โ€œThe wind and the rain shall obey thy will / Peace be still, peace be still!โ€ Those are powerful lyrics from one of the most powerful hymns in the game โ€“ I mean the church.  That said, ๐ŸŽต โ€œPeace Be Stillโ€ has little to do with this 34th compendium published in the year of our Lord, 2022, save for referencing the keyword, WIND ๐Ÿ’จ. Thatโ€™s right! This list is all about wind, defined by Merriam-Webster as โ€œa natural movement of air of any velocity.โ€ Say that Merriam!

๐ŸŽง 12 Powerful Songs About the Wind ๐Ÿ’จ features an eclectic crop of musicians โ€“ you know how we do at The Musical Hype! The artists with those powerful songs featuring WIND ๐Ÿ’จ in their title include ๐ŸŽ™ Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, ๐ŸŽ™ Kansas, ๐ŸŽ™ Ludovico Einaudi, ๐ŸŽ™ SZA, and ๐ŸŽ™ Tyler, The Creator among others. So, letโ€™s see, thereโ€™s some Midwest rap, rock, classical, R&B, and alternative rap. Compelling! So, without further do, letโ€™s get this WIND on these ๐ŸŽง 12 Powerful Songs About the Wind ๐Ÿ’จ!!!

1. Ludovico Einaudi, โ€œWind Songโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Underwater โ€ข ๐Ÿท Ludovico Einaudi / Decca โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2022

Ludovico Einaudi, Underwater [๐Ÿ“ท: Ludovico Einaudi / Decca]Often, Iโ€™ll commence a compendium with a surefire bang.  Instead, how about an unexpected vibe? Sometimes, a โ€˜vibeโ€™ can be instrumental.  Italian pianist ๐ŸŽ™ Ludovico Einaudi certainly serves up an instrumental vibe on ๐ŸŽต โ€œWind Song.โ€ โ€œWind Songโ€ arrives as the eighth track on Einaudiโ€™s 2022 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Underwater.

There may be no words to direct the narrative of โ€œWind Song,โ€ but the moody, minor key and gorgeous piano lines sufficiently do the job.  Einaudi never overplays, providing a simple, tuneful melody and ample repetition.  Even though itโ€™s set in a dark, minor key (B minor precisely), โ€œWind Songโ€ is incredibly tranquil, perfect background music for any occasion.

2. Tyler, The Creator, โ€œHot Wind Blowsโ€ (Ft. Lil Wayne)

๐Ÿ’ฟ CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST โ€ข ๐Ÿท Columbia โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2021

Tyler, The Creator, CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST [๐Ÿ“ท: Columbia]โ€œWe just landed in Geneva / Yeah, thatโ€™s in Switzerland.โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ DJ Drama announces those lines on ๐ŸŽต โ€œHot Wind Blows,โ€ another elite number from ๐Ÿ’ฟ CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST. For those keeping score, CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST marks the third straight masterpiece by ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning rapper, ๐ŸŽ™ Tyler, The Creator.  Keeping the album star-studded, Tyler enlists  โ€œWeezy the GOAT,โ€ aka fellow ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning rapper ๐ŸŽ™ Lil Wayne for the assist.

Lil Wayne drops bars, following the first verse by Tyler.  For good measure, Tyler remains in character within the context of CMIFYGL (Tyler Baudelaire), asserting, โ€œWe boated here, itโ€™s Tunechi and Tyler but call me Baudelaire, yeah.โ€  Also, he keeps the production on-point, no cap, sampling ๐ŸŽต โ€œSlow Hot Windโ€ by ๐ŸŽ™ Penny Goodwin and ๐ŸŽต โ€œSenileโ€ by ๐ŸŽ™ Young Money. As for Weezy, heโ€™s true to self, whether itโ€™s mentioning lean, exuding ample confidence, or flexing.

