone for the brief album: “Ah, right this way Your Litness / Please see our complementary ego check at the entrance / Your table will be moving in three, two, one.” “Ego Trip (Intro)” wouldn’t be the final time Daye sang a song about ego

CANDYDRIP // Keep Cool / RCA // 2022

Lucky Daye, Candydrip [📷: Keep Cool / RCA]“No one can save me / No one can change me / You’re my ego.” Interesting, Lucky Daye.  The Grammy winner has been ‘putting in work’ on his “Ego.” For example, he asserts, “I learned to love myself less.” Selflessness is awesome! “Ego” concludes his 2022 album, CANDYDRIP.  In no rush, running nearly six minutes, Daye expresses his commitment and love to her.  “You know I want you for mine / Lord knows I gotta fly / Where to draw the line? / I’m workin’ on my ego (ego, ego ego).” Ooh-wee! He doesn’t stop there in the chorus, adding, “Girl, I want you all the time / I been lovin’ on you blind / And that ain’t a free throw / Workin’ on my ego.”  The concept of the song is interesting because the ego is complicated. He tries to prove himself, yet, he seems confident she’ll be his. He wrote “Ego” alongside Mike Hunnid and producers Pierre-Luc Rioux, xSDTRK, and D’Mile, who constructed an awesome instrumental.

12. Logic, “Pardon My Ego”

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind // Def Jam // 2019

Logic, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind [📷: Def Jam]“Five hundred thousand for a one-off / Hit the stage, I rage, and then I run off (Uh) / It don’t matter where we at, it’s poppin’ like a gun off (Uh) / Bumping N.W.A. on the 101-uh (Uh).” WOO! HELL YEAH! Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was an average album by Grammy-nominated rapper, Logic. Before the 2019 album, he released better projects (Under Pressure). Since the 2019 album, he’s released better projects (No Pressure). On “Pardon My Ego,” he benefits from the strong production skills of 6ix and CuBeatz. As the title suggests, Logic captures his egotistical nature. “I can’t fuck a ho, I’d rather self-love instead,” he spits in the first verse, adding, “Can’t save a ho, no S on my chest, or gun to the head.” Logic also references other successful rappers like Kid Cudi (“A little crazy, but tell me, what genius ain’t a little nutty?”) and Kanye West (“I ain’t bipolar, Kanye make me wish I was / ‘Cause that level of genius the meanest / Nobody fuckin’ around with that flow / When I spit it, you know it’s the cleanest, uh”). His flow is ripe and while his rhymes are ‘empty’ to an extent, it perfectly fits the aesthetic and overall vibe.  Fitting the size of his ego is the size of his… (“All my haters can suck my penis”).

13. Beyoncé, “Ego”

I Am… Sasha Fierce // Sony Music Entertainment // 2008

Beyoncé, I Am...Sasha Fierce [📷: Sony]“Some women were made, but me, myself? / I like to think that I was created for a special purpose.” Word, Beyoncé.  The Grammy-winning superstar is confident in “Ego”, the 14th track from her 2008 double album, I Am… Sasha Fierce. “Ego” earned her another top-40 hit, peaking at no. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. Even with its modest performance, the highlight from the Sasha Fierce side of the LP was certified platinum.  Her ego is firmly intact 😉.

The concept of ego in Bey’s hands is fascinating.  In the first verse, she considers herself lucky because he’s “got the key to my heart.” Aww 🥰. However, she adds, “But you ain’t gonna need it, I’d rather you open up my body…” He’s the egotistical one, here, something that she expands on in the chorus:

“It’s too big (big), it’s too wide (wide)

It’s too strong (strong), it won’t fit

…He talk like this ‘cause he can back it up

He got a big ego

Such a big ego…”

Hmm, the ego doesn’t seem like the only thing big 😈.  The sexual innuendo is ripe.  In the second verse, it is Beyoncé with a big ego. Not only does she give him an ultimatum (“You can leave with me, or you could have the blues”), but she also touts her banging body and looks (“Damn, I know, I’m killing you with them legs / Better yet, them thighs, matter of fact, it’s my smile”).  Accordingly, in the second chorus, the pronouns shift to ‘I’ since she’s got a big ego now! Beyond the lyrics, as always, Beyoncé ‘slays’ in the vocal department.  Furthermore, the production (Bey, Blac Elvis, and Harold Lilly) is some of the finest on I Am… Sasha Fierce. “Ego” blends contemporary R&B with neo-soul, thanks to those exuberant horns, organ, and keys, The remixed version, featuring Kanye West, was nominated for the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards.  That same ceremony saw Bey win six Grammys, five tied to I Am… Sasha Fierce. “I got every reason to feel like I’m that bitch.” Truer words were never spoken, Beyoncé!
