1. DaBaby, “CHAMPION”

💿 BLAME IT ON BABY • 🏷 Interscope • 🗓 2020

DaBaby, Blame it On Baby (Deluxe) [📷: Interscope]🎙 DaBaby is definitely a confident guy to say the least – understatement! The rapper takes a victory lap on 🎵 “Champion,” which appears no his 2020 studio album, 💿 BLAME IT ON BABY.  The ‘winning’ number is anchored by massive drums courtesy of 🎙 DJ Kid and 🎙 Tom French.

All of the production is quite lovely on “Champion” – definitely championship caliber. Furthermore, DaBaby totally feels himself, metaphorically speaking.  He asserts at one point, “I provide with the mic off dancin’ (Like Mike) / I’m a star and I’m moonwalkin’.” Give him some credit for the “R.I.P. Kobe” 🏀 line, if nothing else. Black Mamba was definitely a C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N.

2. Carrie Underwood, “The Champion”

Ft. Ludacris

💿 Cry Pretty • 🏷 Capitol Nashville • 🗓 2018

Carrie Underwood, Cry Pretty [📷: Capitol Nashville]“I am invincible, unbreakable / Unstoppable, unshakeable / They knock me down, I get up again / I am the champion, you’re gon’ know my name.” Grammy-winning country artist 🎙 Carrie Underwood returned “invincible, unbreakable, unstoppable, unshakable” on the energetic, uplifting pop record, 🎵 “The Champion” (💿 Cry Pretty).  She doesn’t do it all by herself – she’s assisted by Grammy-winning rapper, 🎙 Ludacris.

The first thing that listeners will notice is the attitude and grit exhibited vocally. Underwood exhibits utmost feistiness and intensity.  Rather than being smooth, she’s resolute, proven on the epic chorus (excerpted above). 🎙 Jim Jonsin does an awesome job with the urban-infused-pop production. Ludacris adds some southern rap on the third verse, keeping things clean, positive, and tasteful.  Perhaps the record is a bit sappy, but the good vibes and uplifting, winning message is undeniable.

3. Fall Out Boy, “Champion”

💿 MANIA • 🏷 Island • 🗓 2018

Fall Out Boy, M A N I A [📷: Island]“Champion, champion / And I can do anything!” That’s that winning spirit 🎙 Fall Out Boy! 🎵 “Champion”, the second advance single from 💿 MANIA, wasn’t quite a God-save for Fall Out Boy following the odd and sketchy 🎵 “Young and Menace”.  That said, the record is better-rounded and more enjoyable.

🎙 Patrick Stump delivers a more understated, thoughtful approach to the vocals on the verse. Naturally, he powers through on the chorus, which is catchy, despite a lack of deep or flashy lyrics: “If I can live through this / I can do anything!” The production is strong, focused on guitars as opposed to synths – a plus for the band.

4. The Rance Allen Group, “Champion”

💿 Celebrate • 🏷 Tyscot Music & Entertainment • 🗓 2014

The Rance Allen Group, Celebrate [📷: Tyscot]“If God is for you then you are the winner / Champion, champion, champion!” That is definitely an inspiring line from the late, great 🎙 Bishop Rance Allen and 🎙 The Rance Allen Group.  The gospel icon sadly passed away on October 31, 2020.  He is best known for his anointed vocals on the Kirk Franklin hit, “Something About the Name Jesus”, where he nails a high Ab with incredible ease.

On 🎵 “Champion” from the group’s 2014 album, 💿 Celebrate, Allen emphasizes how powerful God is and if he is on your side, there is no way that you don’t come out as a champion.  “If God is with you, then who can stand against you?”  As always, Allen delivers awesome, gritty vocals, chocked full of soul and spirit over a dynamic, contemporary gospel backdrop.

5. Bishop Briggs, “CHAMPION”

💿 CHAMPION • 🏷 Island • 🗓 2019

Bishop Briggs, Champion [📷: Island]“Cursing myself, I burned the furniture a million times in my head / I’m feeling low, got nowhere to go, but back up again.” Damn! At least, to 🎙 Bishop Briggs’ credit, she acknowledges that even though she’s so low on 🎵 “CHAMPION,” the title track from her 2019 album, she can go “back up again” – rise up.

Briggs sings with poise on the two verses, never over singing, even as she’s on the struggle bus so to speak. Even so, Bishop brings the heat. She steps up her game on the pre-chorus, where her ascent begins:

“You gotta get bruised before you get mad
You gotta fall down before you fight back
Was feeling so weak but baby I’m strong
Little did I know I’m a champion.”

The true punch comes on the chorus.  Here, she owns her ‘champion’ status – no more downtrodden, negativity.  She particular shows she’s the winner of the championship within the final minute of the song, showcasing incredible vocal versatility.  For any of the restraint shown early on, she totally lets it rip by the end.

6. Tank, “Champion”

💿 ELEVATION • 🏷 R&B Money / Atlantic • 🗓 2019

Tank, Elevation [📷: Atlantic / R&B Money]“You make me feel like Tyson, Jordan / (Rock me, baby).” 🎙 Tank and sex seem to be synonymous.  I mean, this is the same guy who came up with one of the best, if dirtiest lines ever (“When we…fuck”). Anyways, on 🎵 “Champion,” the fourth track from his 2019 album, 💿 ELEVATION, the type of ballin’ Tank is doing doesn’t involve any sort of sport but rather, S-E-X.