3. SZA, โ€œDoves in the Windโ€ (Ft. Kendrick Lamar)

๐Ÿ’ฟ Ctrl โ€ข ๐Ÿท Top Dawg Entertainment / RCAโ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2017

SZA, Ctrl [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]๐ŸŽต โ€œDoves in the Windโ€ packs the biggest punch of ๐Ÿ’ฟ Ctrl.  For some context, Ctrl is the 2017 debut album by ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated R&B artist, ๐ŸŽ™ SZA.  Notably, the song at hand, which enlists ๐Ÿ† Grammy winner ๐ŸŽ™ Kendrick Lamar for the assist, focuses on โ€“ wait for it โ€“ pussy.  According to SZA, โ€œReal niggas do not deserve pussy.โ€ Woo! Also, cleverly, she references K-Dotโ€™s ๐ŸŽต โ€œThese Wallsโ€ (โ€œMeaning itโ€™s more, you see right through wallsโ€) and ๐ŸŽฆ Forrest Gump (โ€œCome with me, Forrest Gump had a lot goinโ€™ for him / Never without pussy, yโ€™know, Jenny almost gave it all up for himโ€).

It doesnโ€™t end there for SZA, who later asserts โ€œYour [beep] is weak buddy / Itโ€™s only replaced by a rubber substitute.โ€ Yikes โ€“ analyze that one for yourself.  The big takeaway is sheโ€™s disgusted by the shallowness of men.  Women, specifically their private parts, should be respected, not merely objectified or avenues of pleasure for men whenever they desire. Kendrick Lamar expounds on p-power on the second verse, uttering the word at least 17 times.

โ€œYou overcompensate too much for the pussy

You like to throw all kinda shade for the pussy

See, thatโ€™s what pussy niggas do.โ€

Kendrick makes a valid point there.

4. Kansas, โ€œDust in the Windโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Point of Know Return โ€ข ๐Ÿท Sony โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 1977

Kansas, Point of Know Return [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony]โ€œI close my eyes / Only for a moment and the momentโ€™s gone / All my dreams / Pass before my eyes, a curiosity.โ€ When you think of ๐ŸŽ™ Kansas (the band), whatโ€™s the first song that comes to mind? Likely, itโ€™s ๐ŸŽต โ€œDust in the Windโ€, the bandโ€™s biggest hit.  โ€œDust in the Windโ€ marked the bandโ€™s sole top-10 hit, peaking at no. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Worth noting, the ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated band did not receive their sole nomination for โ€œDust in the Wind,โ€ their ace-in-the-hole.  No, they received a Grammy nom for ๐ŸŽต โ€œCrossfireโ€ โ€ฆ Iโ€™ll leave it at that.

โ€œNow, donโ€™t hang on

Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky

It slips away

And all your money wonโ€™t another minute buy.โ€

โ€œDust in the Windโ€ arrives on the bandโ€™s 1977 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Point of Know Return.  Acoustic driven, notably, the sound of the record is quite different than the rest of the catalog.  Compare it to their other popular songs, as well as โ€œCrossfireโ€ and itโ€™s clearly โ€˜a change of pace.โ€™ Way to go out of character, Kansas!  One of the biggest things that stands out about โ€œDust in the Windโ€ is that signature, picked acoustic guitar line.  Also selling points: warm lead vocals, vocal harmonies, the strings, and of course, the lyrics.  This reflective record packs a mean punch considering how gentle it is.

5. Pharrell Williams, โ€œGust of Windโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ G I R L โ€ข ๐Ÿท Columbia โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2014

Pharrell Williams, G I R L [๐Ÿ“ท: Columbia]โ€œWhen I first saw you, I got excited / Tried to keep my composure, tryna hide it / But I didnโ€™t know / I didnโ€™t let go.โ€ Ooh wee! ๐ŸŽ™ Pharrell Williams easily made one of the best R&B albums of 2014 with ๐Ÿ’ฟ G I R L.  The 13x ๐Ÿ† Grammy winner even managed to beat ๐ŸŽ™ Beyoncรฉโ€™s self-titled visual album for the ๐Ÿ† Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album.  That category has since been renamed to Progressive R&B album, but the point is, it was a bright spot in 2014 for an often-struggling genre.  One of the best songs from G I R L not named ๐ŸŽต โ€œHappyโ€ is the windy ๐ŸŽต โ€œGust of Wind.โ€ Heโ€™s assisted by ๐ŸŽ™ Daft Punk who co-wrote the record.

