1. BLACKPINK, โ€œBet You Wannaโ€

Ft. Cardi B

๐Ÿ’ฟ THE ALBUM โ€ข ๐Ÿท YG Entertainment / Interscope โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

BLACKPINK, The Album [๐Ÿ“ท : YG Entertainment / Interscope]๐ŸŽต โ€œBet You Wannaโ€ is arguably, is the song to beat on ๐Ÿ’ฟ THE ALBUM, the 2020 album by K-Pop girl group ๐ŸŽ™ BLACKPINK. โ€œBet You Wannaโ€ features a โ€˜cleanโ€™ rap verse by ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winner ๐ŸŽ™ Cardi B (yes, sheโ€™s tame, but admits it was hard).  Performed exclusively in English, โ€œBet You Wannaโ€ is a bop from the opening tip.

The production maintains the sleekness of The Album, anchored by beat that packs a mighty punch.  Furthermore, the songwriting is catchy โ€“ particularly the chorus below โ€“ while the vocals by BLACKPINK #winnning.  Listening to The Album the first time, I found myself wanting to keep โ€œBet You Wannaโ€ on repeat โ€“ it has surefire BOP written all over it.

โ€œSomething โ€˜bout meโ€™s taking you higher (Hey, hey)
And you ainโ€™t ever gonna come down (You ainโ€™t ever, you ainโ€™t ever)
Iโ€™m lighting your fire (Hey, hey)
And it ainโ€™t even gonna go out (It ainโ€™t ever, it ainโ€™t ever).โ€

2. Shelley FKA DRAM, โ€œBroccoliโ€

Ft. Lil Yachty

๐Ÿ’ฟ Big Baby DRAM โ€ข ๐Ÿท EMPIRE / Atlantic โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2016

DRAM, Big Baby Dram [๐Ÿ“ท: Atlantic]โ€œIn the middle of the party, bitch, get off me (god damn) / In the cut, Iโ€™m rollinโ€™ up my broccoli (god damn) โ€ฆโ€ Hold up โ€“ how do you โ€˜roll up broccoliโ€™ exactly, ๐ŸŽ™ Shelley FKA DRAM.  I mean, I can see removing the stalks of this absolutely delicious green vegetable, but I canโ€™t see you โ€œrollinโ€™ upโ€ no broccoli โ€“ what the hell man? Okay, okay, Iโ€™m kidding โ€“ DRAM is obviously talking about weed on his Grammy-nominated gem, ๐ŸŽต โ€œBroccoliโ€ ๐Ÿฅฆ (๐Ÿ’ฟ Big Baby DRAM).  Letting him finish his lyrics: โ€œโ€ฆYeah, I know your baby mama fond of me (god damn) / All she want to do is smoke that broccoli (god damn).โ€  And thereโ€™s the clarification that โ€˜broccoliโ€™ in this case is a wacky veggie to say the least!

https://media.giphy.com/media/dllaWjCf0MV0nSNf8y/giphy.gif

Nonetheless, veggies have NEVER sounded so appetizing until Shelley came along. โ€œBroccoliโ€ gave the Virginia rapper-singer a breakthrough hit in addition to his Grammy-nomination.  Aside from an assist by ๐ŸŽ™ Lil Yachty who drops an insensitive Columbine reference, โ€œBroccoliโ€ delivers quite the high: excellent production set in a major key and positive vibes where thereโ€™s totally no โ€œfuck-shit.โ€

โ€œAinโ€™t no tellinโ€™ what Iโ€™m finna be on
Iโ€™m beyond all that fuck shit...โ€

3. Billie Eilish, โ€œbad guyโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? โ€ข ๐Ÿท Darkroom / Interscope โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2019

Billie Eilish, When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? [๐Ÿ“ท: Darkroom / Interscope]โ€œSo, youโ€™re a tough guy / Like it really rough guy / Just canโ€™t get enough guy / Chest always so puffed guyโ€ฆโ€ The minimalist ๐ŸŽต โ€œBad Guyโ€ serves as the first full-length record on ๐Ÿ’ฟ When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, the compelling debut album by alternative pop artist, ๐ŸŽ™ Billie Eilish.  On the ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning โ€œBad Guyโ€ (Record of the Year and Song of the Year), Eilish sings in an undertone.  Sheโ€™s calm, cool, and collected, flaunting off her distinct approach and sound.