As to be expected, backed by a lush backdrop courtesy of 🎙 Doh Boy, Tank serves up a number of risqué, sensual lyrics.  On the first and second verses, he asserts, “I’ma make it pour tonight (Woo) / Drip so crazy, you know I’m an animal.” It certainly doesn’t take too much imagination to know WHAT exactly he plans to make 💧.  On the pre-chorus, he gets even freakier (tub sex), before we finally reach the main ‘champion’ portion on the chorus.  Per the chiseled singer:

“You make me feel like a champion
If I was still fuckin’ with her, I would’ve never won
Now, I’m doin’ the kinda ballin’ that I’ve never done
‘Cause you put me on a level like a champion...”

7. Meek Mill, “Championships”

💿 Championships • 🏷 Atlantic • 🗓 2018

Meek Mill, Championships [📷: Atlantic]“All the young’uns in my hood popping percs now / Getting’ high to get by, it’s gettin’ worse now / You gotta tell ‘em put them guns and them percs down / Them new jails got ten yards in ‘em and that’s your first down, uh…” On an album, more often than not, one expects the title track to be a standout – a total bop! That’s certainly the case on 💿 Championships, the 🏆 Grammy-nominated album by 🎙 Meek Mill. 🎵 “Championships” proves to be an utterly thrilling, ‘real talk’ track.

“Championships” benefits from a gorgeous, thrilling sample, Toney Fountaine’s “I Found the Girl”,  sped-up and pitched-up. This shapes “Championships” into an incredibly soulful joint, characteristic of Philadelphia.  This, in itself is part of the allure of this title track.  Of course, beyond the sound, Meek Mill is at his best.  In all honesty, he raps his ass off on this hook-less juggernaut – 🚫🎩, 🎤💧!

“Go to court with a court-appointed and he won’t say he object
Now it’s you against the state and you ain’t got no cake
Jail overpopulated they ain’t got no space.”

8. Coldplay, “Champion of the World”

💿 Everyday Life • 🏷 Parlophone • 🗓 2019

Coldplay, Everyday Life [📷: Warner]🎵 “Champion of the World” serves as the spirited, penultimate cut from 💿 Everyday Life, the eighth studio album by Grammy-winning alternative band, 🎙 Coldplay. Worth noting, Everyday Life ended up being a commercial flop for the band. Even so, the LP had its fair share of worthwhile moments, with “Champion of the World” included.

“Champion of the World” commences with Nigerian lyrics, contextually continuing 🎙 Chris Martin and company’s embrace of everybody. Martin has failed at numerous things (“I tried my best at taking flight / But my rocket ship reversed”), but vows, “But I’ll stand before conquistadors / Till I’m champion of the world.” It’s definitely a stellar message; one fit for a champion.

9. James Blunt, “Champions”

💿 Once Upon a Mind • 🏷 Atlantic • 🗓 2019

James Blunt, ONCE UPON A MIND [📷: Atlantic]“Everything I ever want is standing right in front of me / But I think that I’m runnin’ from the only one I really need,” James Blunt asserts at the end of the first verse on 🎵 “Champions.” Clearly, matters of the heart are in play for the Grammy-nominated British singer/songwriter/ “Champions” appears as the third song on Blunt’s 2019 album, 💿 Once Upon a Mind. Worth noting, it precedes that ‘kind of a big deal,’ totally moving record, 🎵 “Monsters”.

On the pre-chorus of “Champions,” Blunt continues with the notion that she’s the one, and he asks, “So tell me, baby, what’s it gonna take?” Take for what, you might ask? Well, obviously, for them to be together and be – wait for it – CHAMPIONS!

“We can be champions, we can own the night
Yeah, it might destroy us, but we gotta try
Can’t keep lookin’ backwards, runnin’ from the light
‘Cause this could be the greatest moment of our lives.”

Naturally, the second verse plays more to the union that James wants so badly.  Later, on the bridge, he continues to tout the power of the championships that can be won by them.  Quite effective and definitely enjoyable.

10. Kanye West, “Champion”

💿 Graduation • 🏷 Roc-A-Fella • 🗓 2007

Kanye West, Graduation [📷: Roc-A-Fella]Question: “Did you realize / That you were a champion in their eyes?” Well, did you? 🎵 “Champion” arrives as the second song from 💿 Graduation, the third studio album by 🎙 Kanye West. Worth noting, Graduation marked West’s third straight album nominated for the highly coveted Grammy for Album of Year.  Him (and 🎙 Amy Winehouse) would shockingly lose to 🎙 Herbie Hancock (💿 River: The Joni Letters).

The opening ‘question’ isn’t performed by Kanye West, but rather, comes courtesy of the 🎙 Steely Dan song, 🎵 “Kid Charlemagne”, which “Champion” samples.  No worries though! The always confident (and sometimes cocky) West responds, asserting, “Yes, I did / So I packed it up and brought it back to the crib / Just a little something, show you how we live.”  Okay! Throughout much of the song, he brags, but he does divert from that script some, particularly in the second verse:

“Lauryn Hill said her heart was in Zion
I wish her heart still was in rhymin’
‘Casue who the kids gon’ listen to, huh?
I guess me if it isn’t you.”

Well, he’s still ‘confident’ you might say, as he goes on to say, “They got the 💿 Dropout keepin’ kids in the school.” It’s one of many brilliant lines from this surefire champion song.

11. Queen, “We Are the Champions”

💿 News of the World • 🏷 Hollywood • 🗓 1977

Queen, News of the World [📷: Hollywood]“We are the champions, my friends / And we’ll keep on fighting, ‘til the end / We are the champions, we are the champions!” Indeed, 🎙 Queen, indeed! The championship aspirations are legit on 🎵 “We Are the Champions,” among the all-time great songs by the iconic rock band.  Furthermore, “We Are the Champions” ranks among the greatest songs of all time, regardless of band or genre.  Truly, there is “No time for losers,” because EVERYBODY embraces that championship-winning spirit listening to 🎙 Freddie Mercury’s epic vocals on this certified masterpiece.