โ€œWhen I open the window / I wanna hug you / Cause you remind me of the air / I said yeah.โ€ Woo!  โ€œGust of Windโ€ features exceptional production work (by Williams, of course), driven by its groove. Pharrellโ€™s vocals are clear, soulful, and nuanced.  Williams is chivalrous here, dedicated to the one he loves.  Heโ€™s clearly infatuated, evidenced by pre- and post-choruses, and most of all, the head honcho, the chorus!

โ€œLike a gust of wind

You head me off sometimes

Like a gust of wind

You push me back every once in a while

Like a gust of wind

You remind me thereโ€™s someone up there

Who ushers in

The air I need to power my sail.โ€

6. Tori Kelly, โ€œColors of the Wind โ€“ from Pocahantasโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ We Love Disney โ€ข ๐Ÿท Disney โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2015

We Love Disney [๐Ÿ“ท: Disney]Thereโ€™s no way around it. ๐ŸŽฆ Pocahontas is one of Disneyโ€™s most controversial animated films.  The main reason is the historical liberties taken, of course. If the film werenโ€™t based on history, well, thereโ€™d be far few problems.  Even though Pocahontas, an important part of the Disney Renaissance has its issues, those issue donโ€™t include the animation, voice acting, or the soundtrack. The soundtrack, composed by ๐ŸŽผโœ Alan Menken and ๐ŸŽผโœ Stephen Schwartz, is exceptional, particularly the crowning achievement, ๐ŸŽต โ€œColors of the Wind.โ€

On the ๐Ÿ’ฟ We Love Disney compilation, ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning pop/Christian singer ๐ŸŽ™ Tori Kelly is tasked with covering the 1995 classic sung by both ๐ŸŽ™ Judy Kuhn and ๐ŸŽ™ Vanessa Williams for the film.  As expected, Kelly kills it โ€“ in the most positive way possible!  She showcases poise in the verses, showing off the sheer beauty of her voice and the melody of this iconic Disney record.  Even in the first chorus, Kelly never forces things, accompanied by guitar and lush strings.  Notably, in the second verse, we get more instrumentation and tastefully harmonized vocals.  Waiting for Kelly to let loose? No worries, the big moment happens after the bridge.  She doesnโ€™t stay there, but she shows just how gifted and soulful she is vocally.  Bravo!

7. Alec Benjamin, โ€œMust Have Been the Windโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ These Two Windows โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Alec Benjamin, These Two Windows [๐Ÿ“ท: Alec Benjamin]๐ŸŽต โ€œMust Have Been the Windโ€ arrived early during the ๐Ÿ’ฟ These Two Windows release cycle. Backtracking a bit, These Two Windows marked the official debut album of sweet-voiced pop singer/songwriter, ๐ŸŽ™ Alec Benjamin.  With a compendium in need of windy songs, there was no way that โ€œMust Have Been the Windโ€ could be left out of the fold!

The penultimate track from These Two Windows finds Benjamin imparting a story. A heavy record, โ€œMust Have Been the Windโ€ is about domestic abuse and about the role that a friend of someone who has suffered such abuse has.  โ€œI knew somebody who was in a situation like that, and I wanted to help them out,โ€ he tells Apple Music, โ€œBut they werenโ€™t ready to talk about it.  Thatโ€™s a tough situation to be in as a friendโ€ฆโ€  While โ€œMust Have Been the Windโ€ covers a tough subject, itโ€™s a brilliant heart-on-the-sleeves, thoughtful record tailor-made for Alec.