Adding to the intrigue of the listening experience are a unique palette of vocal effects, as well as an air of mysteriousness. โ€œBad Guyโ€ thrives because of its infectious groove, catchy chorus (partially excerpted above, and continued below), and a fun, if dark, playful style.  It easily nabbed the top spot on the ๐ŸŽง 51 Best Songs of 2019.

โ€œIโ€™m that bad type
Make your mama sad type
Make your girlfriend mad tight
Might seduce your dad type
Iโ€™m the bad guy...โ€

4. Omar Apollo, โ€œBi Frenโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Apolonio โ€ข ๐Ÿท Warner โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

Omar Apollo, Apolonio [๐Ÿ“ท: Warner]๐ŸŽต โ€œBi Frenโ€ marks one of the most captivating moments on ๐Ÿ’ฟ Apolonio, the 2020 mini album by the gifted and handsome Mexican American musician, ๐ŸŽ™ Omar Apollo. Apolloโ€™s style is quite eclectic (R&B, pop, rock, Latin), best characterized under the alternative umbrella. Like the song โ€œIโ€™m Amazingโ€ that commences Apolonio, โ€œBi Frenโ€ drips in swagger.  Also, obviously, it raises speculation regarding the musicianโ€™s sexuality, which he doesnโ€™t really address (nor does he have to). That said, thereโ€™s clearly some connection that Omar had with this guy, mumble approach to performing or not.

On the second verse, Omar asserts:

โ€œI still like him, I still like him
I used to drive around your block without no license
Separate you and your bitch, Iโ€™m not no hypen
I hate your bitch, so I dipped out and jumped the high fence
He talking โ€˜bout hi friend, Iโ€™m talkinโ€™ bout bi friend.โ€

Itโ€™s definitely intriguing โ€“ incredibly entertaining. That groove is ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

5. Fantasia, โ€œBad Girlโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Sketchbook โ€ข ๐Ÿท Rock Soul / BMG Rights Management โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2019

Fantasia, Sketchbook [๐Ÿ“ท: Rock Soul / BMG Rights Management]โ€œIโ€™m just a confident, independent, getting it, intelligent, woman / And if my confident, independence, go and get it, intelligence scares yaโ€ฆโ€ Ah, ๐ŸŽต โ€œBad Girlโ€ ranks among the โ€˜crown jewelsโ€™ of ๐Ÿ’ฟ Sketchbook, the sixth studio album by ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning R&B artist, ๐ŸŽ™ Fantasia. โ€œBad Girlโ€ features lush production work courtesy of ๐ŸŽ™ Carmael Frith, ๐ŸŽ™ Jevon Hill, ๐ŸŽ™ Stanley Green, and ๐ŸŽ™ Theodore Thomas.

โ€œBad Girlโ€ thrives off of high-flying, spirited lead vocals from Fantasia.  She also gets superb support by backing vocals that further amplify both her lead and cause.  This empowered anthemโ€™s best moment comes courtesy of the chorus:

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll be the bad girl
The one that you really want
The one that wonโ€™t settle for nothing
And make you show just what youโ€™re made of
Yeah, Iโ€™ll be the bad girl
The one that youโ€™re scared to love
Iโ€™ll make you face all your fears, then wipe all your tears
So, toughen up, and fall for the bad girl.โ€

6. Trey Songz, โ€œBack Homeโ€

Ft. Summer Walker

๐Ÿ’ฟ Back Home โ€ข ๐Ÿท Atlantic โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

Trey Songz, Back Home [๐Ÿ“ท : Atlantic]โ€œAyy, I could cuss you out, hit my side bitch / You think she flew out; I deny it.โ€  Must be love! ๐ŸŽต โ€œBack Homeโ€, the title track from ๐Ÿ’ฟ Back Home, the eighth studio album by ๐ŸŽ™ Trey Songz, depicts a love-hate relationship.  This contemporary R&B record features sleek urban production work by ๐ŸŽ™ Chrishan and ๐ŸŽ™ Hitmaka.  The backdrop consists of a robust bass line, keyboards, and more of a โ€˜throwbackโ€™ R&B beat. With the vibe established, Trey Songz does work vocally.  His tone is rich and sexy.  Worth noting, he seems to place more emphasis on love as opposed to sex compared to previous cuts (โ€œIf it isnโ€™t love, why I keep coming back / I keep coming back, back homeโ€).