8. Elton John, โ€œCandle in the Wind โ€“ 1997โ€

๐ŸŽต โ€œCandle in the Wind โ€“ 1997โ€ โ€ข ๐Ÿท Mercury โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 1997

Elton John, "Candle In The Wind - 1977" [๐Ÿ“ท: Mercury]Tragedy affects and changes everything.  The world was shocked and saddened in August 1997 when Diana, Princess of Wales died following a car accident at the age of 36.  I can remember being 11 years old, waking up to the news that she hadnโ€™t survived the accident. Even being from the United States and not England, the impact of the loss of Diana was heavy.  ๐ŸŽต โ€œCandle in the Wind โ€“ 1997โ€ was released in her memory by Elton John, who performed the song at her memorial service. Of course, longtime lyricist, ๐ŸŽผโœ Bernie Taupin, rewrote the lyrics for the incredibly sad occasion.

โ€œGoodbye Englandโ€™s rose

May you ever grow in our hearts

You were the grace that placed itself

Where lives were torn apart.โ€

Ah, such moving, memorable lyrics Bernie! Of course, John sang it marvelously. Unsurprisingly, when released as a single alongside another Elton favorite, ๐ŸŽต โ€œSomething About The Way You Look Tonightโ€, the song topped the Billboard Hot 100โ€ฆ for 14 weeks!  I can remember being excited as an 11-year-old to purchase it (this was before iTunes, streaming, etc.). Apparently, the perception of this single is more polarizing for someโ€ฆ

9. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, โ€œWind Blowโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Strength & Loyalty โ€ข ๐Ÿท Interscope โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2007

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Strength & Loyalty [๐Ÿ“ท: Interscope]Sampling is an amazing thing.  Sure, some folks have their criticisms but personally, I think it offers ample possibilities and reintroduces classics to a new generation.  On ๐ŸŽต โ€œWind Blow,โ€ ๐ŸŽ› Bradd Young and ๐ŸŽ› Pretty Boy marvelously repurpose a ๐ŸŽ™ Fleetwood Mac classic, ๐ŸŽต โ€œThe Chainโ€. ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning Midwest darlings ๐ŸŽ™ Bone Thugs-N-Harmony totally eat that shit up (โ€œAyo, we ainโ€™t always been accepted like this / Till a nigga got that Grammyโ€)!

In the first verse, we get straight heat from ๐ŸŽ™ Layzie Bone, with contributions from ๐ŸŽ™ Krayzie Bone and ๐ŸŽ™ Wish Bone.  The Fleetwood Mac sample also plays a crucial role, emphasizing the lyric, โ€œListen to the wind blow.โ€ The chorus is a treat, featuring only the sample, performing the beloved refrain from โ€œThe Chain.โ€  The rest of โ€œWind Blowโ€ is patterned similarly, with more agile flows from Layzie, Krayzie, and Wish Bone and of course, that classic rock being repurposed masterfully on this under-appreciated 2007 rap banger from ๐Ÿ’ฟ Strength & Loyalty.

10. Orville Peck, โ€œWinds Changeโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Pony โ€ข ๐Ÿท Sub Pop โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2019

Orville Peck, Pony [๐Ÿ“ท: Sub Pop]โ€œRide, ride the wind.โ€ Indeed, ๐ŸŽ™ Orville Peck! The gay South African country artist based in Canada is truly fascinating โ€“ an UNDERSTATEMENT.  He first impressed the world on his 2019 debut album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Pony.  There, he unveiled the windy record, ๐ŸŽต โ€œWinds Change.โ€

Peck pens โ€œWinds Changeโ€ alongside ๐ŸŽผโœ Duncan Hay Jennings.  As always, he blesses the listener with his rich, masculine vocals.  The man sings with such expression โ€“ I could listen to him sing all day ๐Ÿ˜. Iโ€™m in love, Iโ€™ll admit it! Anyways, speaking of my love for Peck, โ€œWinds Changeโ€ explores the topic. Right off the bat, Peck sings in the first verse, โ€œHad a lover but I lost my patience / gonna get a song on a radio station.โ€ Hmm, I guess his focus shifted โ€“ go get that money Orville.  He references โ€˜loveโ€™ again in the second verse, though merely briefly: โ€œMet a lot of men who would call me pretty.โ€ Regardless of the ultimate importance of the line to the song, it finds him flexing his muscles bringing a colorful, queer element that Iโ€™m (and plenty others) are totally here for in his music.  The winds may change Orville but please, donโ€™t you ever change โ€“ I beg you, you gifted fringe-masked South African Canadian talent, you!

11. Marvin Sapp, โ€œFresh Windโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Here I Am โ€ข ๐Ÿท Verity โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2010

Marvin Sapp, Here I Am [๐Ÿ“ท: Verity]โ€œI feel the presence of the Lord moving in the atmosphere,โ€ ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated gospel singer, ๐ŸŽ™ Marvin Sapp asserts at the beginning of ๐ŸŽต โ€œFresh Windโ€.  He continues singing, โ€œLike on the day of Pentecost, they were all with one accord / And a sound came from heaven like a rushing mighty force.โ€ A rushing might force, huh? Of course, that force is The Holy Spirit, which, if you believe in Trinity, it all comes down to The Most High, GOD.

โ€œFresh Wind / Fill the house / Fill the house with Your presence.โ€ The Your is key โ€“ merciful, all-powerful, and omniscient.  On this highlight from his 2010 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Here I Am, the premise is simple yet requires faith. Sapp speaks about the greatness of God โ€“ his abilities to perform miracles. He constantly references The Day of Pentecost, hence why he cites โ€œThe Bible as a witnessโ€ to โ€œFeel Him in the air.โ€ Sapp did not write this inspiring song โ€“ that was ๐ŸŽผ โœ Jonathan Dunn โ€“ but him, assisted by choir, do a marvelous job of performing  and highlighting the importance of the text and message.  Long-time Sapp collaborator ๐ŸŽ› Aaron Lindsey produces this spiritual affair which sounds just a fresh as it did upon its arrival in 2010.  Donโ€™t we all need a fresh wind? Yes, yes, YES, we do!

12. Bette Midler, โ€œWind Beneath My Wingsโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Beaches โ€ข ๐Ÿท Atlantic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 1988

Bette Midler, Beaches [๐Ÿ“ท: Rhino / Atlantic]Question: โ€œDid you ever know that youโ€™re my hero / And everything I would like to be?โ€ Just hearing those famous lyrics give me chills! ๐ŸŽ™ Bette Midler is undoubtedly an icon.  Her career as an award-winning actress and singer is truly amazing and โ€˜once in a lifetime.โ€™  Among her most iconic moments was her recording of the oft-covered, much beloved song, ๐ŸŽต โ€œWind Beneath My Wings.โ€  No, Midler was not the first to record this ๐ŸŽผโœ Jeff Silbar and  Larry Henley penned hit. Doesnโ€™t matter because her version, which appeared on the soundtrack for the film ๐ŸŽฆ Beaches, has become the definitive, most decorated version of the song.

Few would deny that โ€œWind Beneath My Wingsโ€ is the perfect song.  The music and lyrics โ€“ incredibly thoughtful and poetically penned โ€“ are awesome. โ€œIt mustโ€™ve been cold there in my shadow,โ€ the first verse commences, continuing, โ€œTo never have sunlight on your face.โ€ So, so, gorgeous! Add those expressive vocals by Midler, along with a heaping dose of authenticity, and this record is nothing short of a juggernaut.  The chorus, excerpted at the top (the centerpiece of this masterpiece), continues as follows:

โ€œI can fly higher than an eagle

For you are the wind beneath my wings.โ€