๐ŸŽ™ Summer Walker excels on the second verse, providing a response to Treyโ€™s dedication, continuing to capture the love-hate dynamic perfectly:

โ€œYou get on my damn nerves
Then I say that Iโ€™m done
Then I miss you in the middle of the club.โ€

Trey responds with a final verse, confirming that despite their disagreements, โ€œItโ€™s never really overโ€ because, again, โ€œIf this isnโ€™t love, why do I keep coming back?โ€

7. BROCKHAMPTON, โ€œBoy Byeโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ GINGER โ€ข ๐Ÿท RCA โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2019

BROCKHAMPTON, GINGER [๐Ÿ“ท : RCA]๐ŸŽต โ€œBoy Byeโ€ ranks among the standouts from ๐Ÿ’ฟ GINGER, the fifth studio album by ๐ŸŽ™ BROCKHAMPTON. โ€œBoy Byeโ€ begins with production work that certainly doesnโ€™t exemplify hip-hop.  Regardless, following the brief ๐ŸŽ™ Merlyn Wood intro, the rest of BROCKHAMPTON get to work, spitting capably over the backdrop.  ๐ŸŽ™ Dom McLennon is the first to โ€˜shoot his shot,โ€™ referencing weed (โ€œBreaking up botanical to ease my stressingโ€), Johnnie Cochran (โ€œI go Johnnie Cochran when Iโ€™m raising my defensesโ€), and Michael Keaton via ๐ŸŽฅ Birdman (โ€œMan, I feel like Michael Keaton when a nigga start ascendingโ€).  ๐ŸŽ™ Matt Champion takes the reins on the second verse with his own share of colorful lines including โ€œMy shit bump like a belly when itโ€™s pregnant,โ€ as well as referencing Elmer Fudd and ๐ŸŽฅ Mean Girls.

https://media.giphy.com/media/pj3F6kEWAMuNG/giphy.gif

A third verse by ๐ŸŽ™ Kevin Abstract, arrives prior to the chorus.  He references trauma, ๐ŸŽฅ The Lion King, and sobriety.  The chorus that follows is random, but intriguing. ๐ŸŽ™ Bearface, like Abstract, references trauma on the fourth verse: โ€œTrauma the price of patience / Character shaped like an arc.โ€ The outro, courtesy of ๐ŸŽ™ Joba and Wood, includes the titular lyric, โ€œBoy, bye.โ€

8. Brandy, โ€œBorderlineโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ b7 โ€ข ๐Ÿท Brandy Nu, Inc. / Entertainment One U.S., LP โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

Brandy, b7 [๐Ÿ“ท : Entertainment One]There is some serious tension on ๐ŸŽต โ€œBorderline,โ€ among the top tier of ๐Ÿ’ฟ b7, the comeback album by Grammy-winning R&B singer, ๐ŸŽ™ Brandy. On the five-minute-plus โ€œBorderline,โ€ listeners are treated to gorgeous, lush, harmonized vocals.  Perhaps more notably, listeners easily perceive the love pain experienced by the singer.

โ€œHeart drops to the floor / โ€˜Cause thereโ€™s no you and I,โ€ she sings on the fourth verse, continuing, โ€œMaybe in another lifetime (Right place) / Caught me at the wrong time (Wrong time).โ€ If nothing else, one appreciates the consistent authenticity and personal nature of the lyricism throughout b7.

9. PARTYNEXTDOOR, โ€œBelieve Itโ€

Ft. Rihanna

๐Ÿ’ฟ PARTYMOBILE โ€ข ๐Ÿท OVO Sound / Warner โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

PARTYNEXTDOOR, Partymobile [๐Ÿ“ท : OVO Sound / Warner]โ€œHey / Best make me believe it / Best make me believe it / Believe you wonโ€™t deceive me.โ€ HEY! ๐ŸŽต โ€œBelieve Itโ€ appears as the 10th track on ๐Ÿ’ฟ PARTYMOBILE, the third studio album by Canadian R&B artist, ๐ŸŽ™ PARTYNEXTDOOR.  Among the highlights from PARTYMOBILE, PND secures a big-time assist from ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winner, ๐ŸŽ™ Rihanna, who sings the aforementioned, catchy chorus from the record.

Rihanna is a big reason for the success of โ€œBelieve Itโ€ but there are other things to believe in as well.  The production (๐ŸŽ™ Bizness Boi๐ŸŽ™ Cardiak, and ๐ŸŽ™ Ninetyfour) is pretty sweet.  Of course, PARTYNEXTDOOR deserves acknowledgement โ€“ heโ€™s the lead artist on the track after all!  Basically, he spends his verses trying to convince Rihanna to trust and believe him.  He definitely has a lot to prove.  Worth noting, at the end of the album, on my personal favorite song, โ€œSavage Anthemโ€, PND admits, โ€œIโ€™m not shit.โ€ Now that I do believe!

10. Sam Fender, โ€œThe Bordersโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Hypersonic Missiles โ€ข ๐Ÿท Polydor โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2019

Sam Fender, Hypersonic Missiles [๐Ÿ“ท: Polydor]โ€œWe were like brothers / Everybody said we looked the same / You were a little taller, and broader, and bolderโ€ฆโ€ Nice characterization to say the least! Letโ€™s add some context, shall we? ๐Ÿ’ฟ Hypersonic Missiles is an album that far too many people missed out on in 2019. ๐ŸŽ™ Sam Fender absolutely DID THAT โ€“ that superb, underrated album that is! The British singer/songwriter has a fantastic, powerful voice, and brings plenty of musical goodness to the table.  Part of the musical goodness comes by way of ๐ŸŽต โ€œThe Borders,โ€ the second song from his debut album.

โ€œThe Bordersโ€ runs five-and-a-half minutes in duration, earning the honors of the longest song on the album. It may be long, but the narrative is alluring, even without the aid of a chorus.  On this energetic, up-tempo record, where sound and performance are concerned, the Bruce Springsteen comparisons are quite pronounced.  The biggest difference? Fender has quite the inescapable British accent.  The songwriting = ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

โ€œHeard you glassed a boy back in the borders
Some naughty family boys are after you
You pinned me to the wall and said my mother
Stole your inheritance from you, oh yeah?โ€

11. Usher, โ€œBad Habitsโ€

๐ŸŽต โ€œBad Habitsโ€ โ€ข ๐Ÿท Brand Usher/RCA โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

Usher, "Bad Habits" [๐Ÿ“ท: Brand Usher / RCA]โ€œIโ€™m in love, Iโ€™m just bad it / I just canโ€™t escape all of these bad habits.โ€ Relatable โ€“ perfect fuel for a great R&B song, right? Right! Furthermore, those excerpted lyrics from the chorus of ๐ŸŽต โ€œBad Habitsโ€ suit ๐ŸŽ™ Usher to a T, ๐Ÿšซ๐ŸŽฉ! โ€œBad Habitsโ€ features lush production work by ๐ŸŽ™ Pierre Medor and ๐ŸŽ™ Lxrd Rossi. The sound hearkens back to the R&B of old (think 80s). Makes perfect sense, of course, given ๐ŸŽ™ Zapp is sampled (๐ŸŽต โ€œComputer Loveโ€).  While โ€œBad Habitsโ€ possesses classic R&B cues, it also sounds fresh enough to fly in 2020.  Itโ€™s a great balancing act. Following the introduction, the record is anchored by some hard drums, clearly idiomatic of modern times.

While the sound plays a big role in the success of โ€œBad Habits,โ€ nothing and nobody else plays a bigger role than Usher. First and foremost, we get high-flying, elite vocals from the Grammy winner, who sounds as strong as he did in his heyday. Of course, the other big piece of the puzzle for โ€œBad Habitsโ€ that makes it successful โ€“ LOVE.  Usher is at his best when matters of the heart are in plan. Here, heโ€™s bad at it, and thatโ€™s music to the listenerโ€™s ears.  Also, music to the listenerโ€™s ears? The catchy, memorable chorus excerpted at the top! Great vocals, relatable theme, and awesome production make โ€œBad Habitsโ€ a surefire winner.

12. Myylo, โ€œBored to Tearsโ€

๐ŸŽต โ€œBored to Tearsโ€ โ€ข ๐Ÿท Myylo โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

Myylo, "Bored to Tears" [๐Ÿ“ท : Myylo]โ€œAnd from the minute I hit it I felt we should be friends / I think I need something different and this isnโ€™t it / Donโ€™t feel the sparkies or fireworks when Iโ€™m kissing himโ€ฆโ€ Oh ๐ŸŽ™ Myylo, you can make even the most bored, mundane days โ€œshine bright like a diamond.โ€ Itโ€™s true, the Nashville-based pop musician seems to churn out those bops like theyโ€™re nothing.  Of course, what makes those bops especially potent is the subject matter: BOYS (Exhibit A โฌ†). โ€œBored to Tearsโ€ definitely doesnโ€™t leave you the least bit bored!

With Myylo, we know weโ€™re going to get boys โ€“ that box is always ticked off the checklist.  What we never know is what a new song will sound like.  Heโ€™s awesome at surprising us even if we can predict the subject matter.  On โ€œBored to Tears,โ€ we get a dash of urban-pop production.  The beat is definitely idiomatic of modern music times with its hip-hop/trap sensibilities. Has he ever gone this hard?  Even with those hip-hop cues and electronic synths, this is still very much a pop song. As always, Myylo doesnโ€™t underwhelm in the attitude department.  He gives us playful vocals and lyrics.  In this case โ€“ as you read in Exhibit A at the ๐Ÿ”, heโ€™s โ€œBored to tears /โ€ฆwith these boys round here.โ€ Amen โ€“ hallelujah! As always, we get even more fun, particularly the bad date with the โ€œHank in a tank with a nip slipโ€ from the gym.

13. Amy Winehouse, โ€œBack to Blackโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Back to Black โ€ข ๐Ÿท Universal Island โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2006

Amy Winehouse, Back to Black [๐Ÿ“ท : Universal]โ€œWeโ€™ve only said goodbye with words / I died a hundred times / You got back to her, and I go back to / I go back to black.โ€ In a showdown for the ages, ๐ŸŽ™ Amy Winehouse seemed a lock to win the highly coveted Album of the Year at the ๐Ÿ† 50th Annual Grammy Awards with the soulful masterwork๐Ÿ’ฟ Back in Black.  She was in what was perceived to be dead heat with Kanye West (๐Ÿ’ฟ Graduation), but after winning five awards that evening, it seemed like a done deal.  Of course, by now, everyone knows that arguably the biggest underdog ever, ๐Ÿ’ฟ River: The Joni Letters by veteran jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, shocked the world (and him too).  Regardless, Back in Black has easily cemented its place in musical history, with ๐ŸŽต โ€œBack in Blackโ€ leading the charge (behind โ€œRehabโ€ and perhaps โ€œYou Know Iโ€™m No Goodโ€ of course).

โ€œBack in Blackโ€ is a magnificent record, but incredibly dark.  Set in a minor key, the mood and the tone is clear from the jump.  โ€œHe left no time to regret / Kept his dick wet with his same old safe bet,โ€ she sings at the beginning of the first verse, continuing, โ€œMe and my head high / And my tears dry, get on without my guy.โ€ Her expressive, throaty vocals clearly indicate the pain sheโ€™s experiencing: a bad breakup and depression, heightened by the fact that her ex went back to his ex-girlfriend. The second verse features some my favorite lyrics from the entire song (besides the aforementioned chorus, of course):

โ€œI love you so much, itโ€™s not enough
You love blow and I love puff
And life is like a pipe
And Iโ€™m a tiny penny rollinโ€™ up the walls inside.โ€
